just saw Porter at his Second Sky festival this past weekend. Madeon played right before him on both days. It's awesome to hear him say in this 2012 interview that you shouldn't pander to an audience and instead follow your artistic vision. he clearly has followed his own advice since this interview. Love u Porter
thats pretty good for his nothing to be ashamed of. i am 19 and i am barely getting started at producing and porter and madeon are younger than me and are some of my biggest influences.
The term "dj" has developed many meanings over the years. From being just a guy who puts songs on via turntables, to someone who actually mixes and remixes them, and to someone who actually produfes their own tracks/songs. I think deadmau5 was talking about the first type, not the second and third (which Laidback Luke is).
Have you heard of Antigon Moore?? Are you really sure Wolfgang Gartner started the Complextro sound?? Because at that exact same time Firepower was released, Antigon Moore had some complextro tracks too
I fucking love this guy, one because he is from North Carolina :D And 2 because his tracks are just plain fucking amazing. MY dream is to make a track with him one day.
Definitely, I'm not hating on Armin at all. He's a great producer and while I haven't seen him live, I've heard good things. You can be pressing 1 button or 50 buttons; all that really matters is that the show is good, regardless of how you got there imo.
exactly right bro i hear you. That song was the first time id ever heard samples being mashed up and tweaked all together all crazy. I was like "WHAT IS THIS?!"
But it's safe to say that what Afrojack does isn't really anything special at all and Deadmau5 his sets stand out because he actually brings a whole fucking studio and one amazing lightshow every time.
Deadmau5 is cool and all But he's a major hater...towards everything "Glorified button pushers"? I'd like to see him do what afrojack, Tiësto, Armin, Alvaro etc do That's major hypocrisy ....
Then you are a producer NOT a DJ. Go out to some underground clubs and listen to DJs who have been doing what they are doing for 10+ years. Then you will hear what a real set is supposed to sound like. You will notice the way the DJ connects with the crowd and teases them by playing with tension and release and knowing what they want to hear and how they will react. Pushing play and adjusting tempos is like the middle school of DJing. High school and college are all about track selection.
dont get me wrong. i am a fucking huuuge fan of gaspard and xavier but honestly what they do on stage is not all that unique. i mean the giant module on stage is a completely fake prop. but how they mix and mashup their songs live is sick as fuck but what they do live is not that much different than what most people do. they are still my all time favorite duo without a doubt
What's technical about it (legitimate question)? It looks like he just uses a bunch of CDJs to mix prerecorded MP3's. Deadmau5 (and Daft Punk) are the only ones with enough balls to tour with the actual hardware synths used in a song's production and tweak parameters live. Deadmau5 has said that his non-unhooked sets have 17 channels of audio being pushed. He can tweak nearly every parameter of his productions, live.
are u fucking kidding? do u know how complex his sets are?? he brings giant module racks on stage with him and plays moogs and virus ti's live and has everything routed through to his analogs. do u know how ballsy that is let alone difficult? daft punk and deadmau5 are the only people that refuse to take the easy way out of playling live music, regardless of whether difficulty makes a difference, but just for the love of music.
Even if its not technical at all, its better than most acts out there Since Armin actually mixes decently live (even if it's just mixing). Guetta's sets feels fake (even to non dj's), Skrillex cannot mix for shit (trigger finger abuse, and two crates with equal songs on both sides is not mixing, no adjusting bpm, etc.) What's technical about it I don't know (not that big a fan), but definitely giving mad props to Deadmau5 and Daft Punk for their incredible work live, which I get to see soon :)
Then you know what I'm talking about! haha. It isn't an extreme skill. The skill part of DJing is all in the technical abilities and yes, vinyl DJs are the ones that excel there. But saying that DJs are "button pushers" is completely ignoring the "feeling" aspect of the live performance. Sure it isn't a quantifiable and measurable skill but it's still an integral, if not the most important, part of DJing and anyone who calls themself a DJ but can't tune into a crowd is a "button pusher".
Allright i don't want to offend you here but Deadmau5 does not play his moogs n stuff live. He might throw a little live things in here and there but the majority of his sets are pre-written music. Like any other dj plays. The only difference is that Deadmau5 is a gadget freak and wants to define himself from the rest. If he'd use CDJ's he 'd just be like all the other ones which he doesnt want. Pretty sure he could do what he does on some Pioneer decks tho.
ya, that's why deadmau5 himself admits that he doesn't dj lmao his awkward moment of 2011: "being nominated for dj mags top 100 dj's when i don't even own a pair of cd jays"
LOL PORTER COINING THE TERM COMPLEXTRO??!?! LOLO sorry i had to go on a caps spree. Complextro was made by wolfgang technically speaking in his track Firepower. That was the first complextro track. I don't think porter ever produced back then
He's been producing since around 2007 under the alias Ekowraith. Probably earlier than that, actually. But I'm not really sure if he really was the first to coin the term.
Antigon Moore made some tracks at the exact time (maybe before) Wolfgang Gartner released Firepower; I think Porter actually deserve to be coinin the term : )
calling B.S. on that. What makes him so revered is that his audience is to young to know that he is not actually doing anything new. I wouldn't say he is copying as much as using the typical dance music formulas. He walks a well worn path. Even his mouse head was ripped off from Takashi Murakami a very famous japanese artist who was referencing mickey mouse in a twisted psychedelic way with his Mr. DOB character.
Madeon>Martin Garrix Martin is just a mainstream shit like all the edm artists Madeon is doing what he loves with more music..not just a ''same loops'' track
He mentioned madeon before they collaborated and he is a future god
I mean they have been friends for 11 years
lol yeah they've known each other since they were like 14 and 16
Brent 12 and 14
They are old friends.
They are friends
Porter seems like a real humble guy, very down to earth, and so talented!

wow what a cutie, and really well-spoken too
this is a good interview and the interviewer does a great job at doing her job asking key questions.
"Saying that DJs are glorified button pushers is like saying sex is just an up and down motion. It takes the magic out of it"
- Laidback Luke
Politician answer. BOOM!
this guy looks like he will release a great album in 2021 called nurture
I think what makes Deadmau5 so revered is the creativity behind a lot of his song's melodies. Maybe that and how he pioneered a new sound
Jay Mazella people can say what they want deadmau5 is still a god
I KNEW when he said there was someone younger, it'd be Madeon haha
The respect he has for Madeon till now is amazing! ♥
Madeon is 18 then.
thats pretty good for his nothing to be ashamed of. i am 19 and i am barely getting started at producing and porter and madeon are younger than me and are some of my biggest influences.

Porter wasn't the first to make that complextro sound. Wolfgang was as you rightly said but Porter did come up with the name.
Have you heard of Antigon Moore?? Are you really sure Wolfgang Gartner started the Complextro sound?? Because at that exact same time Firepower was released, Antigon Moore had some complextro tracks too
