- Former Gossip Girl Taylor Momsen talks about The Pretty Reckless and their new album Light Me Up. So, where is her mindset between acting and music, what inspired "You"? Why did she record an organic rock record, while her contemporaries recorded processed pop?
I actually prefer her live vocals. While occasionally she does exhibit a slight lack of control, I absolutely love the raspyness of her voice, and the fact that she screams like a dude instead of singing in some watered-down bubblegum pop voice like every other female singer. The fact that her voice is not super polished and smooth as glass is what makes it unique and worth listening to in my opinion. It's just a matter of taste.
i honestly look up to taylor, because she left what she's been doing for ears to do what she wants...

When has she ever "compared" her music to the classics? She has said she's inspired by the classics, as 99.99% of artist are. Further more, she is also inspired by all of the '90's punk and grunge bands. Hence why this band is classified as post-grunge alt. rock. And how could you possible compare this band's music to maroon 5? I could maybe see early Avril, but maroon 5, a glorified boy band? I think not.
@sheilarocks2001 Yeaah lots of people give her too much shit bout her makeup and the way she dresses but I actually love it, I find it to be so rock n roll and its the way she is really. That is Taylor Momsen's style, so yeah :D

To all you goofballs arguing over whether the songs are literally about her life or are "lies", have any of you listened to any rock music? Or any music of any kind for that matter? Of course the songs aren't literal. Does anyone really think if she killed and mutilated a man that she would sing a song about it? Of course not! Music is a form of art, that's why people who make music are called artists. Music is poetry, its about expression and exploration. It's never meant to be taken literally
I can kind of understand where you're coming from. Yes post-grunge/post-punk is not the same as classic rock or hard rock. I myself find it irritating that it has been 18 years since Kurt Cobain died, and still no one can make a song without it sounding like him. That being said, it is my personal opinion that the members of this band are in fact quite talented, and her vocals, which are some of the most impressive female rock vocals I've ever heard, give this band a unique sound.

@britbaby777 well I don't think she is doing what it is "supposed to be". If she wants to do her own thing, she should be able too. That doesn't mean she has to follow the "rules" of rock and roll.
She might want to lose the cigarettes. Her voice does sound like it's drying out a bit.

I really like Taylor as a musician. But her smoking has affected her voice so much, I mean, her speaking voice sounds terrible and croaky, and it will only get worse. And every interview I watch is the same.....what she says

and just using your example of zeppelin, more than half of their songs are about or make reference to The Lord of the Rings. Literal?....not really.

I like her, yet it stumps me when she says: "No one's asked me about 'You' before, so I don't have a routine answer and I'm stumbling up." What the fuck? Shouldn't you just know naturally on how to answer about one of your songs? She wrote it. I thought her feelings would come more naturally and sincerely.
She has a talented voice! But the makeup, idk!
