- Former Appletreewick, Barden and Burnsall Angling Club president Hebert Normington fishing the traditional upstream wet flies on the Kilnsey Angling Club waters of the River Wharfe. The footage was taken from Anglers Corner presented by Bernard Venables. Not only does it show the delicate and sophisticated upstream wet technique, but also the blinkered and pompous attitude of the southern chalk-stream stockie bashers.
Enjoyed that look back in time, thanks for posting.
My pleasure
Wet fly fishing will always be my number 1
Great video and the comments below are as entertaining as the discussion in the video
Awesome movie, Mr. Smith. Awesome the flies, the place, even the never ending debate, I often wonder what they would have thought of the French NAF or NAV, or euro euronymphing or similar. Many fishermen do not consider at all of being philological to the most ancient angling sport, its literature, the studies, what is beyond the simple catching of a fish.
Many, many thanks.
Nice one Robert, thanks for sharing. Reminds me if there were a Time Machine, I would probably go back in time.
What a joy to watch Robert. I particularly enjoyed the gentleman's disagreement over Wet and Dry fly fishing. I still have my original late 50's copy of Mr Crabtree goes fishing. I seemed to recognise some of the river scenery which looked similar to that which Ollie Edwards fished in his DVD's. May I ask whilst I'm writing, could you perhaps demonstrate the Yorkshire Greenwell that appears in your excellent book sometime. Once again, thank you for posting
G.E.M Skues proceeded exactly like that for inventing nymph fishing (Minor Tactics for chalk stream) on late XIXe century. It's a very beautiful technique why observation, cast, possibility to fish on sight or on blind just on spotting the leader on the entry point on the water too see the bite. I fish like that in Normandy for trout, grayling and sea Trout (River La Touques) whit nymphs. I use 15 cm dacron no floating indicator beetwin tippet and leader for see the bite. I'm considering fly fishing and i regret the generalization of euro nymphing whitout cast, whitout observation in France. Anglers dont know that they're missing !
In a way, it's reassuring that dry fly anglers have been looking down on those of us who fish wet for many decades at least. Their current disdain for us is not new; it's just the way it's always been (and probably will continue long after all of us are gone).
Their loss is our gain!
Lovely bit of film. Thank you 👍
Glad you enjoyed it.
Great timing with this video Robert, just tying up some NC wets though more in readiness for next season seeing as the rivers re high. Thank you for sharing.
If it rains anymore i think I will be getting webbed feet!
Brilliant…. Haven’t seen that particular episode for years…… any more of these gems Robert??
Cheers
Dave
Very interesting video! Thanks for sharing.
Thank you so much for posting that. I wonder what Bernard and his guest would have made of Czech and Euro style nymphing,
I’d say they would hate it. Well for a start it’s not fly fishing
@@davidgregg8757it’s exactly fly fishing what you talking about
@@AlwaysOneMoreNothing wrong with it, if you’re that desperate to catch fish.😊
Think they would be turning in their graves. Euro nymphing is for people who can’t cast and only want to catch fish at any cost.
Brilliant stuff
Glad you liked it.
@@thedalesangler I remember watching these about 37years ago on VHS tape which I hired out from a video store these angler's were the grand masters of fishing thanks again for sharing
So much for catch and release
Just try both…it’s all fun. I have been fly fishing the majority of my life and have never encountered any prejudice one way or the other.
streamers too, lol good fishing
Wonderful. I wish I had been born posh in the 1940's
Cool! :)
Classic.
Wander what year this film was made
Let us all be manipulators of tackle - wet or dry.
Everything is harder up North
Since the time of Skues dry fly fishermen have been jerks I guess. Really cool old movie.
No catch and release back then..
Wind the clock back.
Snobbery among anglers.....always tong in cheek😂😂. I wonder what he would of made of a Euro mop fly....
