374. That’s the number of days sweet Malakai called the hospital his home. He was diagnosed with VACTERL, an acronym for a series of birth defects. But his case was among the most severe due to a series of complications during surgical procedures in his home state. When he arrived at NCH, Malakai was experiencing multiple organ failure, sepsis and his bowels were bursting out of his body. Our Center for Colorectal and Pelvic Reconstruction ultimately saved his life. Our team spent two days in the operating room reconstructing Malakai’s bowels. Then, a long recovery as our team waited for the skin to heal around his abdominal wall. During his hospital stay, Malakai learned out to sit up, how to crawl and eventually walk. I knew someone who has this and I do know in their case they were driniking and doing drugs which may have affected it. The child was an unplanned accident at a bad time in their life. The mom now will need to help her child for the rest of her life and deal with that decision to not care for herself properly. Prayer to God helps them through this.
I just gave birth to my daughter yesterday and found out today she have a VACTERL. My heart so broken…
