  • More than a Backbeat: Diversity in writing styles, technique and performance in HBCU Marching Percussion
It may be assumed that Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) are a monolithic society but that is far from the truth. The diversity among HBCUs and their marching bands are wide ranging and inclusive of various influences. This is also true for the drumlines within these bands. “More than a Backbeat” is an opportunity for instructors from HBCU drumlines to discuss their approach to percussion arranging for their programs. The clinicians will breakdown techniques and styles traditional to their institution including scores, video and audio examples of how the groups execute the music. Members of this clinic will include Derrick Greene (Tennessee State University), Tim Greene (South Carolina State University), Elisha Powell (Virginia State University) and host Dr. Lamon Lawhorn (North Carolina A&T State University).
