Just because you can, doesn’t mean you should....I really love this version - sweet, pure tone and good instrumentation. Could have been the definitive version of this Christmas piece for me. But Kelly belts that lyric “Hang a Shining Star...” into the stratosphere with such a loud, piercing climax, that it jars me out of the sublime mellowness of the song. Doesn’t fit the lyric or the song. Maybe good for O Holy Night or another one that builds to that natural cresendo and height.
I see I’m in the minority on this one, but I think the piece’s history is important to consider. It has traditionally been a wistful, almost melancholic song in reflecting on the times of Christmas past. Some prefer the Judy Garland version for that reason. I think there’s probably a middle ground.
For her, that really wasn’t too stratospheric. I think it’s just because the rest of it is almost talking-singing that it seemed like a lot. I think if she’d gone for more of a decrescendo after hitting the note and letting it trail back down in volume, it would’ve worked out better.
