"Did you learn this melody from me? Or did i learn it from you?" - Selene
she didn't even consider that maybe this swag ass tree is just a blue oyster cult fan
@@am-180 is this from one of their song's? Sorry for my ignorance
@@diegoaguado6037 yeah, that big melody is from Don't Fear The Reaper, which is used in game multiple times
@@am-180 i've seen people mention this song and i really struggle to see the connection. IMO "don't fear the reaper" is a totally different vibe from this song, like complete opposites. It may share some notes here and there but i don't see them being similar in any way apart from that.
@@DarkSuo1 i mean, it's only the refrain but it's right there. selene comments on it with the quote posted up there. the song is all over the game, it's basically the main theme
The climb to the tower followed by Hyperion fight is one of the most phenomenal experiences in gaming. It burned into my fking soul and I cant get that song out of my head.
Thank you Housemarque.
I remember hearing it for the first time when I entered the area, and I thought to myself "That is some sweet music."
I was surprised to learn that not only was it in the boss fight, but it was also tied to the boss as well. Definitely one of the best songs I've heard.
It's also difficult to explain to people that haven't seen it - it has to be experienced
It's one of the things that solidified this game as one of my all time favorites
That is still my favorite boss in the game ! just for the bad ass organ playing! 🔥
This! The climb while the ambience builds. You struggle to fight your way up the tower. Reaching the apex. You see the organ and the music crescendos simultaneously as the camera reveals the boss. One of the best gameplay experiences I have ever encountered.
100%
I haven't played Returnal since it came out but I think about this song and that climb weekly, if not daily. Epic is too soft of a word but its all I have in my vocabulary hahaha
That moment when the music starts getting louder and clearer until you realize the music is NOT non-diegetic but actually emanating from the top of the tower... and then you complete the ascent as the pipe organ crescendos to a screaming howl. Freaking incredible!
Happens in Zelda 64 as well I believe.
Finding the discarded audio recording on a dead previous Selene where she's having a meltdown about how she can't make the music stop because Hyperion keeps respawning with her was a DEEPLY chilling moment.
@@DGneoseeker1had to be an intentional homage
RUclips just made me a playlist with this first, and 'Don't fear the Reaper' second. You win this round RUclips.
Really one of those once in a lifetime gaming moments as you climb the tower and have the crescendo. Had the hairs on my arm rise up.
Bro I legit was playing and noticed the music crescendo, i immediately started capturing my gameplay. Got up to the top and didn't even realize the boss was playing the organ. Still a awesome moment
Ong it gave me goose bumps
I would climb the tower and just stand outside the boss arena for a while every time I got to the end of this biome even though I already beat it. This song is just enthralling
Me too it to me just has so much power to it especially when you’re right in front of the arena it almost sounds like something you’d hear at a funeral
Yeah it's the organs. Very haunting and very emotional. Got a modern twist too. Love it
Lol same, after defeating him bunch of times, one time I just stood there on the ledge and watched him play it for solid 10 minutes. Felt like being in the standing row for the Hans Zimmer concert or something lol. They proceeded to annihilate him.
Yeah I feel exactly the same way, keep coming back to this song! So haunting, moving and it just leads you to literally another plane in your Imagination
This was when I knew Returnal was one of my favorite games ever
A perfect example of how video games can have the greatest music.
Returnal is truly a work of art in its style, story, dialog, combat, and music.
Anytime someone says they're looking for ps5 games, I will recommend Returnal to everyone.
It's challenging but satisfying.
I got chills from the aggressive boss fights mixed with the incredible music.
In my opinion, Returnal is damn near perfect.
This was heavily inspired by the interstellar theme
@@JakeRandallhow? It's literally a rendition of don't fear the reaper
@@bryane727 listen to it! You tell me brother 🫶🏻
@@bryane727lol cuz they said so apparently
@@aminemalagouen9987 interstellar invented the organ
The song imprints in your mind after the fight. We will revisit it once a while.
Beat the boss last night at 2am after a huge binge. Song was echoing through my mind all night as I was trying to sleep.
I think the organ player might be Selene's father. After all, the names line up with Greek myth. He taught her how to play it and now this place is haunting her with it.
“Like Hyperion to a satyr” -Shakespeare
I dont there there was any n all references to selene's father
@@lawn_mower4941 She mentions in one of her recordings (AST-AL-042) "The Severed achieve clarity in madness by climbing the Throne of Exaltation. My father once sat atop it; every organ pipe chanting in a way I never could." The tower in which Hyperion plays strongly resembles an older church tower and the organ they play is basically a swallow's nest organ (very high up, very throne-like) so it's a pretty strong argument for Hyperion being her memory of her father.
@@fireisprogress😮
@@fireisprogressI missed this. Thank you.
I played that moment with my girlfriend watching. She has no relationship with gaming. She was shocked, telling me her whole body hair was lifted. She was screaming and shouting while I was fighting and telling me through out the fight were to watch out. After that she has been watching all my walkthrough of the game ever since. 20 years of my active gaming experience Salut RETURNAL for this phenomenal game experience.
Rotfl I had same situation tonight. I destroyed Hyperion in 2nd fight against him (cuz no good items in 1st try). My girl was in shock:).
Never leave her. Lucky chap 🙌
It's Everything. It's eye Candy, it's plot is mysterious, it's themes and world is all much more as well.
She felt the CINEMA
My jaw dropped when I heard and saw this. One of the best moments I’ve experienced in my 30 years of gaming. Simply beautiful.
25 years, hundreds of games completed and at least thousands played, but this game... This is one of the most incredible experiences of my life
MAN I FUCKING LOVE THIS BOSS SO MUCH I WILL NEVER FORGET THIS EPIC FIGHT EVER!!!
Just got here... HOLY SHIT WHAT A RUSH OF A SONG.
Hyperion was going NUTS on the pipe organ. Its insane to think about the idea that it just heard the melody from Selene after those centuries and held onto it. The idea that these creatures have a sameblence to music like that just BLEW my fucking mind.
A standing ovation is owed to Housemarque on this tune here.
To me, it seemed like the Atropos was a supernatural "plane of death" with access to Selene's memories as well as a connection to humanity. I never thought of Hyperion as "learning" the song as much as just knowing it through the same supernatural phenomenon responsible for the childhood home, etc.
My interpretation was that Selene wasn't specifically connected to Atropos. Atropos did what it always does. It serves as an afterlife for humans, each getting their own experience.
What made Selene special is that she didn't get to Atropos through death (the first time), she got there by physically traveling there, and as a living person, she was an intruder.
@@EpicMathTimeInteresting enough, Atropos is the name of one of the Fates of Greek mythology, specifically the one in charge of cutting someone's thread of fate, or in simpler terms, deciding when and how a person died, so in this case, it's as if Atropos refuses to cut Selene's thread, leaving her to die over and over without any escape from this cycle
I always felt the whole experience was Selene's nightmares. All this is in her head, as she deals with the trauma of her life, the death of her child, her dismissive mother....
Either way, one of my favourite games.
Just heard this in the PC release today and had to come find it. Phenomenal.
Same here. I got real hype when my carbine shots synced up with the music 😍
@@itol2398 same i just beaten the boss man it was such an EPIC FIGHT
Its really one of the most epic introductions to a boss for a long time now, all the build up in music while u climb the tower with the fight itself as climax. 11/10
Literally one of the best boss fights in gaming history
It's rare in a video game to have such a memorable experience... climbing up and then sitting outside and watching him play, that was definitely one of those moments
There's a moment, between hearing Hyperion's theme and discovering what it's been referencing, where you notice that it's not JUST the music that he's playing that's pulling from Don't Fear the Reaper; the enemy encounter music throughout this whole section of the game has ALSO been playing parts from the same song.
The further you climb the further people can be a valuable part of your life and you can enjoy your time with us
It’s only a 5 notes refrain though. I agree with everything you say, but this exact song is not Don’t fear the Ripper, like a lot of people in comments say. It’s a completely original music piece with a short refrain inserted into its initial phase
@TheMicroaggressor Oh, make no mistake, the full song ISN'T Don't Fear the Reaper. I agree with you on that. I said it was pulling from Don't Fear the Reaper, not that it was a full-on cover.
@@Cuiasodo Yeah I understood you well man, just voiced my frustration from all those people saying THIS IS DON’T FEAR THE RIPPER BY BLUE OYSTER CULT
hyperion is a beatiful boss
listen that wonderful music getting louder and louder when you climb the tower
they give you that feeling of trascendental
it's beatiful
thanks mann to give us that masterpiece
After an entire week of medical issues, confusion, and fear. Climbing the tower, and fighting this boss was purely magical. One of my favorite boss fights ever.
Man I get such chills in the section from 2:36 and then the drums kick in - what a sick boss theme and makes this fight so memorable.
What an amazing journey. Returnal deserves more love and popularity
Hands down, one of the most memorable and atmospheric boss fights of all time. Hats off to Housemarque for the design and Bobby Krlic for the theme.
One of the most majestic bossfights I have ever had in a videogame. So beautiful, poetic and impactful.
This is an amazing boss to hook players back onto the game right after the huge plot twist, it’s amazing and this is where the game really shines
This game is undoubtedly one of the best available. The story, the music, the worlds, the mechanics, the weapons, all beautifully crafted. I'm surprised they haven't immediately shifted their attention to creating a sequel. I wish I could erase it from my memory just to relive that first-time experience all over again.
It’s because only 10% of people have actually beaten it. I’m nearly 700 hours in. I’ve beaten it in one single run without dying one single time. The game is too hard for casual gamers it takes a lot of commitment to complete Returnal tbh.
But I did tweet the director asking for a sequel and he hearted it lol. Maybe in a few years but yeah this is still one of the best games I’ve ever played to this day.
4:00 that build up to an almost scream of anger and grief👌
Best bossfight in the game, the absolute highlight.
This boss theme inspired me in such a way that made my own interpretation of it in Fuser. This theme is amazing.
One of the best boss fights I've ever done just in gameplay and with the music I was in love. When the tempo switched when you get to the next stage of the fight the first time I lost my shit.
man, the way this track evolves
OMG!
This game is perfection.
this is such a good song i think about it all the time
Every once a while i return to Returnal, just to experience the fights again. This boss fight is one of the best in gaming, period.
As someone who has platinum on all From Soft games I can say this game has some of the best bossfights and soundtracks I have ever played, this song gave me chills during the fight because it is just too unique. The bossfights are hard but fair, if you die you know it was your fault. I love this game and I wish it had received more attention, totally underrated.
boss not hard lmao if youre having a hard time either your weapons are wrong or youre playing it wrong, the game gives you an extended dash with I frames throughout that is on a 2 second cooldown, you are always equipped to not take much damage.
@@LinktheDragonslayermaybe he just meant comparatively..? Or maybe you're confusing the words "hard" and "impossible"? Everything that's possible in games provides the tools. By that logic, nothing in any game is ever hard. You just aren't using the right tools!
Jesus, people like you really need to grow up. Nobody thinks you're cool because you find something that (most) other people think is hard to be easy. They just think you're annoying. And kinda tiring.
@@gemixx8365 lol no the game isnt hard there are 6 levels and plenty of shortcuts there really isnt anything that should give you too much trouble if youre not playing like an idiot. Although its really true that some weapons do way more damage than others to bosses, so if the boss is hard you could just have a bad weapon. Hollowseeker isnt that great without portal beam vs nemesis and makes the fight way longer. Just take a launcher and youll do way more damage.
@@LinktheDragonslayer I think what he meant to say is.. whether the game is easy or hard is not up to you to decide. Everyone is different and have their own set of strengths and weaknesses, even when it comes to games. While this might be easy for you, it might not be to someone else who's.. I don't know.. older? doesn't game as much? That doesn't necessarily mean they're an idiot. In fact, it's likely they're better in life than you are.
Hence.. "you're not cool because you find something that (most) other people think is hard to be easy." and I agree with him, it's annoying when people belittle others because of such childish thoughts.
I find the game easy myself, but I can relate to people that find it hard. Stop acting on a high horse, it feels cringe.
@@felipemoraes3814 im not on any high horse lmao Returnal is a game whose boss fights offer crazy spectacle so while it might seem hard or unfair you need to remember that you have an op dash on a 2 second cooldown that makes you immune, so yes, because of that one thing the boss isnt hard, and if you think it is, its because youre not playing the game at as fast a pace as its capable of.
This theme totally remind me of something out of Interstellar. I remember instantly loving this music when i first heard it. Best track in the game by far.
Absolutely obsessed with this scene, the build up, hearing it gently at first as you climb, honestly such beautiful music I come back and listen all the time 😂 by far my fave boss out of the whole game! Stunning imagery and even more breathtaking soundtrack!
The build up up until the Boss fight and the surprise of what lies atop the tower. WOW. One of the best gaming moments ever. Such an ominous track.
It's so beautiful. I've never heard anything so beautiful in my entire life.
The atmosphere. The music. The story. I still come back to listen the soundtrack. Unbelievable it still resonates after all this time. It’s a top 5 game for me all time.
THE HAXAN CLOAK ARE TO THANK FOR THIS????
I cannot explain how important this is for me. I used to dance for years, and back when I started dancing I took a liking to choreography but I had to find music I resonated with. I would sift for hours each day looking for music which felt right, only to find a piece by The Haxan Cloak in 2010/2011 which felt right. It got acclaim from critics and my university alike, and it was all thanks to the intricate brilliance of the music The Haxan Cloak made.
To see my old dance life come back and hit me in the face when I connected with this piece here so strongly is such a wild ride. I'm stunned.
*All our times have come*
*Here but now they're gone*

I’ve been wanting a standalone track of this theme for months now. Thank you.
One of the most emotional experiences in a game. Made the hairs on my arms stand up. Then when your reach the top. It's breathtaking.
Absolutely incredible. Thank you so much, Bobby Krlic - this hits so very, very hard 💓

Please don't leave this amazing game.
Someday please make a continue...
Heliooos I am coming.
I love the game too and I don’t wanna be mean but wow is your grammar way off bro 😭💀 for a 34yr old that’s crazy
It's a game about trauma and self-inflicted hells? A sequel would be thematically incomprehensible?
Some people probably doesnt know. After u beat him once. He becomes harder and harder everytime u beat him. (Keep coming back before u go to biome 4 and 5)
The electropylon driver: 😎
So false....... why did people spread bullshit like this.
Oh. That’s why he had me ass handed to me after I chilled with him after getting Platinum
I figured out the big twist with Selene the moment i heard the organ leading to the fight due to my obsession with figuring out the piano keys she played. It came down to Dont Fear The Reaper and, for some strange reason, 25 or 6 to 4 from Chicago
Needless to say the entire game kept my attention so wonderfully
This game is honestly a work of art and a beautiful acid trip at the same time. It just looks stunning and the soundtrack is phenomenal. This song stands out to me though because of how much it must of messed with Selene’s head the first time she heard it. Like she says right as the battle starts, “Did you learn this from me, or did I learn it from you?” An emotional rollercoaster, another obstacle in her way out of the cycle, and now she’s trying to figure out who learned from who? It’s just beautiful. I love this game so much and I’ve only been playing it for 3 days 😭
One of the best song in the game history, as all music coming from Death Stranding/Hunt:Showdown/Elden RIng/Armored Core VI
Those music force the good memories about the games, keep us attached physically and mentally to those moments, and ofc makes us wanna do them again, and again, and again...
The Elden Beast, was heart destroying, seeing the final boss and, with the music changes, knowing that we're at the end of something...
Poor Hyperion, dude was just jamming his alien organ and we shot him dead 😔
selene not realising that its the only remaining souvenir that she has of her father is the saddest part of the plot
I think it’s just so cool with the fact that you can hear small parts of the music playing at you go through the echoing ruins and the way is get louder the more you climb and the music during the fight is just amazing this game is just a masterpiece
Love of two is one
Here but now is gone
One of the finest video gaming moments I’ve ever had. Anyone who owns a PS5 really should play this game. Absolutely for the gamers out there!
I'm agree. Absolutely gold. This music get ahead in the soul
Had to replay this again last night, this boss fight and atmosphere leave a permanent imprint on anybody experiencing it🔥

The best rendition of don’t fear the reaper, hands down
BRO WAS COOKING MID BOSS FIGHT🔥🔥🔥🔥🗣🗣🗣💯💯🔥🔥
I randomly started whistling that 5 note tune today and was having a hell of a time remembering where I got it from. All I knew is that it was from something seriously awe-inspiring and dreadful. What a fucking tune.
Ngl whenever I play I always go to hyperion the run just isn't the same without listening to the music again ❤
The most magnificent boss i ever faced in my whole gaming life
*Spoilers*
This is where the existential dread and horror of the game takes its full form. The fact that Selene can’t die no matter how many times she falls throughout the journey and that the pattern keeps repeating itself no matter what she does . Even when she “escapes” she return to the planet, eternally. It’s why the developers picked this song. Seasons don’t fear the reaper, but Selene wishes she could.
So I ain't played Returnal (plan to), but I have read the first two books of the Hyperion Cantos. This is the music that plays in my head while I read.
Here's where I fell in love with returnal
Actually the best boss I've ever had the pleasure to fight in a video game
I cant stop listening to this! SOMEONE MAKE IT STOP!!!-
GLORY GLORY GLORY
Correct me if I'm wrong but when Selene's kid, Helios died, either Selene herself or her father(represented by Hyperion) played this melody at Helios' funeral.
Maybe. I know it's playing in the car during the crash.
A cool detail is in the overgrown ruins you can find a room that has the same room of where you enter the doors to get the keys for the fight and the fact that the stair case up to the main room (with the two paths leading to the other areas) is the same area for the fist boss
First* sorry for the mistake-
Maybe the only time in my life, when I was sad beating a boss with my first try.
Just beat this boss as of right this second and had to RUclips this melody. Truly epic but sad I can’t experience it for the first time again🙏
I was wondering after the third boss how they were going to top that fight… this is how.
an organic organ, the original instrument is said to breath and sing. But this does breath life into the song of my soul. Wherever you are, watever you are doing. Take a moment then add your voice to the song in someone else's life.

Just learned today about this song basically being a cover.
I can't believe I didn't realize while playing the game !
One of those games i wish i could wipe from my memory and play all over again 🙃
After coming back to this for the tenth time in a week:
I DO NOT WISH TO REMEMBER
This game had a Death Stranding "not just a videogame but an experience" kind of vibe.
My favorite boss in the game. Just beat Ophion last week, but Hyperion was just a bop. The feeling of beating him in my first try was insane, and the fact that half of his boss fight he literally PLAYS THE MUSIC YOURE LISTENTING TO 😂
Twas a banger
Also don’t fear the reaper is the perfect choice for a game like this
Never played the game because of how hard I heard it is, but this is some great music!
You are missing a gem, try it on pc, not hard it looks like.
I swear when you reach Hyperion, and music hits, it's probably my most pleasant game experience, incredible.
P.S : Ton of games are more harder this one, most of bestiary have previsibles/recurrents pattern, even and specially bosses. This game doesn't bite, really :)
Having Leech rounds on the rifle was the only reason why I beat this boss on my second try. What an insane game.
Incrível como não tem alguém para fazer um cover dessa musica! Muito legal essa música!
Knowing that this is a twisted cover of the song playing on the radio during the car crash that killed Selene's son (where the entirety of the game is **actually** happening, according to my preferred fan theory), is such a fascinating detail to me. Did Hyperion learn it from her, or did she learn it from him, indeed...
It's the song that's playing on the radio in the car at the moment of the crash
@@andyjanson3141 It was also her father's favorite song.
The very name of this song seems like a mockery to Selene, because she can't die in her eternal return.
Selene is struggling with survivor's guilt and a lot of trauma. Don't Fear The Reaper is an insanely on-the-nose track for the context it appears in, and in a way, it indicts Selene. Her fear of death results in Helios's abandonment. She can't let it go.
Pretty pog
I love this game. First time getting there, and beating it literally by a hairs breadth. Fucking phenomenal.
Just recently encountered this boss for the first time. How can music this moving destroy her mind. This would meditate me like it's a medicine or a pain relief. I have yet to find the boss again as I failed on the last amount of health it had. Very fun game. Wish I played it sooner.

Masterpiece.
This is sound of eternity @ another dimension
Man I reached rank 24 on the global rank list. But I never played through single player. I stopped playing at the boss with this melody, because I like it so much. Till this day I sometimes climb up the tower slowly to listen to it.
You got an organ going there. No wonder the sound has so much body.
