At the end of the day, still very much worth getting comics graded. But raw is awesome to. Just depends what your goals are. If you're in the resale game, much more potential when grading of course.
It’s so funny how on the invoice they even have a stamp of approval showing QC inspection. But then you notice obvious mistakes. I had a submission of six books all with the Miles custom label, yet one of them randomly had the secret wars 8 custom label. QC inspector approved!
I got my CGC signature submission back today and I agree 100000% I just submitted a 9.8 comic and it came back 9.6 because they didn’t feel like grading it correctly.
CGC is only the big company that it is because people still use them. Comic collectors use them because they were 1 of the first to grade comics and now they are slacking.
And this is why I purchase my books already slabbed so I don't have to worry about ahit like this. It might cost me more but saves me a ton in headaches and frustration. Well worth it to me.
I'd send in more books than I do if it weren't for the mistakes they make all the time. It causes anxiety when waiting for them to come back wondering what they'll get wrong next. 😅
I totally agree with that. I’ve only submitted twice and seen books with spine ticks get a 9.8 and books that are pristine even in the case after get a crazy 9.2. And submitting again only brings more money in for them.
I just checked and I had 15 signature series submissions since 10/21 and 4 of them had to be sent back for mechanical error (3 damaged, 1 odd plastic in the case). My biggest problem with CGC right now though is the inexcusably archaic billing. I have to keep a spreadsheet to track my submission cost vs what my CC actually gets charged and I recently found out I was double charged in April and I still have 2-3 charges that don't line up so I don't know what I'm actually being charged for. So now I'm going to have to call them and literally go through a year of billing with them to figure it all out. I just don't understand how billing this bad is even possible in 2022.
I knew something was up. I got charged 3 times by them for the same submission. The second billing I thought there were fees I didn’t know about, but the third time I knew something had to be wrong. I can’t seem to get a hold of them though.
Yep. Got charged twice because of somebody's else's order through my comic pressor. They told me twice it will be charged back. I had to call my CC company and file a dispute which I won
I can feel your frustration. All of this worries me for if I do ever submit any books, though I doubt I will ever do Signature series, as I don't really collect sigs. Thanks for sharing!
I just got a CGC book and the inner well that the comic sits in is slightly loose and has movement. They aren't using any secure tabs that I've seen in older cases. Have you seen this?
James, I feel your pain - very frustrating. I know you said it's minor but getting the comic to sit properly aligned within the holder is very important to me because it's the first thing I notice; and in fact yours is the second misalignment I've seen in two days on RUclips videos about comics. My prediction for the next CGC stuff-up is that they'll put the comic into the holder upside down. That would really make for a rare but unwanted collectable.
Good luck. Me I send books for the McFarlane signing. The books were at Sarasota postal office and then they disappeared. I had a hulk 340 9.6 to 9.8. 😢
I’m always tempted to send books in for sigs, but never do. For me, signatures lose their value if I wasn’t there to have that interaction with creator.
After having 2 submissions with perfect copies having only 10 of 25 and 1 of 11 come back with a 9.8 I have given up on CGC myself. I think I have solved the mystery of not having grader's notes for anything above a 9.0 though. They just don't know why it is the grade they give it and don't want to send the picture of the dart sticking in the dartboard at the grade it was given.
It definitely depends on the grader you get. My first grader wasn’t good, no notes and grading a 9.8 as a 9.2, and other perfect books as a 9.4. My most recent submission had perfect books, ones with spine ticks and such and all of them came back graded accordingly, consistently and even notes on ones that needed it. You kinda have to get lucky with who grades your books
I believe that there or two major issues…… Too many people in the hobby just for profit And corporate greed, they want all the profit and still use the minimal amount of staff or upgrade the conditions that the staff is in
Videos like this, scares the shit outta me, I found out about Signature Series in June (From Mint Hunter Comics) and I wanted to add to my collection because I do love signatures. These are the signatures I've gotten. Willem Dafoe, Tessa Thompson, Josh Brolin, John Romita Jr/Scott Hann/Zeb Wells, Todd McFarlane, Cobie Smulders, Benedict Cumberbatch, and I've recently bought 5 books for Hugh Jackman. I should get my dafoe books soon, but if I get problems like this I'll stop doing these signature series and will not renew my membership. I spend way too much money to get screwed around. BTW I rejoined PSA (For Cards) in September, Send a order of 228 cards, already came back graded. Meanwhile my first order Willem Dafoe back in August is still in the status "Scheduled for Grading" like every other order.
So sorry you've been through this. I really am beginning to feel the comparisons to PGX are becoming less a joke and like...actual. When I first started back collecting 5 years ago, I heard all the bad things about PGX. But honestly...between this stuff and CBCS misplacing books (not to mention the gigantic wait times) I'm not seeing that big of a difference.
I totally understand your frustration. No need to apologize. You were genuinely agitated. Makes me nervous once I finally send off anything to CGC. Hopefully they will get their act together. I've had to do the grunt work many times when it comes to billing or wrong product etc. over the years with other companies.
I thought it only gets signature series label if they watch it get signed? Otherwise it gets a qualified label? Sorry if a stupid question - just started collecting :)
I have seen some really nice individual plastic cases that you can put your grails in for protection. Why not agree on a grade of the book on a strict rubric like CGC does when selling them in person and keep your books safely at home and readable. Also save stress, cash, time and the disappointment of seeing a low inaccurate grade after all the trouble.
When comics are often graded inaccurately what is the point? For instance a lot of late 80s books go wavy due to the paper and printing process, look at your Web of Spider-Man issues after 50 or so, they will have wavy pages for sure. These waves can pressed out, comic graded 9.8 but I guarantee those will come in little while. Pressing works but always for good though
Yep! Similar thing has happnened to me. 2 books in for signing and they put the wrong labels in each book. It takes away from the whole experience of getting back something that you paid good money for, unboxing and being happy with the result. All of that is ruined.
Had a couple New 52 Batmans signed at SDCC that came back dated as signed in 2002 LOL (just about 10 years before the books existed). Then I did a SDCC drop off for a signing, they somehow did not get it signed, they shipped it up to NYCC, told me they didnt get it signed there either, then after some complaining the book comes back a few weeks later signed and dated for the SDCC signing date. And the grading is all over the place. Got a 8.0 on a book that is a solid 9.2, and a 9.8 on a solid 9.6 with a corner ding. It is bonkers down there at CGC Signature Series.
I feel your pain. Back in May they had a In-House Private Signing Event with the Creative Team Behind The Last Ronin. I sent in The Last Ronin #1 Albedo #2 homage for all their signatures and remarques. When I got the book back the case was badly cracked. One book, one box, one cracked case. I sent it back. Three months later it comes back without "The custom CGC Last Ronin label is ONLY being offered for this event, and it is ONLY available for the Last Ronin books that fit in our magazine-sized holder." I called customer support again and sent it back AGAIN. Four weeks later, I'm still waiting. I for one will never send in another submission. I will get my books signed at Cons. Even if I have to travel. I went to Memphis Comic Expo in September and got some nice autographs that I had CBCS witness. There were a ton of great artists there. I got a few witnessed and a few that I will save for other signings. One of my favorites was Dark Nights Death Metal #7 signed by Snyder, Capullo and Glapion for $30 plus $5.00 witness fee. I had them sign my New 52 #1 which I put in a custom Gator Guard case just for the show. I got my Batman: Sword of Azraell #1 signed by Kevin Nowlan. I didn't get that one witnessed because I hope to get Quesada to sign it one day. While the Signature series was great when Cons were on hold, the fees and headache aren't worth it any more.
Mention of newsstands when they removed all the impossible to see problems with a book on the masthead like staple removed, no centerfold, etc. a blind person can see the upc on a book, it’s on the cover.
I feel for you. Ithink that it is appropriate to mention those issues to CGC because those mistakes can have a significant impact on the value of those books. In my opinion, it is better for CGC to take a little more time before sending back books to make sure that QC issues are minimized or totally eliminated.
I know it’s frustrating but I always use mechanical errors as a way to submit large orders on cgcs dime. Quality control is still poor. I had a non signed Thor book come back with a yellow silver surfer custom label. I also have a friend who got a blue label on a qualified book missing a page. Does anyone look at these books before they are shipped? There is now an inspector number stamped on the invoice to track quality control but I’m not sure it’s helping.
I’ve been thinking of switching to cbcs. I have a book that came back double signed but only labeled once signed. The book itself on the outside( with the assumption that it’s flawless inside) was at best a 9.0 but it’s labeled a 9.8. If I ever sell it, it will be listed a 9.8 as it is labeled but sheesh. If that was a 9.8, every single book I have raw is at worst a 9.8.
They need to release the signature requirement for packages when you call and tell them to. It's my book and now I have a 3 hour round trip to go pick it up.
CCS is an ultra quick press, they spend no time on the books. They generally don’t help any & in more cases then they’ll ever admit, the rush jobs & clumsy handling harm the books. It’s a cost add. Impossible to get a 9.8 anymore on ASM 300.
My Jim Lee commissioned book has a giant spot of that air pocket looking effect inside the slab and I just sent two books I knew for a fact were at least 9’s and I got them back as 6.5’s and one even had one of the corners bent up in the corner lol. I’m now telling myself to do pictures of everything I send in going forward.
James, I am sorry you have had bad experiences. Maybe it was just bad luck because I just recieved two 9.8 books back from CGC SS without any issue. Do not lose hope man, those yellow labels are pretty dope.
All the issues you are having with Signature Series are making me nervous. Submitted my first ever Signature Series submission at NYCC, hoping everything comes back okay
Dude they are just normal every day people doing this now, there is no professional graders, guys just making a buck that give 2 f's about comics, my opinion graded/slabbed books are worthless and pointless and ruining the comic collecting community, the point of comics is to read and enjoy them not be sealed in a slab to never be opened or read
There are many aspects to the hobby. The way you enjoy the books/hobby is fine but don't infringe on my right to how I enjoy the hobby different than you.
That’s reasonable, I do believe the people who want to read will continue to read, and that slabs are a great way to display your favorite books and protect them as well. The chase for a 9.8 does seem unhealthy as the difference between that and a 9.2 sometimes is literally a few removable defects, but I don’t think it takes away from those who want to read or enjoy comics for what they are. If anything it adds a new way to appreciate comics and brings in more people to the hobby
@@tristanrujano , I think the jury is still out on just how archival safe the slabs will prove. I myself don’t trust plastic as much as some folks do nor do I trust companies like CGC necessarily investing in the best materials on their end. But I hope for all the folks who do like grading that they prove safe.
Maybe CGC has a group of, 'Quiet Quitters" in the grading and admin department? Also, just like most companies after time, QC goes down but the higher ups demand an increase in sales. New Sales will always be a priority to a company over Customer Service. :(
I had an ASM 361 it was pressed and cleaned and was at minimum 8-8.5. I sent it to cgc straight from the past office from picking it up from my presser it came back 4.0 and was taking spine ticks creases from across the cover and the entire spine which was not there when I sent it in also the signature and remark was in the wrong places from my window bag I custom made
Got three Gleason comics coming in this week. One of which I picked up on one of your sales with Joe. All say 9.8 without pressing, I know I should always press even if already graded. I got lucky and still missing 5 signature comics out.
yeah, that’s gonna take like a year for them to fix. They lost quite a lot of my books and for me to get them back. I managed to get one of them back the rest of them the person who stole them and took them makes things around. I couldn’t even recognize, what I sent I didn’t send even myself if I had the book that’s how bad it is and I’m somebody that was sending like 10 submissions 25 books at a time
Awesome you’ve got the first issue of the marvel/idw G.I.Joe or the Larry Hama verse as some fans would dub it, I strongly encourage you to read that series it’s fantastic.
I just wish they would get some experts in to verify signatures that weren't done in front of CGC. I have several signed comics with COA's that I would like to get slabbed but not if it is going to get the green label.
And for as much as they charge for the SS service you would think this area would be the cream of the crop in quality from CGC. I sent in a graded 9.8 book for the McFarlane signing and am so scared it is going to get mishandled and receive a lower grade.
Just got my first submission back, a Wolverine #88 9.0 white pages….. and there is a long woman’s hair inside the slab that wraps around to the front and back. Its horrible. And for my first submission ever I was really disappointed and upset.
CGC grading makes no sense anymore. I've been burned on 5 books this year and not by a small amount, in some cases getting a HUGE amount. Yes they're getting faster, but I feel like they've made the grades much harder or they have a lot of new people there that don't know what they're doing. I'm not sending any books to them! I'm done with them cause it's just too dangerous now. I'm happy with raw books instead of lower grades.
If you give them a grade, never expect the same grade back. They’re incompetent but don’t expect your now messed up books same grade. Never expect a grade jump.
My respect to u for real but after so many troubles with a multimillionaire businesses like CGC I have to tell u that u are to soft now and if I was u I bring the hell to them on the phone mail etc at this point . Again my respect to u for your patience, but if I was u enough is enough. Get down with the sickness !! 🚶...😡☝️
CGC is all about quantity and not so much quality. But I blame those ppl sending in everything they get. CGC can’t keep up and just lacking in quality.
UG... such a pain. The only silver lining is that the Demon #1 will eventually actually be an 8.0 for you.. you may be old and in a wheelchair by then, but better late than never right?
They need to cut down on the signature series cash grabs and concentrate on quality control
That’s why I keep my books raw.. lol Sorry you have to keep dealing with these incompetencies.. Hope everything gets sorted out for you.
Same dude.
At the end of the day, still very much worth getting comics graded. But raw is awesome to. Just depends what your goals are. If you're in the resale game, much more potential when grading of course.

I had a submission of six books all with the Miles custom label, yet one of them randomly had the secret wars 8 custom label. QC inspector approved!
Bro I cannot handle this sort of stuff. My anxiety would be out of control in situations like this. This is why I don't mess with graded books.
I'd be going ape s#it dude.
It's really not that big of a deal. Certainly a tiring hassle, but more often than not the books come back fine.
I got my CGC signature submission back today and I agree 100000% I just submitted a 9.8 comic and it came back 9.6 because they didn’t feel like grading it correctly.
Oof

Honestly that's a good idea
I honestly do the same. All my raw will stay raw. But all I buy now is pre slabbed books.
That sucks, I hope CGC watches this
I'd send in more books than I do if it weren't for the mistakes they make all the time.
And yet somehow the comic-book community has them as “the standard” why that IS is BEYOND me.
I just checked and I had 15 signature series submissions since 10/21 and 4 of them had to be sent back for mechanical error (3 damaged, 1 odd plastic in the case). It would be awesome if you recorded your phone calls with CGC so we could all hear it. Now that would be entertainment
I think that's illegal!
*watches this video*
*sees the 5 sig series comics I've submitted in my queue*
*gulps big*
Hahahaha, I hope you'll be fine!
I have 6!!!😭😭😭
Waiting on 10 here 6 Campbells and 4 Mcfarlanes... worried worried....
Damn, I’d be done too. They owe you some credit.
Your awesome letting us know about these CGC errors. I have allot of books I want to send in but now im thinking twice!
I’m always tempted to send books in for sigs, but never do. For me, signatures lose their value if I wasn’t there to have that interaction with creator.
All valid concerns. I've had a bunch of my own issues with them.
Oh wow, I just sent my first signature series to CGC.. oh snap I’m in trouble
Nah, you'll probably be fine lol.
Awesome Feedback! Keep it coming.
Thanks Colin!
After having 2 submissions with perfect copies having only 10 of 25 and 1 of 11 come back with a 9.8 I have given up on CGC myself. Send to PGX and you will not have any problems! Have sent them over 300 books, all correctly graded. They have turned into a fine company. EGS too!
I believe that there or two major issues……
Too many people in the hobby just for profit
And corporate greed, they want all the profit and still use the minimal amount of staff or upgrade the conditions that the staff is in
I still wonder why people bother with he hassle of sending books to CGC with the abundance of problems and errors on their part.
Because overall, the issues aren't as often as it feels.
Because the value raises significantly with a slabbed CGC book.
Nah James, that's just the new style of '8', '7' is how the cool kids write it 😆
I think you better off with pgx at least if u aren’t gonna sell em
Very true dude, too many issue. Mylar is sounding better everyday ahah
How about we stop giving CGC business. Again we the collectors keep accepting this subpar service!
Videos like this, scares the shit outta me,

They're gonna lose your books next for that QA bingo you got going on
Mention of newsstands when they removed all the impossible to see problems with a book on the masthead like staple removed, no centerfold, etc. a blind person can see the upc on a book, it’s on the cover.
I just did my first SS submission and now I'm worried
My Dead Pool Circle Chase #1 came back a 9.8 with no artist names and key notes. Love it. Not sending it back. It might come back with a green label.
Same, I had to resend my last ronin 1 because the slab was scuffed and they didn’t give me the custom label for it.
I think CGC was on top of it this time with the GI Joe... Larry Hama expertly traced over his own signature. 🤣
I feel for you. Ithink that it is appropriate to mention those issues to CGC because those mistakes can have a significant impact on the value of those books. In my opinion, it is better for CGC to take a little more time before sending back books to make sure that QC issues are minimized or totally eliminated.

I love the loooong pause at 4:44.
… and the one at 5:02… but this one could’ve been longer. Still, it’s a great pause.
I sent in a CGC graded 9.6 of 300 for the Todd signing. With a clean and press with their pressing service. Now, I regret it.
Try to stay optimistic, but you'll probably be fine lol.
CCS is an ultra quick press, they spend no time on the books. They generally don’t help any & in more cases then they’ll ever admit, the rush jobs & clumsy handling harm the books. It’s a cost add. Impossible to get a 9.8 anymore on ASM 300.

Give OTHER grading companies a chance, that’s all imma say.
James, sorry to hear about this. Great information as always.
I was thinking of sending my Captain America 25 McNiven variant cover on for the McNiven signing. This would be my first submission to CGC ever.
Thanks for sharing your trials and tribulations along the way to comic nirvana.

@@Rhett-Christopher that's why o said my opinion, it's my opinion and how I feel about it
That’s reasonable, I do believe the people who want to read will continue to read, and that slabs are a great way to display your favorite books and protect them as well.
It is my believe that they will be cracking down on QC more going forward
CGC did one whoopsie after another.
I had an ASM 361 it was pressed and cleaned and was at minimum 8-8.5. I sent it to cgc straight from the past office from picking it up from my presser it came back 4.0 and was taking spine ticks creases from across the cover and the entire spine which was not there when I sent it in also the signature and remark was in the wrong places from my window bag I custom made
Yikes!
They should offer credits or some other remedy when these issues happen.
Got three Gleason comics coming in this week. One of which I picked up on one of your sales with Joe. All say 9.8 without pressing, I know I should always press even if already graded. I got lucky and still missing 5 signature comics out.
9.8! Nice man!
yeah, that’s gonna take like a year for them to fix. They lost quite a lot of my books and for me to get them back. I managed to get one of them back the rest of them the person who stole them and took them makes things around. I couldn’t even recognize, what I sent I didn’t send even myself if I had the book that’s how bad it is and I’m somebody that was sending like 10 submissions 25 books at a time
You would think the QC would be stringent on their signature series. Ridiculous
OMG. Now I’m thinking of not sending my Sandman book to be signed by Neil Gaiman now. it’s issue 1 with a 9.8.
Maybe there is an interior sign?
Wow man so sorry. That's tough. That's all bad.
Awesome you’ve got the first issue of the marvel/idw G.I.Joe or the Larry Hama verse as some fans would dub it, I strongly encourage you to read that series it’s fantastic.
Oh im a huge fan!
This why we stopped submitting and we no longer buy CGC books. Unfortunately PGX and CGC now look the same to me.
I just wish they would get some experts in to verify signatures that weren't done in front of CGC. I have several signed comics with COA's that I would like to get slabbed but not if it is going to get the green label.
CBCS currently offers that service if you are interested. I hope that helps but I wish that CGC would also do the same.
I've been advised by friends to never send a 9.8 back for a signing as they will inevitably down grade or damage it.
There's always a risk!
I'd say it depends on the book, but it's definitely a risk. I probably wouldn't take the chance with anything worth like $500 or more.
*_Just for clarity: THAT is your G.I. Joe book?_*
*_Let's hope the book that has 2 signatures has your label._*
(Pretty) sure that it is! Haha
I hope you got the name of the customer service rep that you spoke to do it when you call if you did just ask to speak to that person
Does that mean someone has a 9.8 out there but it's someone else's books grading notes?
Misprint on the cgc labels up the value by 25% at least, doesn’t it?
I sent in a 9.6+ candidate to CGC to get Ewan McGregor signed, looks like it was very mishandled and came back a 7.0......
I don't like the signature series issues either. The main issue being that it takes precedence over almost everything else
I have the same exact thing on a Jim Lee signing
Would like to see a “grading summit”. You and Dave from his channel.
If you give them a grade, never expect the same grade back. They’re incompetent but don’t expect your now messed up books same grade. Never expect a grade jump.
I think I figured it out. Some of the books they are sending you are actually from CGC on Earth 2.
🚶...😡☝️
They certainly are having quality control issues lol.
Omg this is horrible. I'm sending 3 books out for the Chris Claremont signing but after watching this video I'm in pure fuckin panic mode lol.
Imagine how often this happens. CGC is slacking hard on their quality control.
That's rough buddy.
CGC is all about quantity and not so much quality. But I blame those ppl sending in everything they get. CGC can’t keep up and just lacking in quality.
Lmao I got back my ghost rider #1 (2022) signed by ben Percy and Crain. Except it was signed by Ryan stegman and not Clayton Crain.
I have a signed ghost rider 37 and this makes me sway from grading it😂😂
If you’re gonna grade it, send it to CBCS- you’ll get the nasty green label from CGC if you send a pre-signed, unwitnessed book
I don’t understand how they keep doing this lol It doesn’t make sense. It’s like they keep giving your books to the same incompetent person lol
UG... such a pain. The only silver lining is that the Demon #1 will eventually actually be an 8.0 for you.. you may be old and in a wheelchair by then, but better late than never right?
You'd think so!
Main reason I stopped submitting books to CGC.
And you’re all keep paying them to stretch open your comics and examine them. I can’t understand that.
So infuriating. Many people having the same problems. CGC is sacrificing the quality of service for faster turnaround times.
This may be true. Return time is great right now, but definitely some QC issues arising from it, it seems.
