    Kim does a different kind of art generally. He does a lot of live exhibitions where he doesn’t use a pencil. Jim spends most of his time doing highly polished comic books that require a pencil drawing first. These are two different approaches. They might as well have a football player and a basketball player do a basketball exhibition live. The football player may be the best football player ever but he is going to have a hard time against a professional basketball player playing basketball. If Jim spent his time doing the same kind of exhibitions without a pencil on a regular basis this would be a different showing.

    • @ElegeantFencer
      @ElegeantFencer 5 лет назад +13

      Their art styles are really different too. Can't really compare these two when their art exhibits such vastly different aesthetics/appeal factor. Both have a solid foundation for drawing, it's just that they go about it a different way from each other.

    • @thedeafgenius
      @thedeafgenius 5 лет назад +7

      I am shocked that you used pencil vs pen as your main debate when it should have been the fact that Kim has photographic memory and spent most of his early years sketching everything he saw while Jim most likely relies on reference pictures and experience.

    • @professorspectre5425
      @professorspectre5425 5 лет назад +35

      @@thedeafgenius Except Kim doesn't have a photographic memory. Watch any interview he's in and he will prove that fact. The simple fact of the matter is that Kim Jung Gi has spent more time drawing anything and everything to perfection, whereas Jim Lee has only mastered a certain style of illustration pertaining to a specific subject matter.

    • @professorspectre5425
      @professorspectre5425 5 лет назад +10

      Also adding to this. Does having a photographic memory necessarily mean you're going to be a good artist or a master like KJG? I may know (remember) what Batman looks like but that doesn't necessarily mean that I know how to draw him.

    : have a better reliable/comfortable drawing and interviewing setup/rig.
    : setup some cameras for a clearer, less awkard position, top down cameras to see it real-time.

    A lot of people on here seem to feel Jim was bested in this round. Apples and oranges. Gi is amazing at what he does and no one on earth can touch him but Jim Lee makes his characters distinctive and iconic and that is a God given talent that makes him still the king of comics. A better match up would have been Lee and Silvestri who both have similar approaches and skill.

      Drawing with Kim medium is quite harder to do (similar to pen and ink) because if there is a mistake, it cannot be retracted and or easily fixed. Where as pencil can be erased and fix again. Kim has properly mastered the pencil technique and onto the next level. Jim show us his mastery of comic book characters and etc. Jim probably done so many drawings of comic book characters and it's staple to his head. Kim only observed which give him a disadvantage on comic characters but his memory is profound and astonishing. Kim is on the level of Monet (French old Master) which uses memorization on images through their own experiences. Both are great but I would hand the trophy to Kim.

      tr1bes Ok all of that is irrelevant. I wasn’t trying to make it a competition like everyone in the comments, including you, seems to think it is. I was simply commenting on how poorly the event was set up and how they expected Jim to draw his best for a charity, and not even give him a back to his paper.

      Bobert Wiltshire Jim Lee’s a comic legend. Smh. It’s almost like asking to compare a splash illustrator to a concept designer, or prop designer to an environment artist. Different skillsets for different specialties that suit different personalities. It’s really just preference.
      Personally I like the finer details in Jims art. There’s an extra emphasis on posture and mood in much of his work, and an impactful use of negative space wherever he gives time to fill in values fully. Kim renders out the human form by simplifying much of the information into contours of the most necessary information, and fills in the blanks in details where or how necessary to make a convincing head on perspective shot. Though, he’s a lot more free form in compositional structure on the canvas.

    Lee had no back on the canvas for the last couple drawings. That would have messed me all up. for your next drawing... blindfolded!! 😂😂😂
    Mr Gi can disconnect himself from the people watching. The language barrier helps to strengthen the disconnect. He has laser focus on the drawing.
    I think Lee is used to a drawing desk with no distractions.

    Jim is an fantastic artist but he wasn't in his element. He can do some amazing dynamic art but he uses rough sketches to build his scene. That's why his drawings here look so stiff.
    Besides I'm sure he's used to a more calm/relaxed setting.

      Kim does many live exhibitions where he draws without a pencil. Jim spends most of his time doing highly polished comic book work that requires a pencil drawing first. If Jim spent as much time drawing live without a pencil you’d see a completely different showing here.
