Thing is, if someone worked for their music and not focused on the fame, its not just old timers who would appreciate them. Real art is timeless and get into all people, all generations...which is why of course, they always have the biggest fan base. To the young and upcoming..think "integrity'...be true to yourself. It will take longer, but you will create something more vivid and true, and only you yourself will know when that moment has arrived. And the power of it, will be far beyond what you ever though in your earlier years, was possible.
That moment when you realize that all those calisthenics you've been practicing on are "not bad". But - can you "makem' cry". Can you makem' feel something with emotional empact. That's what they will remember. A lot of gunslingers can draw fast and fire a bunch of shots, but how many hit the target are really the only ones that count. One of the best music movies ever made.
There's is a lot of truth in Eddie's lesson. I've spent the last few days hearing the second riff in my head. So I had to come back and listen again. Thank you for posting!
There is a lot of truth in this. I admire the intricate lead, but watching back after more than 5 years the simpler lead line was what I still remembered.
It does man. Eddie’s chords flow with the track as opposed to Rick’s that work against it. Michael , as Eddie, sells it by the way he facially engages with the rhythm of what he’s playing. His take has that real “longing for years gone by“ emotion. The tortured artist persona. Eddie Wilson felt like an amalgam of all those great 60s and 70s artists like Jim Morrison. Artists who were ahead of their time yet completely misunderstood. For Eddie it’s always about the music first and the artist second. Eddie really gives that Yoda like feel to his advice to this kid. This is a guy that’s been around the block and has been through the worst of the worst, and sometimes failure is a better teacher than success.
If there ever was an opportunity to read what some of my thoughts about this movie meant to tell me, i just did. I could never have broken down what i felt about this movie until i read your comment. Its brought clarity to me. Thank you.
One thing that’s admirable but Eddie Wilson is that he doesn’t give a shit about fame or the money. Yes those are secondary and very attractive but he cares about the music. Giving it a voice. Making sure that it defines him and not the other way around. What do you want to do was perfect it and make it sound so unique and so memorable that it holds you. And I totally get how his and ricks styles different. Rick is all flash and focus on the Pham and entertaining an audience. Eddie is all about conveying a story and letting the music speak for itself. It takes a long time to find that balance in any craft and this kid is in such a rush to get his face on MTV or whatever venue he has mind that he’s not focusing on the song or the story he conveys with his guitar.
I so want to hear the full version of that guitar. It just makes me close my eyes and role my head to the tranquil rhythm. This short clip is the best part of the movie. In my opinion, the music on #2 far surpasses the first movie and John Cafferty is a GREATLY unrecognized musical talent.

Great scene. They could've made it obvious by making the kid do a wanker solo, but his shredding is actually really good. But 5 minutes after watching this clip I found myself humming Eddie's solo, not remembering anything about the kid's except that it was pretty good like Eddie says. You want to know some great under-appreciated solos, listen to The Cars. Their guitarist will never be remembered as a blazing fingered virtuoso, but damn if every last one of us doesn't remember his solo for "Just What I Needed" note for note.
Your right about Elliot Easton. All of his solos are like little stories by themselves within the bigger story of the song. Live footage here on RUclips of the Cars playing Touch and Go and the audience always cheering after Easton playing his guitar solo is so cool.

The "Just What I Needed" solo is pretty good, but I actually prefer the "Shake It Up" solo even more. It's probably not cool to say that because "Shake It Up" was frowned upon by a lot of people who thought it was just a dance-pop sell out. (Doesn't change the fact that the solo is awesome.)

Apparently to really grasp the gravitas of this moment, you need to have already watched the first film, which is set in the early 1960's, and then this sequel, set in the late 1980's.

Except the "solo" if you want to call it that, that Eddie is playing is as emotionless and sterile as Rick Diesels, just slower. They could have gotten a better player to fill that void for the song.
Everyone is arguing over "this riff vs that riff"... Both parts were played by the same person. One is just more melodic, while the other is more flashy. A good guitar player could solo over this thing a hundred different ways and people could argue all day on which one is "the best" but it all just comes down to personal taste.

I disagree. I have heard too many flashy guitarists running scales and basically what they do is pretty much forgettable. Then you take someone like Samantha Fish who has a great ear for what sounds great but who does her "flashy" guitar work in moderation and you have some great music. Steve Vai is "Rick" and Samantha Fish is "Eddie".

Love this scene, but it makes me laugh when I remember Eddie saying "not bad" about Wordman's efforts to pitch "On the Darkside" in the first film. Thought it would be funny, and wish I had the know how , to fan edit this response into the first film!
One more of my favorite videos. It teaches you something. Some people have a talent and want to be the "show-off", instead of developing a great skill. Never think that because you think you can do something, someone can't teach you how to do it better, or educate you how to be better at it. Never be the "know it all". Never be so stuck on yourself that you think you are too good to learn from someone better than you.
When Eddie plays his melodic version with the "doo wop" cords in the back ground, The director really should have eased up on the compression and digital delay. A "doo wop" tune (C-Am-F-G) should be played with (dare I say) a forgotten ingredient called "Tone". You remember; Warm tubes and the 2nd position on the 5 way switch. This is a more profound clip than it would appear. I think this is the kind of situation that inspired Eric Clapton's "Slow hand". SRV used to get "Giddy" when BB King would do the twill with ONE NOTE. On the other hand, you've got G3. I admire Yngwie, Vai and Satch but I think both Satch and Steve found that the songs that resonated with the public (not aspiring guitarist/shredders) were melodic tunes like "Liberty" and "For Love of God". Satch learned the same lesson when he released "Always with me" & "The Crush". The public is simple minded. Don't believe me? Just ask Barry Manilow's manager.

Love this scene, but it makes me laugh when I remember Eddie saying "not bad" about Wordman's efforts to pitch "On the Darkside" in the first film. Thought it would be funny, and wish I had the know how , to fan edit this response into the first film!

One more of my favorite videos. It teaches you something. Some people have a talent and want to be the "show-off", instead of developing a great skill. Never think that because you think you can do something, someone can't teach you how to do it better, or educate you how to be better at it. Never be the "know it all". Never be so stuck on yourself that you think you are too good to learn from someone better than you.
When Eddie plays his melodic version with the "doo wop" cords in the back ground, The director really should have eased up on the compression and digital delay. A "doo wop" tune (C-Am-F-G) should be played with (dare I say) a forgotten ingredient called "Tone". You remember; Warm tubes and the 2nd position on the 5 way switch.
This is a more profound clip than it would appear. I think this is the kind of situation that inspired Eric Clapton's "Slow hand". SRV used to get "Giddy" when BB King would do the twill with ONE NOTE. On the other hand, you've got G3. I admire Yngwie, Vai and Satch but I think both Satch and Steve found that the songs that resonated with the public (not aspiring guitarist/shredders) were melodic tunes like "Liberty" and "For Love of God". Satch learned the same lesson when he released "Always with me" & "The Crush". The public is simple minded. Don't believe me? Just ask Barry Manilow's manager.
