1:39 is a pretty minor misunderstanding of the mathematics behind electrons. Obviously they would not be able to teleport as this would violate basic energy conservation laws. The math dictates we can only either calculate their exact position or their exact speed(momentum) but not both at the same time, thereby we only see little data points of existence while trying to follow an electron. But fluctuating magnetic fields can actually alter the path of an ejected electron (beta particle) and we can track their exact path through space using tools such as a cloud chamber.

Special relativity explains magnetism - it's just a electrostatic force from a differenly moving point of reference. Of course that just moves your fundamental question to how electrostatic force pulls/pushes charges together. So to explain that you would have to explore feynmann diagrams of electrodynamic interactions. Basically charged particles toss photons at each other and those push and pull on throw and catch.

Given my understanding, an electron is a small magnet only when it is moving freely in the electron cloud of ferromagnetic substances. It also explains why elements get less ferromagnetic as the number of valence electron increases, as the electrons cannot move as freely.
Why is it a magnet only when moving?, is a question that arises. Well that's mostly caused by relativistic interaction between electric and magnetic field.

    ChatGPT 4.o mini answer:
Magnets are materials that produce a magnetic field, which can attract or repel certain materials, such as iron or steel. This magnetic field is created by the motion of charged particles, primarily electrons, within the atoms of the material. There are two types of magnets:
    1. Permanent magnets, which always produce a magnetic field (like a fridge magnet).
    2. Temporary magnets, which act like magnets only when exposed to a magnetic field (like iron nails in a magnetic field).
Magnets have two poles: the north pole and the south pole, and opposite poles attract each other, while like poles repel.
Magnets work based on the principles of electromagnetism, which is the interaction between electric charges and magnetic fields. Here's a more detailed explanation of how they work:
    1. Atomic Structure and Electron Movement:
At the atomic level, electrons move around the nucleus of an atom, and this movement creates tiny magnetic fields.
Electrons also spin on their axes, which further contributes to their magnetic properties.
    2. Magnetic Domains:
In materials like iron, cobalt, and nickel, groups of atoms align in a specific way, forming what are called magnetic domains.
Within each domain, the magnetic fields of individual atoms align in the same direction, creating a stronger collective magnetic field.
In an unmagnetized material, these domains are randomly oriented, so their magnetic fields cancel each other out. However, when the material becomes magnetized (e.g., by rubbing it with a magnet or placing it in a magnetic field), the domains align, making the material itself magnetic.
    3. Magnetic Poles:
A magnet always has two poles: a north pole and a south pole. The magnetic field lines flow from the north pole and curve around to the south pole.
When two magnets are brought close together, opposite poles attract each other, while like poles repel. This is because the magnetic field lines want to connect in the most efficient way, and like poles cause the field lines to push away from each other, while opposite poles attract.
    4. Electromagnetic Force:
Magnets are a manifestation of the electromagnetic force, one of the four fundamental forces in nature. This force operates between charged particles (like electrons) and is responsible for both electric and magnetic phenomena.
The interaction between moving electric charges (like electrons flowing through a wire) creates a magnetic field, which is the principle behind electromagnets. In an electromagnet, when an electric current flows through a coil of wire, it generates a magnetic field.
In summary, magnets work due to the alignment of atomic magnetic moments (from electron movement and spin), and the electromagnetic force governs the interaction between charged particles, which is why magnets attract or repel based on their poles.

There is a small mistake at 4:30. There are not just 2 Types of magnets. Yes, Antiferromagnets don’t have a net magnetic field, but they are ordered. Just the magnetic moment of atoms in adjacent planes are antiparrallel to each other. Then there are also Para/Dia-magnets that are not ordered without an external magnetic field and thus have no net magnetic field. Only ferromagnets have a net magnetic field without an external field.

So, together, more electrons with their tiny attraction have a stronger attraction that can reach further distances? What makes these little forces "team up" like this? How do they merge to cross literal planet-sized distances?? This is incredible magic.

This reminds me of the time I saw a strange concrete lump making its way up the stairs of the finnish parliment building and up into one of the pillars, scaring the other pillars away by turning into a man's face, which was crushed by a 100 dollar bill that was pocketed by a man in a suit, who then looks up in confusion before the camera zooms out revealing he's inside a coffee cup, which is drunk by a woman who then turns into a black doctor before exploding into marbles, which are swept away from the building, which then collapses due to lack of pillars.

If we ignore for a moment his UNFORGIVABLE pronunciation of atom, which had me completely messed up throughout, this was genuinely really insightful, I did not expect that. And yeah it's filled with jokes every other frame, but sometimes it's good to have that (it's not like he uploads regularly anyway).
Uhm, I would rather never have to sleep again, it's honestly one of the things I would do anything to achieve and I'm just sad every day that it's not possible (not yet?). Actually, if I didn't have to sleep I would be extremely motivated to work at 3AM, BUT I HAVE TO SLEEP DAMNIT. I know there are arguments around this, but bro it's not even close in my mind (it actually kind of is close, but nah sleep is a curse almost).

4:31 ok but why???? Why are some crystals just ferromagnetic by default???? Or is it a "we spawned in and it just was like that" again?

    • @JonasHamill
      @JonasHamill 4 месяца назад +3

Because it's the most stable orientation for that specific group of atoms. Either from how the material as a whole is formed or the construction of the atom itself.
Things will always move to the most stable versions of themselves, because unstable things will keep moving until they're stable. Think of a ball being dropped at the top of a hill. While at the top it's unstable, it will continue to roll down the hill and bounce off things until it reaches the base and will stop moving, more stable.

    • @thepirate6521
      @thepirate6521 4 месяца назад

I know this is simple explanation but it's worth to say that sometimes chemical kinetics will prevent things going to the most stable state @@JonasHamill

3 AM motivation FOR THE WIN

  • @aravindmuthu5748

    *A few points:
    1. Iron, Cobalt and Nickel and alloys of these metals are the only ferromagnetic elements in the universe(*ferromagnetic means one that has the ability to turn into a magnet).
    2. Everything else is termed as paramagnetic and diamagnetic. Paramagnetic materials are attracted to magnets but very faintly, could be observed using high power magnets.
    3. Diamagnetic materials are even fainter and are actually repelled by magnetic fields, like from any direction. for eg, water is diamagnetic
    4. The difference between paramagnetic and diamagnetic materials arise due to the orientation of the electrons in the valance shell, bla bla, wouldn't wanna get into details.
    5. Shout out to my man Maxwell. His 4 equations are powering the world right now...
