The best part about the water merchants option? While it extends the timer before the vault runs out of water, it drastically reduces the time before the supermutants conquer it, since, you know, you went around giving the vault's location!
The only bad thing I can say of Searchlight is that it's just out of the way enough that a lot of players, mostly first time players, completely miss it Lord knows I did at first
I agree the Necropolis should’ve been more fleshed out, but Set is one of my favorite characters from the first game. Even though he’s a relatively minor character, he’s got such a unique way of speaking with that weird dialect that’s like a mix of greaser slang and biblical sermonizing. With their limitation of only having 20- ish talking heads they were able to make each one of them distinct in their own way.
There are copies of Fallout 1 where the timer is a dud and it’s impossible to fail no matter how much in-game time has passed. Personally i loved the idea of that timer as it adds to the immersion/tension and need to explore and get stronger. Anyone who complained about the timer is a fool since there’s ample time to complete the mission
Yes that quest with the ghoul kid in 4 pissed me off too because it was Bethesda shitting on the established lore just for a small joke. Also V.A.T.S is what Bethesda called the targeting system, in classic Fallout it has no name it's just the targeting mode and there is a manual it's in the game directory but who checks the directory for a game manual. I know its cliché but they don't make games like this anymore. The choice, the writing, the dark humor, the factions, I love the Followers too for the same reasons, and the world just grips me every time I play. You can even complete the game in 20 mins if you go straight to Mariposa.
I see this game as importance, yet difficulty of human nuance in a jaded world I also love how in the end, the oversee is so jaded and afraid to the world that he would rather live in a dark underground hole than see anything change. But we do get that sense that he’s wrong and we can change things, but he can’t see that
I am pretty sure you know this but the overseer actually hides a dark secret. The vaults are used for experiments and vault 13 is used to test people who were not exposed to the outside. The overseer hides this fact and hence want to kick out our hero(who failed experiment by going outside).
imo, there isn't a moral choice to be made at Necropolis. Unless you're doing it for roleplay reasons, there's no reason -not- to fix the pump if you're able to. I don't think it's supposed to be a choice, more a way to demonstrate to new players that actions can have unforeseen consequences. If you're not thinking about the effect taking the chip will have, you're dooming this community. I really like it, because it makes Fallout really immersive. It's like learning about mutant sterility, or hiring the water caravans. In later games, your quest tracker would update on screen, letting you know you just discovered some key information, but in OG you get no help from the DM. When you finally realise that the decision you made ~6 hours ago is having a real effect on your game, it's amazing. I think it does an amazing job of making the game feel much more complex and reactive than it is. It's kind of a flaw of the later games, especially with how dialogue options are clearly labelled. Anything with [Speech] as a pre-fix you can safely guess is a preferable outcome, which is a shame because you chase the skill checks rather than role play, but idk if there's even a perfect solution.
25:16 I do wish Bethesda kept the original game’s look of what a Ghoul was. I get that these are people who’s flesh has rotted away so not every one would look like a skull but so many still have lips and both eyes. I get that this makes it easier to rig and animate but it’s telling Harold is the most distinct Ghoul you meet in fallout 3 (I know in lore he’s more of a mutant given he was in the same facility that changed The Master)
I'm glad you brought up the old custom of game manuals. The thick and beautifully written "Vault Dweller's Survival Guide" -manual of the original box remains one of my prize possessions. It is such a fun read that perfectly sets the tone of the game before you even start it. Thankfully it's part of the Steam package, and the Internet Archive has also preserved it in digital form for those unfortunate enough to never see the real thing.

Something that was lost in translation as the game become a digital download. Also, the resolution for the games was like 3x, or 4x smaller than what you're playing at.
Fallout 1 came out 1997 october 10th, i was born 1997 august 22nd. I can’t believe i spent 49 days on this planet without fallout existing. What a great video game series, love the video!
Pretty good video. Great look at Fallout. Really love those games and love seeing them brought decades into the present. realy hard to get into the movement, combat, and UI, but the voice acting... just, yes. The music. The setting. The writing. Such great games.
Regarding your point about the game not properly tutorializing the UI, I agree with you, but the developers probably thought about this as well and implemented a "Quick Help" Window when you press the F1 key, which is supposed to explain the UI to you. However, this is also very unintuitive, since players can't be expected to mash every button out of curiosity. I just thought it's something worth mentioning. Anyway, great video!
@@LasherTimora Right? It's like complaining about having to use a memory card instead of system memory on a PS1. My dudes, that was the standard at the time that was established. UI has evolved, but one shouldn't judge UI anachronistically.
The problem with F1's time limit is that if you don't know how lenient it is, it can be a huge turn-off. I know this because it was for me, when I initially got the game and realized there's a time limit, I got stressed with the game and felt like if I spent too much time exploring side content and not enough rushing through the main quest, I'd fail and have to start over. That illusion was reinforced further because it's an "old game" and all I knew about "old games" is that they're unforgiving and unconventional. I know that's not the case for everyone, but without knowing that the time limit may as well not be there, it made me too anxious to take in the world and really enjoy the game.

Fallout was originally played in 640x480. That's why pathfinding doesn't work in high resolutions. You're not meant to see that much of the world all at once. I recommend playing it in 960x540 with the x2 scaler. These things have been fixed. You can have infinite pathfinding complexity now. It's called the "High Res Patch". Among many mods that improve the experience. You're playing it wrong! Kappa LOL
Recycled i don't usually like to take mods into account when i judge a game. If I did that, i could make the argument that skyrim is a masterpiece (it's not) because mods fix all of its issues. Thanks for letting me know though. My next playthrough will definitely have those installed
Thank you for this video. It was really helpful to hear other person's perspective on UI/UX issues, since it's kinda hard to put it in the form of words, despite the fact I do feel there's something wrong with it.
MARVELOUS analysis. You go system by system evaluating each mechanic and examining whether they work or not, and why. Hardly any stone was left unturned or any avenue unexplored. With far too many analyses and retrospectives, you get the feeling that going through the story beat by beat is an end in itself. In this analysis, it's how it should be: a vehicle for the purpose of *discussing* the game's writing, sound design, themes, mechanics. Great job! Can't wait to watch your Fallout 2 video and your most recent Cyberpunk video!
Thanks for the wonderful trip down memory lane. Fancy experiencing the Necropolis theme in Nipton first, rather than the other way round, though. God I'm old
The first Fallout is unique. It’s like the first Star Wars in 1977. A magic spark of creativity, hard work and luck. Mixed and match so many ideas from so many varied pieces of media, bits of real world history and original ideas that there’s nothing else like it before or since, it stands out even against its own sequels. Often mimicked, never recreated.
It certainly is very special. The world is just so well done, immersive and memorable....paired with that soundtrack it's a timeless classic. Tim Cain new what he was doing.
i feel like i was going crazy with how many people say this game hasn't aged well visually. the burst fire death animation...it is one of the most beautiful things i've ever seen
33:40 very clever and my favorite part of the video. You don't even have to agree with the daily wire members beliefs to understand that they are factual. Great video and continue making videos on fallout full conversation mods. Also look for any on fallout tactics. I know fallout 3 have very little and so might fallout tactics but if it doesn't have any then continue what you are doing. You are one of my new favorite channels.
I personally never really had an issue with the combat and stuff I got used to it very early actually, but I know it turns a lot of people off from the game, which sucks because Fallout 1 and 2 are amazing! Good video btw!
This game was a big part of my later childhood. When 3 came out as a teen and the new generation was exposed to the watered down version of this once-amazing series, I knew it would only go downhill from there (with New Vegas being the anomaly). It's a shame how far the series came from the Master rationalizing his madness to the leader of the Enclave being persuaded to blow himself in a single sentence. Anyway, you tasted the nectar of what really made it great. If you don't want your dreams crushed of what the series could have turned into, don't read the fantastic design documents for Van Buren. Great video. It always reminds me how dumbed down overall games have become.
8:50 , of the top of my dome: Camp Searchlight is the place with the irradiated NCR troopers that's right next to Cottonwood Cove, the Legion place where you take the boat to the Fort from, right ? Double-checking now after writing this: Got it !
my only problem with Fallout 1 was time limit. Not that one with the Water Chip, but the one where mutants invade all cities withing a certain period of time. It was very stupid cause the game never even hinted that i should just drop my map exploration and rush to wipe out 2 (!!) locations in order to get good endings for major locations. It pissed me off very much. But all in all the game is brilliant.
With regards to the movement, I'm going to guess that's because the screen is bigger with how you are playing it versus how it was originally. You can see more of the map at once. It's weird seeing it played on modern computers. Also, before it got patched, the time limit was much tighter. Whilst the intro was awkward, I liked it. I expect to be exiled from the vault for this.
High charisma pays back slow, you may have a gang of warriors as the game goes on, CH/2 is the max followers you can have. Equip them with weapon. AND SUFFER GREATLY WHEN YOU WANT TO GO OUT A DOOR AND IDIOTIC IAN IS STANDING THERE!
Brilliant video essay! I had problems getting into the game too. But after getting used to the gameplay and visuals, that feeling while playing a game, totaly emmersed into this dark world is something you won't experience again. In my opinion f1 & 2 are superior in every way (except that clunky storage system🤦♂️). Thanks again for the video, appreciate the passion, time and effort put into it.
I'm super happy you enjoyed it! There are some aspects I think new vegas did better (companions, factions, etc) but overall i think you're right. The atmosphete and grit of the classics is something none of the other games come close to.
Damn man, that was a really great vid to watch, and listen to. As a newcomer I still haven't been able to get through both F1 and F2. I do know the story, but would really love to experience it on my own. Slowly getting there though with easier titles like Baldur's Gate :D! Either way, great video, can't wait for another! Makes me want to give the game another go
The pre-made characters are just fine. I have beaten the game with all three of them pretty easily, albeit at that point I already knew what I was doing and what had to be done. P.S. at 14:07, that's not Set. Set is up top at the Town Hall which are the ruins of an old church.
I remember playing Fallout 1 and 2 when I was like 9 years old... I just got off the high of Diablo 2 and thought they'd be action games akin to it. Wasn't a fan of the turn based mechanics, but the writing and story were too good to put down, even for my 9 year old brain. Fallout 1 is an absolute gem, for sure. Depth > breadth
I checked you out because DJPC plugged you, and you're top-tier man. Love this game, and your analysis is brilliant! This game's essense is what every game after, non-linearly, has been increasingly unable to emulate. Idk if this still works, but PewDiePie, ASMR, FortNite, Minecraft, etc
If you use the number keys to activate the corresponding skills, it's a lot quicker and not tedious at all. Living in post soviet eastern europe, we had no actual legit copies of games, so game manuals were not a thing, yet we managed to figure all this out :P
Umm, there actually is an option to increase the distance you will path, so you don't need to make a trail of a bunch if short distance clicks to get to the other side of an area. It should be in the pre-launch menu's options screen.
the impenetrable mountain to climb when playing fallout 1 ( or 2, because the problem is solved after playing either one) is to read the manual. that is something you were supposed to do back in the days. i was informed that the attention span of ( lets just keep it easy and say) your generation is that of a fly ( and i mean one of those flies that dies within one day) and you will never be able to pull such a stunt off as to read a manual. you expect that the game takes you on its hand and then guides you through itself. the games you know, they bend down in front of you, then spread their ass cheeks as much as they can so you can put your shaft in the crack and let it gently slide it in. fallout is not one of these games that bended in front of its own audience. also, fallout is not supposed to be beaten on first try and if you did beat it on first try you are a liar =b its your loss, if you cant read. not the games.
dude we literally had the exact same trajectory with the series which is funny. The lead up to fallout 4 I waa addicted to fallout content and was reading about the games everyday, and then was burned hard when fallout 4 wasn't what I really wanted. It burned me out so bad that I actually stopped playing video games all together from 2016-2019. Its really not a terrible game but I rhink how much I hyped it and being a teenager who was changing a lot led me towards other interests then video games for a while. But Im back now and as addicted as I was as a kid lol
You don't need to click and drag down to skills to use skills on items.. If you don't know the keyboard shortcuts then you can just use the skilldex button in the bottom right corner
The best (and worst) thing we got with time is a more or less standard ui. OG Fallouts could really benefit from better UI. But at the same time it would lose some charm if it was just standard modern ui, imho. Themed buttons and text boxes just look too cool to trade them for flat labeled rectangles.
No joke, I had the exact same experience with the old Fallout games. Played all of them, got 1 and 2 during a steam sale, gave up. Except I never make Charisma builds. I returned a year later and really enjoyed the second game
All 3 locations you listed as filler locations are all pretty prevelent in my memory but maybe I've played these games to much... Quincy is taken over by the Gunner woth a cowboy hat. Evergreen Mills is a giant raider camp with the behemoth in a cage. Searchlight is pretty much ghoul central in NV and has the green tint when you are in that area.
12:06 This point is actually debatable. In fact, it hasn’t been since 2 with Coffin Willie who was buried alive, the same with Woody who was in a period of deep sleep for weeks without food or water. Same goes for New Vegas with the Little Yangtze ghouls who had no sources of food nor water yet have survived to the present.
I sucked so bad at the combat in these classic fallouts that it prevented me from fully experiencing their fantastic stories. I hope they get a remake with a detailed explanation of mechanics, stats & combat. I think Pillars of Eternity & Divinity Original Sin have set a good standard for how this can be achieved.
38:10 You made a mistake here, that action is not because of The Bloody Mess Perk, that happens automaticly of through out The game you have done enough Bad Karma Things, Then your Character is "Bad" and he does that, If You Have done Good Karma things, Then this not happens, and you can Still do that, by atacking him your self
You can adjust it based on your liking. I have it in 1920x1080 because that's my monitor size and that's how i like it, but it can be scaled down to original if you like
@@ramblelime Thanks! I can see the appeal of seeing more of the screen at once, but a more zoomed-in camera makes the locations feel more real to me, maybe because it makes the repeating tiles less obvious
I hate that it's so hard for me to get into games beyond a certain era due to how archaic they are. I grew up in the early 2000s, so anything from the PS1 & Nintendo 64 era is about where my limit is. Anything beyond that is too alien to me. After tracing my first video game back to possibly the SEGA Genesis, I've been making more of an effort to rectify that.

I personally never really had an issue with the combat and stuff I got used to it very early actually, but I know it turns a lot of people off from the game, which sucks because Fallout 1 and 2 are amazing! Good video btw!
i like this 40 minte videos' about people taking about what they love i wish i had the hardware to do and post good video keep the good work man
Great video kid. Makes me really happy to see someone so young totally “get” these old ass games. Awesome job
My favorite Fallout game! Followed by New Vegas, then 2.
Van Buren has cool ideas but New Vegas Was Ultimately a better greater product
algorithm - but also good video!! You make me want to give these another try since I couldn't get into them either
8:50 , of the top of my dome: Camp Searchlight is the place with the irradiated NCR troopers that's right next to Cottonwood Cove, the Legion place where you take the boat to the Fort from, right ? Double-checking now after writing this: Got it !
Fallout 1 and 2 are some of the best RPGs you can play on the PC.
Charisma is far from useless. It determines the number of companions you can have from 0 to 5.
this is only true for fallout 2
Man, I hope I could write analysis like this one
You can!!! I believe in you!!! If i can, anyone can :D
@@ramblelime that means a lot for me, bro
wow lol the three "what do you remember about" locations are my favorite shooting galleries in those games
yeah those examples sucked idk what I was thinking LOL
I still wanna Fallout 2 remake with f4 graphics
Yeah.
The first two games really something special
Reading the manual that comes with the game before playing is a must. Its not bad either. Its written well.
my only problem with Fallout 1 was time limit.
Ah, what a great game. Very well done video!
Fun fact: if you mash 'enter combat' at the end, then you can get the Jacoren kill scene without bloody mess.
Subbed straight after I saw this and the Pathologic video!
Makes me want to give the game another go
But Baldur's Gate is much much harder than Fallout?!
6:17 Jacoren jumpscare
You killed Gizmo because he was a fat cat charicature.
I killed Gizmo because MacGyver asked me to.
We are not the same.
Glad this had parts, so I could easily skip that into
I checked you out because DJPC plugged you, and you're top-tier man. Love this game, and your analysis is brilliant! This game's essense is what every game after, non-linearly, has been increasingly unable to emulate.
Idk if this still works, but
PewDiePie, ASMR, FortNite, Minecraft, etc
Havent heard of DJPC, will check him out
@@therandomdickhead5744 DJ Peach Cobbler, dude is hilarious
16:58 BTW, Fallout has aimed shots. Bethesda created V.A.T.S. in Fallout 3 to appeal to fans of the turn-based combat.
And the thematic
Power of consistency
Great intro and a big light for modern fallout players that are getting into the classics :7
Beto Massagardi thank you!!!! More on the way
If you use the number keys to activate the corresponding skills, it's a lot quicker and not tedious at all.
It should be in the pre-launch menu's options screen.
the impenetrable mountain to climb when playing fallout 1 ( or 2, because the problem is solved after playing either one) is to read the manual. that is something you were supposed to do back in the days.
i was informed that the attention span of ( lets just keep it easy and say) your generation is that of a fly ( and i mean one of those flies that dies within one day) and you will never be able to pull such a stunt off as to read a manual.
you expect that the game takes you on its hand and then guides you through itself. the games you know, they bend down in front of you, then spread their ass cheeks as much as they can so you can put your shaft in the crack and let it gently slide it in.
fallout is not one of these games that bended in front of its own audience. also, fallout is not supposed to be beaten on first try and if you did beat it on first try you are a liar =b
its your loss, if you cant read. not the games.
dude we literally had the exact same trajectory with the series which is funny.
Just finished again the game yesterday. It is so good
Good video, but I'm sure its been mentioned but that's not Set at 14:08.
The thumbnail is like the walking dead "don't dead open inside" door but honestly either way it works
You don't need to click and drag down to skills to use skills on items.. If you don't know the keyboard shortcuts then you can just use the skilldex button in the bottom right corner
8:49 Radiation, Super mutant Behemoth in that cage, Gunners
Came here from DJ Peach Cobbler’s recommendation (even though he compared you to Ben Shapiro lol). Excellent video, looking forward to more
People were also spoon-fed information back then, it was just done via manuals.
I find it so disingenous how everyone is so quick to shit on the kid in the fridge while nobody talks about Coffin Willie

You made a mistake here, that action is not because of The Bloody Mess Perk, that happens automaticly of through out The game you have done enough Bad Karma Things, Then your Character is "Bad" and he does that, If You Have done Good Karma things, Then this not happens, and you can Still do that, by atacking him your self
the game has a manual in the game files for both the Steam and GoG versions
dead ass didnt know the Necropolis Ghouls could die until my third playthrough lmao
Great video, you're doing great!
Asking as someone who recently finished Fallout 1 off an original disc: are the Steam/GOG versions this far zoomed out or did you use a mod?
You can adjust it based on your liking. I have it in 1920x1080 because that's my monitor size and that's how i like it, but it can be scaled down to original if you like
@@ramblelime Thanks! I can see the appeal of seeing more of the screen at once, but a more zoomed-in camera makes the locations feel more real to me, maybe because it makes the repeating tiles less obvious
@@BramdeGrootYT that name looks pretty Dutch
Noice
Necropolis is not morally gray, but even then one might make a case that ghouls aren’t really people at all
When I first played Fallout 1 I didn't like it at all but now I'm playing 2 and I really really like it was hard for me to get used to it tho
FO 2 had its own problems but it was even better than FO 1 imo.
Trinston was here .. .
Yooo the like button does this weird glowing thing when he says "mini nuke that like button" wtf I've never seen that before
me imaging 2 fallout trilogies.
1ST fallout 1, 1.5 Resurrection, 2.
2ND fallout New California, New Vegas, The Frontier.
26:30 interplay is the publisher, not the developer
I hate that it's so hard for me to get into games beyond a certain era due to how archaic they are. I grew up in the early 2000s, so anything from the PS1 & Nintendo 64 era is about where my limit is. Anything beyond that is too alien to me. After tracing my first video game back to possibly the SEGA Genesis, I've been making more of an effort to rectify that.
This channel will explode
I wonder how many Veterans played this game and really got to feel the ending
honestly dude the ui wasnt great but with a healthy attitude towards experimentation it isnt too hard to figure out how things work lol.
