YES!! Just one of the best storytellers of his musical generation, conversationally told but with orchestration that elevates it to art. I adore him forever.
Wow. That was really amazing. The music was superb. I kind of thought like you did Harri that it was going to have a good ending until he said that they sang a song that he could not sing ever again. I'm paraphrasing of course. It sounded like he could not sing the song ever again because he had his heart broken. I did not know it was going to end exactly like it did but I figured he would wake up alone. Great choice Tim.
I loved your review of this song. It's a trivial story set to orchestral excellence. That's another funny aspect. I just discovered Neil Hannon, and I listen endlessly to TDC. I read somewhere that there have been other band members, but there were times when he played everything but orchestral and percussion part. Is that why you didn't detect a drum? 😮❤
Neil Hannon, aka The Divine Comedy is surely one of the great song writers of the past 30 years. His compositions are intelligent, moving, funny, thought-provoking and often beautiful. He has written other terrific story-telling songs. Perhaps next try ' A Lady of a Certain Age' - again, a bitter sweet tale. His catalogue is bulging with terrific stuff......He also composed the songs from the recently released 'Wonka' film.
The Divine Comedy are like Steely Dan. They have so many great songs in so many great styles you can't just pick a few favorites. I like "To The Rescue", "The Best Mistakes" and "Sticks and Stones"
Very enjoyable. Not familiar with this artist but this has made me curious to look for more. His voice reminds me of someone else but I cannot recall it. Anyone else hear it? Thanks Harri and Tim 🌺✌️
Neil Hannon is feckin amazing and absent friends is a brilliant album, so many great songs and even though they had a number 1 not talked about nearly enough, and if you ever watched father ted all the music ftom that is divine comedy including my lovely horse. But that aside tracks like Norman and Norma, the best mistakes, certainty of chance, gin soaked boy, bad ambassdor, becoming more like Alfie, come home Billy Bird the list goes on, show his wonderful wit, intelligence, story telling and musically beautiful songwriting. Two other recommendations of acts yo check out with equally talented buggers would be belle and sebastian and for me even better Tindersticks though darker reach levels of musical perfection especially the first 3 albums try Jism, city sickness, tiny tears, my sister or rented rooms as a starting point

This is so beautiful it makes me cry every time. Neil Hannon is a huge talent.

This was just great, thank you Tim and Harri.
Greatest Baroque Pop band ever.
So glad you really liked this one Harri. Neil Hannon is a lyrical genius and brilliant songwriter.
🥰
So pleased you enjoyed that... :-)
Great stuff, thanks to Tim and Harri.
Neil Hannon is an under-rated genius. A Lady of a Certain Age next, please?
Genius....
If you enjoyed this one then check out another track from the same album called Sticks and Stones. Beautiful arrangement.

Hannon is a huge fan of Scott Walker.......and you can tell.
Debbie, I think he sounds very much like Ray Davies.

Yes!!! You’re right! Especially the way he sounded in “Celluloid Heroes”! Thank you so much! 🌸
