Fun fact: that thing your daughter said was also one of the main reasons Tim Burton did this movie (and the poem in which the movie is inspired of), he said that he saw both Halloween and Christmas decorations in a shop showcase and he liked so much the contrast and also proximity of both festivities that automatically started thinking on a movie based on that

You probably won't find this online (everyone seems to think it originated with this movie), but I'm old enough to know that the phrase, "bone daddy", originated in beatnik or jazz culture in the 30s or 40s, and it means someone who's particularly good at playing their instrument. It probably started out referring to trombone players.

Nightmare was directed by Henry Selick, not Tim Burton. Burton wrote and illustrated the children's book, designed at least many of the characters, produced the film, and, if you've ever seen any behind the scenes footage, appears to have been quite active on-set. He also co-wrote the script. But he was not the director - but that is something almost nobody seems to know. It's crazy because I only recently started actually paying attention to the "directed by" portion of the end credits of films I've been watching since I was a kid, like this one, and noticing stuff like this. George Lucas, for example, did NOT direct Return of the Jedi. It was Richard Marquardt. Irvin Kershner directed Empire.
Fun Fact: Henry Selick also directed Coraline, which, if you guys have not seen it, you absolutely must.

    • @bankbarcomo806

because he was directing Batman 2 at that time. He was going to direct Nightmare Before Christmas, but then got Batman 2. According to my recollection of The Movies That Made Us episode.

    • @robertbryant4669
      @robertbryant4669 10 месяцев назад

For my part, I don't understand what the issue is. Burton may not have been the director, yet it was nevertheless his story, and his aesthetic is all over it. The same is true for Lucas and Episodes V and VI. It's like saying that the animated Dr. Seuss movies are not, in fact, Dr. Seuss movies, but crediting them to the directors instead.

    • @vixenwinters6375
      @vixenwinters6375 10 месяцев назад +2

@@robertbryant4669 lol there is no "issue." I was simply stating a little known fact, as Tim Burton was given directorial credit at the start of the video.
      - Well, actually, there IS the issue of these lesser-known names not being credited for their work. There's that. Imagine having directed a movie that was produced by Burton, and everyone and their grandma was constantly crediting the far more already famous name for the film's direction.
I know these directors are in fact famous in their own rights - but credit where credit is due.

Here's a fun fact (and also something I myself learned a few days ago):
Originally, Oogie Boogie was supposed to be Dr. Finklestein in disguise, and the reason why he attacked Jack was because he hated how Sally loved the Pumpkin King so much. But Tim Burton hated that idea so much that he legit kicked a hole in the wall. 🤣
I think it goes without saying, but _that_ would've been a terrible plot twist. 🤣

Yeah it was made with stop motion animation. Which means they had little models (action figures), and would move the models body parts manually very slowly, bit by bit and frame by frame. Capture the image of the model in the new position and then continue. Something even as simple as turning a head or moving an arm took a long time.

This form of animation is called "stop-motion photography" as it uses many many many still images of posed puppets in handmade sets to create the film you see. You can find many examples of this style before and after this time but this is definitely one of the most successful. But it is unrelated to PIXAR as their films are made using 3D modeling/rigging software and are therefore CGI. Technically the posing and keyframing used in the CGI software is the same principle as stop-motion, but I think it's important to acknowledge that what you're looking at here was all hand made and posed and photographed as opposed to digitally sculpted, posed, and rendered.

There is some great voice talent in this movie:
The speaking voice of Jack Skellington was performed by Chris Sarandon (The vampire Jerry Dandridge in the movie "Fright Night")
The singing voice of Jack Skellington was performed by Danny Elfman, who was also the voice of Barrel (Lock, Shock and Barrel, the three who kidnap Santa Claus) and the Clown with the
    Tearaway Face.
The voice of the Mayor was performed by the late Glenn Shadix (The medium Otho in the movie "Beetlejuice")
The voice of Sally was performed by Catherine O'Hara, who was also the voice of Shock (Lock, Shock and Barrel) She played the mother in the "Home Alone" movies and "Beetlejuice"
The voice of Lock (Lock, Shock and Barrel) was performed by the late Paul Reubens (Pee Wee Herman)
The voice of the Mad Scientist was performed by the late William Hickey (Uncle Lewis in "National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation")
The voice of Oogie Boogie was performed by Ken Page.
The voice of Santa Claus was performed by Ed Ivory.

This was Stop Motion Animation. It is very difficult and you should research it to see all the work that goes into it. The characters etc are real models and each shot, not scene, each shot is one shot, then the animators go and move the models ever so slightly and do another snap shot and then move again. Repeat over and over again to make a movie. It makes you appreciate this movie even more. Love this movie! Have to watch it every Halloween season.

Here in LA they are having an event at the Hollywood Bowl amphitheater where they will screen the movie with the cast of the movie on stage and they will sing the songs from this movie live while movie plays in the background. They have done this a lot of times in the past but the sad thing is that this year they are doing it without Paul Ruebin (Pee Wee Herman) singing his part from the movie as he passed away this year. I'm sure that they will do some kind of tribute to him though.

Tim Burton is known for this. Beetlejuice (1988) in particular, he used a lot of stop-motion. And (side note) if you look closely at the beginning of the "It's showtime!" scene, Beetlejuice's "hat" is topped with Batman (1989) wings and a Jack Skelington head.

As for Oogie Jack now as ruler over Halloween town Banished Oogie to I think it's called the Outlands but he was allowed to only take part in The Halloween celebration however he chooses Oogie chose to be the the shadow on the moon
Like I said this is all from what I could find and gather since I really don't know the whole story but that's why oogie was scared of Jack

I have 4 songs from this movie on my playlist. Fave is Oogie Boogie's Song. And I've met the voice actors for Jack and Oogie twice at comic cons.

This was my favorite childhood movie because how different it was. But I am the same not a big fan of musicals. Was pretty funny freshman year of college hung out with my sister for Halloween and we both wanted to watch this. But just a couple minutes in we felt very cringe and old an agreed to turn it off. Its one of those movies we decide was best to watch with young kid or in the background or you really have to like musicals.

So what's the moral of the story?
Maybe that you don't have to change and immerse yourself in other traditions and cultures to appreciate them? Just be yourself and respect others goes a long way.
Or perhaps that if you are obsessed with your work but are not feeling happy, you don't have to change jobs. Just find something (or someone) other than your job to love.
And Jack missed to focus on the similarities of the hollidays. What's the most important thing about Halloween AND Christmas? CANDY!

"this was my favorite part when I was little" So it's not your first time watching? So you're just saying it is your first time for views? Or you're just twisting the Lexicon by saying it's your first time watching "together?"

exactly! now your catching on. then you click and instantly hear that I've seen it and he hasn't. then you say something nice instead of showing how nit picky and critical you tend to be.

@@TheOctobersReact some people specifically look up "first time hearing/watching" Of course I'll be critical and nit picky when videos are falsely labeled because it wastes my time. Spend more time correctly labeling your videos instead of being upset with me. *Our* is plural. Could have easily have said, "His first time watching." Anyway...
