Our playground was gravel. Then when you fell you got a nice pebble pattern on our legs and arms, maybe the face also, depending on whether you dropped off the monkey bars or were yeeted off the spinner, or roundabout, whatever you call that thingie that possibly killed more kids on the playgrounds than any other piece of equipment.

I was so scared for my daughter but we were both safe. Guardia angel was there for us that day. Never went on that again, not even alone..that was too much to handle.
We were told not to come home crying. If you did get hurt and went home crying, we were yelled at. It was our own fault. Which it was. And we would be right back out there playing on it again.
Our parents didn't even know where we were. We jumped on our bikes in the morning, came home for lunch, and then in for dinner. Then we go out at dusk and catch fire flies. Of course we stay within shouting distance. Those were the days.
I grew up near tons of lava rocks in the middle of no where. The neighbor kids and 6 of us would be out all night playing light tag with flash lights. Its amazing the things your do when you dont have ipads and your bored. Their were days where everyone would be covered in welts from crab apple wars lol

And the Mom sayings, I don't want to hear a word when you get hit with one of those. But my favorite is "if you break your leg, don't come running to me" lol I want to be young again

When he landed in the sand he received a compound fracture in his wrist. When we were back in class he called out to the teacher about “the red stuff” getting on his project. She flipped her lid when she noticed it was blood. I remember it like it was yesterday. Poor kid! That playground was the best though! My favorite was the concrete sewage pipes we had for climbing on and through. Talk about HOT in that Arizona heat. 😆

It’s interesting that I still experienced that as a millennial but in Moldova, former part of USSR. It was 1994-2000 and we still had metal slides, wooden and metal playground structures and climbed water pipes. Boys climbed garages because they were usually a separate structure- like a row of garages completely separated from buildings

Kids back then in the '50s were tough as nails, even the little girls who wore dresses because that's what little girls wore back then. Talk about going down a hot slide, try doing it in a skirt! Nothing between hot metal and tender young skin. We'd throw dirt on the slide to help cool it down and also made it slicker!

Born in 1962, I am so familiar with the metal playground. Our metal slide worked really well. It also had a hump in the middle so that when you hit it just right, your butt didn't touch the slide for a fraction of a second. 😂❤

Great routine. Grew up in 70s and 80s with metal slides, monkey bars, swings with big chains and flimsy plastic seats. Riding bikes all day, getting lost in the woods, building tree houses with nails and splintery wood. We had awesome neighborhoods growing up with lots of kids around. And we used to traverse the busy streets end of school year to the local zoo and park for a picnic and to ride bumper cars and other who-knows-how-long-ago-inspected rides.
Yep! 500 degree Fahrenheit slides, monkey bars that would destroy you on the way down if you slipped, the merry-go-rounds that would sling you off into orbit if you didn't puke first, and the one nobody has mentioned yet - the seesaw which would give you a vertebrae fracture when your "friend" jumped off. And don't get me going on suicide missions down the sledding hill in the summer in a homemade go cart made from scrap wood, baby buggy wheels, a piece of rope to "steer" it, all held together by 4 rusty bent nails.

Even though I was born in '99, I lived in rural Kansas with a park that was built in like the 50's or 60's right across the street from my house. And I had 8 siblings so there was all types of tomfoolery going on. There was a jungle gym completely made from metal that idk how many times I bumped my head on. And the metal slide was the best to go down in the rain because you did get shot like a rocket.
I recall sixth grade guy hanging by feet inside jungle jim...let go and head first into the bare pavement that we all played on and had fun!kid conked his head teacher&..oh. o.k.
Very funny! I'm pretty sure I remember people running around and shocking kids after going down the plastic slides during my elementary school recess. There's a big build up of static electricity after you slide down one of those. And monkey bars and things to climb on do help kids learn to balance. Learning to fall correctly should be included in physical education.
I did that on a Shetland pony. I didn't know about the barbed wire... but he did. Luckily, the chicken feathers had piled up so high behind the coop that when he threw me off, it covered most of the barbs.
Too funny. I was one of those kids that tried defying gravity on the swings, I however had a good grip but it was a jolt when the swing came down to a quick stop....and yes it was logging chain bolted to a plank.
Lived thru those days. The slides were fast and shiny and hot but for some of us not fast enough, so we got wax paper from home and we sat on the paper on top of the slide and man did we pick up some speed. But hitting the concrete at the bottom of the slide with bare knees wearing shorts I had bloody knees all summer. Those were the days.
You forgot one important thing. On the slides we would take waxed paper and go over it with that. Boy did it really slide after you waxed it. Thanks for the memories.
When he talked about going up the slippery metal ladder, my knee instantly started to hurt. And it was right in the spot that the step would bang against my knee when I slipped on the ladder. I remember that pain well! 😂
This was GREAT and what memories! Born in the 1950s I grew up playing on all these things that could burn you, rip your skin off, break your bones or knock your teeth out. Good times! And because we weren’t content with just that we had a brook and an enormous culvert behind our house in “the woods” where you could go rafting into it in warm weather or sledding into it when the brook froze. You could go miles through that culvert and end up a town away and fall through the ice if it wasn’t solid enough. It’s fun and adventures todays kids will never have, so sad
We had a plastic slide and they can be dangerous too. Don't grab onto the under side of the slide or you will slice your hand open. If you are heavy it will bow and collapse in the middle. And if there was a chip in the slide and a piece of that was sticking out that would snag your shirt and would be nearly choked to death. And electric shock just by touching it.
We learned cause & effect, and consequences of our actions. One playground game I never hear about is Crack the Whip. It seemed I was always the poor kid at the end who went flying. 😅
I remember in the 50’s we were seeing who could jump out of the swing and go the farthest. The winner complained about his foot hurting, but we decided it wasn’t broken as he could wiggle his toes. The next day I went to his house and he had wires holding the bones of his foot together.
Everytime I hear stories about the metal slide of death I swear I can feel the experiences as if I was just on one of those things. I am so glad I am a younger Gen Xer who got to experience the more fun and dangerous playground equipment. 😆

My husband worked for a company that took out the old metal playgrounds and put in the new plastic ones. He brought the old metal one and we put it up. We had the swings, jungle gym, teeter totter, merry round out in the backyard. We were the most popular house on the street. He didn’t get the slide but we had a metal ladder going up into a tree that also has a tire swing. We had a big pile of dirt that the kids dug up and messed with . We had bon fires and homemade peach ice cream for birthday parties. We went out peach picking first which was fun too. As they go older there might a dozen or so teens dueling with “light sabers” they’d made. The kids were good and they policed themselves since they knew I’d shut them down if there were problems. I enjoyed it and I knew most of the local kids even as they got older. That is a great protection to keep your teens safe. My kids knew they could make me the bad guy to save face if they were being pressured to do something stupid. The other kids knew I would beat their as$. I still have all that equipment. I’m thinking of selling it if I find the right buyer. Someone who lets kids be kids. I also showed my kids how to safely use hand tool. I felt it was important to know which kid needed to wear a helmet most of the times as early as possible.
I remember playing "King of the hill" on monkey bars as a kid on several military bases back in the mid-60s - seemed to be 'a thing' for some reason. We kept the emergency rooms at the hospitals in top form! ! can still feel the scars from the stitches on my earlobes... 🙉😩🤕😝

Dodge Ball...the game where if you didn't want to get hammered by the ball, you just learned to run faster! 🤣 We used to dare each other on the swing set to see who could swing the highest AND jump from the seat at its highest point. Our teachers NEVER once told us to stop and NO ONE DIED! We'd get that Merry Go Round as fast as we could get it to spin. No one flew off. I went to a rural school so our equipment was on dirt. We played TAG aka Touch And Go too. We played flag football with a skosh of tackle involved. Sadly, Dodge Ball and TAG have been determined as too violent to play and there are no more Merry Go Rounds because they too are considered dangerous. It's beyond ridiculous! We used to swing out of the hayloft and in mid-air hope we weren't going to overshoot that big hay pile. I know I did several times. We used to swing on a rope and land in the river. Holy crap! This brings back so many memories. Yep, we had all that stuff too, mostly all on pavement though. Lots of steel. We had an awesome merry go round. We would takes turns pushing or riding. We would get that thing spinning so fast, you could hang off the sides horizontally. I'm totally serious. I remember a couple times kids losing their grip and flying off, but they would be right back to do it again. Man, those were great times. I went back to the school years later and sadly , all that stuff was gone.
My sister, my older sister, literally did fall swinging so high that she went right over and around fell onto the gravel had to be taken to the hospital. We weren’t sucky Poohs, like the kids are treated nowadays.
We had metal pump swings….. if you let go of the pump handles, they sprung back and smacked you hard repeatedly, while you got whiplash. And the constant blisters on your palms from the metal monkey and trick bars. And my younger sister went flying off the metal merry-go-round, because she weighed so little that the momentum it had in spinning made it so she could not hold on. Bruises, blisters, stitches and broken bones…. All part of the playground.
We would take pieces of waxed paper with us to the park, sit on them and go down the slide to make it slick. Then sit back and watch other kids go rocketing down and skid along the dirt at the bottom.
Every playground was made of blazing hot metal in the 60’s 70’s and part of the 80’s! 😂

my great grandmother had yard darts unfortunely they were hidden when we were found playing the wrong way with them lol. Those things were weapons.

Very funny! I'm pretty sure I remember people running around and shocking kids after going down the plastic slides during my elementary school recess. There's a big build up of static electricity after you slide down one of those. And monkey bars and things to climb on do help kids learn to balance. Learning to fall correctly should be included in physical education.
We rode bikes down the rode knowing a barbed wire fence was. Great fun😂😂😂😂

I did that on a Shetland pony. I didn't know about the barbed wire... but he did. Luckily, the chicken feathers had piled up so high behind the coop that when he threw me off, it covered most of the barbs.

Too funny. I was one of those kids that tried defying gravity on the swings, I however had a good grip but it was a jolt when the swing came down to a quick stop....and yes it was logging chain bolted to a plank.

I used to slide on a rock behind our house. The butt got bruised but because we had no slides at home we continued to do it because it was fun.
Lived thru those days. The slides were fast and shiny and hot but for some of us not fast enough, so we got wax paper from home and we sat on the paper on top of the slide and man did we pick up some speed. But hitting the concrete at the bottom of the slide with bare knees wearing shorts I had bloody knees all summer. Those were the days.

You forgot one important thing. On the slides we would take waxed paper and go over it with that. Boy did it really slide after you waxed it. Thanks for the memories.
When he talked about going up the slippery metal ladder, my knee instantly started to hurt. And it was right in the spot that the step would bang against my knee when I slipped on the ladder. I remember that pain well! 😂

You never see kids climbing trees anymore or a kid just sitting in one after climbing it to the best sitting in the tree spot.
This was GREAT and what memories! Born in the 1950s I grew up playing on all these things that could burn you, rip your skin off, break your bones or knock your teeth out. Good times! And because we weren’t content with just that we had a brook and an enormous culvert behind our house in “the woods” where you could go rafting into it in warm weather or sledding into it when the brook froze. You could go miles through that culvert and end up a town away and fall through the ice if it wasn’t solid enough. It’s fun and adventures todays kids will never have, so sad

I went FLYING off a merry-go-round! I landed so far away, the kids cheered. Got some serious road rash 😂
We had a plastic slide and they can be dangerous too. Don't grab onto the under side of the slide or you will slice your hand open. If you are heavy it will bow and collapse in the middle. And if there was a chip in the slide and a piece of that was sticking out that would snag your shirt and would be nearly choked to death. And electric shock just by touching it.

I remember in the 50’s we were seeing who could jump out of the swing and go the farthest. The winner complained about his foot hurting, but we decided it wasn’t broken as he could wiggle his toes. The next day I went to his house and he had wires holding the bones of his foot together.

Everytime I hear stories about the metal slide of death I swear I can feel the experiences as if I was just on one of those things. I am so glad I am a younger Gen Xer who got to experience the more fun and dangerous playground equipment. 😆
Metal slides are a nightmare. Plastic is better. But those days of biking alone were amazing.

My husband worked for a company that took out the old metal playgrounds and put in the new plastic ones.
He brought the old metal one and we put it up. We had the swings, jungle gym, teeter totter, merry round out in the backyard. We were the most popular house on the street.
He didn’t get the slide but we had a metal ladder going up into a tree that also has a tire swing. We had a big pile of dirt that the kids dug up and messed with . We had bon fires and homemade peach ice cream for birthday parties. We went out peach picking first which was fun too.
As they go older there might a dozen or so teens dueling with “light sabers” they’d made.
The kids were good and they policed themselves since they knew I’d shut them down if there were problems.
I enjoyed it and I knew most of the local kids even as they got older.
That is a great protection to keep your teens safe. My kids knew they could make me the bad guy to save face if they were being pressured to do something stupid.
The other kids knew I would beat their as$.
I still have all that equipment. I’m thinking of selling it if I find the right buyer. Someone who lets kids be kids.
I also showed my kids how to safely use hand tool. I felt it was important to know which kid needed to wear a helmet most of the times as early as possible.
I remember playing "King of the hill" on monkey bars as a kid on several military bases back in the mid-60s - seemed to be 'a thing' for some reason. We kept the emergency rooms at the hospitals in top form! ! can still feel the scars from the stitches on my earlobes... 🙉😩🤕😝
I remember swinging on the " swing set " and when I swung backward, I also leaned forward while in the swing.

The playground I grew up with at my elementary school was made of wood and was built into a bed of small stones. This was in the late 90's.

We had the flying gate & the flying swing. Dangerous & so fun. Split my lower lip open (bit it falling)on the metal monkey bars, 4 stitches. Still wear that scar with pride!! Use to ride the rollers (were the milk cans came down) at the local creamery on the weekend!!!

Ah, yes. Dodge Ball...the game where if you didn't want to get hammered by the ball, you just learned to run faster! 🤣 We used to dare each other on the swing set to see who could swing the highest AND jump from the seat at its highest point. Our teachers NEVER once told us to stop and NO ONE DIED! We'd get that Merry Go Round as fast as we could get it to spin. No one flew off. I went to a rural school so our equipment was on dirt. We played TAG aka Touch And Go too. We played flag football with a skosh of tackle involved. Sadly, Dodge Ball and TAG have been determined as too violent to play and there are no more Merry Go Rounds because they too are considered dangerous. It's beyond ridiculous! We used to swing out of the hayloft and in mid-air hope we weren't going to overshoot that big hay pile. I know I did several times. We used to swing on a rope and land in the river. Let kids be kids.
My Grandma and Mom both used to tell overprotective Moms, "They bend before they break. Stop hovering." 😁

Country school kid, too. Our playground was on dirt, too; swing feet were cemented into the gro9und. Slide was steel; abt 12 feet high. Yeah, good ol' days, huh?

Yep, we had all that stuff too, mostly all on pavement though.
Lots of steel. We had an awesome merry go round. We would takes turns pushing or riding. We would get that thing spinning so fast, you could hang off the sides horizontally. I'm totally serious. I remember a couple times kids losing their grip and flying off, but they would be right back to do it again. Man, those were great times. I went back to the school years later and sadly , all that stuff was gone.

My sister, my older sister, literally did fall swinging so high that she went right over and around fell onto the gravel had to be taken to the hospital. We weren’t sucky Poohs, like the kids are treated nowadays.
We had metal pump swings….. if you let go of the pump handles, they sprung back and smacked you hard repeatedly, while you got whiplash. And the constant blisters on your palms from the metal monkey and trick bars. And my younger sister went flying off the metal merry-go-round, because she weighed so little that the momentum it had in spinning made it so she could not hold on. Bruises, blisters, stitches and broken bones…. All part of the playground.

We had sharp gravel and a buckeye tree.
We would take pieces of waxed paper with us to the park, sit on them and go down the slide to make it slick. Then sit back and watch other kids go rocketing down and skid along the dirt at the bottom.
