"The Airhead" Part One. Building a garage door on the cheap using Timber decking
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 8 сен 2024
- In this video I attend to a long overdue repair.
My old garage needed new doors. So I made them from
timber decking. Cost less than £100. A new bought door would have cost far more.
i never thought i would ever watch someone build a garage door on you tube, but hey , Doors look good
Lovely pair of hangar doors. Would make a nice home for a MiniMax!
Nice job, Sandy, looking good.
Good job ! always be proud of your work
Looks good once you put the varnish/oil on it. Also... a big *Congratulations* on being mortgage free.
good job..im about to build a gate out of decking boards and that helped a lot..thanks
you know what it is Sandy, you could sit talking small talk and others just like me will be happy , more than happy to watch you
Enjoyed that Sandy...I am imagining some wonderous flying machine is going in...will have to wait and see...looking forward to seeing you again this coming weekend...been a long winter..not over yet but the trip to the moor signals this year's adventures are afoot.
Yes Sam, The finer weather is not far away now:) The Moor beckons:)
Yeah.....I like that!......Im in a similar position,......My house is now paid for in full and im now out of work due to illness and my garage doors need replacing........I actually like what you have done there but I dont think my neighbors would like it if i didnt replace nine with a like for like type of doors.......I think I will do the same but use the normal type of wood if i can find it cheap enough,Theres a imber yar around the corner from me so I'll have a look tomorrow,Ive watched a few videos on this now and im an electrical engineer by trade and never made anything with wood and been apprehensive about it but after watching this I think I'll have a go,thankyou for you video its much appreciated.
Nice job, good to see you.
Thanks Patrick
Thanks for sharing your success Sandy! Carry on old chap!
Looks the business mate. My garage is the back of a lorry, older than me. The roller shutter has just gone on it. So I’m going to be doing the same as yourself, except it will have to open outwards.
I can see the smile on your face wanting to say what's going in. Look forward to seeing it arrive. Cheers Tim.
It’s always good to see you on RUclips Sandy. I think you are a fascinating man with many skills and a wonderful example as an superior human being.
Nice job mate, looks good to me.
Nice job Sandy. Looking forward to seeing what you put in your garage!
Congrats on paying off your mortgage!! My folks will be making their final payment next month. It is quite a milestone!
Congratulations on paying off the homestead! Me and my Misses paid ours off a few years ago also. It really feels good to know that no matter what happens, you've still got a place to call your own. I think the garage door turned out great! Been doing home improvements to our place also over the years. Can't wait for the conclusion of this project. Keep the faith and once again, congratulations.
congratulations on your paying off your house...may you both enjoy the fruits of the labour...cheers
Nice job. I've got the exact same problem, a dilapidated garage with rotten doors that were second hand when the garage was built 45 years ago. You've inspired me to try the DIY approach and I may even try and build in a wicket door too. Wish me luck.
congratulations on being mortgage free. I know how it feels. Good job on the doors they will last for years and probably better quality than anything you could buy Sandy, Thanks for sharing,
73 Kev
looking forward to part 2 atb scott
Thanks for taking the time to bring us into your life Sandy, and great news about your mortgage. Always a good video mate, ATB Peter
Thanks for watching Peter.
Nice project, my fencing is timer decking beats throwing it away or burning. Just keep putting on the wood preserver lasts ages. thanks for sharing.
Looking forward to the Airhead :-) cannot wait to see it.
Nice job Sandy, good to see you back, can't wait for part 2. That pressure treated decking will last a lifetime, I built a deck on the rear of my previous property back in 2000 and it is still standing and looks good after 17 + years and that's with being walked on and all manner of inclement weather lying on it during the winters, no such problems for your vertical surfaces.
Yes it's good stuff and quite heavy duty too.
Nice job Sandy, Looks solid and secure, well done on paying off your mortgage, its a hard slog to finally get there but to know you now fully own your property is a good feeling, and now you start putting the money back in to the house to do all the improvements you have wanted to do for many years, being working class isnt easy and you should have had all those jobs done years ago But it all takes money, I wish you well mate just dont over do it, waiting to see part two, Take Care, Les.
Great video and good to see you again bro. We had lightning a couple of weekends ago that put the internet out and the weekend just gone, been on and off a few times but seams ok now so catching up on Utoob where I can. All the best
Great space for ‘the project’ Sandy.
Thanks Bill. Shushhhh! I am still looking at Watches. I bought a new Vostok last week. Reckon I may get a Seagull or Seiko soon.
Not a bad job the doors look good looking forward to part 2, atb John.
Not bad for a cheap job:)
Congratulations and nice job on the doors
Congratulations Sandy, on paying your mortgage off, life is full of new beginnings, make the most of this one 😉
Doors are looking well posh Sandy and that decking will last for yonks mate.
You've made a really good job of that, should be good for years. 😊
Great job! Looking foeward to seeing the bike :)
Fantastic job sandy and well done on paying your mortgage off
Pleased for you Sandy.
Now I'm busting to know what's going in there! :)
I may have a video up of the thing that goes in the garage before the weekend, if not I will let you have some hints at Stapletons cottage.
Perfectly good doors there, especially with the wood treatment on , and for £100 , can't fault it it . My neighbour used decking for two sets of lorry sized gates on his vehicle yard. They're strong as hell, and been going twenty years or more. A coat of wood oil and they'll look brand new. Congratulations on the mortgage free status. Nice one . That's my target for this year , to hit totally debt free and clear of anything. Just the mortgage left, and not a lot. Only delay will depend on the penalties they might try to slap on for early settlement. Will have to see. Mind you , I am trying to persuade the wife that having a smaller mortgage for a little patch of woodland wouldn't be totally daft :) we'll see . BUT , enjoy the freedom that monthly burden being gone brings Sandy. Mind you , should have sold the kids years ago . That would have sorted me out . Enjoy yourself Sandy . Curious about your new 'toy' . What's next ? a damned autogyro , swamp airboat, hovercraft , microlight ? Who knows with you . :)
LOL wait and see:) Yes a small mortgage for a small woodland would be worth it I feel:)
It's coming together awsomly mate. Lots of change since I seen it last. :) nice idea forbthe garage doors
Well Done Sandy! Great job :-)
Thanks Andy. Weather looking good for Tuesday. I am hoping to go flying at Challow.
Hey you got the garage door fixed. That's fabulous Sandy. More space - more potential! Congratulations on paying the mortgage. Truly a ground breaking moment for you all. Does this mean i'll be able to camp in your garden now? Ha ha! Have a great week bro. Mark
The house is different to when you were here last Mark. I vowed I would not spend money on renovations until the property was bought and paid for. I know a chap who spent a fortune on new windows carpets etc only to have the lot repossessed when they could no longer meet the monthly mortgage payment.
It's not been easy for us either. But we (The wife and I) kept on working through thick and thin and got it done:)Now mortgage free.
I know the long road Sandy - You have to trust me that I have been to the bottom and back again and at the end of it I lost again. I have been struggling to and my struggle is not to different to your own. I'm with you mate - I get the hurt, the hope and the dream. You got there eventually. You can relax a bit! Love to you all
Don't look great mate can't wait to see what you keep at it mate good onya take care
That’s true sandy so guess that would need to be addressed if you did alter them.well done sandy.tim
I think it’s some sort of airplane, helicopter or that propeller device!
Hi SandyI see you have my saw bench. Very versatile take it anywhere.
Thanks, that's given me an idea for my rotting garage side door
A side door should cost less than £50 to replace including hardware
practical and does the job nice!
Congrats on the final mortgage payment sandy 👍zepplin storage on the cards 🤔🤔 👌
We appreciate you!
Nice to meet you Laird Colin
Hi Sandy - I think they're called shoot bolts. Am glad you've got good hasps and padlocks on. I had my garage broken into and they stole both my bikes - luckily I got the 531ST back but missing some of the 20 year old group set. They look like they'll last much more than 7 years.
Sorry to hear you had a breakin. If thieves want something it's hard to stop them but all we can do is make it difficult for them in the first place.
Great looking doors and congratulations, a great moment to actually own it all lock, stock and barrel. But, I'm dying to know what is going in the garage. Atb, rich.
Nice job Sandy and I reckon you have quite a few intrigued viewers now 🤔atb mate 👍🏻🇬🇧
MOOSEDOWNUNDER haha he's gone an got himself a quad I reckon lol, atb to you and the wife Moose ol boy 👍🏻🇬🇧
Cheers mate and you and yours. Let's see what he has up his rather long sleeves lol.
Looking good. Congratulations for paying off the mortgage. We have about 6 more years. Have to reset the door hinges on our shed. The wind blew the door several years ago and bent the hinge. We picked up the pine barn doors at a reuse center for very little. What's the surprise that goes into the shed? A Land Rover or a green woodworking wood shop?
I think the garage is for your Paramotor ! Sandy xx
Hi Sandy, good to see you, always a pleasure to watch your videos. Congratulations on becoming mortgage free. I'm guessing you're hinting at a classic beamer motorcycle :-). Wishing you health, happiness , peace and lots of tinkering.
Well done Sandy on the doors and the house. Happy for you
I reckon "Little Nellie" would fit in there
I might be mortgage free but I still can't afford a Little Nellie:)
Well done on your mortgage. I've still many years left on mine.
Nice job Sandy :) Next job will be a moat & a duck house :) Good feeling now the mortgage is paid eh! Good wishes. Les
It is a great feeling when you get the letter to say you're all paid up on the house, congratulations, Sandy. Is it a plane???
Congratulations on the mortgage Sandy. Atb
Teaser, can't wait.
Nice to see you again but this is a bit of a tease. Nice job so far.
A tidy job there Sandy, great to be Mortgage free, it's all yours ... have you a website for you knives ??? Cheers Glenn...
I just bought a Ruger AR 556 but I am yet to fire it . I have a colt 1911 45 caliber semi automatic . I can hit pretty good with it.
Train Hard, Fight Easy William. Good solid words to live by mate. Good luck with the AR. Cheers Moose.
Thank you sir....good advice
CONGRATULATIONS!!! on paying off your mortgage sandy! :):)
the word mort = means death in french hence the word mortgage!!! whilst over many years fully
engaged in a slow death!! :(
from now on let there be life!!!!!
:):)
Congragulations on the Morgage! You should have a morgage burning Ceremony!
It is comforting when I see you post a recent video Sandy...it re assures me that my ex wife has not sent you a large sum of money and that you are not in my neighbors hedge row looking at me through a rifle scope. I hope you are laughing....I remember seeing you shoot and you are very skilled.
Thanks William,
Yes it is a sign of a misspent youth. I learned marksmanship as a young person with an airgun. Ammo was cheap and it was quite normal for me to get through a tin of pellets (500) every week. I did that for a long time.
Those same skills are transferable to larger rifles. Sadly though the cost of 1 round of .243 is over £1 so I can't fire many off willy nilly. I have to make each one count:)
Congratulations on paying the mortgage off Sandy. A real achievement :)
ive yet to buy a house so i have it all to look forwards too?!!
Congratulations from being de-slaved that little bit more, good to see your well, the garage door looks sound but I don't understand how your going to get a BBQ and chairs on the decking :)
I hope it's a microlight
Congratulations on the mortgage mate. What an achievement.
My wife and I paid most of it Tom but also a legacy from Mum helped too. It is wise to make regular overpayments if you can.
Looking good! What kind of oil is on there or is it stain? Looks beautiful! Hope you show off your new kitchen and stuff.
That was Creosote
Cliffhanger ending!
Doors look good and should out live the Garage LOL
Haa:)
Nice sturdy doors Sandy ..Do you win a prize if you guess whats going in your refurbished garage? Lol xxxsha :- )
Actually it seems quite attractive. You better be careful or HGTV will be stealing your ideas. Good to see you again I've been missing your content.
Thanks Gary.
Looks like a hefty door Sandy....Knotty pine..?
Congratulations on beating the scourge of humanity, the mortgage. The deck boards last many years horizontally, they should last forever vertically.
"Scourge of Humanity" lol, classic, ill pinch that phrase if i may Shannon. ATB Moose.
Well done on the mortgage Sandy, it is a weight off of the mind. The garage doors are to hide that big hair dryer thingy that you fly?
Building a mini Jet or a simulator to hone your flying skills I recon ..
atb t ..
G'day Sandy, you tease mate, lol. I think the doors look bloody cracking, like the Wild West style of times long since passed. Mazel Tov on paying off the mortgage bro, It's all yours now, so enjoy the extra monthly income mate. Now..... bring on Part 2 so we can be jelous of your new toys, whatever they may be!. Cheers Moose.
The new toy is a boxer in the middle weight class
lol, well i would pay to see that in your shed mate. :-) cheers you lunatic. ATB Moose.
Ah so this is what you’ve been up too Sandy. Hope that your keeping well? Some sort of hanger for a flying machine I think.
Yes, A flying machine.. Keep guessing. Bill knows what it is:)
nice job .mrk i escort or old capri .
very nice job , Sandy . . how is lil Elsa doing ?
Elsa is doing OK thanks Jubel
Do you have any update on this door. Im thinking of doing this myself using a kreg pocket hole jig to secure the board to eachother and let them somewhat float in an angle iron frame.
Door is still going strong
Good job! I'm suspicious, this Airhead, was it made in Germany?
yes in 1980
Yeah! Looking good Sandy. Did you put a piece behind one door to bridge the gap between the doors? Makes it harder to get a crowbar in there to force them open.
Looking forward to seeing the Airhead!
Noel
Good point Noel. I will address that tomorrow! We are starting to get the place "Shipshape and Swindon fashion" now that we have a little spare cash each month:)
Hmmmm..... I'm hoping your Airhead is what I'm thinking...... :)
Hi sandy nice job.are you ok with them opening inwards.do you find them in the way at all.tim
They are fine Tim as nothing is going to be parked close to them but I guess it makes sense if you want more space to have them opening outwards. The trouble then is the wind will catch them.
An airhead is a term used for aircooled BMW motorcycles. You getting a bike Sandy?
Wait and see:)
I'd be happy to have a garage like that. I noticed the back portion is made of what we call cinder blocks in the US while the front portion is brick. Is there a reason for that style?
I think it was just built that way for speed. The blocks are concrete. Cinder blocks are lighter in weight. The garage is around 55 years old so it should still last a while longer.
Fairplay on paying the mortgage off, now sell me a jacklore classic lol, only joking mate.
ATB, James.
I wish I could build them quicker James. Currently I build around 2 knives per week. They are a lot of work.
I know mate I was only pulling your leg.
You little "Tease" Ha Ha
Good job, how long do we have to wait for part 2?
Not too long. I may have a followup video out later in the week.
Hehehehe you crafty devil Sandy (see what I did there?)...Please tell me that you aren't going to set up your lavvu in there and make bushcrafting vids from the garage? LOL
nice practical solution to an item often overpriced and tacky cheap anyways timber decking is quite robust and easy methods! to do this with
weatherproof too
for about 15yrs
nice for wilts thats a prupper jub!!
Thanks David. I know Garage doors can run into a thousand pounds or more sometime, so I am happy with this cheap alternative.
Wiltshire Man all over proced everything is now but garage doors especially!! often for a load of old tat from the factory stamped out or molded their profit margins must be phenomenal the inclusion of a bar top n bottom is a good idea!! most garage thefts they simply pierce then cut through the thin garage door material be it fibreglass or alu and go in then help themselves!!
come back out through the large hole theyve created if its fibreglass they often use a chainsaw or alu nibblers or more often than not force the mechanism up n over mechanics by forcing the bottom upwards intil mechanics break buckle etc they overide they then simply overcome the locking mechanism!! by jolting it
on the rollers etc
they are swines ive got to upgrade the security on my workshop door im going to bolt a metal bar through 2 brackets that spans entire outwards opening door!! we dont get any crime here where we are at dead queit very rurally remote most peoples here dead honest which is a treat
compared to life anywhere in uk
but we still hear stories around abouts of others being raided often when theyve gone away or on holiday with cooincidental timing often times the people who have gone away have only told so called other english friends when they are going and for how long etc
and that is often precisely when the theft break in robbery event occurs!!! :(
so in other words its got to be other english!!! living abroad who are doing it?
or the copious levels of rural gypsies whose youth not older members tends to get bored go on a scrounge or a prowl for anything!!
that they can use or resell again! from other peoples properties be they resident in or out!!
so once youve got it sorted ensure that your ins premiums and locks security is all beefed out as these outhouses are always diff to protect or lockdown fully
yer little dogs ears will be the very best deterrent!!
let them meet the double barreled scatter gun youve arranged in the loft of the garage pointing downwards or the electrocuted door handle and razor blades set in resin just behind the door!!
so as you got dna evidence in the form of theives fingertips to hand over to police when they try to force the door!!
:):)
yer probably ok where you are but swindon in gen can have the odd idiots about!!
outskirts of swine don are pretty ok usually
not that bad
but you just never know
so protect it all once done
:)
watchtowers barbed wire searchlights packs of dobermans
minefields but i reckon some of these swines would still persist & get through it!! so camera cctv it yer backyard up
once finished
that way you can rewatch all of your valuable items being taken away on the thefts anniversary
after the police do nothing except issue you with a crime ref no!!!
:)
and expect you to not bother them anymore and simply go away!!
arrange a javelin on a catapult for the next herbert curious enough to poke his nose in through yer doors!!
he shall be pinned by shoulder blades unable to move to the decking then as real evidence!! to take along to the police his ankles ravaged by yer guard dog!! & copious amounts of
hot tea poured down his pants!!
:) before he ever reaches the police stn! :)

Wiltshire Man that was a dead jammy bit of luck that last bit actually fitting without needing to be cut lengthways at the end!! yer a bit of a jammy dodger you are!! :) sprinkle some of that luck onto me!! :)
you wiltshire wizard!!
Guessing you have bought a motorbike
:) Not a bad guess that!!
Ultralight/trike.....
Yes she is but no it's not an ultralight
because its decking wouldnt it be now a good idea to bolt or fix some garden furniture and chairs tables parasol to the both doors?
for a bit of authenticity?
:)
i didnt know that wiltshire folks had same amount of fingers as uz dun yer in debn nor that they could use power tools with their club fists!!? :)
very remarkable results
a nice coat of weather resistant paint would finish it off in orders to keep up with the jones!! tannilised look doesnt suit red brick go white nice and clean or practical color light grey green or something
i shall be up.to visually inspect it straight after give it closer scrutiny!!
:)
divulge my highly valued opinion later!! over it ok?
:)
im surprised that you did all that in inclement weather
with no hat on!!
i was half expecting to see you slumped up against half finished door suffering from hypothermia
wife oblivious as always to your predicament!!
after locking you outdoors in the cold!!
