French even paid a lourd tribute for having followed our american brothers after 9/11. French were in charge of the Kapisa valley and mounted combined operations with americans. French suffered heavy losses gainst strong guerrilla. French left after about 10 years of presence (present till the beginning, 2001-2011 I think). I think we had about 5k-10k+ infantry and cavalry there at the best. which was at those time 10% of our fighters. Not nothing. We mostly sent fighting troops and supports were americans. There were several french-american forts there. Not so cowards finally.

Such incompetence and the biggest US debacle in recent memory, but as you say we must never forget the sacrifices of our soldiers.
