I am so thrilled to have found this vid. Sir Malcolm has a place in my heart. I grew up in the 60s in Angaston. On occasions of the tourist visits to Angaston of Sir Malcolm, we could hear his whistle when somewhere between Tanunda and Nuri. So we would run across town to the station to see it coming in. Later, my then father in law told me of his time employed at Islington. He apprenticed as a blacksmith in the 30s. He specialized in spring making. Much later on while a supervisor at Industrial Engineers and Springmakers he was asked to rebuild, refurbish or replace the rolling stock springs of the 520. I recall how thrilled he was to return to that work he did for SAR. My memory is dodgy these days but I'm pretty sure he said he was involved in making the original 520 series springs. Also dodgy is my recall of when he did the rework while at IE&SM. Perhaps you guys might suggest when it was. I would guess that was somewhere in the 80s or early 90s.

Hi Rob. I am really pleased you enjoyed this video and thank you very much for commenting and sharing your memories of the 520. It is a beautiful locomotive and it is great to see that SteamRanger are working hard to restore it to operational condition. At some stage I hope to make another video of the loco to show how far the restoration has progressed and what still remains to get the loco back in operation. It will be a big day when 520 leaves Mt Barker for the trip to Victor Harbor for the first time since the late 1990’s. Best regards Rowan.

The piston rings were replaced in 1983. This led to a problem. The brick arch over the the firebox had a habit of collapsing. It turned out that an adjustable baffle plate in the smokebox had been removed in the early 1970's. A new baffle was made and as far as I know, there has been no problem with the brick arch.

What a pity that the 520 and the other steam engines can no longer go to Outer Harbor. It seems that the rails were taken out just before cruising took off in Adelaide. Had those rails not been taken out I can only imagine how awesome it would have been for the passengers on the cruise ships taking these steam engines for day trips from Outer Harbor. The trains would absolutely be full.
In addition to having taken the 520 to Victor Harbor return from Keswick in 1992 where the best part of the ride was through the Adelaide Hills, I also took trains from cruise ships in Alaska and New Zealand, all very popular.
I don't know if it's been thought of but SA tourism and the SA government should be made aware of this possibility.
I personally video all the cruise ships coming to Adelaide so I am aware of how many ships come each season and it's getting stronger every year.
