    Meanwhile, us, cat-dog people, mock you for being so silly as to think you had to choose a side to begin with. You can actually like both. You can enjoy both. This might come as a surprise to you lot, but contrary to what you may have been told, dogs and cats are not mutually exclusive. Your dog won't mind if you don't pledge your undying hatred towards cats, and vice versa.

    Petrushka-the kitty love of my life-lived to be 16, and he definitely loved me. We had a complex relationship because black-and-white cats tend to be very smart, which included periods of time when one or the other of us was miffed about something. Twenty-plus years later, I still miss him. I loved the musky smell of his neck when he had been sleeping.

    I am a cat person though I love - mostly - all animals (mosquitos and such are not too dear to my heart). I think it is more about MY longing for independence that fits more with a cats way of being. I fill their bowls with food and get on with my day outside the house and be back in the evening, filling their bowls again. Dogs need more work as far as I understand from friends that own dogs.

    My cat is super needy and affectionate. She would spend most of her day cuddling if she could, and likes to lean into me, press her head against me, and reach a paw out and wrap it around whatever she can reach of me. Her ideal life would involve almost constant physical contact. She's definitely not independent at all. The difference I guess is she has a toddler like lack of ability to understand other people's desires. I have never seen any evidence that she knows what I want and deliberately doesn't do it. As far as I can tell the part of her brain that considers what I want or that tries to work as a team together is just not that developed, so the degree of imagination many dogs show about doing what you want is kind of beyond her. Nor does she seem to understand the concept of leadership or authority. She does, however, learn quickly what I will move away from her if she does certain things, and learned very quickly to e.g., keep her nails in when she pats my ankle with her paw. I don't think independent vs needy is really it... some cats are independent and some are needy.

Our bobtail boy is rather independent, but would always take a nap near either of his humans. Every time I open the bathroom door there's at least one of them waiting right outside. Can't call any of them independent -- demanding when it comes to meal time. I think many people mistake their sleep-most-of-the-day routine for independence. Are they emotionally independent always? Nah, not all of them, definitely not my calico.

    I think it does say something about your personality if you're a cat person. I know I'm a dog person probably because I did not grow up around cats and I've tried to interact with cats but it's the not knowing if a cat is going to allow the petting or will it scratch or bite. I feel more comfortable around an animal that is more predictable. So I'm not saying that's a good thing but it's just a safe thing. I guess I want to be loved and not judged by a small animal 🤣

    • @EmilysStar
      @EmilysStar Год назад +3

      you should always let the cat come to you, if it comes to you it probably wants attention and wants to be pet (always try the top or sides of the head and maybe the back of the neck, some cats have issues with being touched on their back towards their tail by strangers). If it doesn't approach you, it wants to be left alone. Also sometimes cats get overstimulated by being pet and they might give you a nip to say stop, but it will never be a blood-drawing bite like dogs might do if they feel stressed. I've had both cats and dogs and when you know their behaviours cats are far more predictable than dogs.
