PRINCE FROM ANOTHER PLANET takes its title from a New York Times headline that accompanied its rave review of Elvis' 4 back-to-back sold-out shows at Madison Square Garden (he was the first to do so, ever) the weekend of Fri through Sun, June 9-11, 1972. The shows were not officially filmed, though, this is 8mm fan footage discovered a while ago. Polk Salad Annie 1970 (full version) is the way to go, yes. 🤩
The song describes the lifestyle of a poor rural Southern girl and her family(The girl is mean, her mom's in prison, her daddy's lazy and brothers are only good for stealing) Polk Salad ([Poke Sallet) refers to a cooked greens dish made from pokeweed(like a turnip).
That was being filmed by a fan, the audio was recorded by RCA for a an album, so although it looks like the lights are going out its just parts of the performance that were not recorded by the fan. Nice reaction! 👍😎🔥
I love this version....the guy who filmed it took a recording device with a tripod into the arena and hid it and the blackouts were when the guy stopped filming....that's why it's grainey and incomplete but it was only discovered and released within the last 10 yrs or so as part of a set with a great documentary...these shows set attendance records and were attended by superstars like Bowie, George Harrison, Paul Simon amongst others.
When you hear the word "Truck", he's talking about a truck patch. From what I understand farmers had two kinds of crops, one you sold and one you kept for yourself. So, when he says "Stealing watermelons out of my truck patch" he meant his own personal garden. As for this video, believe it or not this is one of my favorite versions, the other being from the evening show of this very day. So all that talk about 1970 doesn't bother me. The energy was still there. 👍
“Prince From Another Planet” was the name of the article in I believe the New York Times reviewing Elvis’ 1972 record breaking appearances at “Madison Square Garden” in NYC. Also no one is turning the lights out, RCA recorded the audio of the concerts and the video was actually filmed by a fan in the audience that only filmed certain parts of the concert. Nice Reaction! TCB⚡️
David Bowie took a plane from England to see this concert (David was a big Elvis fan, and was also born on the 8 of january as Elvis was) Bowie still had his outfit on from his Stardust tour (really crazy clothes). Also Simon and Garfunkel, George Harrison and many other celebraties was there. Elvis broke The Beatles and The Rolling Stones previous records for most sold out shows at this Tour which was crazy because Elvis was nervous that they wouldnt like him there as he was a southern guy. How wrong he was 😁
Oh yeah, Polk salad is another name for greens. You know, the food you eat, especially the South. So this song is about a girl they call "Polk Salad Annie". A girl from the poor side of town who was known for being mean and nasty. She carried a straight Razor, dammit!😂
Btw, research guys. It's 2 fold. Gator got yo granny refers to dice (bones)...gamblin. The old south in a nutshell. The lyrics really don't have much to do with the song...its Elvis taking the song to another level making it his own.
To see the baseline watch the 1972 Hampton Roads version and it’s a clearer version also. Polk salad is like collard greens but u have to cook it right otherwise they are poisonous. Do the 1970 Las Vegas version he tells the story. Prince from another Planet is what they called him when they did the article for the New York Times I think the reporter called him that. Elvis in top form gave an outstanding concert sold out Madison Square Garden all shows and the press just loved it. You can see his press conference to that also.
Taste in music is relative. I think you should only worry about which performance you watch if someone makes a monetary donation with a request. I would bet that if you check live from Honolulu and the comeback special for any song you are going to react to, most people will be happy :) I have never seen this version, so I have no opinion about it yet but Elvis is in it and that’s all that matters
@@Roblockdn Well, if people don't give a link or are more specific with their song request, you can't know which video is the right one, but here's something to keep in mind that might help to pick the right ones. Obviously Elvis is before the conveniency of cell phone cameras, so out of all the thousands of concerts he gave, we have very few good videos of him live. - Anything from "1970" Las Vegas is usually a good bet that it's a good version, as it comes from a professionally filmed movie documentary called "That's the way it is". - Any songs that says from the "1968 comeback special" which aired on NBC in 68 is great quality and is often versions that people request. - Another concert professionally filmed is from "Aloha from Hawaii 1973" - videos from the "1977" concert, which was filmed just a few months before his death, may be good quality but many people don't like to see Elvis in such a ruff shape, even though the vocals are still good. So just be aware, unless specified, this may not be the version they asked for. - There's also "1972" videos, which comes from another documentary movie called Elvis on tour. Mind you, if you find a song request and see both the 1970 and 1972 version, chances are most people prefer to see reactors do the 1970 version. Anything else outside of those 5 years, 1968, 70, 72, 73, and 77, would have been recorded by a fan on an old 8mm camera, and probably not the song version that is requested, if it's live in concert. Hope I made sense and this helps a bit, so you don't keep getting....."you got the wrong one."
This was filmed by a lucky fan who could not record the whole show due to it being ILLEGAL to film his shows by non professional film crews. As for the song itself. It's a fun jam song that the lyrics are unimportant. It's all about the performance when it comes to Elvis.
Hilarious. That commentary about the alligator part was pretty damn funny. Looks like the others Below have filled in all the interesting information. I do also prefer the 70 version but I've seen this one before with the fan footage and the professional RC a recording and I do love the Absolute Energy of it and you can kind of see slightly different dance moves to it the man that musical performance was just high energy. It really cooked.
REDO POLK SALAD ANNE 1970 Live in Vegas version, The version you watch was a Home video shot by a fan is the only knownfootage of the Madison Square Garden concerts. The 1970 live in Vegas version is from the same show from suspicious minds that you redid. Please redo this song his performance was incredible he was in his prime and it’s high-quality the last time I checked it had 47 million views it will be worth it
It's not a question of having the lights off, but, being recorded by a fan on an 8mm camera, saving tape for the best bits because it's expensive and does not hold that much!
Reactors Asia and BJ notably the latter understood what the words were about and what Polk Salad was but BJ came from that type of environment. Interestingly this is amateur fan film that turned up just a few years ago from Madison Square Garden 1972 so that's why you see blank parts.
Best version is the From Thats The Way It Is, in Las Vegas!! Madison Square Garden performance wasn't professional recording because his manager didn't want 2 spend the extra money.
And while you tune in to the '70 Vegas version, maybe you could not continually cut in to talk or laugh over his singing; you could also get the lyrics from the internet; it isn't really difficult to get the meaning; thank you.
Y'all shouldn't be talking and critizing someone who apparently didn't know Elvis sorry did not like this reaction There is no one who has ever came close to Elvis uniqueness entertainer and talent! 😎❤
Here ya go, the lyrics, lol. If some of ya'll never been down south too much I'm gonna tell you a little story so's you'll understand what I'm talkin' about Down there we have a plant that grows out in the woods, and the fields And it looks somethin' like a turnip green Everybody calls it polk salad Now that's polk salad Used to know a girl lived down there and she'd go out in the evenings and Pick her a mess of it Carry it home and cook it for supper Because that's about all they had to eat But they did all right Down in Louisiana, where the alligators grow so mean Lived a girl, that I swear to the world Made the alligators look tame Polk salad Annie, gators got your granny Everybody said it was a shame Because her momma was a workin' on the chain gang A mean vicious woman Everyday before supper time, she'd go down by the truck patch And pick her a mess of polk salad, and carry it home in a tow sack Polk salad Annie, the gators got your granny Everybody says it was a shame Because her momma was a workin' on the chain gang A wretched, spiteful, straight-razor totin' woman Lord have Mercy, pick a mess of it Sock a little polk salad to me Her daddy was lazy and no-count, claimed he had a bad back All her brothers were fit for Was stealin' watermelons out of my truck patch Polk salad Annie, the gators got your granny Everybody said it was a shame Because her momma was a workin' on the chain gang Yeah, sock a little polk salad to me, you know I need me a mess of it Sock a little Sock a little polk salad to me, you know I need a real mess of it (chick-a-boom) Sock a little polk salad, you know I need a real (chick-a-boom) Ching-ching-ching-ching-a-ling (chick-a-boom) Ching-ching-ching-ching-a-ling (chick-a-boom)
He brothers stole watermelons out of his truck patch. I guess Polk salad was a thing in the deep south. Everybody’s right, 1970 version was much better. This is just a fun number he sometimes did in Vegas.
Yeah, this version is NOT the one. Everything from MSG was recorded intermittently by a fan's 8mm camera. Very lucky to have the footage, but yeah....unless you've seen a good quality version you'll never get it. 1970 as everyone has said, you'll actually get the story. Too bad you picked this one, bummer.
Yeah, we looked for a few and others didn’t seem great quality either so we randomly chose this one. We’ll definitely react to the 70 version! - kloquewerk
It's also very simple to open the lyrics alongside the video, if you're having trouble hearing what he's singing. It'll save you a lot of useless commentary.
The best version imo is from 1970 /Vegas.
Unbeatable!
Absolutely.
no, this one is the best one
1970 version is the best to watch.
This was awesome .Elvis is the Best. As simple as that. Accept that

There is not one year I can say Elvis was the greatest. To me he was greatest his whole life. Still is.
People are idiots and choose versions. It's all Elvis. Every version is legendary. Keep up the reactions.
People aren't idiots life long elvis fans know the best versions and are only tying to help people reacting see the best
The Las Vegas in 70 is awesome!
He left this world far to young. Aug 16th 1977

DO 1970 Las Vegas
It's all relative and he kept evolving. Always gonna be complainers. It's all good and Elvis never disappointed

Ol so guys all elvis is great but to understand the song you have to react to 1970 las vegas
Polk salad is a green that grows wild
Lol you are right you picked the wrong one!!
Polk Salad is actually Poke Sallet, also called Pokeweed, a highly poisonous weed that could possibly be eaten if picked @ right time in the spring.
You knew it was coming ! You picked the wrong one ! The one from Vegas guys ! Lol 😂
You guys are cracking me up because it’s true, you have the wrong version! Lol

Used to know a girl lived down there and she'd go out in the evenings and
Pick her a mess of it
Carry it home and cook it for supper
Because that's about all they had to eat
But they did all right
Down in Louisiana, where the alligators grow so mean
Lived a girl, that I swear to the world
Made the alligators look tame
Polk salad Annie, gators got your granny
Everybody said it was a shame
Because her momma was a workin' on the chain gang
A mean vicious woman
Everyday before supper time, she'd go down by the truck patch
And pick her a mess of polk salad, and carry it home in a tow sack
Polk salad Annie, the gators got your granny
Everybody says it was a shame
Because her momma was a workin' on the chain gang
A wretched, spiteful, straight-razor totin' woman
Lord have Mercy, pick a mess of it
Sock a little polk salad to me
Her daddy was lazy and no-count, claimed he had a bad back
All her brothers were fit for
Was stealin' watermelons out of my truck patch
Polk salad Annie, the gators got your granny
Everybody said it was a shame
Because her momma was a workin' on the chain gang
