  • The iPhone 6 has an aluminum body and gallium loves aluminum. So what happens when this liquid gets in contact with the device?

      @@LittleWhole Colloquially, room temperature is the range of air temperatures that most people prefer for indoor settings, which feel comfortable when wearing typical indoor clothing. Room temperature changes depending on several factors but the range is usually 64-89.
      top range 78-89 is cold weather comfort, whereas 64-77 is considered nighttime/hot weather comfort.
      i don't think anyone finds anything above 89 degrees "comfortable".

    The thing that happened with water was the aluminium reacting with the water to produce hydrogen (which is highly flammable) and aluminium oxide. This will basically separate the gallium to reuse later.

  • @Giganticasian
    @Giganticasian 6 лет назад +1

    Water reacts with the gallium and aluminum alloy that formed and causes the aluminum to separate from the gallium so that you can recover the gallium from the compound.

      +Spelling And Grammar Check yes it actually is toxic. only if you get it inside you body, which he easily could've if he had a cut on his fingers or something like that and he peeled open an electronic device, its rare to find electronics without mercury in them. and you do not want to touch mercury. also there are conductors allllllllll over motherboards and shit like that, that if you touch em while they're on (he almost did), it takes very little current to injure or even kill a human.

    • @svampebob007
      @svampebob007 8 лет назад +2

      +unwoundkiller you get all the gallium back from that reaction too. It annoyed me how this guy described why he was scratching the surface material though. Aluminium is a very reactive metal on its own, to the extent that it will create a very thin layer of fairly nonreactive aluminium oxide, hes scratching this layer of so that the gallium can be exposed to the pure aluminium so that it can create the alloy. I don't know why no one ever called it Galluminium though...

      +Rui Sa It's pretty obvious it isn't melting when you see it crumble off. Sure metals have a low melting point and maybe you thought that aluminum did (for some reason). But why would a company make a phone with a low melting point? Therefore you must assume it isn't molten aluminum because he is touching it with his bare hands.

    Why is it "hot" when he melted it? ...
    Did he put it in an oven?
    He didn't have to heat it THAT hot.
    Gallium melts at about 302,91 Kelvin (Which is 29.76 °C / 85.568 °F)
    He just could have put it next to a heater or somehow hot/warm water.

      Lithium Ion batteries have a non corrosive electrolyte consisting of a solvent which is usually Ethylene Carbonate or Dymethyl Carbonate. Touching it is actually under most circumstances, will not cause that much damage to skin. It's mildly toxic and can cause skin irritation similar to a rash, but certainly not going to eat your skin or damage it in a few seconds. It is wickedly flammable though, and can cause spectacular explosions and fires with very small amounts. It certainly is far less harmful then paint stripper. Speaking of which, if it contains methylated spirits or methanol, can cause permanent blindness and kidney damage simply by prolonged skin contact.
