Woodstock's favorite musical son, Levon Helm, was buried at Woodstock Cemetery Friday in a private service that attracted several hundred fans and friends.
I never met the man personally, and that's a shame. As a fellow Southerner, I feel confident in my impression of Levon as being a kind, warm, gracious and sincere human being. He seemed comfortable in his own skin. He was apparently the embodiment of everything I know to be good about Southern men. A real gentleman. What a loss. RIP.
jerry jah So what if Scorcese didn't like Helm? What does that prove one way or the other? Did it ever cross your mind that the problem could have been with Scorcese and NOT Helm? Let's see, Hollywood elitist, self important celeb vs a poor, down to earth, hardworking, Southern musician, Hmmm... But then maybe there is the fact that Scorcese is bud's with Robbie Robertson (who ATTEMPTED to screw Helm in a court case over writing credits ($'s for The Band's hits) and sought to discredit Helm in the public eye when he needed the money to pay for his medical expenses. The truth is something to consider when one seeks to cast an unfavorable light on Helm. Especially when he is no longer here to defend himself.
jerry jah Sounds as if you made my point. Whether Scorcese was or wasn't a celeb at the filming of the Last Waltz doesn't change what could have very well been a skewed view of himself and a distorted view of someone he may have felt superior to out of of some lame regional/cultural bias. He's a Hollywood elitist NOW. It's not a stretch to think that if one's life's ambition is to become one of Hollywood's elite, they have to have had an overwhelming desire to cultivated the seeds of moral bankruptcy from the moment they made the decision to take that path.
jerry jah What the fuck do you know about touring, promoters and managers "...rip(ing) people off..."? ZERO! You heard this about Scorcese and you heard that about Aerosmith and you heard this about Robbie Robertson - well I heard you are a fucking idiot. So what? Watching a couple of lame episodes of Behind the Music on VH1 doesn't make you an expert on anything but a couple of lame episodes of Behind the Music on VH fucking 1. Robbie Robertson CLAIMS he wrote all of those phenomenal songs. I say he is a lying cock-sucker. If there was ever a band who's music was the result of a beautiful collaborative effort - it would be The Band. Robertson STOLE the publishing from his stoned and naïve bandmates. He took money from his friends - and they all could have used it. That said - for The Band - Robertson was a great lead guitarist and was a great member of a fucking Awesomely great band.
jerry jah You blow Robbie away huh? OK. Funny no one knows you from Adam's housecat. Yeah, you're a bedroom shredder. ALL you presented here is just a foul mouthed, self imagined, WANNA BE killer guitarist with an attitude almost as large as your ego. It's just RUclips! No one cares and NO ONE BELIEVES anything you or ANYONE ELSE says. For the love of God, get over yourself and seek anger management therapy.
+pat coffey Pat,I am from Liverpool,England and I can assure you that they were never underrated here.I come from the city of the Beatles and the Band are still my favs of all time.Cheers.Jim.Liverpool.
that is absolutely beautiful that Levon is buried beside his great buddy Rick Danko. I had no clue, that put a huge smile on my face. Long live Richard, Rick, and Levon. Atleast their all together now.
You can catch Levon in many vintage movies, notably his voice work in The Right Stuff. He did classic character actor turns in The Electric Mist of the Confederate War Dead, The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada, and Shooter, all featuring his lovable Arkansas twang. Nothing phony about this guy.
saw levon helm play drums for bob Dylan's electric set on November 12, 1965 at the Cleveland music hall. all of the band members were in their early twenties. a great band. they were great with their tour with Dylan in the winter of 1974. I quit my job in Cleveland to see the band and Dylan together on jan 21, 1974 at the maple leafs gardens in tronto, Canada. I met Dylan in Cleveland on july 17,1991. he was very nice to me.
A private service. Yeah, that's rich. A family's most intimate and sorrowful moment enshrined on this, a forum so well noted for the respect and good taste. It depresses me no end that people can treasure a man's public works and feel entitled to invade his privacy in return. And no, I have not watched and left. I knew how I felt on this subject before and without having to inspect footage. Again, as posted above, this was a private service. So kind of us to have granted a fine man a final boon.
They are not actually "beside" each other...but both graves are "within sight" of each other. If you 'google image' Levon's gravesite there are other names either side of him..
The family service for Levon, was just that, private! The only thing that this shows is part of the funeral procession as it made it's way to his burial place. Some music in the streets and you can hear drums up on a hill, presumably where Levon was to be buried. Nothing of bad taste or 'showy', His fans and friends respected his privacy.
It's up there. Robbie Robertson wrote it, Levon sang the hell out of it, and also Rick Danko with the "wait a minute Chester". Watch the version from The Last Waltz with the Staple singers.
And walla walla in wash st has one of the best cancer research and treatment centers and a via on the hill fort walla walla the best for PTSD I hope the new wing done now
American treasure. One of the best that ever lived.
Wonderful drummer, singer, and story teller. May the great Levon Helm rest in peace.
Levon, Rickie and Richard...I hope they're all playing their beautiful music in heaven. Love you guys, you were the best.
And now that Robbie is with them I hope they're laughing and saying "Weren't we silly?"
God rest your soul LH. I was not sober when he pasted. I now am + saddened that he's gone. Viva the Band!

You aren't worth the time and effort it takes for a response.
Saw him at his 70th birthday gig on Hunter Mountain. Cold and rainy that night, but well worth the memory. Enjoy your rest...
BigOle Taters me too....went backstage with my friend Patrick Carlin (George's brother) and watched Levon blow out the candle's on his cake! :-D
