The original Schwarzkopf looping roller coasters had lapbars, eg Thunder Looper at Alton Towers and The Revolution at Six Flags Magic Mountain. They were great to ride - no head banging and fteedom of movement.
Agreed, the Schwarzkopfs still ride really well too. Ahead of their time Oddly enough, my first ever inverting coaster was a Schwarzkopf looping star 😊
@@LoopThemeParkAdventuresMany were retrofitted with over the head restraints to appease a worrying public. The lapbar versus over the head debate has a long history. Lapbars are much more comfortable and perfectly safe.
@@Jinxxx_xxxx100% the only way they can open the lap bar when the train is not in the station is if they strap a battery pack 2 the train itself. It is impossible for the lap bar to open by itself. Hope that helps😊
After experiencing my first jojo roll on a Mack Rides coaster right out of the station, I can honestly say that their lap bars are completely safe. It held all 260 pounds of me.
Really interesting, great vid. I have a question, we were at alton towers yesterday and ive never known so many rides to close, i was just wondering what technical faults could they find on a coaster to close it? Im genuinely intrigued from a mechanical point of view, like what do they look at or what is it telling them the ride isnt safe at that point? It was a little frustrating but they were class and they gave us a free ticket each to use within a year so its all good..
Thanks! 😊 Without being an expert, there are many reasons a ride could be shut down - some technical, coasters have many sensitive sensors for various safety measures, but also for reasons unrelated to the ride systems, such as cleaning up if a guest has been unwell, or if CCTV faulters. Naturally there is wear and tear, general maintenance required too, and supply for parts has been slower post-covid.
We don't even to only go back 15 years for safe lap bars on inversions. Let's not forget Schwarzkopf only had lap bars on their shuttle loop coasters which started to be manufactured in 1977 (I remember Thunder Looper at Alton Towers), and Revolution at Six Flags Magic Mountain opened with lap bars too. Again, these were 70s lap bars, so not even built to the standards that are required (and far more stringent now). Maurer's X Car design that landed in 2005 on (Hey look, another UK coaster) G-Force at Drayton Manor only has lap bars and inversions too. Having ridden Hollywood Rip Ride Rockit I can say the restraints are fairly bulky, but even as a larger rider (just over 300lbs/138kg ish when I rode it) I was pleasantly shocked by how comfy they were, even with the whip on that non-inverting loop. I mean the ride was rough when I went in 2016, but the restraints were fine. Bear in mind the same time I rode Dragon Challenge and the (at the time) refurbished Hulk in B&M seats with OTSRs the X-Car seats felt more comfortable and just as safe. Again, riding Icon in 2019 as a "larger rider" (so just under 290lbs/130kg ish) the restraints were secure and comfortable. Modern restraint design is amazing, giving the open feeling you want with more safety than you need (not that redundancies are a bad thing). Riding coasters is a liberating experience, and even more so with lap bars.
Oh of course, I was specifically focusing on these modern types of over the shoulder lapbars that Mack and Intamin use. The video would've been an hour long otherwise lol
Went on icon yesterday and love the freedom and airtime on the ride and we don't hold on so much fun 🙃 and infusion were we got our ears bashed a bit 😋
its been physically proven by numerous rides that we are safer with lap bars than with over the head restrains, ive rode a mack coaster, as Icon in blackpool is a mack coaster, and i will admit this i felt safer than a all the coasters ive ridden, im a person who loves coasters but has hated coasters with over head restrains for some reason theyve always screamed "unsafe" to me
@@LoopThemeParkAdventures ive always been scared of over the head restrains because they dont come all the way against your body like a lap restrain does, meaning with a over shoulder one theres still enough space for you to slide out if it hits a bend too aggressively
I rode it yesterday & was petrified for this reason but I promise you it's absolutely safe. Even with the air time you're completely strapped in around the waist. It's well worth it.
I have been on Helix at Liseberg in Gothenburg, Sweden. Helix have the same train and lap bars. You are safe with only lap bars. Even in a heart roll and you hanging on the lap bar up side down.
Basically the lap bar is safe because it grips round your hips which is the smallest part of your body that will anchor your whole body to the seat (over the shoulder restraints basically just go around your whole torso and it anchors you to the seat that way which can be uncomfortable and feel less free) . The lap bar is put all around your hips and waist (enough where it is impossible to slip out the sides (unless you are abnormally fat length ways and not width ways) and it is impossible to slip at the top and bottom because your ribs and rest your belly will stop you from slipping out, and your legs will stop you from slipping out in the other direction. I hope that helps a little, that’s what I thought when I braved riding velocicoaster.
Well I rode Hyperia! Watch the opening day vlog here: ruclips.net/video/vdtRxCJw_YA/видео.html 🎢
Mack lap bars not only feel super secure on the ride, they are also very comfortable. Super glad that we have them on Hyperia.

Lap bars are the best restraint there are, Mack lap bars are far better than any others.
The Mack lapbars are fantastic, but I think Intamin's edge it for me. Purely because marathoning Ride To Happiness bruised my hips 😬
Great video 👍 when i first heard it was only lap bars i was a bit worried. But now I'm excited can't wait to go on hyperia in June.
Thanks! 😊 Hope you enjoy it!
icon felt so safe and so free, so excited for hyperia hope i can go this year if not next
Yeah, the seats and restraints are perfect 👌
thank you for this video :) really made me more calm but also excited about going to thorpe park tomorrow :D

When you put the lap bar over you can you still push down just not up?

Amazing vid, more confident in lap bars now. Thank you 👍
That's awesome 😊
Yeah, ride engineers definitely have thought about this. Don’t think you know more than people who literally dedicate their lives to make these.
I certainly wouldn't claim to know more than the engineers! Just trying to reassure people who may not have as much info to hand 😊
Why are you so passive aggressive??
For me, safety is redundancy sure, but nothing can beat a good ol' failproof seatbelt.
Its sad that this video is necessary, i still can't comprehend why GPs think a modern coaster ist actually dangerous
A lot of it is programmed by the media, and by people who are just scared of everything 😂
dont foreget paranoid people: not only just lapbard but no seatbelts eather! have fun.
But missing out on some of the best roller coasters in the world is such a shame. Would you never ride an RMC or modern Intamin?
@@LoopThemeParkAdventures i dont need to when there are better coasters.
@Coasterflight765 Care to name any? I can't think of anything that beats the likes of Velocicoaster, Iron Gwazi etc, but each to their own 😊

@@xix94 Pretty sure the people who designed Hyperia know what they are doing...
@@xix94how often do you get in a car? Are you aware of how likely you are to get into a car accident compared to a rollercoaster accident?
Some deluded responses 😆 lapbars on inverted coasters have been around for years and are perfectly safe
Will they hurt your balls?
No
They gently touch them
Only if they're incredibly large
Lap bars only really contact hips and thighs. Surprisingly, despite the name, not so much contact on the lap
They are not safe don't trust this guy
What? 😂 Hundreds of coasters operate 100% safely with lapbars on a daily basis 😊
Maybe but nothing is 100% safe
