I love that he just keeps progressing as an artist. His playing is cleaner, tighter, and more expressive than ever, and he manages to both honor the roots of bluegrass while also pushing the envelope in new and interesting ways. And I swear his voice is improving as well!

Just check out youtube for the amount of 10 year olds and teens that can shred like there's no tomorrow. However, technical proficiency doesn't automatically mean good musicanship.

Could I have been better with some internet lessons and seeing all them play? Sure! But I know after hours and endless days and nights of practice, I'd have never been a William Apostol or any of those dudes up their with him. I can name about five. These days, who I listen to, all their names start with Billy and end with Strings! utterly amazing.

So much respect! Hearing this beautifully haunting old Monroe instrumental performed to such tasteful perfection by these amazing young guys who can go as far out on a limb as they want, but keep everything so true to tradition when it's called for, is a revelation. Big Mon would be proud to know his music is in such capable young hands 27 years after his death.
Although I love Billy,,the banjo guy kicks ass right along with Billy,,I love to watch him pick, and I played bass with JD Crowe for four years and Keith Whitley for eight years!

And so is the rendition by Billy Strings (in white suit and cowboy hat) and his incredible musicians (in blue suits and cowboy hats). Billy’s microphone stand bears his name. While watching the video, I truly believe that Bill Monroe, Lester Flatt, Earl Scruggs, Mac Wiseman, Jimmy Martin, and Roy Acuff are smiling down from heaven.

I told him right before he went on the road first time to enjoy himself that feeling will never come again. His skill is astonishing. I'm enjoying some old Leon at the moment. No space or time enough for all of the greats I hope those stringers stay together .

Never was a Blue Grass fan, but these cats can f*cking bring it, man! Prog Grass is what I’d coin this. Innovative and refreshing. Fundamentally, what’s difficult to overcome in BG, is the lack of drumming and time signatures associated with that. Considering such, most songs end up sounding identical. Still, they’ve got my ears and attention. Mad respect! BTW, Billy Strings has an album in the works with Les Claypool. Yeah, THAT!
Billy playing "Freeborn Man" is like Prince playing "While My Guitar Gently Weeps". A big step forward on the foundations laid by Rice and Clapton. Good stuff.

My favorite version has always been by the southern rock band The Outlaws. Their version was sang by Henry Paul. Henry went on the form the country band Blackhawk. Last I heard he’s a member of the Outlaws again and I may be wrong but I’m thinking he’s the only original member. Henry has a killer voice and sounds like nobody else. If ya haven’t heard their version, it’s definitely worth checking out
I was lucky enough to be at this show, and what a scorcher it was! The whole show is a bluegrass special on PBS now, too. I follow these boys all over the country, have seen them over 50 times and this is my FAVORITE Freeborn Man to date! Thanks for posting❤ I was too busy dancing in the pews to video anything lol
I've never heard of Billy Strings until this past weekend. Flew in for Tedeschi Trucks Band and heard Strings was in town and thought it would easy to pick a few tickets to see him..... I don't think so, he was SOLD TF OUT! Now, I know why! HOT STUFF!! WHEW!
This cat and his band are selling out everywhere!! Six shows in Denver metro this year and they still have to have ticket registration lotteries to keep the prices down.
Billy Strings and Molly Tuttle ARE NOT true Real Bluegrass artists. They, by their "woke" values are a cancer that is ruining Real Bluegrass. "Woke" and Real Bluegrass DO NOT belong together. He is a different genre than Real Bluegrass. He and his ilk will destroy Bluegrass the same way country music has been destroyed. Listen to the song "Murder on Music Row."
I love the way he goes from full-on bluegrass (including the clothes) to acid rock and wherever. Strings gives me hope for young people in music. And what a freaking great guitarist.
