Hi. I'm looking for a Laptop (available in the UK) that can run SL, without spontaneously combusting from heat overload. I'd be using it to show my Dementia ridden Mother things, to see if it helps her mind, and to hang out in the club I manage when she's sleeping (I'm her main Carer but when she's sleeping it would be good if I can socialise, rather than sitting by her in silence, getting upset over her every deterioration). but at the same time, I need it on a Laptop, so when she's asleep for the night, I can leave her room with it, and hang with friends and chill, in sl, etc. I'm likely to have Google Chrome open at the same time, as SL and maybe a Photoshop programme, but nothing else, (oh and it would hold photos and videos from rl) and I'd be running SL via Firestorm. I'm sooo confused as to what I'd need in the Laptop, as A) I'm not computer savvy, and B) the website hasn't been spec updated in a while. Any advice? Thanks in advance. :)
Hey, sorry to hear about your Mum - that must be tough. I'll try and give some advice for your next laptop but generally I've not had the best experience with laptops as overheating tends to be an issue, especially with Second Life. But really you just want to remember 4 key points which I covered in the video. For your processor (CPU) go for 4 cores, with a speed of 3.6GHz or above. Memory (RAM) 8gb is absolute minimum but I would recommend 16GB since you're multi-tasking. Graphics card (GPU) they come with their own memory so I'd recommend at least 2GB. You also need to think about storage. SSD is faster than HDD but more expensive. This is all just my advice, I'm not an expert on your individual circumstances but hopefully this helps a little. I purchased my PC from Cyberpowersystem.co.uk and they have a lot of good recommendations on their website. Wish you best of luck!😀

@@BostonB I'm in UK too. I use a desktop with all the correct specifications. Linden Labs did a test for me and said the horribly low framerate was due to "ping" something and to do with my internet connection. Well Boston, my router was upgraded last year, the upload and downloads speeds are v.good. I'm just a dumb ginger, but I phoned my ISP and told them (as they had doubled my rental for the new router which did nothing for the framerate, and they didn't know what I was talking about. That means that question was not on their "script". I can't use advanced lighting, Singularity starts out ok, then framerate goes low. I don't go anywhere where there are other avis, just furnish "my homes". Got to a point now where my poor avi can't even walk! I think it's time to leave the game, don't you? I will have one more try though with Black Dragon. xx

Hello, I run on an M1 mac, and see generally good results... I am currently considering getting a "gaming" rig (I put it in quotes because I don't game, just not my thing) as I ponder if it's better. I get really good still images (or at least I think I think so). So, two questions : 1) is this still your setup? If not, what's changed? 2) whether or not your setup has changed, how much "better" do you think a scene could be with a gaming rig with good gpu and cpu (I'd likely go high-mid range)? thanks in advance, I love your stuff and totally trust your advice so I'm hoping you'll have some new insight here :)
Thanks for your tips . I replaced my desktop having RT 1030 with RTX 3060 desktop just few days back . My fps is between 400 - 600 and still unable to match the performance with that of old system . Any Advise ? thank you

That’s awesome! Well I’m glad this video helped. I produced it a while ago and will probably do an updated video at some point. It was a massive gamechanger for me changing my computer. But I use it for lots of different things, not just SL. SL needs to be better at being fully optimised so it’s not so resource intensive. Hopefully we’ll see better infrastructure improvements
Hey, I haven’t used it for Second Life so I couldn’t give a fair viewpoint. I’ve heard mixed feedback from people. It’s best to check out the second life forums where people have reported directly.
Scripts don't affect FPS, those run on server side and they won't impact the ability of your machine to render frames, you can have 0.001 ms of script spare time on the server and be rendering 300 frames a second.
For Second Life is not so much the raw processing power of the GPU, but rather the VRAM, SL content creators over use large textures on tiny things to SL can saturate VRAM quicker than a video game made by professionals.
As far as Nvidia VS AMD, it comes down to the drivers, SL runs on a defunct API, OpenGL, any support on the driver level is residual and at best legacy support, AMD here struggles more because their driver development team was (at least in 2019) a single guy, or so it has been told, Nvidia has a much bigger investment in this area and that reflects on support for older stuff. In early 2021 the AMD drivers straight up broke SL on some of their cards and as of January people are being recommended to roll back on their drivers.
Also, perfect pointing out Per Core Performance, I know people that bought i9's to run SL when some i5's would have run it better at a fraction of the cost. You should also mention to avoid laptops like the plague since these are always subpar on power delivery and cooling capacity, not to mention more expensive than a desktop, not upgradable and if a single component fails that usual means it goes in the trash compared to a desktop where every component can be swapped and replaced.
Thanks for sharing Dean! All valid points - and thanks for taking the time to write them down. Large textures on small objects is definitely a huge issue for performance, and you're correct about VRAM 👌
2nd Life runs fine for me on my new graphics card, but when I close the program I get coloured pixels all over the screen and some freezing and black flashing, until I reboot the PC a couple of times. Any ideas?
Hi Boston, I have a question regarding Macs, I have a problem steaming media on my Mac in firestorm, I think it’s due to security, but I’m unsure how to change the settings, and it’s stopping me from being able to load my legacy body hud... do you have any advice? I know it’s a long shot, but I’m getting a little desperate. Thank you in advanced... 😅
Hey! Hmmm I mean usually on your mac it's under System Preferences > Sound, then click Output. And then enable Sound & Media in the preferences menu in Firestorm. But I'm guessing you've already tried that..
I can see you're getting 122.4 fps nice! I'm running a AMD ryzen 9, with Nvidia geforce gtx. on screen 120 fps max but for second Life I never receive more than 50 fps. do I need to configure it to second Life somehow or change cpu settings, graphics processor? if so could you give some information. Basically to achieving 120fps
Hey - I can usually only get 120fps+ on High Setting, and if it isn't in a high-script/high-texture area. If I have advanced Lighting on, my FPS is also usually around 50-70fps, sometimes a lot lower. You have a good tech rig so I wouldnt worry too much about getting 120fps. Second Life isn't optimised in the best way unfortunately.
Sl Was doing my head in cos i have quite a powerful gaming laptop but textures were taking so long to show up sharp from being blurry all the time making shopping frustrating..tried firestorm and blackdragon viewer but still the same and dont like the ui on them..nearly gave up but then i tried the alchemy viewer and problem solved..can run on just under ultra with no lag and good frame rates and textures load real fast and look sharp..i like the way the ui is very similar to the standard sl viewer aswell..never had sl run so good..alchemy viewer is the way forward imo
I recommend that you join the Firestorm support group inworld and ask the question there. Maybe use the SL viewer to log in. I’m not a support technician so I don’t know why the issue is
Thanks for the cool comment! My channel is only a month old so it takes some time to get noticed :) This one seems to be my most popular video so I'll look to produce more tutorials on this subject.
Hello, I am getting myself a new computer "PC" desktop 2021 for Christmas, it must be great for blender and SecondLife, cheap as possible, so what is the best motherboard, processor, memory ect to get... I'm in England..... Thanks
Is there a fix for firestorm lag because i live in asia, and the pings are super ugly, i have fast wifi but because the server location is in US its causing me alot of trouble
the cpu thing can not be stated enough. SL's ancient engine is run almost entirley on your CPU for the VAST majority of things... things you'd even think your GPU would do in other games (i.e. animations and the first rendering pass of the scene are actually done on the CPU... the GPU does the texturing and shading) I have a gtx 1070 which is hard overkill for second life but I am still on an i5 4690k (for now.. i have some new parts to install but I need a few other things before I can) which is a very old cpu at this point and I'm often only around 23ish fps on ultra setting despite my overkill gpu. Most other games I can max out and achieve 100+ fps but not SL because of my old cpu.
That's weird how you got that low FPS. I used to have FX 6300 based clocked with 8GB ram 1600mhz and paired with GTX 1650 super which always gives me 60fps during my exploration. After I upgraded my RAM to 16gb ram the only different is the CL but that dropped huge FPS from SL. I still can't figure out why dual channels RAM really suck for SL.
@@jonkator8254 the FX 6300 and I5 4690k aren't super different from one another in terms of performance. The 1070 however is WAY more powerful than a 1650 so *shrugs* I'm not really sure why my fps used to be so garbage. I've since upgraded to an I7 9600k and a 2070 super and see about 3-4x the fps I used to. It may just be the worlds I frequent vs the ones you might go to. I chill in the star wars roleplay sims and they tend to be poorly built from an optimized performance standpoint (Byss does look pretty though) and the avatars of the players tend to be VERY poorly optimized
I have an HP Probook 650G with Intel i5 6th Gen 6200u 8GB Ram & a 500HDD but it keeps crashing all the time when I am on SL. I bought it refurbished back in January of this year. I am looking at getting an actual gaming laptop that will run SL with no problems what so ever. I am looking at either a Ryzon 7 or an Intel 7 10th Gen and a 512GB SSD with 16 gigs of ram. Any ideas? I really can't afford to go above £800 please help as I spend a lot of time on SL and I like to run my firefox browser at the same time sometimes. I know SL uses a lot of resourses so any advice would be helpful please.
SL doesn't uses that much resources only when you're in a club with around 60-90+ people. Mesh avatars are the ones use ton of resources. Even a full mesh sim doesn't uses as much as avatars.
Can anyone help? I'm disabled (bedridden mostly) suffer with chronic pain. So I need as a lightweight a laptop as possible. Currently my Macbook Air (1.29 kg) is a good weight I can manage. I want to get a gaming laptop for SL. (My dream and aim is to be able to play in Ultra). I bought an Asus Vivobook Pro 14X, AMD Ryzen 9-5900HX, 16GB RAM, NVIDIA RTX 3050, 1TB SSD, 2K 90Hz OLED Display. Because it's the lightest gaming type of laptop I could find that had almost the specs I wanted for SL, discord and graphic design I'd be doing. Problem is you can't upgrade the Ram it's soldered on and there is no 32GB version anywhere for sale. (I even bought mine from Germany as has better specs than any I could find in UK). I'm wondering if I made a mistake and if it would be better to sell my Vivo and get the ROG Zephyrus G14? It's heavier so would be painful for me to use but it does have upgradeable ram! I'm worried being stuck at 16GB of ram, friends on SL have told me I'll lag and struggle with only 16GB of ram. Can anyone give me their thoughts?
Yeah, I mean.. I have a really good Laptop that should top all of the requirements I need for SL to run on Ultra, smoothly yet I'm unfortunately unable to. I have ridiculous lag spikes that plague me, and have been doing so for the past 9-12 years. It's annoying. I do modeling, Sounds, and all sorts of other things and improving the FPS of SL in general would vastly improve the entire experience over all because I love to RP and visit different Roleplay orientated sims that are in terms full cities. No body else seems to lag, but I do and I know my Hardware is better than theirs. It makes no sense; I really shouldn't have to downscale my visuals to do this. 🙁
Sadly SL is designed to under use literally everything on the market. You could have an AMD Ryzen 7 5800x, 32GB of RAM in 4 banks of 8GB, an RTX 3080 and a 5GB/s SSD...SL still runs at nothing framerates...and CPU/GPU in task manger will be hovering around 10% use. If only there was a "use more power you idiot" setting!
I have 128GB of ram and 12 Core Xeon CPU and it still looks like crap in here. Mac pro trashcan which works for even most of new games for me. But SL looks like edgy crap where half of textures are pixelated and this actually been like this for years.. no matter what PC i'd have in my life it was always the worst.. How can it be smooth like you show in this video.. this is impossible.. :(
That sounds rough. I personally don’t associate SL with that. The people I hang out with and the activities I do are more business, social and creative endeavours. But there are age and content restrictions in place for a reason, and I wouldn’t want my younger siblings on there. But then again I'm an over-protective big brother and I don’t want them on the internet at all!! Haha
Second Life is still accessed in the same way by downloading the client. The change is that the regions and services have been moved from a physical datacenter to cloud (like many software providers are doing in some way). So amongst other things, this was aimed to improve overall performance.

I will have one more try though with Black Dragon. xx
Where did u get your gaming pc and monitor from?
My PC is from Cyberpower and my monitor is from Curry’s
I'd like to see a video about making screen recordings in Second Life.
👍👍
firestorm viewer is still considered the best?
I use Firestorm for my everyday usage. I find it’s reliable, intuitive and easy to navigate. For my photos I usually take them in black dragon
Oh my goodness! So jealous of your FPS! I am happy when I get to 30 fps!
Haha don't worry, mine still drops low when I'm in a busy sim!
Covered everything except one main factor. Firestorm Viewer doesn't make use of 64 bit AVX instructions. Black Dragon does, this is why those have better performance in SL
👍👍👍
Do you know what gaming laptops are good for SL?
Hey, I don’t really use laptops for gaming so I couldn’t recommend one in particular from personal experience
Awesome video!
Thanks! Glad it was helpful 😊
Will you be doing best windlight settings for photos with updated firestorm?
@@yethereiam6864 Sure! It's on my content list! :)
@@BostonB Ty so much
Thanks for your tips . I replaced my desktop having RT 1030 with RTX 3060 desktop just few days back . My fps is between 400 - 600 and still unable to match the performance with that of old system . Any Advise ? thank you
(I have to say thanks you so much it’s really helpful for your information👊🏽🏆. )
what i did with pc is get an Mid Tower Dell Offices pc and put in Mid rage GPU in and my Second Life run much better as before It’s was so much lag go on the Quality I have an I5 core and 8GB ram moving on to 16 ram and new SSD.🖥⚙️
Good job bud
Thanks Timm! :)
hey, what do u think about the M1 macs?
Hey, I haven’t used it for Second Life so I couldn’t give a fair viewpoint. I’ve heard mixed feedback from people. It’s best to check out the second life forums where people have reported directly.
Hey Boston, great video, let me just add a few things.
..
Thank you for the information. May I ask what screen recorder do you use? I would really appreciate that.
You're welcome! I use OBS Studio for screen recording.
@@BostonB Awesome! Okay, I recently download that...Thank you so much!! New sub!!
Thanks for the sub! I’ll be posting weekly content 👌
2nd Life runs fine for me on my new graphics card, but when I close the program I get coloured pixels all over the screen and some freezing and black flashing, until I reboot the PC a couple of times. Any ideas?
I have no idea what that is 🤷
@@BostonB You were my last hope
@@BostonB thanks for the response 👍
SL ignores any more resources over the minimum.
Alchemy Viewer give you 15-25% more performance with GPU :p
Sl Was doing my head in cos i have quite a powerful gaming laptop but textures were taking so long to show up sharp from being blurry all the time making shopping frustrating..tried firestorm and blackdragon viewer but still the same and dont like the ui on them..nearly gave up but then i tried the alchemy viewer and problem solved..can run on just under ultra with no lag and good frame rates and textures load real fast and look sharp..i like the way the ui is very similar to the standard sl viewer aswell..never had sl run so good..alchemy viewer is the way forward imo
What monitor that you are using it for SL
I'm using Samsung 4K UHD 28in Monitor. Here's my affiliate link to it: amzn.to/3ddNs3O
You can change Minimum Draw Distance much less than 32 in "Debug Settings" "RenderFarClip"
Thanks. But I wouldn’t recommend going lower than 32. It could start to have a detrimental impact to your overall experience if you’re moving around
@@BostonB Yes I only do that for some weird artistic effect.
Help me firestorm is not opening its says „Initializing texture cache“ and loading
I recommend that you join the Firestorm support group inworld and ask the question there. Maybe use the SL viewer to log in. I’m not a support technician so I don’t know why the issue is
@@BostonB okay ty

How do you stop people crashing you ? I've not played in years but that was one of the main reasons I left was the crashing and griefing, thanks
I’ve personally never experienced that. You can report people quite easily if that happens to you
It is honestly a shame that this vid has not got more likes but I guess SL is rather Niche
Thanks
Hi Richard, this video is a year old now. I'm currently researching information for an updated video to this one :)
Is there a fix for firestorm lag because i live in asia, and the pings are super ugly, i have fast wifi but because the server location is in US its causing me alot of trouble
Hey, sorry I’m not able to help you with that. I hope you figure it out
Pretty sure they still haven't started using cloud for the content?
All the interconnected services and databases have been fully migrated to Amazon’s cloud servers
If i get a high clock cpu and a mid range vid card, is there any value for sl in going to 32gb ram?
I'm currently researching information for an updated video to this one :)
How many alts with giant inventoriey are you planning to run? Otherwise: No
so what is a best gaming laptop to get for second life , gta and sims?
I don’t use laptops for gaming. I’ve never had much long-lasting luck with them
Sl eat very much of old graphic card x-x need to upgrad gpu .
👍
the cpu thing can not be stated enough.
This is a great point 👌
Hi, I have the same graphics card as you but no Second Life viewer recognizes it. Any tips to help me fix this? Thank you in advance.
Hey, you should raise a support ticket with Linden labs and provide more detail. I haven’t had any issues with my graphics card not being recognised.
Hey there, I'm currently researching information for an updated video to this one :)
SL doesn't uses that much resources only when you're in a club with around 60-90+ people. Mesh avatars are the ones use ton of resources. Even a full mesh sim doesn't uses as much as avatars.
What's a mid-level graphics card?
I guess it’s subjective depending on how much you want to spend
Hey there, I think you posted this in Reddit aswell so hopefully you’ve received the information that you’re looking for. Good luck!
Yeah it's a shame. Hopefully we'll continue to see better optimisation and improvements.
Weaker wifi can do that
which pc did you buy?
Mine was a custom build from Cyberpower UK (online)
Firestorm disabled the Advanced tab hot keys somehow.
Hmm I’m not sure, I’ll have to look into it
Sadly SL is designed to under use literally everything on the market.
True!!
Does it work if u have a Amd Radeon R5
Depends if you mean integrated onboard processing or a separate GPU. If it’s separate, it will perform slightly better than integrated.
@@BostonB no wonder tkn u

That’s awesome bro. Glad it helped. I’ll do an update video to this soon
im still having trouble lagging on my hp laptop
Laptops and SL aren’t very good friends 🤷
I have 128GB of ram and 12 Core Xeon CPU and it still looks like crap in here. Mac pro trashcan which works for even most of new games for me. But SL looks like edgy crap where half of textures are pixelated and this actually been like this for years.. no matter what PC i'd have in my life it was always the worst.. How can it be smooth like you show in this video.. this is impossible.. :(
I'm no expert but my spec works for me. Hope you can figure it out!
Could you list the creator and name of your hair? Thanks!
Hey, it’s called Jeremy by the brand Modulus :)
@@BostonB Thanks!
I wish they would take out the sex stuff in second life. I started playing second life when I was 14 and honestly it kinda fucked me up in that sense
Haha
Wait cloud then where we gonna find second life then
Second Life is still accessed in the same way by downloading the client. The change is that the regions and services have been moved from a physical datacenter to cloud (like many software providers are doing in some way). So amongst other things, this was aimed to improve overall performance.
