I am a native American English speaker but feel I can improve and learn something new from watching videos like this. I feel no embarrassment or fear when letting someone know I don't understand them, or I overcome such feelings since embarrassment and fear, though natural, are hindrances to learning. But I think your approach to emphasizing what you understand before saying what you don't understand is very sound, such as when asking someone to repeat the last part of what they said. There are many reasons for not understanding: the speech is slurred or mumbled, the volume of the voice is low, the vocabulary is not familiar, the reasoning is not followed, the perspectives are different, different words have different shades of meaning to people. I notice when something is not understood, often it's part or some parts of the statement that's not understood. But when the listener simply says that they didn't understand the speaker might then raise their voice or speak more slowly or use different words for restatement when maybe none of those was where the problem originated. For efficient communication, I agree it's better to first emphasize what was understood. Also, we can repeat what we heard back to the speaker. I'll make replies like: - I understand the part about . . . but what did you say about . . .? - I believe you said . . . is that correct? Thank you for this content. I know there is more I can learn from this channel so I'll be watching more videos 😊
Hey, Anne Marie, Thank you so much for sharing this useful lesson. The most question I found useful from this lesson is " I want to make sure I understood you perfectly, so could you say that one more time?", " I'm not a hundred percent sure I understood everything you said, would you mind saying it once more?" Best regards, Ahmad
Notes: 1. I didn't catch everything you said. Could you repeat that last part again? 2. I want to make sure i understood you perfectly. So could you say that one more time? 3. I'm not 100% sure i understood everything you said. Would you mind saying it once more?
Wow this is awesome ! When I don’t understand things. I usually say “I’m sorry I don’t quite understand, can you please say it again?” And I feel so stupid!
I recently accepted a job at a long term care as a receptionist. It’s entirely new environment and new field of work for me. I feel so stupid when I answer phone calls and I don’t understand a question.
Hi Sarah, I'm glad to know my lessons are helpful. I have several available for job interviews, which you can find in this playlist: ruclips.net/video/nuxzL6f2SCU/видео.html
Thank you very much Annemaria! This is video exactly what i needed 'coz English it's my second language and sometimes i have these situations in my job, Now i know how to avoid akward moments))) You are great!!! Keep up the good work;)
Thank you so much ma'am for online classes it's really helpful..😊😊 In this session I like the most is - I'm not 100% sure I understood everything you said, would you mind saying it once more? And idioms as well .... I guess we can also say - "I'm totaly puzzled what you said, would you mind repeating once again?"
I have tryed everything to understand and I still the same now I left school when I was 14 years old that's why I have a keyworker who helps me out and talks on my behalf as I don't get it and it gets me in a mood bad and my anxiety go higher but thanks for the video it might help people out but not me i be like it from day one
Really appreciate your lessons and these are just what I need. My question is " does it make sense? or do you understand what I meant? " When I was saying these sentences, is that the polite way to say? Thank you very much.
Thanks for the comment. I'm glad my lessons are helpful. Both can certainly be polite. They are casual or informal but still often used. If you'd like to use more than a yes/no question, you could also say, "Let me pause here to make sure everything is clear. What would you like me to clarify?"
Thanks for sharing your wonderful videos. They are very helpful. It may be an out of context request..but could you please tell me the brand of the top you are wearing in this video. You are looking so elegant and sophisticated.
thanks youu so much teacher .. I hope u can do us a favor and make a video about how to enrich our speaking with words like " like, I mean, literally, basically, so ..." Hopefully u got what I 'm trying to say. thaaanks
Some advanced contactions... some recent faves... Wayment?! Wayyyment wayyment =wait a minute and yeeeeen even ,= you didn't even... a contraction of an existing contraction. Lol 😆 believe me when I say I have had a fun time learning English as a first generation filipino in America. But ive learned to grow and lobe my pilipino- chitown american accent and hybrid vocabulary lol
Hey, Annemarie. Thanks for the excellent teachings and generosity on sharing your experiences to improve our comprehension. At the beginning it was difficult to me cause brazilian portuguese and english are quite differents and at the moment they are getting more helpful and clear as time goes by.
Short term goals are things you plan to do in say months or a year, such as finishing your degree, take a class or running a 5K or . Long term goals are things you plan to do over perhaps 3 or 5 or even 10 years, such as get your PhD, running a marathon, writing a book or learning a language.

I agree it makes some situations less awkward when you know how to approach it
I clearly notice that you think before you speak because your speech is really smooth and fluent.
Here I was thinking I speak fluent English, but no one told me about intonations, so thank you! I'll be back!

super nice mentor anyway how to answer the questions " what is your short term goal & long term goal?
Short term goals are things you plan to do in say months or a year, such as finishing your degree, take a class or running a 5K or . Long term goals are things you plan to do over perhaps 3 or 5 or even 10 years, such as get your PhD, running a marathon, writing a book or learning a language.

I want to make sure I understand you perfectly so could you say that one more time
Hello maam I don't speak English well 😥
I think I didn't catch everything what you've just said. Could you say it again, please?
That's definitely a great way to respond.
I think my wires are crossed. Everything I said is just a word salad. That was as clear as mud!
Salad one
Could you repeat that, please?. Is ones of my usuals
And I just say yes to everything because I don't understand at all
Yes
Can I say?, I'm afraid I didn't get that.
Pardon me !
Clear as mud is not commonly heard in the eastern US. Just FYI.
What did you say?
Scuse me
You are as clear as mud
I'm sorry, I've lost
Thanks
