You are so right. I often have to watch them again because I’ve fallen asleep! Must be the lovely, gentle, soothing voice of the narrator. Great content!
Here in New York City listening my heart goes out to the family and prayers. I remember years ago the story about Melissa Benson murder, may she rest in peace.
Update: Donald Nash ended up killing again - a fellow prisoner named Roy Tucker in Oct. 1994. He fashioned a mace with a stick of wood with a bunch of side-by-side razor blades attached to one end, and used a metal pipe against Roy Tucker in addition to that. He sliced the Roys’ throat with the make-shift mace as the death blow. Also, the real names of the FBI witnesses in this story aren’t Melissa Benson and Debbie Wong. They are Margaret Barbera, and Jenny Soo Chin. I can’t find anything about her body being found yet, so I guess it’s yet to happen. Wikipedia says it’s never been found either. What a shame. Donald Nash died in 2006, at 70 years old, after serving 24 years in prison. My post is written on Feb 21, 2021.
I know right....that was such crap!!!! It he would have done his job and checked it out and called the cops this whole thing wouldn't have gone as far as it did.....I hope that he at the very least fired
@@jennifermckinley8477 the people that were murdered still would have been murdered. By not catching him right away they were able to round up more people linked to the crimes.
@@deannawiederhold333 dumb@$$ I mean Deanna what does something that had nothing to do with this case in anyway is associated with Obama? You might as well blame Trump too. Since he didn’t help make it better.
Oh my gosh, what a frustrating and extremely difficult case to figure out, let alone solve. Big time credit to all those detectives that worked hard to solve it. Just amazing.
@@libbad7419 I beg to differ . I Cite One major problem . Russian Collusion . They are FAR worse now and nothing more than a politically motivated criminal organization
Unfortunately FBI has informants and bad seeds all through it and have been well known to allow criminals to operate as long as they're getting their pockets lined. This should have been solved within a day or two.
What's amazing to me is "with the potential of spending life behind bars" someone would settle for $4,000 to kill someone. After paying rent or mortgage, a trip to WF and two bottles of vino that's all gone. That's what Debbie Wong's life was worth.
In 1982, my rent was $150/month. $4,000 back then was like having $20,000 now. But yeah, still crazy that someone would kill for that amount of money. So sad.
You're telling me the FBI or police never searched her apartment? What the heck, they knew there was a blue bag involved because she had told them she used one to steal the documents, it should have had flashing lights on it for them. All that work to tail the killer and they miss the most important thing in their case against Margolis. Then they let Benson simply walk around without any protection. I had to do a double-take when the agent in the briefing said "Nobody messes with our witnesses." Really? Incompetence plus. Otherwise a good detective story.
Yea the whole “nobody messes with our witnesses” is ridiculous…I’ve heard of so many stories of main witnesses in cases getting killed because they were offered no protection….and something tells me the police wouldn’t have worked so hard on the case if she wasn’t a main witness and the 3 murders never happened, because they had absolutely nothing when it came to Debbie Wongs disappearance.
I would of NEVER agreed to help the FBI in any investigation that I thought my life would be in danger without AGREED POLICE PROTECTION!!! This poor woman was a sitting duck.
Sadly even in many cases where protection is provided and witnesses are moved to undisclosed locations for their protection they make poor choices of judgement and reach out to people and talk to them, or go to places they are familiar with because of loneliness or whatever the case may be or just sheer ignorance thinking that they will be perfectly fine but in reality they just made the worst mistake they ever could have
Why wasn't their witness protection. That is exactly why people don't want to help, with any crimes. It just it not worth your life. Or they blame you. Or trash your own life!!!!
Where are guys like this when we need them ... to rid the USA of the fake media and far-left liberal twats that infest our televisions and social media sites (Facebook, Twitter, Google, etc.).
@@baldwinwallace4926 yes, you tell them! Let's get rid of the people who don't agree with the values of those with advantage! Heck yeah. Let's censor and silence them. Those 3 men who ran at the armed killer like that are truly absolute heroes. People who give their lives in order to save others occupy the station of, and are truly the epitome of courage, care, and all of the highest of human qualities. RIP to all four of those people who were killed by the pathetic murderer depicted in this unfortunate case.
WHy? Because they are dead? They walked over to see if the woman was okay, when they saw the gun they ran. If the three of them went for the gun they would have been heroes.
I recall this case very well it was a shocking, sensation. The names of the two women were Margaret Barbera and Jenny Soo Chin. I do not understand the need for this program to change the real names of the victims since it is a true crime story but for whatever reason the producers saw fit to do so. It was reported The US Attorney’s Office in Manhattan denied the application of Barbera for witness protection however they have denied any such request was ever submitted. At the time Barbera’s brother testified in Nash’s trial, he did state because his sister was fearful she was spending long visits with her brother in Pa on and off for several months before she went back to her apartment for good. Barbera pondered for several weeks if she should take a plea bargain for her role in the scheme and testify. Perhaps that is why protection was not available I do not know. She was murdered two weeks later after she testified before a closed federal hearing in Manhattan. I think it was shortly after she returned to NYC to spend more time at her apartment Chin went missing and by that time she was quite afraid and of course we know she was murdered short time later. Terrible crime.
Yes I was confused because when I googled Melissa Benson, I got no results until I furthered researched the case and realized they changed the names. I didn't understand the need for them to do that. nonetheless, such a sad story.
@@SintikaR I agree they should keep the names the same but were probably changed out of respect to the family as the documentary maker is financially gaining from this case, i assume thats the reason for the name change?
Is it FBI Files tho? I know it's the same narrator and theme music but why does it say "Material Witness" rather than FBI Files, and it's much longer than an hour too?
That security guard that was so busy reading his news paper when someone was frantically trying to get his attention. I hope he got fired?? What a fool! That just pissed me off.
That’s was such a horrific crime. Five people dead and still they didn’t get the death penalty. Why waste taxpayers money keeping these thugs in prison?
the blithering incompetence and stupidity of the fbi caused all of this from the start , they had a case started for the fraud and they took absolutely no precaution for the witnesses . even when the first girl disappeared they just allowed the second one to remain at risk until the slaughter in the parking lot and even then they were oblivious until the local police brought it to these moron fbi attention
That's some of the most cold-blooded, calculating murdering I think I've ever seen. I wonder, if it hadn't been for the murder of the three CBS employees, would things have moved as quickly as they did. I'm no Monday morning quater-back, but I also try to keep in mind that all of this went down at the dawn of the Digital Era. What I can't begin to fathom is the lack of protection for this woman, even after her friend and co-worker disappeared right after she last saw her. The only word that keeps coming to mind is - OBTUSE.
"We couldn't arrest him unless we knew it was the van for sure" Me: Uh.... what about that other guy you detained just for having a similar vehicle who you only released when you contacted his alibi? They had more than enough information for probable cause. Two book keepers killed from the same diamond firm in which the FBI was already investigating for fraud. When the diamond firm made the claim that their diamonds were stolen. Good! They're literally giving them an in to do an investigation. Nash using his name to register a brief stay at the same place where the crime took place. They had motive right out of the gate and they did nothing with it. They didn't ask the proper questions. I get that the information we get is more spoon fed for us to be made more dramatic, but the way this was written just made them look incompetent. Realistically they did solve the case quite quickly, that was not conveyed in this story at all. FBI should not be patting themselves on the back though, Bensen's death and the deaths of those 3 men would not have happened had they put her under proper protection.
Times were diff then kid. If u listened...this happened in the 80s. Now they stop u for nothing. Have to. Too many evil people around now with free bail and a crime wave going on with communist dems in office.
Something said recently by a recent murder investigator ... All murdered people want their murderers caught .& they are working to gain justice even from the other side .now that should be s deterrent ,wouldn't you think ?
What strikes me about the search for this woman is that the focus was on the fact that she was witnessed not that they wanted to save her life because her life had value.
What makes you think that human life has any objective value? Prostitutes and homeless people are attacked and killed all the time, and the police dont care. A celebrity even "feels" threatened and look at all the armed guards they're suddenly given. Human life was never valuable - we just got good at pretending that we believe.
I just looked up the case. Magolis died a few years later in prison, Nash killed another inmate while behind bars and died on June 2, 2016 at the ripe old age of 80 in New York’s Green Haven prison facility. Updated Correction: Nash died in 2006 at the age of 70.
Yes, I also read that. Kind of makes you wonder what kind of justice the 5 people he killed, and who knows how many more, received when he lived to be 80.
the narrator had a problem of narrating the story properly. like she had been dead for less than 24 hours instead she was just missing for 24 hours for she was not yet found at that time. lol
Love how they're mad bc one of their witnesses were killed.... Not that she's just a human being but bc she's important to the investigation! "You don't kill our witnesses".... really?!! Possibly your fault bc you didn't protect the poor women?!!!
Well, the witnesses are more important than you think, because without them many crimes wouldn't be solved. So, yes, they were worried about their witness, as they should be.
I feel bad for Debbie Wong more than anyone in this case because she had nothing to do with this and got dragged into this by Melissa , I really feel for Debbie's husband , thats tragic af.
hold up , are you guys blaming the victims ? she got the papers cause they were most likely gonna kill her either way cause the two girls are the only ones who can incriminate them , and had access to the actual evidence. without them , it would have been hard to incriminate the company , so logically they were gonna die regardless .
Dude, the key hole in the driver’s side door of my beat up old pickup gets stuck all the time and every time, every single time, even in broad daylight, I have a tiny panic attack.
54:00 The VIN is in a few locations on every vehicle, especially older vehicles like this 1980's van. The FBI agents just didn't know where to look. In addition to the dash it is also stamped on the front of the engine block and the frame usually on the driver side near the driver door. The agent could have probably found the VIN by laying under the van to look at the engine block or frame. In this case the inside of the frame on the driver side would have been the easier location to read.
The narrator also said Nash had been parking at the garage for a few months and later said he signed a parking lease ion April 1st and the crime was committed April 12th. That's 12 days, not several months.

“We couldn’t help her after she was killed...the best thing we could do for her was to find her killer”. What an IDIOTIC statement to make!! You could’ve helped her BEFORE she was killed by putting her into witness protection!!
Exactly I don’t understand cops are supposed to protect and serve and she definitely needed there protection and they failed her and her family and because of their neglect she is dead .
@@danigirl2597, I could only imagine how painful that single statement, alone must’ve been for her family to hear! I would be both heartbroken & livid at the same time, if I had a family member murdered in this context. I probably would consider suing for negligence...they KNEW the position she was in & they failed to do their job to protect her.
I’m getting Forensic Files feels from this. The narrator has a Peter tone to it and I love it. I would love this man to have narrated the Forensic Files II. The new Forensic Files isn’t as good as Peter and unfortunately he passed away a couple years ago. I love how this story was edited and narrated. Perfect casting of the narrator. It really brings me to the edge of my seat, and leaves me with goosebumps. Truly well told. Edit I’m wondering if it is the same narrator... it sounds like him and then it doesn’t. If it’s not him, I really think he should narrate the new Forensic Files if he is still alive.
I agree with you that the narrator of the new Forensic File ( I believe is named The New Detectives ) is very bad. His voice is so very low and so monotonous that not only it's hard to hear but also put me to sleep.
Heartbreaking story. Thank God for all the police and investigators for working relentlessly on this case. What I don't understand, is why Melissa Benson wasn't put into some protection program. If the FBI had taken the steps to protect her, 4 lives could have been saved. Her friend and the 3 CBS workers lost their lives for no reason! As I said earlier so heartbreaking.
I'm so sorry that we get to learn something from other people's tragedy 😔, anytime I'm entering a vehicle or even a home or office and my keys appear useless , this incident would help me to think differently in the situation.
are you joking ? you see some idiotic story of fbi agents getting witnesses killed by not protecting them in a serious diamond swindle case , so now you're going to go thru life in an idiotic delusion the boogie man is out to get you ? you grow up and stop being like some silly child and realize there are real dangers out there , not the least of which is you own evil government releasing deadly pathogens to make their big pharma buddies rich giving you vaccines , thats not when they're busy allowing the other end of the chemical corporations to poison you with carcinogens so they can make more money selling you fake cancer drugs . you worry about that

Yup. Also there are a lot of shows where the narrator says “now they had to find proof” that a person was the culprit. I bet a lot of people have been railroaded that way.
you get it , sort of ...but its not really errors , they do it on purpose to stir up the shi# and make more trouble to make a small case into a big murder so they can look like big heros when they catch the guy , that they knew who it was all along from the wire taps they had when the witness murders were first planned
@@bobsaturday4273 they are called police procedurals. They are intended to build respect and obedience but show mistakes, laziness, and often corruption.. you don’t get it.
According to my calculations Nash had killed 9 people & that was just while police were looking for him or recently locked him up .the 3 mafia people eating in the restaurant. The 3 C.B.S. workers trying to help out the woman they saw him throw in the back of the van . & most likely Debbie Wong . and the prisoner he killed those were just the tip of the iceberg ,I am sure . being a long time killer, God only knows how many people died at his hands . thats proof that the death penalty is a deterrent . you can't kill any more people if you gave been killed your self .
I know the story are horribly sad for the victims but I just can't help loving the voice of the narrator. It's so soothing contratry to the horrific crimes he was telling which make it less disturbing and scary to me that it actually is while listening to this alone.
The initial witness could have blocked the entrance to the parking lot with his car, shut it off, and gone and called police. End of story. Nash was evil, a cheap hit man, and incredibly stupid.
Remember before the internet when they took a two minute story and turned it into and hour and a half documentary by repeating the same things over and over again in slightly different ways?
Remember before internet when people were not too stupid to understand that these are just docu's taken from television and that these recaps are done before/after commercial breaks

A few years ago a mental health technician got fired from the local state mental hospital. A guy recognized he was having a psychotic break and was about to have a seizure and told the tach he needed his emergency medication. That's right. They are used as pawns to further the careers of the agents forget their safety. I met one. She was almost mindless but you could catch enough of her coherent sentences to know she was waiting for her rescue.
Just shows how incompetent some of the FBI agents and offices can be. Melissa was their material witness; had they been more professional in their jobs, Nash could have been caught for the murder of Ms. Wong and four murders could have easily been prevented. It's much easier to find out if a vehicle has been recently painted; surprising that a helicopter could figure it out from high above but these FBI agents, who were close to the van all night long when Nash was in his motel room, could not.
It was probably made for TV. When they break for ads then resume, they summarize what happened before the ads. I'm pretty sure that's the reason for the repetitions. I wish they'd edited them out for RUclips.

Avoidable? How? The only way it could have been avoided was if she hadn't participated in fraud, or her boss hadn't hired a contract killer.

They had more than enough information for probable cause. Two book keepers killed from the same diamond firm in which the FBI was already investigating for fraud. When the diamond firm made the claim that their diamonds were stolen. Good! They're literally giving them an in to do an investigation. They had motive right out of the gate and they did nothing with it. They didn't ask the proper questions.

Maybe he was able to park a while without signing said lease? Maybe short term parking at first? 🤷🏽♀️

⁹⁹⁹⁹⁹⁹
⁹
Edit
I’m wondering if it is the same narrator... it sounds like him and then it doesn’t. If it’s not him, I really think he should narrate the new Forensic Files if he is still alive.
@Amelia R. Wilder : I’m guessing it’s narrated by Anthony Call, the narrator of “ FBI Files” and “ A Haunting”.
I agree with you that the narrator of the new Forensic File ( I believe is named The New Detectives ) is very bad. His voice is so very low and so monotonous that not only it's hard to hear but also put me to sleep.
@Deko Dekic Could be the same producer. Great shows👍🏼
Heartbreaking story.
The FBI are responsible for all the murders. She told them her co-worker has being kidnapped and what did they do ? Nothing !

Not to mention the fellow prisoner that Nash killed while in prison ? Couldn't someone have just given him what he gave in killing all those people
According to my calculations Nash had killed 9 people & that was just while police were looking for him or recently locked him up .the 3 mafia people eating in the restaurant.

Not to laugh but I’m sure the Parking attendant got fired over that news paper he really ignored the man smh
I sure hope he did.
you get what you pay for
A few years ago a mental health technician got fired from the local state mental hospital. A guy recognized he was having a psychotic break and was about to have a seizure and told the tach he needed his emergency medication. The tech said she was on her break and he needed to come back in ten minutes.
Tl;dr version: he had a massive seizure and his brain was deprived of oxygen and he ended up brain dead. After a couple weeks of not being able to find a next of kin, they pulled the plug.
If you want to know what a state run mental hospital is like, it’s a bit like the DMV, only a lot more depressing. It’s just one reason billionaires like Bezos and Gates and Musk need to pay more taxes.
The Parking attendant should never ever get another job like that . He needs to work on an assembly line for the rest of his life . Maybe , just maybe he will pay more close attention.
Doubt it. He was probably union and impossible to fire.
Rest in peace what a tragedy I can't imagine the fear of being abducted or kidnapped and wondering what is going to happen to you. Terrifying.

Strange story, not a lot of bright crayons in this group or sharp pencils, etc. Sad that 5 people died for what, pure GREED! 1982, I had just moved to Indiana in 1979, never heard about this incident. It AMAZES me that given Nashs POOR vision he was a PERFECT assassin
The FBI agent said; "Nobody messes with our witnesses " uh...Both of them were killed!!!
Oh my God
😩
Think he meant "Nobody messes with our witness without paying a price, being caught, etc."

Its unfortunately common for witnesses to just vanish, this isn’t tv or a movie, especially these days, its so easy to find anyone, even if in hiding.
Parking garage attendant heard exactly what he said the first time lolz!
Yes and he should be fired. Useless guy.
Ditto
it's a good thing youtube put this on.i've only seen it 457 times and was starting to forget the storyline.
😶
While intriguing, they certainly stretched this documentary out to fill all 93 minutes didn't they? I don't think this information really required a full, feature-length film... but I certainly appreciate the effort that was put in. Thanks for sharing, RS!
Lol I thought the same after watching the whole 93 mins 😅
@@MoNeeTah_Simone Since this is the only action this post has seen in over a year, I'm gonna take it upon myself to change the subject. I have watched the FBI files season 1 thru 7. It's so crazy that to many times the witness is never protected. They be playing with people lives
this is not FBI files but ur right about the witnesses
This is the FBI files
Crazy he said, "You don't mess with our witnesses...Not and get away with it." It must be about job security, right? I mean, why else let them get murdered.
That's right. They are used as pawns to further the careers of the agents forget their safety. I met one. She was almost mindless but you could catch enough of her coherent sentences to know she was waiting for her rescue.
@ray Engels don’t you hear the song it is FBI Files.. I’m a fbi file junkie and the id channel
I had even forgot n didn't know if wasn't a different case jeeez
Nope.. Since there were No Melissa the show get BOTH the female victims wrong.
Google Donald Nash. It was Jenny Soo Chin and Margaret Barbera
@@darth_yoda It says some names have been changed in this episode. They got the name "Wong," not wrong.
FBI officers aren't above bribes.
Parking attendent heard they had three doughnuts! No need to be bothered until the escape is made.
Perhaps they were involved???
Honestly this story could've been a lot shorter if they didn't keep repeating things already revealed
It was probably made for TV. When they break for ads then resume, they summarize what happened before the ads. I'm pretty sure that's the reason for the repetitions. I wish they'd edited them out for RUclips.
Click the bar and pull to the ending 😅. I watch this to kill time while sitting here inside my store😊

They are going to fill up the episode no matter how many repeated phrases are needed....
They do it just in case you came late to the show. Back in the days only way you catch a show was either from the beginning or record thru VCR tapes
I like the Narrator's voice. Almost as good as Peter Thomas, RIP.
It's Tony Call. He's the narrator of A Haunting (on Destination America). I have the box set and I cannot fall asleep without it because the narrator is so top notch 😅😭😂
I've been watching shows he's narrated since I was 4 or 5 and I'm knocking 30 now. My dad's the same way, gotta have some Tony Call to night night 😅😂

IDK when this actually happened but it blows me away what seems like 'rookie mistakes' that such a high profile killer made. This is taken from the perspective of modern law enforcement's advanced techniques in crime fighting. What a great story & thanks

It was because they had cop's and FBI in their pockets and most of the cop's were all dirty and worked with the Westies, Whitey Bulger, & Nash.

What an avoidable tragic mess from start to finish
Avoidable? How? The only way it could have been avoided was if she hadn't participated in fraud, or her boss hadn't hired a contract killer. I hope you're not suggesting that the police could have stopped it. She kept important information away from the FBI about her friend when the friend went m missing. She told them her friend knew nothing about the fraud, so they couldn't see a connection. She didn't reveal to them that she had left the incriminating documents with her friend, and her friend returned them. Had the FBI known that, their reaction would have been different. Criminals think differently than non-criminals.

why was this episode longer than 45 minutes?
Because the producer said so.
This whole situation is so sad. The man hired a hit man to kill the 2 woman who witnessed his crime but he was still convicted anyways and then the 3 innocent CBS men got killed as well for walking out of work at the wrong time. So 5 murders but the worst hit man out here for no reason.
