Derrick, my Dad was an alcoholic with 17 years sober when he passed. We used to attend AA meetings with him and through that we learned how to work a 12 Step Program. I think your concept of achieving maturity once you become sober is bang on.
I am not religious but I often reach out for Serenity in times of trouble.
Grant me Serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the Courage to change the things I can and the Wisdom to know the difference.
Thank you for sharing your journey and Congratulations on your close to 8 years Sobriety.
Congratulations on your success. Being a drummer from Nashville. I was unable to go back into the bars to play after getting sober. I applaud you for being able to do that.
Always fascinated by peoples stories and how they get to where they are. You seem to have an inner strength you may not even be aware of. There are so many people pulling for you to continue a profitable and prosperous sober future. God Bless.
You have been a huge help for my son. I started by having him listen to your videos with me then he was asking me to send him new ones and now he’s talking about going to Councling. He hasn’t committed to it yet but he’s talking about it. I can’t thank you enough.
Derrick, I got to your channel via your mom’s. Kudos to you for owning your journey and especially sharing it here. As a 70 YO mother and grandmother I’ve never had a drug-related addiction; mostly an addiction to being invisible from being the middle child. So that means not goal oriented , and not ever wanting to be the center of attention. That has it’s own level of societal disfunction. Your videos are helpful on so many levels and potentially to so many people struggling with everyday issues. To live your life ON PURPOSE, I think, is the most powerful message anyone could hear. And YOU are a shining example!😘
I struggle with an addiction to food. Sometimes I wish it was anything else. For me it would be so easy to stop something cold turkey. But you cant quit eating food altogether. Grass is always greener I know. But listening to you makes me feel better.
I swear Derrick, you should be on Ted Talks. You have such an amazing way of speaking to us. And you've lived the life. I am so proud and happy for you!!! ❤️🤗
You would be a fantastic speaker at a rehab center or AA meetings, if that’s even something you would be interested in. You have a knack for engaging your audience. Listeners are able to detect honesty and sincerity, and the way you share your past is very relatable and unpretentious. You’d be a great mentor.
Absolutely he has a great non preachy way
That’s soo awesome.8 years sober.😇
Your series has been very beneficial. Im sort of at a loss for words but it has helped me to sort out a few issues as far back as my childhood. Im looking forward to your next visit with us. Thank you.
I have a son struggling bad now if anyone please pray. Derrick, good for you, that's been rough.
My son also. I know how you feel. I pray and cry for my son everyday and I will pray for yours too. 🙏
Sharrose and Karen - I pray for both of you. My daughter was addicted to very hard drugs and I thought we lost her. I am happy to say she is 6 years clean and leading a happy and productive life. All of the glory goes to God. I pray that you are able to have peace and your children overcome their addictions and struggles. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Will pray for your son and especially in my rosary today, it's heart wrenching
Thank you Chris! God bless
Thank you Chris. 🙏
Your willingness to be so transparent and your calm, clear way of telling your story are just amazing. Thanks for stepping up.
Entering rehab for the second time, you made a conscious decision to take your self and your life seriously. You didn't have the necessary tools to beat the addiction on your own beforehand, rehab taught you new skills, and you put them into practice even if you didn't consciously realise it. It would have been an awful shame not to have benefitted from your rehab experience, Derrick, you definitely took everything on board and with a clear head you made huge changes in your life. I am so happy that you did. You remain socially awkward...and that's ok, there are a lot of us around 😉 You are an excellent role model for your Daughter, proving that with serious determination, anything is possible, nothing is out of reach. Congratulations my friend. 😘
Derrick, your story sharing is so on point. Your relaxed style of telling unvarnished truths hits at 100%. Thank you for “leaning in”!
I can’t imagine what you have gone thru making these videos, but I know you are a better man for doing them. My Husband was an alcoholic, later had a boyfriend who had went thru rehab for drugs. He always talked about his experiences and helped quite a few people. Again as I said on your first video, admiration for you at the highest!
You should be very proud of the man you've become..you've overcome great hurdles and came out the other side an amazing person. I know of a family man that could use these videos to learn from and see that there is a better life after drinking. Thank you for sharing.
You were so gutsy to go back to music knowing the atmosphere. My fam has problems with alcohol. I quit at 31 and the fun part was how much it annoyed my Dad ... 😂😂😂😂😂😂 I am an ACOA but always hated the taste of the stuff. I was exposed to it at a very young age from my Dad's drinks of Sea and 7 but at about 5 years old he cut me off. 😂😂 I never drank underage. My Mom thot alcoholics are allergic to the stuff and very attracted to it. Ppl said to me, what do you like to drink? I'm like, none of it. They suggested this and that and I told them, I don't want to find something I like. Lol So glad you're doing so well.
Thank you for this series on how you got sober Derrick, and life since! You are a Great inspiration to many and you are doing so well!! Even the worst of times sober are better than the best of times not! Bravo, and here's to a Blessed sober today and every tomorrow. 👍👍🙏👊
watched and listened to your story when I'm at the gym. really appreciate it. thank you!
Thanks Derrick for SHARING this viedo. Helps me understand things better. In my daughters life what she's been through. She's not talking much to me about it all. So now I can gain from your experience thank you.
Congratulations!!! Major miracle!! Never ever give up. It's so easy to drink. It takes brass balls to be sober . I am so er by God's grace since 1990. Recovery rocks!
Good series, Derrick. I am currently struggling and your advice helped me today. Thank you!
The Serenity Prayer
God grant me the serenity To accept the things I cannot change; Courage to change the things I can; And wisdom to know the difference. Living one day at a time; Enjoying one moment at a time; Accepting hardships as the pathway to peace; Taking, as He did, this sinful world As it is, not as I would have it; Trusting that He will make all things right If I surrender to His Will; So that I may be reasonably happy in this life And supremely happy with Him Forever and ever in the next. Amen.
Derrick you are an amazing young man. You’re about the age of my son. God bless and keep you. I enjoy listening to you.
So impressed with this series and hearing where you started and how far you have come. You're inner strength sure has come through and brought you to a good place. May you always stay strong and safe in the future. One Day at a Time! .... Love that song. Take care and have a great week. 🤗
Ive watched all 3 uploads . It's been very inspirational. Well done with your sobriety.
Welldone Derrick. I love how you took control and the will to say that you can be around people friends that drink and have the strong will to say I will not drink. Even the rehab you seeked help and took ownership to be healed bravo👌
thank you for the support
Awesome trilogy of videos . Thank you 🙏
I think it’s hard to be comfortable with yourself. To be content with the decisions you’ve made is everything.
Thank you for sharing your story, I am struggling with this now and it helped listening to your journey from then to now. Gives me hope I can do this.
Fair play to ya Derrick, your an inspiration,
Thank you for sharing your story
Thank you for sharing your experience and vulnerability with us. Even though it's not one I can relate to, I am able to find empathy and understanding in hearing it.
You should feel proud for facing and working through your addiction and building the life that you have on the other side of it. 👏👏👏
Thanks for sharing Derrick, i watched all 3 parts and brother you have gone through an experience. I am getting ready to hit my 1 year sobriety mark here on 9/20/22 myself. And it's been hard, i can relate a lot to your story. Especially since I am a musician myself that plays bars and clubs. I usually take off and go home right after the gig and not hang around. So at least you hung out in the suburban, my band mates don't get that ha ha! Thanks again for sharing your story.
Really appreciate you sharing your story.i can relate to so much you spoke about.coming up on 3 years myself.regards from Ireland.Thank you 👍
Hi Derrick , greetings from Dublin Ireland, I’m just about to enter rehab, very nervous but watching your channel is helping me so much xx thank you 🙏
Loved this series man. You're a really good speaker. I'm 3 years 4 months sober myself, been through a similar journey, really cool listening to this
You are a brave man. Thnks for sharing. Our son is in a va rehab right now. You give me hope
Hey Derek, I loved your story, seen all 3 videos, very genuine and really interesting, I’m on a relapse atm but want to go the same as you, quitting this tiresome alcohol
Derrick, are you concerned about Skylar developing an alcohol addition if she ever starts drinking? Do you have conversations with her about it? I rarely drink because alcoholism (addictive personalities?) run in my family. Thanks for your honesty and openness. I’m sure you’ve helped people.
Your advice also applies to other psychological problems. I am encouraged to step up without sorry excuses to do what I want and need to do. I guess my addiction has been over thinking so not taking chances no matter how well thought out. Thank you so much.
Thanks for sharing how you're moving on in your life since quitting drinking almost 8 years ago. I wish you all the best. Take care.
You do very very well just freestyling your way through this and telling your story... without planning it or outlining or whatever. Sooooo accessible, humble, and honest. Great job.
Thank you for sharing!!
Inspiring story brother - well done!
Thanks Derick, Your Videos are helping a big amount, I am still drinking … I will manage to stop !!
God Bless you!
Just finished watching ur 3 part series on alcoholism. You r a great storyteller. You have a way of drawing people in with ur words and we become entranced. You should seriously consider becoming a motivational speaker.
Been There
Thanks for sharing 👍
Great vlogs I gave up being a chain smoker over a month ago And gave up being a heavy drinker for nearly forty years over a week ago Living in Thailand doesn't he help Because cigarettes and spirit's are dirt cheap here Had some pressure off my partner But I had lost two good friends recently due to alcohol
How was your music different during your shows - being sober?
Bravo!!!!!!
Your honesty is key and #1thing that's gonna help soooooo many ! Thank you sir❤
Dude, I did a 30 day rehab on alcohol. Similar to ur experience. AA helps. Best of luck. Paul
Great video thank you so much 👍
That was awesome. Thank you so much for sharing :)
God Bless
you should play music with people who are sober look around there people like us XXX
🥰👏🏼👏🏼
Yep, the 'new normal', working so hard to get there and guess what? Nobody congratulates ''normal.''
Except the people at certain programs, where I need to go when I've had about all of "normal" people I can stand. I can't stand drunks at all.
I have social anxiety myself
Wow that's good. The sober you is only 8 years old. 🤔
Around here, it seems as if all too many re-hab's deem folks "cured", ready to find a 12 step program to get themselves to, and slay dragons in thier new world of sobriety; more often than not without a job and with poor prospects to get a job.
