  • The Case for Mars explores the different discoveries that are taking place on the Red Planet. In this episode, we continue the discussion on Terraforming Mars. We discuss whether or not plants would be able to survive on Mars, and what we would need to do in order to keep them alive. We also look into other means of creating oxygen on Mars, such as NASA's MOXIE experiment, and see what problems are with the current solutions.

    It makes more sense to completely simulate mars environment here and just toss a bunch of seeds in the simulation fields and weight till something grows. That would make more sense. And I also mean that the gravity as well has to be simulated. If it cant be done on earth then a near earth space station would be the next best thing.

      The gravity on Mars isn't an issue. Titan has less gravity than the moon and has an atmosphere that is 1.45 times greater than the earth's. Making Martian gavity a moot point.

    • @johnunderwood-hp8rj

      @Mason Nichols titan does not have a magnetosphere due to it's size but from it's proximity to jupiter. If potentially mars had a large moon then potentially it could have enough gravity in the area to generate a good atmosphere/magnetosphere but it would have to be a moon larger then earth's moon.

    Nice video. Big thumbs-up. I am not in love with the electrochemical process, because, to get an O2 molecule, you also break off a CO molecule which means you're releasing as much carbon monoxide into the atmosphere as you are oxygen. that would be a no-no. All good wishes!

    It will be difficult considering mars core is not moving and theres not much of a magnet field to prevent space rads? Unless the core can get recharged i don't see it possible.

  • @udmbfckx2916
    @udmbfckx2916 4 года назад +1

    Funny that you had to briefly mention Nuking ,GMO foods and Nuclear Reactors, but these are realities that may accelerate the process.
    The MOXIE machinery would have to be continuously running since the O2 may dissipate and even evaporate. Therefore a pathway using both natural and artificial accelerators would be the way to go and make the system more balanced. Of course, it would take more time, "generations" like you stated.
    And yes, there is a reason to colonize Mars. As Mankind is looking to go into ET mode, Mars is the next, most natural way of doing so. You can use the resources available to establish a permanent colony there. Compare this to living in a space station, it would be much harder as the recycling would have to be perfect in order to maintain a closed-loop environment in balance. Any little deviation could be a recipe for catastrophe.
    The Case for Mars is a book I highly recommend. The Mars Society has been looking at this for some decades now and they are the go to source/authority to the first steps that are needed to start it all.

    Awesome Video Martian Wolf. I have a fun question, its about Mycelium. Mycelium here on earth is the vegetative part of a fungus, consisting of a network of fine white filaments. It is kinda like natures neurons for transmitting nutrients to specific parts of the ecosystem. Now, would if future mars astronauts brought mycelium to attempt to grow it in lava tubes so that when plants are eventually grown later on, they will potentially have a better time at decomposing and being reused.

    • @MartianWolf
      @MartianWolf  5 лет назад +3

      That's a fascinating question. Anything that shortens the timeframe of terraforming Mars should be looked into. But I do not know if Mycelium can survive the hostile Martian environment. The lava tubes do have a more stable temperature range and much less exposure to radiation, but you still have the low pressure of the atmosphere. I would be interested to see how well they would grow in a recreated Martian environment here on Earth.

    1. What would happen to our effort of creating a breathable atmosphere if the lack of a strong magnetic field failed to prevent solar radiation from stripping the atmosphere away as fast as we could create it?
    2. Nature, and evolution is stranger than we think. Could there be organisms that have already solved evolutionary problems in this hostile (to us) environment? If so, how do we address the ethical conundrums?

    Before sending life there, first bombard the surface with asteroids and comets in order to improve the chemistry, water content, atmosphere, axial spin, magnetic field, and orbital position. Maybe even nudge it a bit further into the habitable zone. Only send life after it stabilizes. Bombardment after seeding would be a biological catastrophe.

  • @RichardJenkinsFxCreations
    @RichardJenkinsFxCreations 5 лет назад

    Well even if its hard all we need to do is catch a few comets that mostly water Ice and have them smash in the Martian atmosphere. You introduce tons of water to the planet which thickens the atmosphere and water really loves to hold heat which causes the planet to heat up. I'll keep up the bombardment until the atmosphere is thick enough to block cosmic radiation which is hard to block than solar radiation.

    It seems pretty obvious if we ever decide to (agree to?) terraform Mars it will take combination of many techniques. I think the first step in the no doubt generational project would be to bombard Mars with icey asteroids or small moons. Adding water, greenhouse gases and heat energy (via the force of the collisions).

      CJD Great point, I’m a few other videos I talk about how important the atmosphere is to terraforming. I think the asteroid/comet/moon idea would definitely work, but if we have a colony on Mars before then, it could definitely draw people away from that solution.

      You want to erase the history of a planet? Why? Haven't we seen enough of that here?

      History is meaningless without an observer. If we were talking about Barsoom instead of dead Mars it would obviously be very different. This discussion is about terraforming i.e. changing a dead rock into a close Earth analog. I was postulating an efficient way to do that. Whether or not humanity decides to do it is another question entirely.

    Is it possible/ feasible/ beneficial to crash Phobos or Deimos into Mars?

    • @MartianWolf
      @MartianWolf  5 лет назад +2

      Technically it is possible, whether or not it is feasible with modern rocket capabilities, probably not. There are a lot of theoretical approaches to redirecting asteroids, that could be implemented on either Phobos or Deimos, but deorbiting a moon would take a lot of energy. If you find that interesting I could possibly do a video covering that topic in the future.

    • @BloodyKnives66

      Technically we just need to slow down the moon enough that it loses orbit slowly and the planet does the rest with its gravity.

    It's too cold that the CO2 is turning to ice, plus X rays, gamma rays ( no ozone protection). And what about the energy coming from the sun; is it enough.
    What about the atmosphere pressure, and the third of the gravity we have on earth?
    Those are some of the challenges that come to mind.
    May be some kind of under ground plantations with the right conditions.

    Great explanations in theory. But Agriculture, as during Stone age, must go into the field in practical terms. And that is what Perseverance is right now doing with the environment of planet Mars. It is going there with a bang most probably as a loaded cowboy or as was the first human being on planet earth. Anyway thanks.
