Tuning it down makes the strings easier to bend, which is probably the biggest reason he does that. Thanks for the lesson. Counting the beat would help - one two and three and four and.....
This sounds a lot better than the other tutorials I've heard, but it really helps me to have tab in front of me. Do you know of a correct tab you could point to?
This tutorial has really helped me. Thanks so much. Do you have the tabs for it? Other tabs I've seen are not what you're playing and yours are the best!
Thanks so much Bart! However I do not have tabs for it... I try to go through and explain how to achieve the proper sounds and movements point by point though in the tutorial, hope that helps!
During the opening sequence, it sounds like you’re plucking in a 7 note pattern with a break between the first 3 and last 4 but gave us a 5 note plucking pattern (DEGBD) but there is definition 2 more notes. I hope that makes sense, I’m not very knowledge with music terms and such
What do you mean exactly? I’m trying to learn it now but I can tell this guy is explaining one way, but then playing another. He’s plucking more than he’s saying to pluck and I’m lost now
He’s totally missing that open note but also plucking in a 7 note pattern with a break between the first 3 and last 4 but have a 5 note plucking pattern. Like Malachi said above^
I’ve been trying to figure out the 2 missing notes but I can’t. He’s definitely playing different than what he’s saying in addition to missing the 4th repetition with the open D string. I hope that made sense, I’m learning and not very knowledgeable with music
I think the picking pattern in the beginning might be missing a note in the explanation (2:30). Or it starts on the 6th string and not the 4th?? I don't know... :) It's an awesome song and great tutorial. :)
Hey Ross! You actually don't have to retune your guitar. If you play without a capo in standard tuning, it will be in the actual tuning I'm playing it in here for the lesson. Colter Wall plays tuned a full step down and then capoed on the 2nd fret (which puts it BACK into standard). There's not real reason to detune your guitar to play it if you dont want to. Colter keeps his guitar tuned down most likely suit the key he most typically wants to sing in.
Put the capo on the first fret on the guitar then tune it to standard tuning pull the capo off then boom your a half step down, if you want to go a full step down put the capo on the second fret tune the guitar to standard tuning then take it off then boom your a full step down, think of each fret is a half step, have fun playing my dude
Dude you have got to be precise with which strings to pluck. I’m stuck at about 6:00 trying to see the vibrations in one of the strings because you’re saying to play one way, but then you leave out a pluck or two that I can audibly notice is there, but you never said to play. I’ve been here for two hours trying to decipher which string you’re plucking. Other than that, awesome tutorial man! BTW at the beginning the picking pattern is 6-3-4-2-6-3-4 I don’t know what you said in the video but it definitely wasn’t that.
Not completely sure I understand what you are saying, but you can hear a bending note. Earlier on in the song he said to pluck the 2 and 3 string at the same time, and on the fret board you bend both of the strings down. This starts the part where he repeats the song, hopefully this helps some people.
Here's my best shot at the picking pattern of the intro. Hope it helps others. ‐--‐------------‐------------ ------------3---------------- ---0---------0-------------- ------3---------3------------ ----------------------------- -3------3--------------------
Hell yeah just learned this and your Devil Wears a Suit and Tie. Two of the most fun songs I can play now because of you, thank you.
Thanks for the comment man! Glad you found the lesson helpful!
This is the first song I picked up. Thank you Tim
Glad it helped!
amazing tutorial! haven't played any plucking in many years but this really got me back into it :D love the song too.
Thanks for the comment!
Tuning it down makes the strings easier to bend, which is probably the biggest reason he does that.
Thanks for the lesson. Counting the beat would help - one two and three and four and.....
Paul J it also makes guitar sound charismatically badass with this bluesy clang
the string spacing is wider for those of us with monkey hands
This Chanel deserves 100 000 at least
Could you do the devils wears a suit and tie by colter wall ? Really good song, thanks😁
If you are so inclined to do more Colter songs perhaps consider Transcendent Ramblin Railroad Blues. That would be awesome.
im gonna go get a capoo, thank you for introducing Colter Wall
Never learned fingerstyle. Now I can!
Glad you found the lesson helpful!
The big 4 of guitar lessons:
“Hey guys Marty Schwartz here!”
“This is Carl from guitar lessons 365”
“Howdy there pluckers”
And then we have Tim🖤
I truly appreciate the kind words.... thank you.
Great lesson...thank you. Your Collings is absolutely gorgeous.
This music is why I love guitar
It’s good stuff for sure!
This is awesome Tim! Any chance you could teach us Rocky Mountain Rangers next?
Not 100% sure but I think I got the picking down, it’s 6,3,4,2,6,3,4, I think u had showed us wrong at the beginning
He did, thank you
Yes he did, thank you so helpful. Couldn’t figure it out for the life of me
if anyone wants to try it a little different you can try 6,4,6,2,4,3 and then repeat.
You’re the best Tim
Happy to help!
Damn Tim - the tone of that guitar. I know it’s only one ingredient in the stew, but what strings do you use?
Hey Dave! My string of choice these days are Stringjoy Phosphor Bronze strings
This sounds a lot better than the other tutorials I've heard, but it really helps me to have tab in front of me. Do you know of a correct tab you could point to?
Sorry Keith, I don't... I never learned tabs so they hardly make any sense to me when I look at them.
If you cant wrap yoyr head around tab then im amazed you can wipe your own ass
@@JohnJohnsonIV Number one...How do you know he can wipe his own ass?? .
Number 2..You are an ass.
John Johnson “lmao funny”
Tim, could you teach this song using a flat pick?
Thanks Tim, love this song.
Same here... Colter Wall is a great songwriter

TIM TIM TIM,,, MORE COLTER PLEASE :)
I had intended to do most of his newest album when it came out, but I got distracted with other things for some reason
Tim would love more tutorials man! Would love to learn more from you, your one of the only channels on yt that have good colter tutorials
Could you do happy reunion by colter wall
Tack så jättemycket!
You’re welcome!
Nice job my man
Appreciate it!

Same thing with the second sequence with the pull on the B and G string. You’re not playing what you’re saying. Just fyi, I still appreciate your work
so good! thank you
I'm glad you liked it, thanks!
what software do you use to record please
Hey Julie, I just record live audio as I play into GarageBand and pair it with the video in iMovie
Alternating thumb with an open roll at the beginning??
Yes if I remember correctly
I feel like in the song when you're going down the scale with the g chord that it goes down once more to an open note.
I couldn't agree more with you, I feel like it was missing a note in the run through.
What do you mean exactly? I’m trying to learn it now but I can tell this guy is explaining one way, but then playing another. He’s plucking more than he’s saying to pluck and I’m lost now

Thank you Austin!
Very well done
Thanks so much Eric! I appreciate the positive feedback!
Thanks a lot for the help dude!!
Sure thing Bailey!
Can you do a sturgill Simpson song
one of my strings snapped when i was tuning it down lol

It's an awesome song and great tutorial. :)
Oh no Elizabeth! I'm sorry if I mixed something up in the explanation... were you able to figure out the feel of it anyway?
I think so, it’s the rhythm that’s giving me trouble. Its like Travis picking tempo? Thanks!
Very close to that yes!
Definitely playing an added note that wasn’t mentioned. Can’t figure it out
@@zacharyphillips3441 the intro is a tiny bit incorrect. it goes 6 4 6243
Is it half step or full step cuz I heard both???
Full
I can't figure out how to tune this way and it's so frustrating just wanna learn this.

I’m going insane watching 6:00 on replay to figure this out. He doesn’t practice what he preaches.

they way you play just doesnt sound quite right. especially in the intro.
