Great foam bettle pattern. I wish you were right about terrestrial season soon upon us...we are still getting snow. 🫤 Thanks for sharing, Matt. Have a great day.
Good Morning Sir Matt, This fat headed Beetle looks great and I'm sure fun to tie. I can't wait to get to my vise and give it a try. Wait a minute did I make a rhyme😅😂😊. Thank you so much, alot to do these next few weeks Graduation 🎓 time is upon us. Until next time my friend.
Like a lot of other folks here, I go to your channel first for inspiration. I plan to give this one a try next. I find your videos to be really helpful and I like how you’ve got them organized. Super easy to browse and find something new to try
I watch RUclips . First one I found was scitying I believe he only put out about a dozen videos but it was start to finish most of the techniques you need to learn to tie flies . Then I found your channel and you’ve taught me the rest , I have watched a few others of course but as far as tying goes I like you style of instruction so thank you
So many comments, so little time. Lots of RUclips, Fly Tier magazine, books and folks I meet on the water all provide inspiration for me. But watching and pausing RUclips videos while tying is hard to beat. Thanks Matt. I still gotta wet my Delta Wing Caddis. Tom T from NJ
Great looking fly Matt, I love me some foam terrestrials of all sorts, I was thinking about tying me some pink grasshoppers for about the last month and lo and behold, last week a girl on recess at school in Mountain Home, Arkansas, found a rare pink colored grasshopper, still going to tie some. Fat head beetle looks good, easy to tie and varies other colors to use. Got to get back to chasing the turkeys while having a lull in the action this morning, had to take short break to watch your video, later my friend.
I use a number of RUclips fly tying subscriptions; yours, Brian from the Ozarks, Tightline with Tim Flagler , Barry Ord Clarke, Backwater Flies and Orvis with Tom Rosenbauer. I also have a number of fly tying books, not as many as you!, for patterns. I always enjoy your channel.
Hey Matt☕️☕️ Hope all is going well, just got in from NC last night. It got down as low as 29° in the mornings. I was not prepared for that. I have some good books I use from time to time. But I guess RUclips has spoiled it for me in some way. And helped tremendously in others. But you can’t beat the books like Gary LaFontaine and some of the books you review they are just Classic. Here lately I have been settling on just a few bugs that I have tremendous confidence in. Things that I believe that will work just about anywhere I go. Like the ant it is so over looked and can be made in so many different ways and the beetle for that matter. Or maybe I am just slowing down whatever it may be I just want to be that beat I can be and enjoy what I do. You have been a tremendous access and so glad our paths have crossed 👍
Nice tie Matt! I watch several other tiers, but most of my inspiration comes from watching you. Always enjoy watching you tie. You explain the techniques very well, and show how to work out the little messups. Thanks Matt 👍.
Why, I go straight to the Savage Flies Channel of Course.. I also like to get a book like Mary Orvis Marbury's Favorite Flies and randomly pick a page and tie the first fly I see. Sometimes I'll change up the colors or materials to experiment a little.
Where do I go for inspiration? To you, of course! I watch a lot of other RUclips fly tyers, as well, but I love the format of your channel and the way your personality comes through your videos.
Morning Matt. That is a good fly to have and yes they are for all species of fish and snakes. That's another story. I toast beetles for small mouth bass. I like the library. Thanks for showing us and yes, a little envious. Hope you get out on the water soon.
More recently you are my first go to, Tim Flagler at Tightline Productions, Cheech at Fly Fish Food and then just random tyers here and there. Bass flies I go to Alvin Dedeaux’s site. Tim Cammisa has some nice ties as well.
Nice looking fat head beetle, I definitely need some of these You can never have too many beetles in your box I am a RUclips junkie, and I always enjoy watching a new fly being tied, learning new techniques, and getting inspired to come up with something new Thanks for the video, Matt, and yes, I have learned a lot from you
Wow, I remember that article. That beetle is a simple pattern, and there's quite a few, but I really liked the Fathead Moth. Thing is I had a hard time understanding the wing separation procedure from the step by step. The Moth reminded of skater patterns like David Lambroughton's Steelhead Skater or Craven's Screaming Banshee. I've subscribed to hundreds of tying and fishing channels. You tube and web/forum pretty much makes up most of my info gathering for the past ten years. Prior to that it was strictly print - books and magazines, TV, and even that dinosaur the local newspaper. I still rely on print, but RUclips/internet is convenient. Matt, your channel inspires me especially on history. Thanks!
That certainly is a fat head. I’ll have to see if I still have that issue & see what other terrestrials are shown in the articleI somehow forgot terrestrials on my to-do list. Duh! Thank you for bringing this one up. Ironically, I’ve been going through my magazines to decide on ones to store by my desk & which ones to put in the basement. Like you, I use the magazines for inspiration & pattern recipes as well using as books & videos. Interestingly, sometimes the older writings have drawings which can more readily help show certain techniques that are almost impossible to demonstrate on camera. For example, seating the wings on Mike Lawson’s No Hackle Dry requires the tyer to pinch the wing slips against the hook, & the pinch & thread wraps are always obscured by the tyer’s fingers. Mike explained it well in the video, but the process wasn’t clear until I saw a line drawing showing the wing & thread wraps under the dotted line fingers in an old magazine. Re: 1XL? Do you mean 2XL?
Good morning Matt. ☕️time. Neat looking beetle. I have been looking at those cutters for shaping foam but I’m second guessing my need for them especially when I see beetles, ants and hoppers that a made without the use of them. Like todays pattern a number aren’t terribly difficult to create with scissors or a cutting blade. This is beetle pattern I want to try this spring, I think it will be good. Mostly my ideas come from videos like yours, or from club members and of course my book/ magazine collection. Our recent snow is just about gone and the temps are climbing. We were close to 50F yesterday. Won’t be long now and the ice will be off the lakes. Take care Matt. Have a great week.
I also watch a lot of RUclips and have a few books to learn and get some inspiration. I enjoy watching you because I learn from you as well Matt. I like the new (to me anyway 😅) beetle pattern. Keep doing what your doing and I’ll keep watching! Thank you Matt!
Fantastic pattern and for sure a fish catcher. As for inspiration, I personally look at Instagram, RUclips and if nothing jumps out at me, I'll turn some pages in my library, not as extensive as yours but I'm always working on that. Thanks Matt for sharing and have a awesome week.
Hey now Matt its been a minute how are you doing.... how i find out what to tie you tube, books or the creek we fish and see what is in the water or go down to the fall line in the James River 🤔 thanks for all you do sir
Hi Matt. Nice little bug and I like the background music. Where do I go for inspiration? After I decide on a fly type, I'll go to your playlist tab first (really, I do) and see what you have to offer. I like the way you approach the tie and your explanation is always easy to follow. Thanks for all the input you have had in my fly tying.
for inspiration I do you tube, as of late looking at patterns from Europe / England see anther view. Also redo old paters for fishing conditions I run into and new materials that have come available.
I've got a lot of books and sometimes I just page through looking for something that inspires me. I enjoy You Tube videos and get so many tips from people like you and Tim Flager, Charlie Craven, and the guys at Fly Fish Food. There is something about watching tying videos that is relaxing for me.
Nice tie! Looks like it could do double duty as an ant pattern. Curious as to what kind of foam you are using here. It looks to be softer than the normal craft foam. Thanks.
You got me excited for beetle season! I get inspiration from taking pictures of bugs, books, youtube, but my favorite thing to do is just create individual art. Im not the best at following rules and my bugs are very non traditional. Its fun to just sit down and build something from imagination. I have lots to learn but im having fun! Thank you Matt! Tight lines, Steve
I'm with you there Steve! Playing around and using our imagination is one of the most fun things we can do. In fact, I'm taking an entire arsenal of experimental flies down to the Smoky Mountains and just going to see how they do. :-)
Man that’s a good question? My inspiration comes from all over. Probably books mostly. You are a great inspiration my friend. But ideas many times just pop up at the vice. 😂 I’ve slowed some on the antique journals..fixing to finally get out of 1932.😄 I really love those old stories, snakes, beaver, muskrats etc. on top of fishing. Just the history is fascinating. I wish my local area had these types of records. But really enjoy them nonetheless. Thanks for everything Matt! 👍👍🎣ps love that beetle. My modified yellow Llano bug is a lot like it. Very rare that it doesn’t catch lots of perch and some bass. 👌
You, of all the RUclips fly tying channels, is my greatest inspiration. I often wonder about using crystal flash for legs on terrestrials. (Flash and possibly the illusion of segmentation?) I'm going to give it a try.
I go to Savage Flies, Kelly Galloup, Brian Wise (Flyfishing the Ozarks) and Gunnar Brammer. Just those keep me pretty busy. Regarding this fly I'm sure it will work on trout but I also think it would be lots of fun on a 2 or 3 wt. for bluegill. As for colors I guess anything will work but a dark iridescent green to imitate Japanese Beetles might be cool if you can find the right foam. Keep the good stuff coming.
I watch two fly shops youtube channels(they are online shops.Risen has a store front, not sure about the other) one is RISEN Fly(they are local to me) and Lively Legz/Living4theoutdoors(also a Pa fly shop). Your channel, Fly Tyer Magazine, Louisiana Blackwater Fly Fishing, McFly Angler, Natives Fly Fishing, Not Only Trout, tightlinevideo and scflytying. These are all youtube channels.
Terrestrials are my favorite!
Thanks for staying classy Matt!
That’s a cool fly I watch your channel Matt you’re the go to person for me
You, Barry Ord Clark, and Books. Nice beetle. Thanks Matt
Thanks Matt! Appreciate the view of your library too.
Nice beetle bug matt😊
Nice bug. Looks like I need a few of those in my box.
Great foam bettle pattern. I wish you were right about terrestrial season soon upon us...we are still getting snow. 🫤 Thanks for sharing, Matt. Have a great day.
Now that gives me inspiration. If that beetle isn't a fish catcher then I need to hang my rod back on the wall. Great pattern Matt.
No such thing as a book nerd.....................we are book aficionados. Nice tie as well as a nice tie. 👍🇺🇸
Just as you started out this demonstration with. Love RUclips and books. Love this little foam beetle. Thx Matt.
Very cool looking beetle pattern Matt.something different.very nice as always thanks.
For fly ideas, Instagram and books. I collect very few things, but fly fishing books is the main one. Old and new.
That is neat looking fly. Almost looks like a bumble bee.
I go to your channel for my fly tying inspiration awesome fly
Gidday Matt. My learning inspirations come from chanels like yours. Your book collection is amazing, I only have a couple of books. Thanks.

@@jeffjackson5331 Will do Jeff and thank you you too
@@tubbyguyoutdoors you are very welcome brother! Will do!
Nice pattern Matt, I mostly look to iTunes for my new patterns. I must have a list of 50 patterns in my phone that I plan to tie.

Nice job. Last year I tied a whole bunch of foam body flies. But not this one. :) So now I'm inspired.

Cool looking beetle bug. Thanks Sir Matt for the summer bug pattern. I think the bass and panfish are going to hit this fly. Have a Great week.

UTC 70 is likely to cut the foam, would recommend UTC 140 / 6/0 thread. At least I cut foam but I’m not as skilled. Great fly!!

A terrific beetle fly that draws fish in to strike. Black works amazingly well.

I tied two. One on a 1xl and one on a 2xl. I thought the 2xl looked better and was easier to tie.
