In the first scene, Sozin caught Roku who almost fell over a tree, but eventually let him go. Like then, he came to help at the end, but he eventually abandoned Roku. Roku's dragon is a red symbol of Zuko, but Sozin's dragon is a blue symbol of Azula
Hello again so another detail about this episode I want to point out is: in the scenes where Zuko and Iroh are speaking the bars of the cell are never placed in front of Iroh however they are always placed in front of zuko. A way to show that Zuko is really the one who is confined/trapped within himself and Iroh is really the one who is free. That symbolism is also reinforced by the fact that Iroh was able to get the royal artifact smuggled into the jail, indicating that Iroh is choosing to stay in the jail in order to still help guide Zuko
Hi! Great point here. Zuko is certainly in deep conflict in this book and especially so during the scenes when he goes to speak with Iroh in his cell.
Yes! Also Sud the earth bending teacher of Roku was actually meant to be Aang's earth bending teacher. They changed their mind and created Toph so all of Aangs teacher can be teenagers. Sud is actually seen form the start of the show, he is the earth bender silhouette from the intro😊@MeeshDeeReacts

@@Team-nk6ulthere's a couple more reasons for that move. They also wanted to bring back Michaela Jill Murphy, Meng from the fortuneteller, to voice Toph. Lore wise, they also based her style of bending on Praying Mantis, which was invented by a blind woman
Iroh had the hairpiece because he was Azulon's firstborn, meaning he was crown prince -- the artifact was never passed down because iroh's son Lu Ten had passed, and Ozai robbed the birthright to become Fire Lord.
Avatar Roku lost the hairpiece to the volcano (you can see it rolling on the floor when flees his house), but I have seen reports (that are supposedly canon) that Roku's daughter had ordered the village excavated and the hairpiece found at some point.

This episode is one the best episodes of the entire show. I also think that at the end, Sozin really did try to help Roku, but like you said, Meesh, he saw an opportunity and took it. Sozin had never given up the idea of taking over the world, so he couldn't help himself.
The very last scene where Top asks the group "Do you really think friendships can last more than one lifetime?" makes me want to cry. I just love the friendship between all of them T^T

It seems like a very random scene, but it's actually a reference to Book One episode 7, "Winter Solstice, Part 1", when Sokka was taken to spirit world by Hei Bai. After he got released, Katara asked "how are you feeling", and Sokka answered "I seriously need to use the bathroom." 🤣

That last Toph line always makes me tear up.
For some reason Toph has a few lines throughout the show that always kinda choke me up. This was definitely one of them.

What makes me tear up is that both Toph and Katara befriended Korra. So their friendship with Aang really trenscended lifetimes
People keep missing this part where Azula mentions that he died “Peacefully” in his sleep. The fact is that he Didn’t ! He was Tortured to his deathbed. Knowing that the Avatar had eluded him , searching in Vain and NEVER found him . That just adds to the karma that Sozin deserved at the end. To be mocked by a little kid , wasting the remainder of his old life searching in vain and failed ! Love that ❤
I always get chills in That part where Aang was born and then Fire lord Zosin says: I speeded the rest of my life looking for the Avatar, “The last air Bender” That’s intense. About Zuko: there’s nothing to say, everything is clearer now. Let’s see what happens to him. ❤ Greetings from Brooklyn NY!

When you said “didn’t that girl kind of look like Aang?” There is actually a theory (that I think was confirmed) about the avatar and their loved ones during their lives also sharing certain features in future lives…but I don’t wanna say too much! 😅
Also, this episode was peak storytelling.

-During Roku's wedding, guests in blue and green clothing can be seen, representing the openness of the four nations before the War.
When Katara asks if the Spirit World has bathrooms, Sokka says it does not, which is something he found out in Winter Solstice.
I love this episode. Can you imagine this split friendship from Gyatsu's POV? Here is the Avatar, one of your best friends, though only visiting for a short time. Then he passes away, and you know it won't be long before you get to see him again. I wonder if he was able to recognize his friend in Aang before the revelation of his identity.
It was surprising how quickly Roku rejected Sozen's vision of the future, even though he considered him his best friend. It was as if the mere notion of it was an affront to his legacy, and it brought out the wisdom of the lives before him. Also, the utter beatdown of Sozen by Roku, leaving him hanging in the middle of the debris of his castle left me in awe. It's terrifying how cold the Avatars can be in defiance of an imminent threat, evident by Kyoshi's confession and Roku's death threat. Aang seems to be cut by a different cloth in that respect. Aang's faultless belief in people's ability to do good is just so inspiring.
The show has highlighted the parallels between Aang and Zuko in many subtle, and some not-so-subtle, ways, going all the way back to Book 1. It could be debated that while Aang is the show's protagonist, Zuko is actually the story's main character.
I think Roku kept trying to battle the volcano because eruptions and the fumes can reach far , so I think he was stopping it from reaching the mainland of the fire nation.
i believe Roku stayed to prevent the lava from flowing into the water close to the lifeboats. the lava might’ve heated up the water to a deadly temperature
true, he stayed so that the people could escape safely.
Roku's dragon shielding him with its own body and choosing to stay and perish with him will never fail to make me sad.
5:49 theres actually a theory that an Avatar takes the face (or atleast has a similar face) to their previous life's lover, in Aangs case its Rokus wife Ta min. And its true for Korra too.
Fun Fact: Zuko's name is written as 苏科 (sū kè) which is made up of the first and last characters of Sozin's (苏进; sū jìn) and Roku's names (洛科; luò kè) respectively.
There's a pretty cool parallel in the beginning and end of the story:
When Sozin and Roku were sparring at the beginning, Sozin caught Roku when he tripped over the tree root, but then decided to let him fall. Years later, Sozin came to help Roku stop the volcano, but then decided to leave him to die.
13:56 I think its because volcano eruptions usually lead to landslides and Tsunamis. And tsunamis can be a lot worse than an eruption because Firenation doesn't really have waterbenders. So roku probably thought stopping the volcano is the best way to go.
20:17 i agree with Meesh. Sozin went to help his best friend but when Roku was fallen on the ground all Sozin could see was the Avatar, the only thing holding him back.
So all in all this an amazing episode. The creators on a recent podcast said that They originally wanted to have this be a 2 parter but couldn't cause they only had 21 eps and no more. So they made it into 1 ep, which is kind of disappointing. We get to see the life of an Avatar but it's cut very short. And if they could've made this a 2 parter Sozins change could've felt a lot more natural.
If I had to say I'd probably put it this way:-
1/2 of part 1:young Sozin and Roku and Roku is announced Avatar
2/2 of part 1: Roku mastering the elements and growing into an Adult
1/2 of part 2: Sozin growing up to become the Firelord and his side of how he goes from just a kind guy to an Imperialist, which we don't get to see.
2/2 of part 2: Roku and Sozin reunion and the ending can be the same i think it's fitting.

The flashback episodes are always the best (The Storm, Zuko Alone, and The Avatar & The Fire Lord)
Roku stayed because he didn’t know if his wife and family were still there. Remember they got separated as they were running away. He had no idea that they had made it to some boats and were safe. 😢
This is personally my favorite episode because it's the first time I realized that the show is about Aang and Zuko. Everyone else is a side character as hard as it is to accept
There needs to be a prequel series that shows the lives of the 6 Avatars who came before Aang! I like how the novels and comics have given them more backstory but I want to see them in an actual show.
I like the theory that every Avatar trys to fix the mistakes of the past. Szesto mostly stayed in his home of the Fire Nation so Yangchen truly traveled the world but ignored the spirit world. The spirits got angry so Kurruk spent most of his time in the spirit world trying to stop them & doing little for the real world therefore Kyoshi took charge being extremely aggressive & hands on so therefore Roku became more of a "Let's talk not fight avatar" but did little to stop the Fire Lord's agressions which now brings us to Aang trying to clean up Roku's mistake.
so iroh had the crown because he was once the crown prince and his son was supposed to wear it to :(

The reason why Roku stayed was to buy the villages time to get away from the island. Flaming rocks flying out of the volcano, lava hitting the ocean and causing bigger waves and pyroclastic flows all remained threats to them. The boats were still floating very close to the volcano, the eruption of which was catastrophic enough to wipe them out. Roku knew he couldn't contain the volcano's energy, but he could redirect away from the boats.

Probably one of my favorite lines of the entire series.
I DO think Sozin was genuinely helping Roku until he saw how weak Roku was at that moment. Sozin knew he wouldn't be able to beat Roku from their previous fight, but the poisonous gas could do the dirty work. Sozin saw the glimmer of his goals being achievable.
Just like when Zuko decided to team with Azula in Ba Sing Se. The strong desire clouds everything else.
I honestly find it very cunning that Azula used Zuko's desire for their father's approval to sway him into siding with her because she knows that Ozai's love and acceptance was all that he ever wanted
Meesh is right about Sozin helping Roku. He was faced with a choice to either help Roku or betraying him right there in that moment. Just like Zuko was faced with a choice in Ba Sing Se to either help his sister or betray his uncle. He made a similar choice as his great grandfather
14:30 i get why people are confused why he stayed but in reality, vulcanic eruptions are deadly for many MANY miles around, or can be.
The people that are in the boats (assuming its even all of them already) cant possibly have gotten out of harms way in that short a timeframe yet.
One of my favorite actors ever has a cameo as Sozin. Ron Perlman. I didnt even recognize it the first time i watched this! Great episode and reaction!
I think you're right about Sozin - he did go to help, not just Roku but his Fire Nation subjects. Sozin is an imperialist who was clearly proud of his nation and this was a natural disaster that he had the power to help with. He is evil because he didn't value the lives of anyone not Fire Nation. And that makes him so very realistic. It's natural to like your own people. It's too easy to devalue others. Hence Iroh trying to impart that world vision back into Zuko. Balance & resepct.
That image of Sozin staring down at Roku though... what a chilling moment.

Aang isn't a fully realized avatar. People always compare Roku's 12 years to Aang's summer, but Aang's control of the elements are much weaker with the exception of air
As for Sozin, I do believe he went to help Roku. I think he just saw an opportunity when Roku went down and took it
Hey Meesh and Dee I hope you two day are going well. This was a great episode that focuses on Avatar Roku and Firelord Sozin story as they explain the two who started out as child hood friends and how their friendship ended. And the shocking revealation that Avatar Roku was Zuko great grandfather.
I like this episode because things like this do happen in real life. I can somewhat relate with Roku. You start out as friends with someone and as you two get older. You will begin to fall apart especially after not seeing them for some time and expecting them to be the same person as you knew them since you were kids. But anyway I hope you have a wonderful day. Fun fact for you guys, Sut Avatar Rokus Earth Bending teacher was intended to be Tophs original design but they later changed there minds to make Toph a blind little girl, through the inspiration of Star Wars when they introduced Yoda. By subverting expectations making the Earth Bending teacher seem like he/she was going to be very strong and used stereotypical weak traits and making Toph one of the most powerful characters in the series and using those traits as the reason why she is so powerful
Roku was trying to save hundreds of houses around the base of the volcano. Yeah, not a good place to build.
Sozin did go to genuinely help Roku. Because they were friends he couldn't kill his friend outright. Yes, he attacked before. But, he was younger and dumber. Plus, Roku, even after being attacked, spared his life. But, in a moment of weakness and resentment from their previous battle, Sozin let his friend die. I think he went off the deep end after that. He attacked the Air Nomads and then the rest of the world.
IROH: "Your father and mother's _other_ grandfathers were Sozin's brother and a cabbage farmer, respectively."
ZUKO: "Wait... wait what"
IROH: "But they aren't relevant to your destiny."
ZUKO: "Uhhhh okay?"
If you think about it, Roku had 12 years to master the elements and Aang only until the summer makes you realize how talented Aang really is. Roku's biggest mistake was that he spared Sozin and because of that war broke out and the air nomads got killed. Not once did Aang resent Roku because of that while most would blame everything on him! Zuko's mom really influenced him for the better because Azula is also related to Roku but she was heavily influenced by her dad.
Roku took this time because the situation was different. We don't know how he'd do if he was in Aang's situation.
Sozin position when ROku was weak, is the same position Zuko was at the end of Book 2,
He was conflicted and made a bad choice, you can hear in his testament that he's actually remorseful, he talks about his youngers days with Roku as Brighters.
Also I also think for how crazy his plan was, in a world like avatar, where destiny is a thing : Sozin Guenuinely though that him and Roku be so close was no coïncidence, and that they were destined to do great things , I assume he felt Betrayed when Roku refused him.
Sozin didn’t seem like a bad guy but his choice to commit genocide makes it hard for me to even read his name honestly. He was a monster in the end. The worst kind.
A full volcano explosion would affect the area for miles and miles! Just imagine Sozin could feel it 100 miles away

7:05: HA HA 🤣🤣 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 It looked like Aang was pooping but really he was getting on Roku’s Dragon and was stretching. Riding on a Dragon in that position for a long time is uncomfortable even in the Spirit World. Dragons have scales and their skin is not fury their skin is harder and scaly across of a Komodo Dragon and a Serpent Snake.
Maybe Roku didn't leave the volcano, because that is the only roku's house, Before Roku was being enemy of sozin, maybe he had a home live in the city of fire nation, but as you know Roku and Sozin became an enemy, so that's why Roku was trying to save his home in the volcano.
When I was kid, I always though that Roku did it all to keep the lava from killing those who escape in the boats including his wife
5:46 I couldn't find a credible source for this so, I don't know if there's any truth to it. But, some people have said that in Japanese folklore, when you're reincarnated, you look like the person your past life loved most. Again, I don't know how true this is, but it's cute ... especially when/if you get to Korra.
If didn’t know they have there own RUclips channel. Where they live stream certain episodes/ create content with their cartoon I would finish The Last Airbender bc some video will have spoilers for feature episodes and even from Legend Of Korra. Since I keep up with there channel occasionally I’ve heard rumors from people saying there coming out with series or movie for Kyoshi and Roku as well I believe it will explain their story I think avatar Kuruk could get a movie or series too. I don’t want to put there channel just because it’s wrong to self promote a channel in ur comments. But I’ve enjoyed watching most of ur reactions I’ve been catching up with y’all watching two video per day and eventually slowed down last week bc I’m getting to the end where u recently uploaded a video so I’m watching one per day now bc I’m trying to savor every reactions video of The Last Airbender

Why did Sozin become such a bad guy, he seemed like a decent guy when he was in his teens so what caused the change in him? According to TV Tropes in his final days Sozin came to realize (he regretted it) that he had only ended up bringing pain and suffering to the world. He also regretted turning his family and his nation into warmongers, and he was remorseful for what he did to Roku and the Air Nomads. He realized that his intentions may have been noble, but that he went about it in the wrong way. Unfortunately it was too late for him to atone for his mistakes, but it’s not too late for Zuko. Sozin was a broken and sad man who was filled with nothing but regrets.

The fact that Roku and Sozin share a birthday means that both of them were born after Kyoshi died... which means that there was a chance that Sozin would have become the Avatar instead of Roku. I wonder what could have happened if the crown prince of the Fire Nation became the Avatar... Maybe Sozin would never become a man that he ended up becoming, since he would travel to the other nations to learn the different bendings and realize the importance of balance. Maybe he would have used his position as Fire Lord to better keep the world in balance... or maybe he would have renounce his title in favor of his sister... Or maybe Sozin would still grow up to become the same power-hungry man and use his power as the Avatar to conquer the world... If the latter happened, one can be certain that the trust people had for the Avatar would be broken and most likely it would take lifetimes to restore it for the most part. So I think it was for the best that Roku was the one to become the Avatar.
