    Some of your Vids must save people (Those willing to have a go) an absolute fortune in Labour costs Martin, plus your paying forward your knowledge in the form of handy tips. I wouldn't deny a proper Mechanic his charge, but it's not just money saving, it's the challenge of doing it yourself and resolving the issue that's the really satisfying feeling!
    Top man Martin, you really are a community minded chap!!

      Thanks bud. A garage would have thrown the part away and fitted a new one at great expense. No one repairs stuff any more and it's the customer who has to foot the bill so a saving like this is worth passing on.
      Cheers
      Martin

    Just found myself stuck in the middle of heavy Bristol traffic on my new van! Ahhhh! Lost 1st and 2nd completely for a moment, was a tad stressed to say the least! Found this video and feel much less stressed! Time to put my old man to some use! Fingers crossed. Nice one bud! Will post how it goes 👍

    Thanks so much for a very helpful video, it has sorted the problem on my son-in-laws Transit, and he was stuck and couldn't reverse. We got it into reverse manually then did a proper job to stop it happening again. Your very clear and easy to follow video was a huge help, you're a good guy, many thanks again. Steve.

    I love an easy fix that doesn't cost anything. You did the right thing by checking the selector mechanism and finding the problem before shelling out £££ on parts that you don't need.

    • @retrorestore

      Yes, If I would have followed the forums, I would have wasted money on gear cables.

    All I did was after watching this was used wd40 on the top selector and moved back and fro and eventually they all freed up and then some light oil on the shaft and no problems since. After seeing how fiddly it was. I wouldn’t have had a clue without your video though. Good man.

    De Ja Vue watching this video. This was the first of the many common problems with the MK6 I had to deal with. As everybody on the forums described, water getting past the seal rusting the roller bearings/shaft. Parts were quite cheap from Ford. Mine just suddenly started sticking, limped it home 30 miles in 3rd gear. Had to slip the clutch up to traffic lights very slowly. Luckily it was late in the evening so not much traffic on the road. I've had all the other common problems and fixed them myself, just the blasted rot now. Re tools, they suggested getting a long wobble bar so I did. Wonder just how many of us have gone through this? THANKS FORD.

    great video Martin thats a good maintenance fix without the need to replace parts which like you said online suggests changing the cables when thats not case here with yours and probably many others that are having the same trouble. thumbs up on this video as always and i look forward to the next video. its always great to see when you have uploaded whether its on this channel or your others.

    • @retrorestore

      Thanks Dave, I think that this is a common problem that people get wrong and fit new expensive cables when it is really the selector.

    I have the same problem on my Citroen Jumper/Relay aka Peugout boxer/Fiat ducato.
    For some reason the selector gets a lot of rust, i didn t have the chamce to remove it yet, i've done all the other checks on the cables and the gearstick, this is for sure the problem in 90% of cases.
    Hope more people see this so they don't spend extra money on workshops

    Well done Martin. Fantastic job! I have always had this problem with fords. Haven't driven anything else. Had a year 200 Fiesta reverse wasn't nice to get. And my mum has had focus' throughout the years and even they are crunchy. Has a 14 reg one and since new reverse doesn't go in convincingly. The new transits all have the lift reverse. At least my transit custom does. Lot nicer. Looking forward to your reliant videos 👍

    • @retrorestore
      @retrorestore  7 лет назад

      Thanks Greg, I would suggest that this is a very common problem that people think it's the cables but it's a simple fix and you can save plenty of money as a garage would just replace it at your expense.

    martin iv had to do this a couple times had the mec ontop of the gearbox the neddle bearing seized the same as u on the shaft most of the time u can get away without taking it off iv always make sure on every mk6 transit i wd40 tht shaft up on every now and then if you dnt use the van often rain water can drip and work its way down to the shaft and seize the bearing iside also always worth oiling up the cables on the underside of the van on gearstick end makes a smooth gear change 👍 good video :)

    • @retrorestore
      @retrorestore  7 лет назад +1

      It's a common problem I think Harry, I put grease around the top of the shaft as well but I was lucky to catch it before the bearings were shot.

    Good video Martin. Ford would replace cables 1 by 1 and then charge for that whole linkage. You would think they should have put a rubber boot over that to protect the shaft from the environment. Great fix and low cost. Snowing hard here all day and night. 10-15 cms.

    • @retrorestore
      @retrorestore  7 лет назад +2

      Any garage would just replace the whole part but it's an expensive part Bri and in my opinion, servicable. You can even get a new bearing and seal for the shaft. Saved a small fortune as well.
      Snow, wow, it's mild here.

    I had the problem were I could not select 1,2,4th and reverse. I have used 1/2 a can of WD40 and managed to be able to get it though all the gears with the engine off. As soon as I start the engine I have exactly the same problem. I managed to get the van home and to reverse it in by stopping engine and selecting reverse before restarting it. Has anyone any idea why it would work with the engine off but not with it running as it seems very strange?
    Brilliant video and thank you for uploading it - without this I would have been straight on to the RAC to recover it. Top Man

    Hi young man I stripped my gear selector a couple of years ago , on the middle of the shaft level with the bolt that drops out or breaks there is a small caged bearing , it is like a tube with micro ball bearings. The whole thing breaks up, at first it gets sticky the bearings cut rings in the shaft then they start dropping into the box and start chewing up the DIF The bearing would probably be better replaced by a bronze bush with inner and outer grooves to pick up oil splashed from the gearbox. All the parts are cheap from ford. The guy at Ford printed out the exploded view for me from his computer. It is common to find the bolt that falls out secured with a spot of weld because when it drops out it often gets trapped under the diff and punches a hole in the box BE LUCKY

    Managed to sort mine out by simply squirting the vertical shaft with WD and oil, as eventually some will find it's way down. It's probably a scrap yard job next year, so I don't want to do anything more than I have to. I have just done a front spring and am still recovering from that.

    this a common fault on the mk6 & mk7 transits
    it is due to water getting passed the select seal.
    the is a kit available on eBay with new bearings & seal for less than £20
    ford wanted me to buy a complete new selecter housing for £400
    so brought the kit of eBay and rebuild it not a bad job once you've done one
    great video anyway.

    Hi mate , great video , my mk7 has this problem it’s like I had to learn this individual gearbox but it’s like the shifters don’t align with the gears and I go to put it in first but the stick will drop and hang to the right ? But I can pretty much do a whole circle motion with my gear stick while it’s in gear … really weird as I have good clutch hydraulic pressure and it doesn’t seem to want to slip out of gear it just all happens through my stick and shifting is a nightmare sometimes if I ain’t concentrating on where to exactly angle the gear stick , do you think this is my problem mate ? Thanks!

    Hey @retrorestore Im attempting this over the weekend, do I need to unclip both cables ?? The one looks easy as it’s in front the one on the side looks a lot more difficult… can you shed some light also the bolts at the back what did you use to remove ??

    • @retrorestore
      @retrorestore  3 года назад

      I can;t remember, Try squirting the selector with wd40 first without removing it and see if that works. Put plenty in there and then keep moving the gear stick and see if that frees it off.

    Thanks Martin, nice repair! Would it have been possible to access the piston/shaft that needed lubrication without taking out the gear shift mechanism?

    • @retrorestore
      @retrorestore  4 года назад +1

      You could try spraying it with wd40 first but at least this way, you get to lube all of it and check for wear and damage.

    Same exactly issue on Toyota box. 2nd and reverse were bad. Lots squirts of hot 30 oil down there fixed it.

    I had the same on a mk7 a couple years in from new, the only gears I could get were 1&2nd - doing a 3 point turn wasn’t fun pushing it backwards and driving 10miles to the garage in 2nd haha

      Yes but if I would have listened to the forums, I would have bought new cables and still had the problem. A bit of fault finding solved the problem. Hopefully the vid will help others do the same.

      yeah,...do you or anyone know how much/pain in the arse it is to have the clutch master cylinder bled/new fluid?i think mines on its way out,clutch starts to bite just off the floor,could be expensive : (

      I have a similar problem. But in my case, the gears are working perfect when the engine is turned off. Only when I start the engine and try, first gear and reverse are very hard to get. It feels like something is "scrambled" down there... and the clutch feels very "short"...
      Any ideas?🙏

    • @retrorestore
      @retrorestore  2 года назад +1

      Sounds like clutch drag possibly to worn seals in either the master or slave cylinder. The slave cylinder is inside the bellhousing and its a gearbox out job. The master is at the pedal end and easier to get to. Might be worth trying to bleed the clutch system first.
