  • The new hybrid Renault Clio E-Tech Esprit Alpine is a sheep in wolf's clothing but it makes total sense. Great sporty looks, quality interior and the economy of a hybrid. The big question is how does it drive ?

A technical masterpiece that has the one pedal driving experience of a BEV whilst also offering the economy of a 1980s diesel car ,despite being petrol powered.

I bought one in shadow grey, had it for a month now and I'm really impressed. You definitely get a lot for your money, looks, comfort, performance and frugality. I like the B mode driving and trying to find out if the break lights come on when in use as it is as reactive as using the normal breaks. This a great feature as it saves your break pads and energy regeneration is good. I love my car 😍

Had mine exact same spec since January. Just over 5000 miles in and averaging 61.1 mpg. Great little car with everything in it. Came from a 2019 polo gti and don't really miss the extra performance

    I picked mine up a
month ago exactly like this. I'm over the moon with it even coming from an i20N. The interior quality is mega and if you
ask me is on par if not better than the, albeit boring, Polo. MPG is astounding too. I genuinely love driving it. Great review as always!

Same here. Had mine a month now & very impressed with the car. Ped's right, the seats are wonderfully comfortable & hugging and I am currently getting just over 56mpg. I have mine in metallic ceramic grey which, with all the black accents, makes it look stunning. It's quick when pulling away from standstill too. I'm coming from a 2021 Peugeot 208 GT Premium and I guess I just have a soft spot for stylish, fun, small French hatchbacks!

From an i20n, that’s an odd choice to go to this. Unless it was for the auto option. But the i20N has this matched on features, and then drives like not much else . Couldn’t imagine chopping mine in for one

@@antj29 I had my fun in it. Cracking cars. I waited a year for mine. Had it over two years but wanted something a bit more sedate and less crashy over our bad roads. The Clio is no match but is a good car in its own right. I'd say the build quality is better on the Clio too especially interior plastics. Plus the rear light trims are water free. That used to annoy me on the N. I do miss the N though and I'm glad I owned one.

Fair play to Renault. It is a good car for the price (considering the current market anyway). I wonder whether there will be an Esprit Alpine trim level for the Renault 5? Do we know that yet? Or is that less likely because of the A290?

  • @AR-gk1kt

I have one as a company car and leave it in default 'My Sense' mode with the steering set to sport, only as the throttle pedal is very sensitive in sport mode and I prefer to dig into the pedal. I drive it in a fun style all the time and average a touch over 60mpg, I don't find putting it in Eco returns any greater efficiency, it just encourages boring driving by dulling the throttle and steering response. This hybrid Clio makes me wish that the pure Alpine branded cars were going hybrid instead of jumping to electric, as I really love how fun and frugal the car is and not having to find charging stations. I drove a N/A RS Clio for years and when pulling away from lights this hybrid puts it to shame! If there was a bit more mid range and top end power, slightly lower suspension, valved exhaust and Alpine bodywork/badging, this could easily be sold as a smoking hot Alpine hybrid hatchback. I find people already think this is a hot hatch with how aggressive it looks, I often get people driving next to me revving their exhausts, unfortunately I can't return the gesture. I do like the Esprit Alpine branding as it helps a younger demographic feel a part of the Alpine brand, which as I understand it after the A290 is going to only be releasing very expensive cars.

    Another great review Ped.
I owned a Mk 1 Clio 1.4 back when they were new for about 6 weeks. It was a great little car but the driver of a furniture removal van didn't think so and wrote it off for me, forcing me to get a 19 16v. We've had a couple of other clios over the years and they've been really good. The missus was about to get one of the ones you've tested here but then the 5 e tech was announced and a deposit put down on one of those instead.
Design wise, I think Renault are on top form at the moment.

A more egalitarian car with an egalitarian price. Not all cars NEED to cost north of £100,000 to be appealing, do they? Is there hope for budget buyers of new cars? Maybe.
Driving an old friend's Honda Insight hybrid...with a manual gearbox...was engaging. Having somethng like that today is a pipe dream, I realise!

Brilliant review I have to say. I do like that version of the Clio and am not surprised that it's easy to run as it reminds me of the Clio diesel I had from the point of view of it having a bigger engine and being very frugal on the juice as my diesel Clio regularly managed 65mpg at 70 mph. It uses the exact same hybrid system as the Arkana that you test drove a wee while ago. Whilst £25k is alot for a Clio you're getting quite alot for your money.

I have a Peugeot 208 GT and had to buy an auto (manual not available in my market), but it does make it a bit more fun when you put it into manual. On slicks (Tom Boardman’s used Dunlops which felt like wood to the touch when cold - not at all sticky - the grip was immense and the braking so good. They could literally lift both rear wheels off the floor under heavy braking and three wheel through tight corners. Wonderful fun, like being able to use what felt like a mini BTTC Car!

I think it's inappropriate for this car to be called an "Alpine." It has nothing to do with performance-only with looks. It's similar to the Golf R, which is a genuine performance car. However, Volkswagen now uses the "R" badge on other models as well, even though the "R" on some VW models relates only to trim levels, not performance. I find this confusing and very unfortunate.
(Additionally, the Alpine arrow on the right side of the Clio points in the wrong direction-unlike on the R5 Alpine)

Great little car and terrific value. I commend Renault for giving the Clio a refresh and an extended life when Ford and others have or will shortly be abandoning the supermini market. The Mini has become more of a pricey fashion accessory and has always been compromised by its 2 doors and small interior and boot space. The Skoda Fabia and Vauxhall Corsa have little style or sophistication. TBH I don’t really understand how Renault can afford to continue with the Clio with the Z EV mandate meaning that it makes little sense to be selling small ICE vehicles when they face the same penalty as they would incur selling their most expensive ICE SUV. Performance more than adequate for the class although it would have been nice to have a manual gear selection override. Great that Renault have though kept an entry model which I guess will be popular with driving schools and young drivers.

I like it. I drove the pre-facelifted version in the south of France a couple of years back, and was impressed. Sure it is not a "Hot Hatch", but it gave you was more than sprightly performance, the sport mode really does give it more urgency, and the fact it I got over 50mpg in the Camargue region, just be pottering about on their A-roads and motorways (D and N and autoroutes), makes me feel that Renault have nailed the self-charging hybrid. Kudos to them and the Alpine version looks great. 0-60 times really no longer apply, it is the overall performance that matters today on our clogged up roads, and the Clio more than meets that.

Agree with you totally , not many little hybrid superminis about , i would choose between this and the Yaris if i was downsizing , the omission of a pan roof favours the Yaris materials inside favour the Clio , but good to have choice and debate thanks once again.

Yaris is more frugal at the pump, Clio it feels better overall. It is a nicer place to spend time in.

I bet the ex-RS engineers at Alpine were gagging to put a 1.6 turbo kind of hybridy engine in that, paint it Liquid Yellow and give it 250 ish bhp. No paddles is a bit of an odd choice, too. I feel like that would’ve given it at least luke-warm hatch credentials.

    • @laurradu868
      @laurradu868 Месяц назад

Lack of paddles is due to the multimode gearbox. The gears are changed with the help of the second electric motor.

Juke 2 yes, kadjar no, qashqai.. I am not sure. The platform is CMF-B high specification. I think qashqai is on CMF-C. But as I said, I am not sure.

Renault's new range is really quite nice to drive. I've driven the 1.0 Clio and it was surprisingly good to drive and perky too, comfortable, economical, and relaxing. The only thing I find with all these small capacity turbo engines is that they can be a pain to get off the line cleanly - you have to ensure it's hooked up and rolling, otherwise it can get bogged down and hesitate. Nice car, nice colour, nice styling, I just wish they did a manual, or an auto with paddles. Thanks for the video.

@@PetrolPed Sorry Ped it's part of the Renault Group not Stellantis.
I own a pre-facelifted Mark 5 Clio E-Tech Techno (23-Reg) and apart from the aesthetics, seats and wheels, this all is familiar to me. Travelling from Reading to London, using the motorways, last week I achieved consumption of 67 mpg I will be going down to Dorset in a couple of weeks time so I will see what it's like on a long journey.
People are complaining about the lack of manual override available but, although not quite the same, it does have a kick-down function if you need to overtake in a hurry.
@bikerman123 was asking if you could get a bike in the back, when I had my 2 slightly smaller Mark 4 Clio's (Original and facelift), I did get a bike in the back, although the seats had to be lowered and the front wheel had to be taken off. Regarding size which someone else enquired about I though the length of the Mark 4 and 5 was about the same but as I was at the garage the other day a Mark 4 parked next to me and I could see that the rear doors on the Mk5 are slightly longer.
My previous car was a Megane GT-Line (19-Reg) which was only available in Iron Blue for that trim, but it seemed to be slightly darker than that on the Alpine Esprit Clio, which I thought was the only colour option for that as well as all the other reviews of that trim were all in the Blue.
