The Failure of Blumhouse's NIGHT SWIM (Explored)

- January is often a graveyard shift for movies, a time when studios release films they have no confidence in. Yet, in this cinematic wasteland, some horror films have consistently found fertile ground. The trend has given rise to many high-concept thrillers that began their years with a bang.
The previous year's horror-comedy 'M3GAN' set a high bar, and it was with a mix of skepticism and hope that I approached Blumhouse's latest offering, 'Night Swim,' directed and written by Bryce McGuire. The film's quirky premise of an evil swimming pool suggested potential for at least a few laughs if not outright terror. Unfortunately, it proves to be a disappointing addition to the genre, merely paddling in the shallow end of creativity.
The movie features Wyatt Russell and Kerry Condon playing Ray and Eve Waller, who, along with their two children Elliot and Izzy move to a suburban home seeking a new start. Ray, a former Major League Baseball player, is grappling with Multiple Sclerosis, a condition that ended his career but brought him closer to his family. While Eve, a school administrator and former Navy brat is determined to establish a safe and normal life amidst the challenging circumstances.
However, their idyllic family existence soon becomes disrupted by eerie experiences around their new in-ground pool, where each family member encounters mysterious and sometimes menacing visions. Despite the promising setup and solid performances from the leads, McGuire's adaptation, an evolution of the short film he originally developed with Rod Blackhurst in 2014 is disappointing.

This film feels like a horror short on RUclips that got dragged out into a feature film
Yep. It was a short film turned feature, but didn’t have enough juice to make it to the end
The funny thing about your statement is that anytime you see a horror short on RUclips, there are loads and loads of comments begging to make it into a creature feature.
smile was a horror short and it was actually good. not very scary but this movie was hot shit. smile actually had its creepy moments
Here's the thing, between the 70s and 80s we used up all the good horror ideas, Jason Voorhees and his mommy issues, A nightmare on elm Street or what to do with minor attracted persons (Freddy's a kiddy diddler and murderer and is rightfully burned alive), Micheal Myers pre geriatric rampage, the exorcist minus the patriarchy references to two men saving a life where one dies in the process, and alien before ridley Scott decided to work on the really big questions and provide answers to none of them
@@deandredunbar9618lol smile was good? Are you acoustic?
This worked as the short film or that one Are You Afraid of the Dark episode. As a story goes though there just isn’t enough for a feature length movie. Also, it makes me think of that youtube sketch, Shark Pool. Where there’s a shark in the pool at a classic late teen party, killing the kids. There’s one logical character that’s like, “just don’t get in the pool!”
Why call it "Night Swim" if the malevolent entity also attacks the swimmers during daytime?
😂
That part
The original title was "Night Swim Comma But Also Swimming During the Day Should Be Avoided" but the test audiences weren't fans so it was shortened.
Who cares? It's a movie.
It's just a play on words to indicate what the movie is about, not meant to be taken literally?
This just shows that it isn't how good the effects and cinematography are but the dedication of the script. Writing will always be the backbone of making memorable, well-told movies.
I've always felt like film is like the human body, and the director is the heart, and the writing is the brain.
I dont know people go one about Art the clown
@@raynightshade8317 I think it tends to be the acting / visuals / writing. One can be absolutely bonkers good and carry the movie, but it's going to be one of those things that it's all that people remember about it, and nobody will care what else happened with that film.
@@Can_O_Crayola I think it goes writing, acting then visuals. Prometheus had both great actors and effects but my god the dialogue and choices made me cringe so much.
It's funny that you pointed out how the story seemed to be made up on the fly. I've been watching old episodes of Face Off, and he was one of the directors from the season finale and I noticed how he constantly had these big ideas and was changing his mind on how he wanted things to look for just a 2 minute short film. I can't imagine what having someone with no clear vision or a constantly changing one would be like for a feature film.
I think Wyatt Russell is going places. He is a very good actor
reminds me alot of bray wyatt
He was really good in Overlord, a very underrated zombie movie. I also felt like he added complexity to John Walker in the MCU. He also flawlessly played a young version of his father in Monarch Legacy!
@@StormX6 I think that's a lot of why he's great. Has connections through his father and acting chops from him too, happy they did what they did in Monarch.
I thought he was fantastic in overlord and black mirror. I didn't even know he was Kurt Russell's son before seeing those too.
He was great in 22 jump street
The amount that this man’s baseball career was made a focal point was actually laughable
You know haunted swimming pool sounds kind of hokey but then the ancient spring theme made it make sense and I suspended my disbelief(really glad I can do this). Kind of like 80s cheese horror but I enjoyed the movie.
Yeah I thought the idea was brilliant, but the execution was a bit dissapointing
Yeah definitely got like a "The Mangler" or "Death Bed" or "The Lift" vibe from the premise.
If I have to remind myself to suspend my disbelief while watching a movie, to me, the movie isn’t the best movie.
Only way I became scared with pools was the Are You Afraid of the Dark episode with the pool zombie.... Which this movie felt like it was influenced by.
oh yeah its the haunted mask or something
@@eddiew2325That's Goosebumps
The dead man's float ... It's considered one of afraid's scariest episodes
I got the same vibes as well
@@Screaminizzy no, it was are you afraid of the dark. that episode was actually called ‘tale of the dead man’s float?’
Blumhouse needs a new hit. They’ve had so many flops lately with Halloween Ends, Exorcist Believer, FNAF, and now this. It’s gotten me worried about the Dead By Daylight movie
Ive been saying this
Wait....didn't FNAF kill at the box office????
While I agree with you, FNAF was their highest grossing film they've ever released - it even beat out Split. Definitely not a flop, even review wise it did okay. I consider it a step above Goosebumps for kids getting into horror, but not ready for an actually scary movie lol
You know whats funny i got tickets to see this movie, but unfortunately i got covid before i managed to see the movie... i think i dodged a bullet there
Sorry to hear you got sick, but like you said you dodged the film. Hope you feel better soon buddy!
This kind of reminds me of an episode of Are You Afraid of the Dark where a malevolent spirit tries to drown anyone who swims in the school pool because it was built on his grave.
Yes! I remember that episode!
Dead man's float
This movie felt like a lost meant-to-be Goosebumps episode. It was overall goofy and I got a lot of yawns from it, I see this as a fun drunk night with your group of friends without taking anything seriously. If it tried to scare me it failed to do so lol.
Children's shows have done haunted pools better. Obviously nothing is new.
*Cough Courage the cowardly dog’s puddle episode cough*
Are You Afraid of the Dark? did a hunted pool episode in the 90s!
Yeah are you afraid of the dark it's one of its most infamous (aka traumatized kids) episodes
@@sakurakitsunestaryeah it was the only episode that creeped me out
You always tell it how it is! You don’t overly shit on content which I appreciate, you’re a true YT OG
Cheers mate
By the sounds of it, if they had learnt into the esoteric horror of something like SCP-2316 (you do not recognize the bodies in the water) have the spirit operate more like a general mental infection, it might have been a better story. Maybe have the pool be its source but after it gets awakened it goes on to infect/hunt the entire suburb, anywhere that draws water from the spring. But do understand that would ballon the budget dramatically of a small horror film to focus on one house/family to go to a whole neighborhood.
I enjoyed the water puns and word play.
Yeah basically Amityville Horror but swimming pool centered.
This movie had some good moments and the idea is scary but it definitely didn't use it's full potential with how scary it could be.
Exactly!
I don't know why but when I first saw the trailer for this movie it made me think of the swimming pool scene in Aliens versus Predator requiem.
I think that was your subconscious warning you, on not to watch this.
Still can't understand how someone thought a "spooky pool" was a good idea?
So the previous family actually avoided the water…this family hears this and are like “lol let’s look further into this”
The only good thing that came from this movie was your review on it! Great content, as always, man
Honestly as soon as I saw the first ad on RUclips, I knew it would suck. Ooooh a haunted swimming pool!! Sounds like something Steven King would write about when he’s sitting in a nursing home, unable to cope with the fact his a has been
Hey guys. The pools haunted. Especially at night.
Ok guess we won’t go swimming in it
Yeah that’s what I was thinking. Ok who wants lunch? Popeyes?
What is a big slap in the face is the fact the previous owners actually avoided the pool.
I had so much hope for this film.
Many thanks for another fantastic video
Who the hell ever thought a haunted pool that grants wishes would be scary anyway.
You can always tell when a movie was originally a RUclips short that has now been dragged out to feature length
I'm actually really glad I passed up on this it looked interesting from the trailers and there were a few good blumhouse films I saw in the past few like Truth or Dare Happy Death Day and Freaky
All these water puns got me grinning despite everything
Perfect honest review of this movie
Well done per usual… When I saw the trailer, I knew they wasted time and money!
Hey for an indie film on youtube this has still become another profitable venture for Blumhouse!
Im really liking the shorter videos 👍
That writers strike really killing out here; the real horror movie is the schlock we’re getting XD
I was left wanting more.
That Are You Afraid Of The Dark episode was scarier to be honest
i love how people cant see a movie will be bad from the trailer
Love the video Can you do Department of Mysteries and Azkaban from Harry Potter
I enjoyed it. Good movie. It was worth watching
The dark pooling water does look aminously gross to fall in.
I almost drowned in a pool when I was three. And again when I was thirteen. The kicker? It was the same pool. Been hydrophobic ever since.
As someone who believes in the supernatural Niyat, I have heard that water acts as a spiritual sponge sometimes, so it seems the pool acts as a selfish Fountain of Youth.
Thanks for the video!! See you later!! Stay safe.😊
Great reason I should be scared of the public pools
Blumhouse really scraping the bottom of the sinkhole
Maybe should have been body snatchers with the pool and Rebecca early on takes Elliots place and understands how Elliots mother would never make the same choice her own mom did. Which makes her decide to help the family.
Literally just got back from the cinema watching this. Thought it was awful
My opinion on this one was that it wasn't bad, but I'll probably forget everything that happened in it by next year.
When I first saw the teaser trailer, I thought it was going to be a horror movie about a monster mermaid. But no; it's just a lame haunted pool. 🤦🏻♀
So it's an evil swimming pool??
Swimming pool with world domination plans 🤌
I haven't seen this movie myself, but I would compare it to Oculus (2014), a strange haunted inanimate object that terrorizes an unwitting family. But were Oculus succeeded Night Swim failed. The biggest difference that I see is the mystery surrounding the "haunted" object. In Oculus, the mirror's history is explored, but its power is never explained which forces your mind to explore and try to explain it. The unknown is the most terrifying thing, i.e. why most people are afraid of the dark. But this movie tried to use a weak explanation and shifting the power between the pool, the pool water, and just water in general.
Studios need to stop grabbing up great horror shorts, this movie, Lights Out, Smile, etc. What makes these short so terrifying is the quick pace and unexplained entity, but when you flush it out to a full length feature they fall flat.
Pls make a video on Grave Encounters, but for a franchise, pls do leprechaun
The trailer made my friends and I think this was a parody of horror. Girl seemingly just plays Marco Polo by herself while no one answers and she refuses to just open her eyes and get out. It had to be a joke
No cap did Blum house yeet this mid TikTok to theaters
It was alright worth getting out of the house for if nothing else
Slotslights, I know that lol🤣🤣🤣
The water puns in this video were scarier than night swim.
I thought night swim was about eldritch horror lmao
When did it come out? I saw two commercials and didn't hear anything else about it
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
I’ve had that fear when swimming alone at night. Only in my personal home pool though, and it’s been bad. When swimming in the community pool alone at night that intense irrotational fear never came up. Weird.
Just like the lights out short that was pretty good but didn't work as a feature length
Yeah. Maybe Blumhouse should do an anthology series out of these ideas instead of trying to draw them out to feature length.
Anyone who saw that trailer and stepped on the hypetrain, you deserved to be dissappointed
It could have been better, but overall I thought it was pretty good
Glad you enjoyed it mate
Excellent breakdown and review. Blumhouse doesn’t offer a lot of duds, but this one definitely disappointed.
It reminds me more of an episode of “Are you afraid of the dark” take place in a school swiming pool with a ghoulish looking creature in the water.
The idea was there, very eerie. Scares needed to be better. The mystery and suspense carried it. Lots of evil has happened there, maybe even in the town
So… it’s like the opposite of Amityville Horror except with a pool… instead of a t0rtur3 basement?
I know it’s a bad review when the worst puns get broken out early
Blumhouse has been flying too close to the sun for a minute minute....
This storyline would’ve fit better had it been a house by the beach and the supernatural backstory been sirens/mermaids. I feel like that would’ve been much creepier. 🤷🏼♂️
❤
Without watching the video and having seen the movie I must say it was definitely subpar (as is most modern horror movies), it felt like a number of standard horror movie tropes thrown into one, also I think the acting was also questionable in some scenes. As an aside, does Blumhouse have a monopoly on the industry of horror movies? Their name is attached to nearly every horror movie I see previews for.
Sounds like it had promise. Bummer
Hey since the new Ghostbusters movie is coming up can you explain slimers origin story
So that portajohn ass sucker from the x files? LOVE THIS CHANNEL! ALWAYS quality content.
This movie felt like Talk To Me but with a swimming pool 🤷🏾♂️
this movie sounds good but the fact there is no explanation for the hunting and the spirits is very upsetting I hate movies with lose ends
If the water was haunted could you just bottle it up and burry it somewhere?
It was a good movie
I actually thought it was really good. All the reviewers are hating on it though. Classic.
Same here. Most people hate didn't even watch the movie
@@herbthegreat5226 literally, and the reviewers hating because it "wasn't scary enough" or "too predictable" cause they don't know how to just enjoy a classic scary movie.
@@gonadiator Nothing about it was ''scary'' though. XD
its a portal to netherworld!
this is going to be a sleeper hit. i hope, anyways. i really enjoyed this movie from start to finish.
don't believe the hype. if you go in fresh you'll enjoy this flick
Ummm, can you just not go in the pool after you see a freaky ghost creature in it or is it one of those ... Nah, it'll be fine.
The commercials made it look less scary than those "Are you afraid of the dark?" shows. A haunted swimming pool? What's next? A haunted toilet? A haunted lawn? A haunted driveway! The premise just screamed, "This is going to suuuuck" for me. Jump scares without the scare.
A scary pool can work if you make it cosmic horror and never show to much of the monster. Maybe make it more like that anime short film Final fantasy with the kids breaking into the schools pool at night. It's on YT if you want to watch it. (It's gory warning)
A haunted swimming pool?
I'm glad Hollywood is on its knees.
GLASS SHARK, GLASS SHARK
Blumhouse stay missing the mark yet money keeps being thrown at them, mind You, they're very profitable.. A real shame.
As YMS said, they take a gamble on everything. Sometimes they make things like Truth or Dare, Unfriended, Ma, or Night Swim and lose, and then recoup their losses with The Purge, Insidious, Get Out, and M3gan.
I want you know about the Wishing well
This is just an old Are You Afraid Of The Dark episode they fluffed out like a shady butcher fluffs up a sausage with water and corn starch.
Horror movies tend to be garbage. Night Swim isn’t garbage, it’s mediocre. It was predictable, but the acting was decent in my opinion, and I liked the message and theme of the story.
When i saw the trailer i just though "what a dumb idea for a horror movie". Thats a bad sign right there.
Haunted PoOoOOoOoooL!!!
from the ad this movie seemed interesting but I tried watching it and while i enjoyed some of the concepts and scares I found it overall boring.
This movie has some inspiration from Tales To Tell In The Dark here, but execution is delivered badly here.😂
I hope the next Movie is a Haunted Toilet
this is just me. i love going to give the new blumhouse movie a try, but the premise of this movie just sounded bizarre. I legit couldnt really believe a movie about a haunted swimming pool can be any good.
I will still support blumhouse but i am not surprised this movie got very bad ratings .
That's the irish bird from the walking dead from season 3 who leads Rick into the woods, and tries to stab him.
Ray should have slowly go mad due to the pool healing abilities. He starts as the loving father but due to the allure of returning to baseball, he starts sacrificing things I need the most to him before moving on to the cat and then his son
