First Southern Bluefin Tuna Ever Caught from a Kayak in New Zealand

- With no tuna being caught on my first trip to Taranaki, I had to make a return journey to have another go at the extremely rare southern bluefin tuna run down the West Coast of New Zealand's North Island.
By the second day of this 3-day trip I was well and truly at breaking point (following 3 previous days of 50, 40 and 50km paddles), but somehow I found it in me to push on, and I'm glad I did - I landed the first ever southern bluefin tuna caught from a kayak in New Zealand. Another dream fish ticked off on my kayak fishing adventures! Can't wait for the next one.

Well done Greg. Catching a Southern Bluefin Tuna from a kayak is a massive achievement by any measure.
Thanks very much Allan
So good
Love catching them from the kayak!
Mate - just found this one. Mental episode and what an achievement.
Cheers mate! Definitely one of my most memorable catches. The stoke was real!!
Another exciting epic video GP 🙏👏 keep them coming 🎣 looking forward to more vids.
Thank you bro!! Plenty more coming soon
Nice one dude! My brother just spent $400 on a new tuna rod and you're out here landing one on the Uglystik! I love it!
Thanks mate!! Yeah like a $100 rod too 😂 I won't use anything but Ugly Stik for the heavy stuff... they're indestructible
Fark that is a beauty fish! just rewards for all the km's you are putting in! Well done!!!
Thanks Kerry!! Never been so stoked to see a fish come up next to the yak. The uncertainty the whole fight of what it was, and then to finally see it... man, so great.
Dave, haha naming your releases , I love it
he looked like a Dave to me 😂
Best man kayak fishing in NZ👏👏👏 well done
Thank you!!
Stoked az for you! Awesome content, great watching
Cheers mate!! Appreciate it 🤙🏽🤙🏽
Exciting watching that Greg, well done !
Thanks Miles!!
Fantastic Greg. Well done mate!
Thanks Rob!
Cracker of video...enough content to do three vids lol....love the emotions and honesty of showing the way you handle the multiple lines ....those kahawai were huge and Mackeral...crikey then the icing on the cake the PB SBT..that gaff shot was gold!! Congrats on a epic adventure and putting in a ton of Mahi!!
Thanks Nigel!! Definitely got very messy with the multiple lines, but managed to make it work 😂 with my gaffing history, it was a miracle I hit it first shot haha
great work on that tuna Greg! not everyday u get to land a bluefine tuna plus that underwater shot of the kingfish school was epic as
Thanks Peter!! The kingfish were amazing
Epic! Awesome catch and these schools of kingies.. oh my... what a dream!
Thank you!! Dreamy alright. Don't often see fish schooling like that under the yak, so it was a real treat
Southern BLUEFIN TUNA!!!!!!! Dude, I wish I had access to that type of fishing, un-freakn-believable!! Another once in a lifetime moment for you on the water, cheers!
Where do you live man? I usually drive 4-6 hours to get to these sorts of places 😂
@@gpfishingadventures7834 I'm in CT in the USA, I drive to myrtle beach and do king fishing every October, 14 hours 😆 🤣
@@moe.ron4life399 Jesus mate that's rough!
@@gpfishingadventures7834 I love it so much its no worry, when I get a smoker king and the line is hot ..thats what I live for some days
Well done man ! Really superb !!! I knew you were gonna get one !!👍👍🙌🙌
Thanks Min 🤙🏽😊
Maaaaate! What a ride, start to finish! Epic catch, get reward for all your mahi!
Thanks Matt!!
Awesome man. Massive effort and got the one you were after. You can tell you were fizzing.
PS: You and those trebles were giving me anxiety hard out 😂😂🤘🤘
Thanks mate! Yeah hard to keep the excitement under control once I realised what it was! Haha you're not the only one to say that about the trebles 😂😂😂 you can tell I don't fish with them often.
Man you should have more subs ,awesome fishing mate great content
Thanks mate!! All in good time I guess
Wow awesome man your so lucky to do things like that, i wish I could do something like this but can't afford kayak and fishing gears. I really enjoyed watching fishing from kayak, Kiakaha Matua 😀
Thank you!! Hopefully one day you will be able to get into the sport. Where are you based?
Awesome work mate, you really earned that fish. Can really feel the excitement too when you got it close enough to see it was a SBT. Keep it up!
Thanks Glen! Yeah the anticipation that whole fight was unreal... to finally see that it was a SBT was incredible. P.s. you'll have to teach me how to fish the Manukau one day! I grew up fishing at our place at Awhitu, but still yet to land a snapper bigger than 30cm there 😂
@@gpfishingadventures7834 I'm a bit out of touch with the Manukau these days but it can be a real gem if you put the time in to learn it... the currents aren't very kayak friendly though but judging by the distance you paddled in this video you've got the arms to do it haha
@@GCJetskiFishing Yeah it can be a bit tricky to paddle. I've done it a couple of times now and went from Awhitu out to Paratutae and below the lighthouse. The thought of crossing the bar on a good day is tempting... but I think I'll probably give that a miss.
Congrats mate, pretty epic fishing there in NZ!
Cheers! We're spoilt here
Excellent. Congratulations on the blue fin. 👏🙌👍
Three suggestions:
1. Always retrieve the second line in after got the hooked up on the first line. Sometime, those crossed lines can cost you the fish.
2. If the fish is hooked on a single hook (no free hook swinging free) then always open the reel bail when bring your fish on board the kayak while the hook still in the fish mouth.
3. If the fish is hooked on a lure (with another hook swinging free ) then I would stun the fish first with a spear or knife through head to take it out then remove the lure (with a free swinging hook) from the fish before bringing the fish on board. That will avoid the situation the fish flops around and hook me by accident. Seems too many of those accident in 30 years of offshore fishing.
Wish I can fish in your area too. 🙏
Thanks for these words of advice!! Where are you based? If you ever get the chance to fish in New Zealand, take it!
@@gpfishingadventures7834 my local fishing area is the Gulf of Mexico in Texas, USA….. yes, it will be a dream to fish in your fishing backyard
@@vxphan2601 awesome mate! Let me know if you're ever in this neck of the woods 🤙🏽
Well done. That is so cool.
Thanks Paul!
Yeayah! What a session mate, wicked stuff!
Thanks Brad!! Certainly was a productive weekend out there
@@gpfishingadventures7834 sure was! Good to nail this one after the marlin. Congrats 😊
@@PaddleswithBraddles cheers mate!
Epic fish mate, well deserved 👍
thanks bro!
incredible! Congrats sir!
Thank you!!
Epic bro! well done
Thank you!!!
Awesome video mate
Thanks mate!
Mate your killing it🤙😎
Thanks mate!!
Your a machine Greg yeow 🤙Knew someone was going to crack one. Knew in the final clip as soon as you'd hooked it, it was a tuna. First run was way too quick and long for a kingfish or a kahawai. I see you didn't clear all your lines in order to get onto the fish quicker , so good effort keeping them all out of the way. I just fish two rods and burn the other one in so I'm clear when I've hooked the albies. Cheeky Yellowfin out of waihau next? haha
Cheers mate!! Yeah I suspected it was a tuna from the get go, but didn't want to call it since I hadn't caught one before and wasn't 100% sure.
Nah didn't clear the lines as I didn't want to risk dropping the fish! Lines were out quite far so would have taken a while... fortunately it all worked out 😅
Not sure what's next tbh, will have a crack at Waihau soon for sure.
Awesome effort, beautiful
Thanks!
love the moment you clicked hahah priceless bro
Best feeling ever!
Such a cool video bro! What rapalas were you using?
Cheers! CD-14. I think the colour is firetiger or something 👍🏽
You made it very complicated for yourself with so many lures n lines out. Nice catch.
Thanks for the reminder 😂
@@gpfishingadventures7834 do as you do it seems to be working for ya it's just my ocd
Way to go big tuna
BIG TUNA!
What was it like to eat? I was about 6km out near Whangamata yesterday and had small tuna jumping around me, couldn't hook one though.
Hands down best fish I've ever eaten. We ate it mostly sashimi, but also did some steaks which were divine. Also smoked up a bit, which was solid too.
Awesome
Woohoo nice, what beach did you launch from? Around the cape somewhere
Thanks! Just North of the Cape the first day, then North NP the second day 👍🏽
@@gpfishingadventures7834 ah cool I think I know where the 1st launch is. Just trying to find new launch spots, my main ground is Ohawe. Yours vids are so good, check out mine if you have time, 1st one, most the time forgot to turn on the go pro lol.
@@whittakertable Awesome mate. DM me on instagram and I can tell you where it was if you like. Just watched you vid - some nice snapper in there!! Especially that big one. Would love to paddle down in your neck of the woods one of these days. Will definitely make the journey down at some stage this year, I'm sure...
@@gpfishingadventures7834 haha thanks was a shit vid but thank you. Yeah some good fish out there and you don’t have to go far either.
Bro unreal man, what sunnies u using?
Thanks man! Oakley Radars. I've had them for 11 years and they only recently broke after this trip. Really like them and have replaced them with the newer model.
Ka mau te pai bro, did the mahi got the results.
Thanks mate. A lot of mahi went into this one, that's for sure...
Mean.
which beach do you go out with the kayak?
a lot of beaches 😂do you mean in this video?
