ive been watching this anime for the first time lately, and its scenes and episodes like this that just blow me awayyyy. This show is art. I love nujabes.
This was the scene that sent me on the hunt to figure out what music I had just heard and led to discovering Nujabes.. and over 10 years later, chillhop / instrumental hip hop remains one of my favorite genres of music.
Best standalone episode of the show. It encapsulates everything samurai champloo does so well while managing to tell a compelling love story with mere minutes of dialogue between the characters. You don’t need an excess of time or backstory to build compelling characters, sometimes all it takes is some nujabes.
This was probably one of the best episodes in the entire show. The episode starts on a very depressing note, no music, just rain, and two people talking on a bridge, a woman potentially thinking about taking her own life. The episode ends with a rescue scene, to the tune of one of the best songs in the OST, a heartbreaking and sudden goodbye, and a woman getting back her own life.
Do you want some good news about the final conclusion... In the final episode of the series, they show montages of everyone going their ways. You see Jin walking by this same river bank in his final scene in the montages. Which leads me to believe, he came back and is waiting for her.
GENIUS composition! the MUSIC, the transition of night into morning ,the zooming out during the boat departure, the last shot showing the end of the long rain-- a new clear day. Brilliant work.
No one is posting about Jin as he watches her drift away on the boat? He has no change in expression but you know that he admires that moment to be one of his best acts of benevolence, or Jin. It is such a beautiful scene, so much so that it didn't need any words... RIP seba jun
This episode is what made the show go from really good to great imo. Has me teary eyed every time she reaches out to jin only to come up short. Jin knows he can’t go with her because he made a promise to fuu, but he will surely come back for her
Man... Counting Stars really sets the mood for this scene. I remember listening to it while exploring the temples near my apartment in japan during the sunset and the soundtrack just fits in.
This is probably one of my favorite scenes in all of entertainment. Nearly brings me to tears with how beautiful the atmosphere of it is, partially attributed to nujabes producing and the amazing story telling this show has throughout. I’ve rewatched hundreds of times and it remains one of my favorite anime scenes of all time
Always breaks my heart to see Shino reach out to Jin, and Jin's reaction to that. It's almost like he knew and understood how he felt about Shino but didn't know or understand how she felt about him.
I just finished watching this episode(I started watching the series when it came out on Toonami back in January)and I can say this is my favorite episode so far. I hope Jin sees her again one day.
Shino's theme is just the song that plays on this chapter. Some fan removed the voices and looped the song and called it Shino's Theme. Counting stars is the original song (which is a version of Affirmation by Jose Feliciano). Than he did this version for Samurai Champloo, both are the same, but SC is a little bit versioned.
and just you wait, your comment is 1 year old right now, but in the future yours and mine will be like years old already, and who knows who what type of person we will be then.
While the episode ends on a bitter sweet note, I think they will eventually have their happy ending. Shino said the refuge for positiutes would be able to keep her safe for 3 years, after which she would be legally free. So, in 3 years time, Jin and Shino will reunite. ♥️
Its not a refuge for prostitutes, its a Buddhist 'divorce temple'. Back before there were formal laws allowing a woman to divorce her (especially abusive) husband in Japan, these existed. They were a place a woman who wanted a divorce had to stay for 3 years, then she was legally free of the marriage. It was essentially the place that protected women like Shino in those times. (She got sold into prostitution by her shithead abusive husband to pay back his gambling debts.)
@@ingvanya Its a Shinto Temple. Not a Buddhist Temple. That's a Front for Battered and Abused Women. Also, Her Husband didn't just sell her into prosecution. He Literally BRIBED Her Parents.
@Tornado1994 where they sent her has no connection to anyone's religion. I said that where they Sent her was a Buddhist 'divorce temple'. I promise I researched Japan's 'divorce temples' in history before I made my comment.

Aside from a few scenes in "5 cm per second" and a couple of touching moments in "Welcome To The NHK", this has got to be one of the most poetic scenes in arthouse anime.
i started crying the moment i heard the bgm. this song held such a special place in my heart i never knew it was part of samurai champloo ost holy shit
I think they're going between Counting Stars and Shino's Theme. Both pieces are different but the way they interchange them here is really cool. If you listen, you can hear the change in song. They go back and forth. I've listened to both extensively and I really do think that they're switching back and forth. But of course, I could be wrong. lol Either way, I adore this anime, I adore this song (or songs, depending on whether or not I'm right), and I ADORE Nujabes. Thanks for the upload

@GoldAngel7 its a different side, but the same side at the same time. I have so much respect for this character. Having both strength and humility is the true hero.

I have so much respect for Jin for not just doing this, but turning her in the river alone and being Stoic about it, and carrying on with life. My generation and countrymen of Americans today are utterly embarrassing believing happiness is something that can be not only achieved, but can be consistent throughout life, and always getting your way. In reality, life is much more like this episode. He risked his life saving her and in the end, the only thing he got was satisfaction of knowing she didn't have to be an involuntary prostitute anymore, didn't even get to make love to her. In the end, his stoic face takes so much strength. For My Millennials and gen Z folks, stoicism is not men can't feel emotion, its about men controlling emotion and being in control. Whatever feminists tell you, cry in front of them and ALL respect and attraction goes out the window forever. Its a trap. So remain or learn stoicism and the art of silence. They respect it, they're attracted to it. Shinō knows Jin loves her. Jin gave her the most important gift one can give, her freedom. She'll never forget Jin regardless what happens in her life. Such a damn good episode, especially Japanese dub.
