I have carried it on 12 day back country hikes as well and it was always there to serve. The package opener is something that Leatherman should incorporate on all their multi-tools.

I bought a couple "kicks" off ebay cheap and on one the tools would flop out. Sent it in to leatherman and they sent me a "wingman" with a sheath. At first I was pissed, until I played with it a bit and noticed how sophisticated the shape and design of it. What a step up in engineering from the early leatherman pst. I have a wave, rebar, kick, blast, original (pst), lost an awesome Swisstool RS that I was reserving as a true survival tool for my wilderness pack, and I've owned a couple of the schrade "tough tool", but I prefer carrying my wingman most of the time cause it suits my needs. Before I retired, I spent tens of thousands on dedicated mechanic tools and rarely ever tried to use a multi tool instead. But now am old and just like to do small easy "fix it" jobs like draw slides, door hinges, or the like...nothing heavy. The wingman perfectly suits my needs. I like to have it on walks with my dog and trips around town. A good "urban" (as you said) for this old guy. Thanks Ben. Keep up the good work.

I have never felt like the Wingman got enough love. I have always thought it was a pretty dang good EDC tool. Has just about everything a regular person needs on a daily basis without all they extras that they wouldn't necessarily use. In my opinion, it is a great urban EDC. I like the Swisstool RS by the way, an excellent tool.

I have been carrying the Wingman for the last 3 years as my EDC tool, Yes I do love the outside scissors, and I don't mind the combo blade because I always carry a folder in my other pocket. The first thing that drew me to the Wingman was the pocket clip. I had been looking for a full size pocket carry mult itool for some time when the Wingman came out. This tool will stay in my pocket for some time to come.

I agree with your observation about the price point fir the Wingman.
About 6 years ago Hime Depot had the Wingman on sale for about $30.
The next year they had the Skeletool on sale fir the same price. A good price for what was then $40 multitools.
I truly can't believe the huge price increases at Leatherman- especially with the increased competition.

Great review. Here's a good whinge for you. When you mentioned how prices are high for the Leatherman tools in the US, in Australia, the very same tools are at least twice or three times the price. Obviously, there are a number of important factors, why these tools are a bit more pricey...like shipping costs, currency exchange rates between the two countries, the size of a potential market and turnover, competition from other producers etc. I think you get the idea. So to cut the chase, I'm always looking for a Leatherman bargin, even it's a used one. Any yet, one day I was in Bunnings (Australia's largest hardware retailer), and in the tool shop, I saw a few Gerber models (no Leatherman) and I purchased the Gerber Vise for $22.00 AU. All in all, your reviews are great, and BTW, my choice of Leatherman that I own is the Crunch. :)

Great review of the Leatherman Wingman! I got my Wingman over 12 years ago as a gift before leaving my country to go to South East Asia. It is still serving me well! Normally is has lived in my backpack, but recently I have been using it as my EDC on my belt. The pocket clip is fantastic and works great on my belt an even on my jeans and shorts without a belt, making it super handy! It helps me get those quick tasks done around the house or when I'm out. I would love a Wave or Surge, but the prices here are very expensive, I'd just get my tool kit when I need to do serious work. I'm thinking of getting a Victorinox Rambler, or Huntsman or Pioneer X as a companion for my Wingman. Love your reviews. Take care and God bless.

I paid $27 for my Wingman. If it did not have the package opener, I would have returned it. The package opener is so great. I hope more multi-tools get it. I removed it from my Wingman and put it in my Rebar. Much more comfortable handle. For $60, I would not recommend the Wingman. The Rebar is a much more refined tool for the same price.

0:08 The Wingman is now _$70_ , and Wave+ _$110_ . This is not due to "increasing manufacturing costs". Leatherman is simply being a for-profit business and charging what they can get away with now that "EDC" is a big business.

There was a time that I really wished that the pliers on all multi tools were all spring assist. I’ve found that I really prefer no spring. I feel like they always open a bit too far. What was discovered was that the spring mechanism within the pivot of the plier will always fail before the plier does. I really don’t like the spring on the OHT.

I've had the wingman for a few years. One complaint I had was when using the pliers with any force, you'd come away with some pain in your palm from the handle and some pain. I have larger hand and the wingman is kinda small and the edges aren't very forgiving. I think those three together caused the problem for me. Just upgraded to the wave+ and the longer handle and smoother edges fixed that problem.

Spot on, went to look at the Free last week and although it is a cool design the actual tool set is underwhelming and seemed a bit too thin and flimsy for me. I’m a fan of the Signal but it needs an aggressive file and a sharp pair of scissors. Other than that it feels way more sturdy than the Free series.

Just found your channel and I’m having fun geeking out on multi-tool vids!
On the Wingman, I bought min back when they were $30 and liked it so much that I bought two. Simply couldn’t beat it for that price and I love the spring loaded pliers and the scissors on the outside.
What I don’t like: I hate combo blades. Seriously, they’re annoying. I also find that the belt clip is pretty useless.
Would I buy the Wingman again at the current price of roughly $60? I’m not sure. For $60 I’d like to see replaceable wire cutters and some refinement to the tool that I just don’t think is there.
I still carry my a Wingman on a regular basis and it hasn’t let me down.

Excellent Tool Love mine only 1 issue. PLEASE don't use anything to strip wire other than a high quality wire stripper. Electrical Current travels on the outside of the wire. One nick in the conductor can and probably will cause heat to build up and eventually can cause the conductor to overheat and or catch fire. A multi-tool can not consistently strip the insulation off the wire without compromising the conductor. Unless you are really accurate or really lucky, spend the $10-20 on a good wire stripper. That is an excellent question. I think I like the Wave/Charge series for that application. I like the fact that is has the micro driver, which can be very useful for smaller screws. I like the fact that it has the ability to change into multi drivers. I personally would choose the Charge+ black on black because it is a military application and for the better knife steel. It is a bit expensive, but I think she would be the envy of her fellow service members. The Charge will come with a pocket clip and sheath for multiple carry options as well. It will also include a decent selection of bits, so it would not be necessary to purchase the full bit kit.

The Juice still works, but looks awfull (bend scales, missing paint, that kind of damage. I hate Leatherman doesnt build Juice S2's anymore. I think the Wingman is the closest current Leatherman product. I mean, outside blade, outside scissors, the toolset in itself is quite similar The Wingman is also quite a lot smaller and lighter compared to the Charge. It is however bulkier and heavier then the Juice S2. For me the Wingman is a good fit, but I did swap the blade for a straight Sidekick blade which I bought seperately. For size I like the Juice S2 better and some days I still carry it. On days I know on forehand I will use the multitool more, I carry the Charge TTi.

Nice video, but... you're not using the wire strippers correctly. Actually I haven't seen anyone on RUclips using them correctly. Steps: 1) Start with both handles "closed" 2) Open only the handle containing the wire stripper fully 3) Open the wire stripper until it locks into place 4) Grip the open handle with your right hand so that your thumb covers the wire stripper 5) Insert the wire into the wire stripper holding it with your left hand 6) Use your right thumb to press the wire against the wire stripper edge and pull the wire with your left hand. Best regards, and keep up the videos! :)

That method works well for larger wire, but I haven’t found it to be very effective on smaller wire myself. Thank you for the recommendation though.

This is my edc multitool , I want to change the blade out to a plain edge, what blade would fit in this? I’ve looked for sidekick blade but not easy to find. Would wave or surge work? I think a black surge blade would look really sharp in this.

I like the way you do your wire stripping, but to me it’s not practical. I do residential electrical work and 99% of the time I don’t have the space to rotate my tool, or can’t twist the wire itself. I’ve always stripped my wire holding it at 45 degree(roughly) and slicing away from you.

Why is it that MOST Leatherman all have the same tools. Wouldn’t it be better to add things like the package opener to the Wave Mk 2, or the Charge plus......... coz both of those are virtually the same !!! Mix it up abit !!! Leatherman is getting boring, they need to change around their tool design for once.

I must disagree with you about the package opener. I believe it is a gimmick. Package openers have only been around for maybe a decade.
I have used my knife blade to open packages my entire life. If the package opener was really relevant, Victornox would have brought them out 50 years ago.

    • @txtoolcrib
      @txtoolcrib  4 года назад +8

Fifty years ago, they didn't have blister packs. I think it is a bit obtuse of a statement to say that if something was relevant, Victorinox would have already come up with it. Victorinox, while I like their products, is not the end all be all. The package opener on the Wingman/Rev from Leatherman is no gimmick, I can assure you. It is a far safer and more effective instrument for opening up plastic packaging than any knife will ever be.
