Exactly. The fact she is so good despite not having all these notions of "professional" strategies and tournaments... playing under the same conditions as the OG, basically... Will be thrilling to see how it goes!!
She's easily as good as Harry Hong circa 2010-2011 which means she's easily capable of a 1.2 if playing right well and practicing amongst real competition like CTM
They literally sound like Disney characters, I love it. It was really wild to hear them talk about tetris because it was like they came out of a time machine.
Yeah, it brings back so many memories, when my brother, my father and I were each trying to beat the the B mode 9-5 on GameBoy Tetris and we had a small competition to see who would get there first. IIRC my brother got there first, then me, and then our dad. The first time seeing that space shuttle sure was a nice experience.
I was half expecting him to just tear off his whole getup and start flexing in front of the camera saying "You thought I was old but it was I, a young handsome buff dude"

My mom has hit 560k, she’s late 50s, been playing PAL a long time. When we found out about the CTWC we both started NTSC on emu. She outright refused to enter this year though cause she was ‘too old’ - seeing this video I know there are probably many other older Tetris players lurking
Hi Rocco - The 560k is actually her NTSC score but she has probably played less than 100 games. Her PAL is not far behind anyway at 545-547k, but she has been playing since the 1980’s! I think she could max NTSC if she put the effort in. Our skill levels were similar in 2018 when we gave NTSC a go and I finally managed a max in late 2019 so I’m sure she could have too. It would be awesome to get her to CTEC or CTWC next year and I’ll certainly keep dropping the hint to her!
It's not everyday that a relative nobody shows up on their esports debut with such a surprisingly strong skill level. The biggest obstacle she probably faces at the moment in terms of skill is learning how to get out of the habit of a left-well stack and maintaining that maxout-pace on a more competitively optimal setup.
I just checked out Anna's stream after watching this video, and during the equipment check it also looks as if she's playing on an LCD. If correct, this would put her at another disadvantage. With a right well and a CRT, she could definitely go far.
@Manveru31 That heavily depends on the manufacturer and the model. And even then, that's still not standard competition equipment, which would still put her on an uneven playing field compared to other high level competitors.
@Manveru31 crt are way lower latency than 20 ms. I can see how you could almost get to crt level with a great emulation, even faster using run ahead emulation, but with console plugged in, and factoring analog to digital in addition to that?
It's something really special when an uncle and niece bond so tightly over video games to the point where they can have friend level conversations while gaming away. That got me right in the wholesome feels. Every man out there could only dream of having such a kick ass niece who is always dead set on annihilating their high score in a game. Good luck to both of them and may they Tetris on!

It’s amazing what hobbyists can achieve with no knowledge of strats. I remember playing Super Mario Bros on the NES with my dad when I was 4-5 years old and he would show me all the secrets he and his sister had just come across 15 years earlier just by exploring, never having any magazines or such. Then we didn’t play much for a while but one day the NES was up and running again and he’d popped in Mario. I sat in awe watching this 53 year old man who hadn’t played this game, or any video game, in 10 or maybe even 15 years run through Mario like it was yesterday. I told him about Speedrunning and that people were clearing the game in under 5 min. He said that surely that was impossible and then I told him that I’d just timed him to sub 10 min while actively hitting secrets and not taking the shortest route, for his 3rd or 4th run in so many years, with age and lack of use against him. Well, he didn’t keep playing long, complaining about his thumbs, and he has no interest in getting better times, but I think he was proud of himself for a while
I'm so glad you made this video. I joined his stream yesterday and had SO many questions. This is awesome, THEY are awesome. Can't wait to see more of them

I'm commenting on this old video as I've just discovered this world, thanks to the Blue Scuti news. I've been playing Tetris for many years, from the beginning, I'd wager. I always play to the left well, as you put it. Never thought about the disadvantage, and when I saw others building for the right, I figured the preference was my left-handedness.
Well I was not expecting something so pleasant and wholesome today. But my life, and the world in general, needs more wholesome. Thanks for pointing them out.
This was such a sweet video! I absolutely love Tetris, and I can kind of relate to this. My grandpa loves puzzle games, and he played a lot of Tetris when I was younger. I remember seeing him play it frequently when I would visit him. 😄

Great video! I was really glad to see it live but it's even more awesome to see this piece of Tetris history preserved and to be able to see the highlights of the interactions between Anna, Mike, and the chat!
If Anna qualifies and corrects her well positioning, there's a solid chance she can get an upset early and effectively correct herself to a higher seeding. Aside from the left well, her play seems pretty damned worthy of the upper half of the seeding.
@@JimmyBoosterCrate she didnt make it but she was on the semi pro one and if she changes her game there she could very much destroy everyone in there 🤣
@@TheDanielradio The score is the seeding, you nailed it, but as with any good seeding, you're totally incentivized to seed higher, as the higher your seed, the longer until you face a seed that is above you (hence why 1st seed will face last seed round one and, assuming no upsets, 2nd and 1st will face each other in grand finals). So my comment was based on the fact that her potential to scrape into top 64 might be undershooting her seed and allow her to steal the position from the one above her that she might beat. It didn't happen, of course, but that's bracket predictions for you. Don't forget to watch top 8 this weekend! :0
