- In this week's video we are working on a new vehicle to the channel. I will be showing how to replace spark plugs on a 2018 Jeep Grand Cherokee WK2 with the 3.6 V6 engine. This video will show the whole process from start to finish. This process may be very similar across other Jeep, Dodge, and Chrysler models that have the 3.6 Pentastar engine. If you have any questions or comments please post below. Make sure to like and subscribe for more how-to content!

I could have done this job without watching this video but you made it easy for me. It’s nice to know exactly what you need or don’t need to remove. Thanks. And thanks for the professionalism. I hate when guys try to be comedians and mechanics.
This is one of the best videos I have seen tackling this project. The sound and video quality were great. Not too much BS during the actual work and showing the removal of all screws, etc. (but I liked that you showed each coil as a couple had variation). I also liked that you left in the bad parts (missing parts, dropped bolts, etc). I would recommend cleaning the internal part of the throttle body as well. Thanks! I'm going to do this one today!
Brother is on point...! He knows what he's talking about, even the areas where brackets and parts are missing from the previous "technician". If you're looking for a step-by-step guide to get you through this complicated maintenance action, you need to watch this and have it handy as you're doing it yourself. I had my phone propped up and went right along with him as he did it. If you follow everything he says, you CANNOT mess this up. The only thing I did differently is regarding the bracket over the most rear coil on the driver's side. I was able to remove the coil pretty easily without removing the bracket.
Good job Sir...
I'm at 93k on my 3.6. Just bought all the plugs. Also, an oil change. Glade, I watched this. Definitely saving money by watching this. Sucks cars aren't made to last these days. I'm so glad old cars still exist
Thank you so much for making this video. I just changed the spark plugs on my wife's 2018 Dodge Durango which has the same engine. Fixed her throttle issues immediately and saved me a ton of money. Would not have even attempted it if it wasn't for your video. So thank you again very much!
I appreciate guys like this who don't take shortcuts and always pay attention to detail. After a house, a car is the next most expensive thing you might buy, so having a guy you can trust like this guy is awesome
Finished mine in 3 hrs following this video! Thanks!! That bracket over the back coil was the hardest part for me.
WOW!!
You are absolutely amazing!
Since I don’t go to STEALER-SHIPS, and am proud of myself for mastering the art of changing my own oil … I’ve learned a lot from
The s excellent video.
I now realize when my 2015 Jeep GC 3.6 Pentstar needs new spark plugs … it’s time to sell it!😢
After viewing your video I think I will tackle the plugs on my 2017 Trailhawk. Thanks! You saved me about $600. The book said it was about a three hour job, bet I can take at least five to do it 🙂
How did it go? I'm looking to do the same on my trailhawk.
This is by far one of the best help videos I have ever watched. I had a bad ignitions coil, this video was a ton of help…. All information was thorough, and was from start to finish. Thank you, video was a ton of help for me
Awesome video Austin, all of the stuff left off by the previous mechanic is why it pays to do it yourself and your video gives me the confidence to do it!!
Great video Austin. After watching all that work, makes me appreciate how simple my 99 XJ is to work on. 🙂
Thanks! I agree, there is a lot more stuff going on than the simple 4.0L.
Very thorough, it's a lot of work for plugs, but made easier thanks to the quality of this video. Went well, saved a few hundred.
Very clear step by step. You helped me decide that even I could replace the injectors on my 2020 GC myself, I really don't want to. A mechanic looked at it for running rough and said #6 injector had a 2 million pulse width (strange) so maybe its shorting out, but he seemed to be completely guessing and I don't have any confidence in him
Followed to a T! Got my spark plugs replaced with no hiccups! THANK YOU🙌🏼
All the clips! Some break! And they all work differently! Ahh!! Solenoid is the water cooled EGR valve by the TB.
Ok done. Took me 5 hrs and 4 trips to store because of missing tools and leaking camshaft sensor. It's good to change pcv valve as well since access is much easier with manifold off.
Without this video i would probably break something trying to remove manifold 😂. Thanks again. Saved me few hundred $
Great tutorial ! I needed to change the #1 coil, so I changed all the plugs while I was in there. I never would have attempted this without following your video. Thanks!
@Jeff James yes P301 code. Scary running on 5 cylinders until I got home! Replaced the coil and all 6 plugs. Runs great now.
@@jeffjames9568 Yes it was very rough, like it had a bad piston misfire. I was about 12 miles from home and 22 miles to the nearest dealer. Limped home keeping it at a higher RPM with the least vibration using my manual shift positions.
@@jeffjames9568 It will come off. Try not to break all the insert clips. Use black Tie Wraps if the fasteners are broken during reassembly. Don't forget the rear Vacuum hose like I did.
Which in is coil pack 1?
@@eeeranch It's been a long time, but I recall it being the driver's side front.
At 5:05 in your video I was doing the same exact thing you did and my clip also broke. I thought that was too funny. I had to share it. Your video is very, very helpful.
Thank you so much for the helpful video. Had it done in less than 2 hours. Great job on the video!!!
I used this video as a reference, all in all it’s a great video. Some of the bolt are the little plastic retainers(clips) that’ll mess up in order to do this job. As long as you don’t destroy them they are reuseable and won’t make any rattling sounds once finished.
Great video, thank you. Saved me a couple of hundred dollars doing it myself . I have a 16 jeep Cherokee, everything worked to a tee!
Hear hear - this is a must-see for anyone deciding whether to tackle changing the sparks in their 3.6 Pentastar-equipped Grand Cherokee. This is not a simple job - I would have been lost without this. Austin, if I could make a request for a future video: A how-to on swapping out the variable valve lift solenoids on a 3.6 Pentastar. They sit on top of the cylinders - it's job you could do after stripping down the engine the same way you did for the spark plugs. But the connectors on those are tricky and advice on how to diagnose problems and get those out without causing damage would be much appreciated.
I'll look into doing those! Thanks
I watched your video for reference and it really helped me out! Took me 4 hours to complete. THANK YOU for uploading this!
Thanks for the tutorial nice work now I’m gonna tackle my Jeep.
Followed directions but had a heavy hand. while disconnecting the breather tube going to the back of the engine, I pulled it a bit too fat and cracked the PCV valve. After putting the parts back together and going on a road test The service engine light came back on, then the warning light for the traction control flashed red! I found that driving back to the garage the vehicle went into "LIMP MODE", causing me to drive back at 35 MPH with the pedal to the floor!
Had a bunch of diagnostics codes pop up! The main one was a vacuum leak! Since we did NOT change the rings on the intake - we assumed that was the cause.
We took the entire thing back down, changed out the rings, torqued the manifold to 74-inch pounds, and still had the same issues. Finally found a tiny crack in the PCV valve.
We replaced the valve, cleared the codes, and the 3.6 was running smoothly!
Be really careful when pulling on the PCV TUBE because the valve is all lightweight plastic! LESSON LEARNED!
PCV valves should also get replaced every so often as well. They can get dirty and not work that great over time. Glad you figured out the issue!
I'm so glad I'm reading this...thank you thank you for the warning...haven't tackled mine as yet..but will pretty soon..just looking at videos to get an idea....now I know what to do and what NOT to do..
Excellent video! Thank you for your time and patience in making this helpful video.
Great video. I will be doing this to my '17 GC over the holidays.
thank you for this video I learned a lot.
Thanks. Ya had me at 4.0L "straight six". Subscribed. Got a '16WK2 going to do this with. Good vehicle . . . Well over 100,000 miles. Still strong. Just needs a spark plug change.
After watching this video, I think I’ll have someone else replace my plugs. Why can’t manufacturers figure out how to make electrical and mechanical connectors that don’t brake and become as dry as a popcorn fart after 70k miles?
I have just been quoted $700 to do plugs on my 2016 Grand Cherokee. That doesn't include anything that gets broken while plugs are being replaced. Jeep as well as other vehicle manufacturers don't want you working on your vehicle and make it as hard as possible to do any regular maintenance. By the way tranny service on the same vehicle is $1300. I will never buy another Jeep ever again.
It’s not gonna be much better on anything else lol
@@mralapenosarespicy From the day I drove it off the dealership lot I work on everything myself. The dealership hasn't seen this vehicle since new. Got 130K miles on it as of today and everything is working just fine.
@@Superbonker-np6iznot sure where you are located but I had the dealership in Castle Rock, CO do the trans fluid and replacement pan/filter for $880. $1300 is ridiculous. That sucks.
@@bent7131 $880 is still outrages amount of money. I remember times when tranny service was $180 (2005 Saturn Vue) by the way I'm in Texas.
Great video, it helped me tremendously. Do you have a link for replacement for that 10mm bolt you dropped, I lost the same exact one
Awesome Video! Really detailed and to the point.
Thanks man I will do mine soon
Great video. Very helpful. Watch video in steps with earbuds in. Thanks again!
Thank you so much!!! Your step by step was on point!
Dude excellent video. Thank you
Dude this channel is solid! This guy needs more subscribers
Got it done great video thank you
Need to change the hard side SP's on my 2016. Nice job!
great guide, great job
very good video!! helped me a lot! May Jesus Christ bless you always.
Super good video 👍
Good instructional video! Thanks!
Great tutorial, followed all the steps and did a great job and save some money , thanks for sharing.
Thanks! Great video!
Thank you for your video. It is really helpful when I need to replace the spark plug. It seems like you have VVT solenoid seal has oil leak. Any more video to replace the seal?
Not at the moment. I didn't notice it was leaking or looked wet till you pointed it out and I rewatched the video.
Good job
Excellent video.
Thank you 🙌
Thanks i was able to fix my cylinder 5 misfire. Not as hard as it looks!
Bad ass got it right from a-z
Thanks!!
Very thorough video! I'm in the market for this year range GC. Would you recommend them? Some Jeep models get poor reliability reviews.
Forsure, it's been a great vehicle so far. Only had it for about 5 months so far.
I've had a 13 and it was reliable never had any real issues except a wheel bearing at 50,000. I now have an 18 that I bought new and it's been amazing. Now have 93,000 miles on it with no issues at all. 14s had some electrical issues but other than that they are great vehicles.
Another outstanding informative video Austin.
It looks like who ever worked on it before used some coil packs from a junkyard on the driver side.
Thanks, I cleaned up the coils before I reinstalled them so that's why they may have looked newer.
What could you use to clean the dust and grim of the intake so on and so forth after you remove it?
Sir is there anyway you could provide all the tools required for the job? Thank you so much! Awesome video btw
A basic socket set, screwdrivers, wrenches, and spark plug socket is all you need.
I am not looking forward to it but i guess ill do it this weekend. The mechanic wants 750$ cad for it. Even if it takes my whole day its worth it. Thanks I appreciate the video
What did you do about the 3 little tabs on the egr return insert?
Which one is the cylinder 1/3/5, the driver side?. Hopefully so I dont need to remove my intake manifold :DDD
That little bit of oil on top of the valve covers is fine?
I have a 2017 Jeep grand Cherokee Laredo what should my spark plugs be gap to 3.6
I appreciate this video, but i wish the person who worked on this engine before you did had put everything back in place, so it would've been easier for me to follow what you did, but now I'm scared to touch my dodge durango 2018
little electric tape inside sockets helps for sketchy bolts!
Hi Austin! My husband has a 2018 Jeep Grand Cherokee Trackhawk and he is wanting to change the sparkles himself. Is this process similar? Does the different engine matter much? Thank you!
Yes a different engine would be a different replacing process. This video only helps if you have the 3.6L V6 engine.
Gracias
Whats the which 1 is number 3, I'm getting a p0303 code & I'm hoping it's just the coil.
What is that engine foam piece Mopar #? Also, that sludge buildup piece was for the EGR valve.
Not sure on the foam piece. You should be able to look it up on a Mopar parts website.
Can’t be wearing a straight 6 empire hoodie while working on that jeep 😂
Yet I did 😂
@@OutJeeping all jokes man. Thanks for all you do for the in-line 6 community though! Helped me tremendously on my XJ repairs
Glad I could help!
Can you do a video on a jeep gc throwing the code P 0456
What is the part that’s right in front of the right coil on the valve cover ???
💯💯
What a pain in the ass. Thanks Jeep lol
How often do I need to change the spark plugs for my gc v6 18
Manufacturer recommendeds maximum of 100k mile intervals.
Should the ignition coils be replaced as well?
I would if the vehicle had higher miles maybe upward of 150k miles. But with only having 70k these coils should be good for at least another spark plug cycle.
@@OutJeeping Agreed. If they do fail prematurely, change all 6 with only OEM Mopar coils if you are keeping the car.
I got a 75th Anniversary Edition 1941. Newest car that ever had. Didn't need the Sparkles would be such a pain. Not to mention everything is plastic brittle and breaks. First time I ever seen a plastic manifold. Not only that. The bolts to the manifold look like they're threaded like wood screws. The heck with all this proprietary stuff. I bet if you took it to the dealership they would charge you $500 just to replace a spark plugs. I really like this Jeep it drives good best car ever had but man. I'm in the middle of it right now, and I'm putting the manifold back on, and I'm just worried about cross threading the wood screws. Any advice on that?
I wouldn't be too worried about those screws just tighten till it snugs, they don't need a lot of torque.
Thanks man. I'd rather be replacing an engine on a 67 Mustang then replacing the spark plugs on this Jeep. Lol.
Did you replace the intake manifold gaskets?
I did not, but not a bad idea to replace them while it's all apart.
Did you have to gap the spark plugs
What’s a good website to buy fuel injectors?
Any dealer Mopar store. Or rockauto.
My jeep sputters only when I turn it on. And then it smoothes out. This was before and after I changed both spark plugs and ignition coils
@swimers100 Is it sputtering, or is it clanking for the first second or 2? It's common for all 3.6L to clank for the first 2 seconds on start up where it sounds like it has no oil.
@@OutJeeping dang I need to check the oil but yeah the steering wheel shakes( not too rough ) and the engine too for a good 2-5 seconds after turning on. Then smoothes out. Might go to AutoZone to check the engine light. But just wanted to hear your thoughts first.
@swimers100 Well it's a common issue that they all do. Even with the oil at normal level. The engine design allows oil passages to drain back into the pan. So the first couple of seconds is the delay in the oil getting pumped back to the top end of the engine.
Hahahaha my neighbor hired a mechanic to work on her 2017 plugs I just happened to go over there and I couldn't believe the mess this guy got himself into . He is outside, ready to cry 😢 😭 🤧
What are the tools needed for this entire thing??
Socket set, wrenches, screwdrivers and a spark plug socket.
I did everything you said to do and my 2018 GC isn't running right.
Need more details
con cuanto kilometraje o millas cambiaste las bujias ?
Its recommend every 100k miles. I changed mine at 73k miles.
Thank God my 2018 High attitude only has 36k on it so far.
I have a question can you please contact I have a question I need questions on my wk2 I am replacing drivers side valve cover and wanted to ask you questions about it
Fire away
How long is this job take to do ?
About 3 hrs with filming.
What specific tools are needed??
Basics hand tools. A wrench, ratchet, and screwdriver set will get you going. And a spark plug socket.
I was hoping that our 2018 with only 40k on it, would have the coils last longer than that. Shitty design that all that stuff has to come off for coils and plugs.
Where would cylinder 4 be located
Middle cylinder on the drivers side.
who in the hell designed that shit? i mean damn disassemble the whole engine damn near, thats nuts. i mean i am used to regualr v8 chevy motors takes all of 20 minutes to change plugs
I agree 100%
My 2016 limited has the same engine set up how is that possible
...because they been putting 3.6 engines in jeeps for over 15 years
Some are turned to the side that’s what I meant
I had a 2010 lexus rx450h before my 18 jeep high altitude and you had to disassemble half the firewall components to replace the passenger 3...did noone during engineering and designing these engines especially the pentastar realize how incredibly difficult replacing what should be the simplicity of engine maintenance they created? A 30 min job now is 4 hours? CONSPIRACY! BS!
New cars are becoming more difficult to service because they don't want them to last long after the warranty expires. Therefore selling people more vehicles.
its a total mindblower how much engineering has lost touch with simple engine maintenance such as plugs and coil pack replacements are concerned. WHY on earth does a throttle body need to come off along with the intake? MORONS. They should by law leave space to access plugs...good luck getting all the plastic clips and bs back in place😢 Your video is my reference 👌 to replace...but i feel id rather trade it jn than deal w the trauma 😂
Uranium plugs? Sounds dangerous! ☢️
Iridium*
Dealership said 600$ on this and coming from the dealership that seems cheap
Uff
That's cheap 🤣 I got offered $1,300 including the plugs & new gasket set. $930 for the labor work
Need the firing order….cylinder 6 is misfiring
6 is closest to the fire wall on the drivers side.
why jeep why? it should be so quick always to replace plugs. such bs these new engines..should've got a hemi...think its easier
I did plugs on my hemi last year. It didn't take as long but still has its own challenges.
Pentaster = Quality NOT !!!!!!
