This episode was so emotional, it's really brave for Genndy to show about a very difficult subject of death for parents: the death of their child or children. Seeing Lula (the witch that helps Spear & Fang) using her powers to see their pasts was gut wrenching, and seeing her child fall to her death was even more so. It makes it more satisfying when Lula turns on the coven and the Shamanka (the leader witch) so Spear & Fang could escape and she sacrifices herself to reunite with her daughter. Ok apparently the afterlife is a thing in Primal's world so...does that mean Spear's deceased family is looking after Fang's deceased babies? I assume so. Anyway, Primal has to be my favorite adult animated show currently airing, not just because its set in a prehistoric fantasy world, but by how seriously it wants to cover certain themes like trauma, loss of loved ones, and bonding through tragedies. Hopefully our heroes can get a happy ending by starting over with new families of their own
Yeah I agree with everything you just said this was a beautiful episode I hope we get more like that in the future there was one thing I always curious about where ever happened to fangs mate
The only thing that kinda disappointed me was the fight at the end between Lula and Shamanka. I mean I can understand Lula trying to buy Spear and Fang time to escape by holding off Shamanka but that was it. Nothing much from the face off between Fang and Shamanka's giant wolf form and nothing from Spear but I believe that was beside the point Genndy wanted us to experience. Not every episode need be full of testosterone fueled violence and gore and this is the series first step into the realm of dealing with self-sacrifice, the afterlife, worship, the supernatural and once again the lost of a loved one. By seeing the way Spear desperately trying to run away from what he saw during the ritual and after being discovered showed us just how fearful he was after seeing what just happened and that is understandable for someone like him who doesn't understand or rather never experienced the supernatural (that black liquid the ape-men used during death battle tournament may be supernatural as well as the mad plague but they pale in comparison to what we witnessed with the coven).
Another possibility, is that it might not have necessarily been an afterlife per se, but like this episode has brought out, a period out of time when she and her daughter were together, in fact the witches minor time travelling or time viewing abilities might tie in to the whole universes background. Maybe through meddling with their arcane magic, the witches or some other great magical beings created this contusion of a world out of different periods of history of our own and other worlds entire.
Seriously, that Witch/Wendigo is so freaky. Seeing Fang's offspring hatch was one of the cutest things ever and then I was throughly crushed when I had to see THAT again and seeing how happy Spear was with his family was absolutely heartbreaking. Seeing that good witch lose her child was terrible, but seeing her with her child in the afterlife left me with a good feeling inside. I honestly didn't think this episode would go in the direction that it did, but Genndy once again never ceases to amaze us. Also, remember that the Witch/Wendigo is NOT DEAD by the end. I get the feeling that we'll be seeing her again in season 2.
Life goes on. They won't stop their rituals. They don't even realize how easy it would be to bring men into the tribe and have normal families. From what I can see though, my theory is that the women in this tribe are either too young or far too old to have children the old fashioned way, with the single exception being the lead witch. She IS in the right age range to bear children hence it is SHE who performs the ritual that grants the other women children. It seems that her job also entails finding men and bringing them back with her to use for the ritual via that pterodactyl of hers. Killing it may slow the hunt down somewhat, but if she uses her powers, she could easily find and brainwash another to serve. Fang and Spear got away, but it IS possible we'll see the Coven again. I doubt it, but I also see it as possible.
@Arusiek90 she proved she could easily handle spear and fang so I'd imagine she could capture him again but there are other males she can capture too so it's not a big deal for her or her coven if one caveman gets away.
I’m curious if the coven can’t naturally procreate either due to age, the extinction of the males of their species or the magic they practice leaving them sterile. This may be the only way they can reproduce. And yes there are three more episodes I think
I agree with you but, how ever my curiosity is that maybe they are immortal by magic. If pregnant this is hard keep their power in check or they will lose their age preventing magic. Douse it make sense?
I moment you could have touched on was when Spear was screaming at Fang trying to break the witch's control. You can hear the desperation in his voice and see it in his eyes. It was such a powerful moment
I was sad too, but look here all witches are bad but surprisingly this one wasn't and that reason is because she actually loved and cared for her child. I was also surprised by how the leader turned into the giant wolf because that's not what I was expecting.
Their leader is not in any way human. Its form is too.. alien. a mimicry of a human. Honestly i don't think all of the witches are even 'bad'. Its like an inversion of the Hag trope. Hags tend to seek children to torment or murder and eat them. Here they seek children to fill in a hole, and by all means its likely all of the witches are genuinely caring for these children. The one that had forcus on her suffered a tragedy.
I saw it as they are a tribe where all their men died and the women remaining are/were too old to have children, with one exception. So they took to performing rituals as a means of replenishing both their population AND giving the aging women children which they were no longer capable of bearing on their own. The cost was that it required a male to be sacrificed in a ritual and the baby would be born using the one remaining woman of proper childbearing age to birth the children. She was likely using that pterodactyl of hers to hunt for men to use in the ritual by day and then bring them back to the Coven. It also appears that each woman gets one. 1 child only, 1 shot. The ones who hadn't recieved a child all had horns on their heads, but those who had gotten one, no longer had the horns. The nice one, had ended up ostracized by the others for her failure to raise her child when the daughter fell to her death chasing butterflies. She was still powerful with using the magic so they had her help in the rituals, but they clearly weren't sympathetic to her situation either. She used her magic to glance at the memories of both Fang and Spear, and felt sympathy for them, and nostalgia as it led her to look at her own memories of her daughter. Even temporarily forgetting that she wasn't actually travelling time, she was looking at memories as they were... Sad as they were... In the end she decided they had lost enough and she knew what they went through, so she helped them and forfeit her life. Notice how she didn't actually harm anything or anyone in their coven other than the pterodactyl. Why? Because she knows the rituals will continue regardless of what she did. But killing the pterodactyl is how she gave Fang and Spear enough of a head start to escape. The remaining witches would need another pterodactyl to fly and scout for men again, and by the time they'd find one, fang and spear would be long long looooooooong gone.
As far as Samurai Jack comparisons go, in that regard, I think this episode could be Spear’s equivalent to Jack going up against the Imakandi or Guardian. Likewise, Spear and Fang going up against the rabid Sauropod in “The Plague of Madness” could be likened to Jack encountering the minions of Set, where our protagonists can only run from an unstoppable adversary until they reach their goal (respectively the lava pits and the artifacts needed to summon Ra).
This was unexpected, not only because it was sad. I mean, the main antagonist of the episode wasn't killed in the end, meaning that we could see it again in the future.
This story found a way to move me in a profound way. A story of want, loss, grief, and redemption. I watched it just before I turned in and needless to say it stayed with me for a long time afterward. Having known loss during this pandemic it struck me to my core and I awoke to my own weeping. Oddly, I felt much better for it, and despite my better reasoning hold onto bit of hope for my own reunion.
I wonder if Fang even realized that she was being mind controlled the entire time. Anyway, great episode and a marvelous way of humanizing what should’ve been a one dimensional throwaway character. 🐍 💀 no step on SNEK! 🇺🇸🇭🇰
I know I was expecting a lot more action but it was very emotional. I was expecting spear and fang to run around and kick ass like they usually do but I still liked it shows how good of a writer Genndy Tartakovsky is that he took such a risk with this episode and people still loved it
That witch understood the bond between fang and spear through tragedy. Her sacrifice not only saved them but it allowed her to be reunited with her child. I just hope Spear and Fang can take down the other witches if they show up again.
This episode gave me tons of feels from it. It’s the sense of lose, losing someone to love is heavy on one’s heart it’s a burden that we’re forced to bare for the rest of our lives. I’m reminded of that everyday. I love Primal so much I want to draw something for it someday and I totally will draw something about Spear and Fang for sure.
This little old witch who had no lines, just screen time, had more character then most female characters in shows these days. Primal is becoming one of my favorite shows. Talk about possible plot down the line, could see a episode in which they find another tribe of humans ready to accept Spear in, but are reluctant let fang. Spear possibly finding another mate interest, and fang becoming jealous and trying to get through to him. While the female is distracting Spear the rest of the tribe try to kill Fang. Basically Spear is forced to choose them or Fang ( or they try to trick Spear by capturing Fang and trying to show Spear she left without him). Could be a trible of female cavemen, but since we got this one, just a normal tribe would work. Or we get the reverse and find another partner for Fang, and Spear has to deal with the drama of the new male dino trying to eat him when Fang isn't around. He can't harm him or Fang gets mad.
A few thoughts: - This is saddest episode to date. - I like how the show is escalating the danger with Spear and Fang forced to run instead of fight. - I don't think we've seen the last of the coven.
Your reviews are always excellent! I would have never started watching this show without your reviews and now I'm very glad I have. Much appreciated! 😊
Lula is so well written she immediately made the audience feel sad for her and like her in just one episode without her saying anything! That’s how you know Tartakovsky is a master of his visual storytelling
I just caught up on primal recently and one thing I noticed that no one seems to have picked up on is several possible hint about what the "wendigo" actually is. This being can cast magic, uses snakes in its spells, has horns coming off its head, can mind control others, gives birth to multiple children, turns into a wolf, and is associated with the color green. These are all things associated with Loki, and the later episodes introduce vikings and viking gods, so the possibility that this creature is a version of Loki doesn't seem outside the realm of possibilities.
There's this moment when Lula is looking at Spear's past, seeing him hold his child up to the sun to warm him. She's smiling, but then she realizes what must be coming and her smile fades. I thought that was one of the best parts of the episode.
Just the episode, tuned in for action was not expecting feels, serious I actually cried during all the flashbacks moments and bald my eyes out at the end. You don’t expect from an animation only 20 minutes long for such character development and getting attached to a nameless one time character it was just wow
You know that ending of this episode really hit me hard it is so beautiful to see the witch finally reunited with her child, it was a beautiful sight to see, Genndy Tartakovsky you have done it again.
These witches give me Skinwalker vibes as they fit the bill “Evil Native American Witches who have the ability to turn into, possess, and disguise themselbes as animals”
It also reminded me of how some vampires in pop-culture like Bram Stoker’s Dracula have the ability to both influence creatures of the night and change into bestial forms themselves.
I cried seeing all of them losing their families, I didn’t think this episode you’d turn out to be emotional and dark, I did expect spear and fang to fight all the witches to the death but I loved this outcome
Something tells me that those ladies are like some type of skin walkers. They can take form of a deer like creature, people with antlers or even other animals. But skin walkers don't teleport, they have super speeds, but they do use a little bit if dark magic.
The reason that spear just lived with his family seems to be that he was a Neanderthal not a homo sapien. Homo sapiens were weaker and lived in larger groups. Neanderthals typically lived in smaller family groups.
This is easily the most emotional episode of Primal, seeing both Spear’s and Fang’s past just hit me right in the Feels(Fangs especially), and learning of the Witch’s past even more heart wrenching.
1:19 I think the creative choice here was to have him resemble the Scotsman from Samurai Jack. It's a tease, a troll - sub/conscious suggestion that Spear and he might develop a similar relationship like the characters in Samurai Jack, to then kill him off and cut that expectation short.
One thing I love about this series is that, in such a primal world before politics and society, we are shown who Humanity is at its core. Both its capacity for goodness and wickedness. There is the need to survive, the temptation to be cruel, the compulsion to be kind.
Gotta say, I was expecting like a supernatural fight and chase and witchy stuff killing blablabla but it turned out sooooo good making it so sad and beautiful, like, it's been a looooong time since I've seen something... Mmm...happy? You know what I mean
FINALLY started watching Primal. Absolutely worth the hype but, as a father, I can't tell you how hard that pilot in particular hit me. And not a single word was uttered too. Really amazing show so far
First we saw Plague of Madness which was either the grossest or scariest episode in the series, now we see an episode that had to be the saddest one in the series. But then again, Plague of Madness seemed to be a little bit like Cujo, the started off good at first, but then was bitten and turned rabid, just like what happened to the dinosaur. And once the dinosaur was killed, Spear felt sorry for it and felt he may have actually put it out of its misery. Just like they had to do with Cujo in the end.
This was the saddest episode of any show with no dialogue I’ve ever seen. That nice witch was so brave and the episode did a real good job making me feel sorry for her. I only wish they could’ve killed that evil leader in the group. I hope they go back to them in a future episode to avenge the death of the witch that helped them escape as well as all the innocent people that were sacrificed. That coven needs to be extinguished.
I finally got to watch Primal and it's amazing !!! I really loved it, and watched it because of your reviews! Thank you very much!!! I love you Alteori
I kind of wish Lula had joined Spear and Fang on their adventures. But I guess the reason Genndy decided not to let her join them was because she was just to overpowered. Primal is a show about surviving with the odds against you and having a magical being on your side is kind of unfair. Plus who knows if she even had a choice to leave the coven.
you are a great speaker and story teller, I just found your channel and just want to prematurely urge you to explore and grow into more subjects that you enjoy. Its fun to watch bc we as the audience can feel your passion. thank you, and keep on going!!!
Think its possible that the reason why the witch was going to go with the ritual anyway was because it was reincarnation. Maybe she had plans to take spear's reincarnated self into her own, and give spear a better second life, and redeem her failure... But then the butterfly appeared. An omen telling her that this is not what her child wanted her to do anymore. Another detail you might have missed is that it wasn't a 'no second chance' thing at all. Her behavior when we first see her shows that it is guilty and shame that is keeping her from participating in the ritual. She doesn't see herself worthy of second chance considering the fate of her prior child.... It kinda shows that inspite of the grotesque nature of these rituals, they are genuine caretakers.
I my self went aww like u did after seeing this poor little Witch basically being an outcast for losing her child and it getting killed by accident. Also Fangs babies hatching made my heart sink as we knew they werent gonna be around in a few mins :C
I just watched this episode. It broke my heart. I cant believe this show made me feel such heartbreak for this little witch. This is officially in my top favorite animated series of all time. This episode clinched it
Another thing I like about this show... They have a realistic take on how someone would react to the unknown... For as badass as Spear and Fang are, this one was a situation where, yes they could've gone Rambo on their asses... But... The chances of winning were too slim to risk it, running was the best option they had and that's what they tried, this makes even more sense now that they've already gotten one to many close calls with death.
9:37 I think that, since Lula (the good witch) is seen repeatedly on the outskirts of the coven, that the other witches seem to regard her with disdain and hostility, that when she was given the child in the first place, the way she had to warn off the other women just to keep her indicates that they may not have thought that she was fit to care for a child, and then when her daughter fell and died, they took that as absolute proof, and so she is now never to be entrusted with the responsibility of raising a baby ever again.
im cry with you, your review whas deep and a good analysis, and yes indeed it was a sad and emotional unexpected event, sad but also emotional beutiful....
Oh shit i didn't even realize that the guy got turned into a girl. Thing is they weren't trying to kill spear at all. They wanted him to repeat the ritual and create another life. I feel like the idae is that the cavemen are being reincarnated through this ritual. that baby IS the caveman reborn. But yea, that thing ISN'T one of the witches at all. Its 'human' form is lacking facial features entirely, unless it wishes to communicate.
I am tearing up again do to this show. Such powerful feeling to this show and a show with out words and it ends up being more sad than many movies and tv that does have words.
I'm so glad I landed on your channel and followed you otherwise I wouldn't have known about this show. I love your reviews and your channel. You explain things so well and your funny. That is all I got 🙃
The most heart breaking scene in the whole episode to me is when the witch visits herself in the past. When she runs up to herself and screams, trying to warn herself even though it's of no use and it's just a recorded moment in time that can't be changed... that made my throat clench up...
This episode absolutely shocked me. I wasn't expecting this one to be so emotional. Primal has been nailing it lately. This episode and Plague of Madness were absolutely bangers. Not to say any of the episodes before hand have been bad. No far from it. These two episodes though really show the true potential of this series and I look forward to seeing what is to come in the future. So glad Adult Swim took a chance on this.
Hahahah Oh god When I first saw this, I thought “oh no Alteori is gonna be hit with the feels!” I was expecting action! Not this heartbreak! QAQ Edit: One of the things I also noticed was that the other witches with their own babies seem to shun our witch because she didn’t keep an eye on her child Resulting in the child’s death And that for a parent (not me, I’m not a parent, but in general for parents), even a split second could mean life or death for your child especially in the world Primal is set in
I really enjoy your primal episode reviews. I also like how your cat avatar moves it head and swishes the tail every now and then. When i saw the Wendigo lady give the baby to one of the witches, i was 100% sure they were going to eat it and was ready to turn my head.
When I watched this whole episode, I think I felt like crying on the inside. I liked Lula and when I saw what she went through I felt so bad for that poor woman.

I watched it just before I turned in and needless to say it stayed with me for a long time afterward. Having known loss during this pandemic it struck me to my core and I awoke to my own weeping. Oddly, I felt much better for it, and despite my better reasoning hold onto bit of hope for my own reunion.

Anyway, great episode and a marvelous way of humanizing what should’ve been a one dimensional throwaway character.

When she heard Spear the first time she was trying to resist the spell
Of course she knows she was being controlled.
What does the snake mean ?
Damn, this episode almost made me drop a tear into my eyes. This show nailed it.
Actually tears fell from my eyes.
I know I was expecting a lot more action but it was very emotional. I was expecting spear and fang to run around and kick ass like they usually do but I still liked it shows how good of a writer Genndy Tartakovsky is that he took such a risk with this episode and people still loved it
You know Genndy Tartakovsky is a dude right?

This episode hit me hard ...kinda like Spear taking a tail whip from Fang during there escape
3:17, that's was it is, his Lifeforce, whom they consume to create life.
His seed , yes.
A few thoughts:
- This is saddest episode to date.
- I like how the show is escalating the danger with Spear and Fang forced to run instead of fight.
- I don't think we've seen the last of the coven.
When Spear started screaming in anguish when he saw that Fang was under the Witch's control, that just broke my heart.
At the end of this episode it was so sad and cute I love this episode
it was sad, spooky and oh so good, I'm loving this series, so much emotion without even talking.
my dad died last year and this episode got me thinking about him and I was literally uncontrollable sobbing.
1:40, yes, I was expecting something like that, too.
A theory of mine is that man that was being sacrificed is a descendant of the Scotsman for Samurai Jack.
@murauder captain fearless solaris atheen i think there are some theories floating around that say the black water is Aku's essence.
@@enigmaticmind4450 Soooo wait, Dexter's Laboratory (I say this for a reason), Samurai Jack, and Primal are in the same universe?
There's this moment when Lula is looking at Spear's past, seeing him hold his child up to the sun to warm him. She's smiling, but then she realizes what must be coming and her smile fades. I thought that was one of the best parts of the episode.
Just the episode, tuned in for action was not expecting feels, serious I actually cried during all the flashbacks moments and bald my eyes out at the end. You don’t expect from an animation only 20 minutes long for such character development and getting attached to a nameless one time character it was just wow
Just seeing the witch reunited with her daughter in Heaven made me shed a tear.
5:03 had me laughing when I wasn't expecting it lol "LOOK THIS THING IS SPYING ON US, OUR SACRED STUFF, ITS WATCHING US GIVE BIRTH KILL IT!!!"
You know that ending of this episode really hit me hard it is so beautiful to see the witch finally reunited with her child, it was a beautiful sight to see, Genndy Tartakovsky you have done it again.
So many shows and movies nowadays don't display the amount of emotion this show does. Imo primal is a masterpiece.

Mammoths: *sad trumpet noises*
this episode made me cry.
I cried seeing all of them losing their families, I didn’t think this episode you’d turn out to be emotional and dark, I did expect spear and fang to fight all the witches to the death but I loved this outcome
It was supposed to say “would” damn auto correct

The situation was definitely dire

Something tells me that those ladies are like some type of skin walkers. They can take form of a deer like creature, people with antlers or even other animals. But skin walkers don't teleport, they have super speeds, but they do use a little bit if dark magic.

Doctor strange: YOU COPY MEH!!
The reason that spear just lived with his family seems to be that he was a Neanderthal not a homo sapien.
Homo sapiens were weaker and lived in larger groups.
Neanderthals typically lived in smaller family groups.
8:30, they both lost their families and endured so much hardship and pain.

This is easily the most emotional episode of Primal, seeing both Spear’s and Fang’s past just hit me right in the Feels(Fangs especially), and learning of the Witch’s past even more heart wrenching.
When the witch got reunited with her daughter in the afterlife got my tear ducts going overtime
I saw this episode this morning on DVR and it's is quite sad.
i just remembered in some cultures snakes represent fertility. thats why the snake was in this episode
Gotta say, I was expecting like a supernatural fight and chase and witchy stuff killing blablabla but it turned out sooooo good making it so sad and beautiful, like, it's been a looooong time since I've seen something... Mmm...happy? You know what I mean
This entire episode has Aku's sound effects especially the witch.
"Taste the sweetness, breath for breath.
Keep the balance, death for death."
- Barrow witch incantation

You forgot to mention that when the magic control on Fang is gone, the both of them mourn for the good witch for a brief moment before running off!
Great episode!
you are a great speaker and story teller, I just found your channel and just want to prematurely urge you to explore and grow into more subjects that you enjoy.
This episode clinched it
I haven't watch this yet, but you explaining it, makes me really wanna cry.
when spear saw that other caveman scream he looked like wtf
Another thing I like about this show... They have a realistic take on how someone would react to the unknown... For as badass as Spear and Fang are, this one was a situation where, yes they could've gone Rambo on their asses... But... The chances of winning were too slim to risk it, running was the best option they had and that's what they tried, this makes even more sense now that they've already gotten one to many close calls with death.
Fang and Spear are indeed powerful, but the two aren't stupid. They KNOW when they're outmatched and that's the most realistic thing in the show
Just watched this one ... I just wanted to hug the nice one, she’s with her baby girl now 😭😭😭
Love you Alteori 💙🐱💙
9:37 I think that, since Lula (the good witch) is seen repeatedly on the outskirts of the coven, that the other witches seem to regard her with disdain and hostility, that when she was given the child in the first place, the way she had to warn off the other women just to keep her indicates that they may not have thought that she was fit to care for a child, and then when her daughter fell and died, they took that as absolute proof, and so she is now never to be entrusted with the responsibility of raising a baby ever again.
honestly, the cat animating in time with her voice is one of my favorite things ever. I'm subbing
I’ve never watched this show just bits and pieces on RUclips and I’ve never cried so much from a show
im cry with you, your review whas deep and a good analysis, and yes indeed it was a sad and emotional unexpected event, sad but also emotional beutiful....
I was expecting some badass moments but this episode is the best one for me
This episode nearly brought me to tears. It is a fantastic episode of a fantastic show!
This comes with a perfect story warning
This episode absolutely shocked me. I wasn't expecting this one to be so emotional. Primal has been nailing it lately. This episode and Plague of Madness were absolutely bangers. Not to say any of the episodes before hand have been bad. No far from it. These two episodes though really show the true potential of this series and I look forward to seeing what is to come in the future. So glad Adult Swim took a chance on this.
The wendigo thing is called the shamanka
Man never thought a silent episode would get me tearing
Hahahah
Oh god
When I first saw this, I thought “oh no Alteori is gonna be hit with the feels!”
I was expecting action! Not this heartbreak! QAQ
Edit: One of the things I also noticed was that the other witches with their own babies seem to shun our witch because she didn’t keep an eye on her child
Resulting in the child’s death
And that for a parent (not me, I’m not a parent, but in general for parents), even a split second could mean life or death for your child especially in the world Primal is set in
I really enjoy your primal episode reviews. I also like how your cat avatar moves it head and swishes the tail every now and then. When i saw the Wendigo lady give the baby to one of the witches, i was 100% sure they were going to eat it and was ready to turn my head.
7:26, aw the poor fox.😪😟
When I watched this whole episode, I think I felt like crying on the inside. I liked Lula and when I saw what she went through I felt so bad for that poor woman.
I was this close to shed a tear.. Genndy knows how to place the right bowl of onions for the fans.
She is with her daughter again.😢
