At 0:55 the speaker incorrectly says ". . . the main requirements for this incentive are that you get solar panels installed on a home that you own . . . ." That last word about owning the home is wrong. The law, 26 USC Section 25D, does not have a requirement that the person claiming the tax credit actually own the home. Also, in IRS FS-2022-40, page 5, the IRS said that renters can claim the tax credit.
That is an interesting point, and thank you for adding the context. I guess we'll have to amend that if we ever re-make this video. I will point out that the number of renters who want to permanently affix solar modules to the roof of the home they rent is probably vanishingly small, including people who make some sort of special solar-in-lieu-of-rent deal with their landlord.
Can you claim the solar tax credit every year that you add to your system or just one year?
Yes, so long as that "adding" each year costs you money. More specifically, you can claim the tax credit for every year you make a qualifying expenditure. Source: 26 USC Section 25D(a). In IRS Private Letter Ruling 201809003, the IRS wrote "Earlier installations of qualifying property do not affect the availability of the credit for qualifying property in later years. "
