Just our commercial herd consists of an impressive 1,300 breeding cows, 530 two-year-old heifers, 550 year-old heifers, and 200 year-old bulls currently undergoing veld tests. We also have 80 two-year-old bulls that have passed the test, hand-selected by legendary cattleman Barry Simmons and Rustin Shawe. Altogether, we’re managing 3,500 head including a Droughtmaster stud on the highveld of Northern KZN, between Wakkerstroom and Utrecht. Our cattle thrive at altitudes between 1,600 and 2,250 meters, with annual rainfall between 800 and 900 mm.
As a third-generation farmer, my family has been in this business for nearly a century, focusing on integrity, fertility, and quality. Grassfields is all about transparency. We share our knowledge with both commercial and emerging farmers and are upfront about our breeding operations, ensuring our customers make informed decisions.
We stick to a 100-day breeding season with a remarkable 80% conception rate in the first 60 days and over 90% in 100 days. Fertility is key to our success!
