Marvel Comics have produced some great action figures over the past 25 years, but none more nostalgic and fun as ToyBiz's Famous Covers line. These cloth costumed 9 inch figures were a loving homage to the 8 inch figures of the 1970's - Mego's World's Greatest Super Heroes! We got action figures in doll form of all the classic, from Spider-Man to Captain America, to Iron Man, Wolverine and more. And of course there were some surprises along the way including the first ever Aunt May action figure. Marvel's Famous Covers is my all time favorite toy line as it combines the two things I love the most - comics history and action figures and I hope you enjoy this loving tribute to it's 25th Anniversary

Oddly enough my favorite thing about this line was how every figure had something wrong with it, one unique deviation that made them special.
Their imperfections made them cool
Years ago my mom actually managed to find that Daredevil figure somehow, I still don't know where she bought it, but it's sitting on the very top of my shelf.
You can remove the mask on Wolverine without it tearing. That stickiness is a post production secretion that came out of the materials the mask was made from. Once you remove it and give it a good cleaning with dishwasher soap and water, that should remedy the issue. I did that to mine about seven years ago and it remains completely normal. You probably want to clean off the head as well. Good as new!
Also, if you want to maintain the pleather material that hasn't flaked much yet, you can give it new life by gently brushing on a coat or two of Modge Podge (FLAT) sealant. This is typically used to provide a protective coating on acrylic paints so it has a built in flexibility when it dries clear. It will provide added durability to the pleather and improved appearance.
Wow - great info all around - THANKS!!!
Each design was amazing, but there's nothing more amazing than the spider-man
I always say, a Marvel Line is only as good as the Spider-Man figure...
The Spider-Man is cool
Always to coolest
grew up with electro, magneto, iron man and wolverine as a kid. hadn’t ever seen these figure’s again till now!
This is obviously gonna be the best video ever
I mean, yeah, obviously!
The Captain America Famous Covers Action figure is awesome 👍
I freaking love that screaming thing!
Black Panther..Iron Fist..Shang Chi..Power Man..just to name a few.
FANTASTIC choices!
that goblin is fantastic! I need to pick me up one.
It is truly one of the very best - so much personality!
they would have never made these but a web-man and a hammerhead would be epic!
Yeah - I think those are waaaaaaaay down the list
@@CarbonScoring True dat
Just finished the premiere and I was right!! This video was nothing but AWESOME!!!!
Thanks! Always good to have you in the chat!
It was my pleasure Carbon
I really like the hulk figure! Didn't realize that they did as many characters as they did
It turned out to be a pretty solid line - but it still left me wanting so much more!
@@CarbonScoring didn't hasbro do something similar to this in what I believe is the spiderman origins line?
They did. They started of doing a 9" DC line and later did some marvel characters(Spiderman, cap america, daredevil and others). They were nice.
I love the captain America and spider man because I’m a huge fan of them
Same!
I've always wanted these so I searched on mercari, luckily they are at least 20-50 bucks
Like I said - it is my favorite toy line!
I think a famous covers jubilee would've been awesome
Never, ever considered her, but you are right - it would be cool
This will be so awesome
I’m excited for y’all to see it
Love the ironman
Then this is the video for you!
Red score is so awesome
He is amazing - so much potential for this line had it continued
I was able to pick 5 of these figures at a garage sale and they remind me of my uncles old Migo figures its so amazing. Seeing how cheap they are i kinda want to pick up green goblin and cyclops.
You should seek those out, they are a couple of my favorites!
I kinda like that brown costume Wolvie, wish Hasbro would make a better brown suit figure with those colors lmao
Agree - that one has so much potential
@@CarbonScoring maybe they could do a brown suit Wolvie with long ears instead of the usual short ears
I recall ToyBiz made some WCW versions of Famous Covers as well, or rather Famous Covers-esque figures
I’ll have to check those out
LOVE these- collected several about 11 or 12 yrs ago
I do truly LOVE LOVE them!
The Lego Marvel super heroes game Cyclops had a Jim Lee design.
Cool!
I love the Green goblin
Based of that carnage if they kept going the venom or toxin in this line would be insane
Completely agree!
I had a few clothed figures from the Spider-Man Origins line. I had Spider-Man,Black Costume Spider-Man, Punisher,Wolverine and Captain America.
Yep - wanna see a video on those figures?
@@CarbonScoring hell yeah you should LMAO 😂
I miss how since these 90’s toy packages didn’t sport 57 different languages, we wouldn’t get shorted on the character bio and background info. 😊
I also miss cross sell on the back…
I would've loved to get a Ben Grimm and Johnny Storm, maybe a 2 pack, just to finish out Marvel's First Family
Huge hole in this collection - arguably the biggest!
I loved Famous Covers for its time.
Man, I love those toys!
I have dark Phoenix and the spider man and spider woman two pack, great video!
Thanks for being a loyal subscriber!
I still have that Thor figure! Bought it back in like 1998-1999.
I look at mine every day!
The mask thing is super cool 😎
This was a great video. Thanks for creating it. I had many of these, mostly bought on clearance, but I never removed any from the package. Now I see that was unfortunate. I sold them off to make room, but may get back into them. Love the reaction to the Jean Grey figure. I'll have to think about what should have been made, but right off the bat, Colossus, Thing and Human Torch, Submariner, and original X-Men in their black outfits.
Thanks man! I'm glad my true passion for the line came across - and - this is pretty cool - the person who designed the boxes saw this video and reached out to me and I am trying to set up an interview with him soon!
They look just like the figures they use on Robot Chicken
That is probably not with coincidence
A definite must have
Thanks for watching - this video came from the heart, so every view it gets means a ton to me
great vid as always and to answer the final question i think a war machine figure would look great in the famous covers style
WOW - that isn't one I have thought of - great choice!
It would be nice to see bouth ben reilly suits, the scarlet spider and his own spider man suit.
You’re not kidding! I would love that!
I would love have to see the Savage SheHulk famous cover action figures
Ooooo - that would be a good one!
This packaging reminds me of the modern NECA packaging. And that makes me happy because I love that style with the Velcro flap. This was an awesome video. My favorite has to be Iron Man (mainly because of bias)
Thanks for the watch - you are right, NECA does do something similar with their packages
Man i loved these! I remember seeing them a lot...i even had the iron man figure.
Iron Man is one of the best!
@@CarbonScoring indeed!
Man I NEED one of these 😫
Peter Parker head sculpt for the first one reminds me of Doom Guy.
I need to get these and collect them
They fill my heart with joy - no joke
I love the Famous Covers series though I still can't believe they never made a Thing or Human Torch figure....bummer!
My two biggest regrets in the line
Excellent reviews man, thanks for posting!
Glad you like them! I appreciate the view!
The Famous Covers basic spandex body suits were so stretchy that I was able to put them on Playing Mantis Captain Action figures and customize many characters in sixth scale.
I had no idea! You have me curious, I may have to try that - which ones worked best?
@@CarbonScoring I made various characters using the Spandex body suits from Daredevil, Magneto, Vision, Thor, Green Goblin and Iron Man. The gloves and sometimes the boots could also fit. I usually had to customize new masks, belts and logos. Of course , I couldn't stretch anything made of pleather.
It helped that the Famous Covers figures generally had large hands, feet and physiques for 9 inch figures while the Playing Mantis Captain Actions were a bit shorter and not overly muscular compared to some other sixth scale figures.
Blade and the silver surfer would've been great characters for them to do. I had the ( brown) wolverine figure as a kid, the mask was impossible to put back on once removed, and Logan's face and head is very small also, and he doesn't even have ears? But I've still got a fondness for it due to nostalgia.
Gary Busey Aunt May LOL. Great video.
Call 'em like I see 'em. And unfortunately, you can never unsee this...
I was just thinking about them the other day when I was at the doctors office while watching a bunch of your videos even my doctor was watching the video while examining me
Sounds like you have the second coolest doctor ever...
@@CarbonScoring your missing a few from the 90’s waves (Black Cat Doctor Octopus, And Hob Goblin) I’m not sure which stores they would have come from but I did some digging and they look legit and there’s another Spider-Man with a molded head and they brought they line back in 2003 with even sandman and a few character I didn’t recognize since I’m too young (gen z) I’m still looking for a venom but I’ll let you know if I find one
@@DangerousMoonwalkerOfficial that was a different wave of figures made by Hasbro - I’ll cover them in a different video!
@@CarbonScoring wow really I guess I’m that outdated and out of touch
Great video as always. There was one two set that was missing and that was the Wolverine Comic to Film two set. You got a comic book accurate Wolvie and a Hugh Jackson Wolverine figure. I had this. I got it from Kay Bee. When I moved recently I got rid of a ton of stuff, this one being one of the things that was sold. I kept it in the original box, never removing it. Wish I kept it.
I also got rid of all my Famous Covers as they were too sticky and were sticking together. I meant to have kept Spidey but I accidentally gave him away. I will have to rebuy him post haste.
I have those and considered adding them, but because they weren't in the "famous covers" packaging style exactly, I considered them a sub brand - I do have the comic wolvie on display with my x-men, though
I passed on marvel legends at $7:99 for these because we collected marvel universe 10 inch figures so they matched up pretty good. And our Hulk was the 12 inch mego
That works for sure!!!
I have some of these vintage action figures.
They are so great in their imperfections!
Really wish they would've made that Namor figure they would've done great with his expressive eyebrows
They would have nailed a screaming Namor head for sure
I’m so exited
Well worth it!
Now I gotta dig mine out and display them. Great vid Brotha!
YES! You totally should!!!
I collected these when they first came out. I still have ten or more in the plastic tub somewhere. My Captain America didn't have the rubber boots the one in your video has. Mine had the pleather, fold over boots. And all the ones I see online have the pleather boots. Is there any chance the boots on yours got switched from another figure? They look like the boots on Daredevil.
You know - now that you mention it - I may have switched them over 20 years ago and forgotten about it...
I was *this* close to buying that Carnage figure at the comic shop in Chattanooga over spring break. If I had known it was one of the best, I probably would have.
It is a good one, but how would it work with the rest of your collection?
@@CarbonScoring I’m a pretty eclectic collector…I buy what I like rather than entire lines, etc. but, like you, carnage isn’t my favorite villain
If only this line kept going I would totally buy ot
I’d love to see it return (again)
Totally off topic, but by any chance did you order the SHFiguarts Tobey Spidey Figure? I know you don’t do one off videos, but I’d def love to see a video from you about it
I did get it - I was thinking about waiting to do a video when I can compare multiple versions of all three Spider-Men!
@@CarbonScoring i’m excited already
That carnage is still amazing to this day
Truly a standout!
the music in this sounds like the yo gabba gabba outro music
That is the best compliment I have gotten in a while!!!
Green goblin has a gorgeous package😂
well, truth is truth...
speaking of nostalgia, i was born 92 and growing up, I had a collection of Marvel fridge magnets. They were kinda like trading cards. Dont know if you have any of them or if you have done a video about them before. Just something this video made me think of, for some reason.
I found something, in 2000 to celebrate the release of xmen, there was a 2 pack with a comic wolverine it was the exact same as the famous cover wolverines without the removable mask. it also comes with an xmen movie wolverine, so technically there is 2 other famous cover wolverines, its fairly pricey (around 50 without shipping) but i'd love to see an update with those figures.
I have those - there were also Storm and Toad two packs as well - since they were not in the Famous Covers proper line, I didn't include them, but they are great figures
@@CarbonScoring shame, i'd still love to see you review them.
I used to have a Spider-Man just like that, broke it fighting over him with my brother 😢
oh my, I LOVE THE COVERAGE!!! Please do more! maybe with DC 9 inch doll line(I forget the name of the line)
Love all your iron man content ♥️
This will be fun
Used to hate these as a kid but as an adult I wish i would have played with them. My older brother only like action figures , so you know that’s all I liked. But I can just imagine all the adventures with these cool toys. I dislike how everything is so life like nowadays , these look childish and full of life
I think you are exactly right about the appeal of this line!
Now we need a quandale dingle figure made by these companies
...maybe...
miss the buzz. Bender here! great video !!
Hi, just ordered both the spidey two packs, do you have any tips to fix stickiness and decay on Electro’s lightning bolts on his suit or the boots and gloves of Spiderwoman? Thanks!
P.S. I just found out that there is a two pack featuring a better yellow Wolverine and his movie counterpart, so you might want to add that to your collection!
I would be very careful - that old plastic tends to decay and if you use anything too abrasive you can ruin your figures. I do have that two pack as well as the Toad and Storm ones, but since they were not in the Famous Covers line proper, I didn't include them in the video - it is a great Wolvie and the one I have on display in my office!
The Night crawler🔥🌌🌹💯
One of the best for sure!
I'm not sure if a mego style iron man would ever work without heavy tooling, he just doesn't work with soft goods
also would you ever consider making a video on toybiz's legendary comic book heroes line?
Yes, I totally have that on the list of videos down the line!
A Doctor Strange from the Ditko/Lee era would’ve been fantastic. They probably would’ve nailed the head sculpt
Probably my biggest miss if the whole like - Strange would have been INCREDIBLE!
Gary Busey as Aunt May?
Some are cool but I'd honestly id stick to vintage mego.
Hard to beat the OGs
I can't say I was ever a fan of these to be honest lol
They have a very specific charm...
we all know aunt may is the best figure
I had some of these. I know I had the Spider-Man. Only thing I didn't realize back then was that if it was from Amazing Fantasy #15, shouldn't the back spider logo have been blue?
YES! The only time they have gotten that completely correct is on the Marvel Legends Retro 3.75 figure!
@CarbonScoring i thought they got it correct on the toybiz legends
How there wasn't a powerman and iron fist is bogus. Both would have been easy reuses.
Those would have looked amazing!
Need the Carnage😍
It is more amazing than I temembered
@@CarbonScoring I didnt know about these figures and its shocking that they have Carnage, my all time fsv character. I wonder why he was made before Vrnom
Great collection!!

Very Kool 👍
I have a Steve dikto Spider-Man. Though he has faded eyes making spidey Look like he has pink-eye.
Can a head be safely removed from the famous cover series action figures?
I have never tried - they are softer plastic - but not rubbery like a Mego - I think you would need to take the whole figure apart
Loving Mego growing up I was soo looking forward to these..But being honest they were overall disappointing..Being to large to hang with Megos..The removable masks were terrible..Half of all The face sculpts were horrible and the Hands, boots and gloves were to large..There were some goodies though. Storm,Thor, Iron Man and Nightcrawler were stand outs
Yep - all of that is true!
Great one..do you know when the first Xmen movie came out there is a tie in..Wolverine 2 pack wt movie Jackman version and tiger stripe Wolvie which i did pick up..and Storm wt movie Berry version and white Jim Lee inspired Ororo which sadly i saw but regretfully did not pick..😦
I have both of those, but since they weren't in the classic Famous Covers packaging, I chose to leave them out - that Wolverine is the one I display in my office, though
I had daredevil
I bought a couple extra DDs thinking I was going to do customs of other figures - never happened
My Cap came with red buccaneer boots... I don't think the boots you have on yours came with it..
You were Thwip on RTM? I was majorjoe23
Nice! Man, I miss those days…
I doubt that the creators of the figures really cared about details. Spiderman they have totally messed up!
Neither the eyes, nor the logo on the chest is identical to the one on the comic!!!! And where the hell are the blue pants???? Black? She's serious. Beautiful is different.
So the black pants are from his first appearance in Amazing Fantasy 15, but I agree the eyes and chest logo do not match that comic
Where's doctor octopus
He was in the Spider-Man Origins line that came later
Oh man!! Those are freaking horrible! I love Mego-styled figures, but these are just horrendous. To each his own!
This is one of my favorite comments ever! While I admit that - objectively - you are correct, there is a “you had to be there” nostalgia tied into all of this! Thanks for the comment - it made me laugh out loud!
For as long as I live, I will NEVER understand the appeal of these figures. The original 8" Megos certainly weren't perfect, but there were some figures that were at least acceptable. Each and every one of these Famous Covers figures was atrocious, though. How can anyone look at that Captain America, for instance, and see it as anything other than a complete failure? Everyone's entitled to their own opinion, of course, but I've considered these toys to be horrible jokes from day 1.
Hahaha! Fair enough! I will always love them!
They made carnage and didn't made venom?
"Defined a generation?"
You're sorely confused. These figures were a hard sell at retail, and became clearance items quickly. These may have been inspired by Mego, but that line lasted a decade and looked great. These were lousy, turds wrapped in gold foil.
Personally think the line was a pile of shite.
Pale facimile of Mego.
I've got Thor somewhere, it's lame.
Ha! That is fantastic! Thanks for your honest opinion!
@@CarbonScoring we almost had a haiku there from dave ribbons. like you said - they had a certain charm.
