What an absolutely wonderful body of work... and refreshingly... SO VERY, fundamentally, different from the grotesque world of "AI Art" atm... Art itself, in its most fundamental, skeletal definition... is communication. Its a language built between artist and audience. Its sinew and musculature built and birthed between two souls in an effort to dance a dance completely unique between the two. ...And to speak slightly of the reason I mentioned "AI Art"... I felt the need to draw a firm line in the sand (...and even now I wish it were a forty yard wall of steel set in stone, surrounded by nuclear landmines) Between what we're seeing with Lieberman's work here, and the gut churning, disposable vats of bile being spewed forth by Algorithmic image generators like Dall-e, stable diffusion, and Midjourney. For anyone who cares to listen... There is a MASSIVE difference between Liberman's art and the cavalcade of crap masquerading as art... I wanted to get ahead of any accusations/correlations before any comments cropped up under the video or in any adjacent places this video may be linked. Not just because I'm aa fan of Liberman's art... but because as an artist myself I find that the education of non-artists on ethics within the art industry inevitably falls to us. (Mostly because gallery owners/Agents/etc are a bit more lenient towards AI... I mean after all, their job is NOT to create art. Nor is it to protect the heart of art.. it's to make money for themselves and their clients. (Essentially their role is oppositional at worst, and at odds at best) So anyways... What Liberman's art could offensively be compared to is referred to as "AI art"... Algorithmic "art" (Tripe) dumped out by self proclaimed "artists" using text prompts fed into a neural network built upon tens of millions of scraped (Stolen) artwork from real artists... Sincerely it makes me physically fucking sick. As I stated previously, art at it's very core is communication. It's a dialogue... a primal scream... a silent stare. It's the signed words between an artists work and the viewer. Now... Art is VERY fluid in what can and cannot (Or ought and not) be considered art, but where there are thousands of debatable soft rules in this definitional regard, There is ONE, non-negotiable... HARD, immovable, nigh omnipotent rule which towers above all else. That RULE... is that a meaning, feeling, or intention is being conveyed by an artist. Essentially, that even when one uses mathematical algorithms and code, much like Liberman... there is... Nay MUST... be a ghost in the machine. there HAS to be a voice, no matter how hidden or whispered, guiding the threads of intent between Artist, Art, and onlooker. With AI "Art" there is no such intention... No meaning. It is by definition, meaningless... because an algorithm has NO soul... NO intention... Whereas Liberman... intentionally builds each line of code... He makes decisions... Sculpts narratives.. he is COMMUNICATING through a medium to the audience. *Sigh* anyways... I felt it necessary to pre-emptively defend this artist and his process lol... Mostly due to the fact that I've seen other artists who use similar processes be compared to AI, when in reality, the art of those artists, AND Lieberman's art (Groundbreaking especially given the climate its being create within) is TRUE art...and is definitionally soulful... while AI "Art" (Garbage) is soulless and undeserving of standing on the same planet as these artists... (Ahem! anyways lmao... rant over. Sorry! This is an issue near and dear to my heart.) Lieberman! If you see this, I adore your work and hope to see more of it as you carry on creating! Much love & Many Well Wishes From New York!
This is really interesting when he talks about the slowness of having it as an object rather than an animation or something on the screen. I've had this exact feeling from the other side. When you have something temporal, or as non-concrete as digital, there is a passivity to the communication that doesn't allow active thinking, especially with moving images. Peace.
This is truely inspirational. As a creative computing student, I was always confused between the definition of a software developer and an artist. I didn't know where should I go and even wondered can the former become the latter and vice versa. But after I watch this video, I think I saw a little hope in myself which really want to create new experience from the daily objects, flows, or stories. Wish I could see this exhibition in this weekend and revoke my passion toward art & technology.
