Can't wait to see the swap. I've had my eye on these older Leaf cars with the worn out packs. They are very inexpensive and yet are seemingly very reliable cars.
Did know you are car fan as well.

Some insight from a Leaf nerd: Make sure to enable 80% max charge, long life mode. To enable that, click the lower right button, click settings, then 80% charge. ALSO, your model does not have the upgraded battery chemistry that Nissan started to use in late 2013. We have a late 2013 Leaf and it has only lost 2 bars over the 10 years we’ve had it. There are places in Europe that replace or upgrade the battery, but in the US it hasn’t been easy to get that done. There’s a video by Fully Charged channel where he gets the battery replaced in the Netherlands. The only 2 issues our car had was a faulty driver side window (stopped rolling up), and clicking from the right front axle. I heard the AC is expensive to replace when it eventually dies, so look out for that too! We LOVE our 2013 LEAF and have a newer, 2019 Leaf Plus. We pay 0.03 cents for KW, so fuel cost is close to nothing.
That’s great! You have simplified your life drastically. I recently bought a Model 3 and I can’t image going back to a conventional engine for daily driving. I have parked my Forester XT in the garage and have not used since I got the 3. Diversify your garage to fix EVs and you’ll be set financially as well.
When Eddie Van Halen died, there was a lot of discussion over the fact that he never listened to music, and he was quoted as having said that he preferred listening to the engine when he was driving. Maybe he had the reverse of wizard and was tired of hearing music all day at work and needed a break from it after hours.
9:00 we get to see a Wizard work his magic and cast a smell
Took a fair amount of effort looking at the lean into it 😜😆🤣🤣🤣
You can even fit a 62kWh battery, although it will extend about an inch lower underneath. The 30kWh and 40kWh packs are the exact same size as the 24kWh. There are also extender packs to add in the trunk.
You'll have a lot of issues more likely
@@terrybrown6057 No real issues upgrading to 40kWh pack, and extender packs for trunk are basically plug and play.

Well there's one thing both the Hummer and Leaf have in common: One gallon of gas won't get either of them a mile.
😂😂😂😂😂😂
Maybe if you put the gas in a generator it might charge a mile of range.
We have the winning comment, folks!
The leaf may be electric but now we know the wizard is gas powered! Congrats on the new car and thanks for being human (and funny)
Wizard!!! I have a 2015 leaf and love it. With the exception of the battery range it's amazing. Surprisingly roomy for the size, no engine noise, and the trunk is huge. The cost of charging is minimal compared to gas too. Although with the amount of torque it does burn through tires quicker than other cars. This isn't a performance vehicle by any means but it has some pep. They start with 12 bars I'm at 11 with about 55,000 miles. Looking forward to the EV content.
Really cool to see inside and underneath an EV. Can't wait to watch videos on the battery swap! Also, would be very interested in checking out the precautions the Wizard takes when working with high voltage!
Part if the issue with the Leafs battery life is the inadequate cooling of the batteries. You’d be well served to consider improving the cooling, especially if you are going to replace or up rate them
except that they have no cooling.
So, what kind of noises does this car NOT make? Wizard: “listen closely.”
The Wizard has more gas emissions than his new car.
The exhaust has a burble tune!!🤣🤣🤣
@@billcooper2584 Just another word I wish I didn't know.
Hi Wizard, here in Europe (more specifically France & UK) they've found a way to fit after market 60KW batteries in Gen 1 Leaf's and have the new batteries communicate with the old car. They have massively improved range and are benefiting from the advancement of newer battery technology and battery management solutions at a fraction of the cost of buying a new BEV with the same range; a modern day "LS swap" it seems!....
I have a feeling Wizard bought this car for the sole purpose of getting some hands on experience with these types of jobs. Smart man getting ahead of the curve.
Wizards face was so red! So funny.
You missed that the right rear wheel is bent. (You can see it at 13:28 in the video.)
I noticed that too. Guess he’s not too worried and will probably replace it when he swaps the tires.
Also noticed the right front brake line is running on the cv shaft?
I also noticed that the tierod had been probably bent back and the sway bar link boot was opened up.
I also noticed that wizard shit his pants
Well spotted
The Nissan leaf is beyond reliable! I’ve had mine for almost 5 years with absolutely zero issues! I’m still driving it even though I just purchased a 2021 M3LR. :)
Two things: 1) That coolant isn’t for the motor; it’s for the inverter, which switches between alternating current (AC) and direct current (DC). Even hybrids such as the Toyota Prius have an inverter cooling system. 2) The car still has hydraulic brakes, but those sensors near the master cylinder are to help balance between regenerative braking and hydraulic braking. A hybrid would have similar equipment.
Leaf: zero emissions
Wizard: not really

I made exactly the same evaluation last year when I bought my leaf. The running costs are a joke, it's a nippy handy car.
When you swap the battery, let's also put the old unit to good use by storing solar power with it. Great kits available to repurpose the old batteries...
I wish I had time and money to do all of this.. but I'll follow with interest!
I would love gas prices of $5,50 for a gallon! Here in Finland we pay over 1,60€ for a liter. That’s about 7 dollars for a gallon of regular unleaded.

You can swap in a 40kw pack from a 2018+ leaf but it will be in limp mode until the new battery's BMS is flashed to the cars ecu. Ev's enhanced sells a pairing tool that plugs into the obd port and you press one button and it's done.
Im thinking the same
The wizard definitely won't be left behind with newer EVs! He's going to school with his own car and continually upgrading his skills!
Just found your channel! Love the Leaf purchase. I bought my 2015 SV in March of this year. Just installed an L2 charger a couple weeks ago. Mine only had 13,500 miles on it and still has 12 bars of battery health. Can't wait to see where you go with it! I'm in Kansas as well, so we both know what the weather is like here. I'd STRONGLY recommend window tint. Nothing crazy, just the legal limit, but it makes a HUGE difference in how hard the HVAC system has to work.
Yesterday I bought my first EV and it became an Leaf 2014! It's an amazing efficient Car 👍
I'm excited about your comming vids and your experiences!
8:50 That was beefy and girthy! Poor Mustard got the brunt of it.
I can't believe the Wizard missed the dented rim on the rear passenger wheel. Great content. I'm curious to learn more about the EV.
Yep, very clear at 13:28. Think that'll need a new wheel.
And the front right brake hose rubbing on the drive shaft/Axel. But I'm pretty sure he's aware of them!
He will definitely find out when he tries to get new tires in the fall
I've dealt with more bent rims over the years than I care to think about, both on aluminum and steel rims. A dent that small won't make any difference. If it was going to leak it already would have. If he is concerned about it, next time he gets tires he can either buy a used one, or he can have the it repaired if there's a wheel shop in his area.
He was still dizzy from the fumes he created prior. Flat floor, dangerous gas trap 😅
I hope I have enough time left at nearly 70 years old to try an EV Wizard!!! Loved the car lift music 😉👍😎
This is gona be a great series to watch as you progress with this upgrade.
When wizard makes more noise than the car…..
Noise and emissions
Since it isn't a Tesla, you gotta make the farts yourself
I don’t believe the leaf keeps it’s battery environmentally controlled - that would be a part of the issue.
AC charging (right port) is maximum 6.5kW (maybe, some models have 3.5 or something). DC is max 50kW (a bit less tbh). While not needed for daily use, it can be very useful on occasion. If it’s possible to retrofit I’m sure a small(?) crowd would find it interesting.
kW = power, kWh = Energy (power over time).
For the existing batteries, I'm sure the AC port is adequate. But yeah, he'll really want DC charging if he expands the capacity.
@@TimHoppen still takes two and a half hours - at best (assuming 60% residual capacity and that you can charge at full speed until full, which you probably can’t). DC would at least give you a significant amount in ten minutes, topping up will be tough though - probably won’t stay at peak speed for too long.
At any point, I don’t think anyone would invest in DC charging on such a worn out battery without planning to swap the battery (or swapping the battery first).
While I think swapping batteries is a great idea for keeping old EV’s going, the flip-side is that if you’re in an accident the insurance company is unlikely to make you whole again. A 2013 Leaf is worth $4-5000? That’s what they’ll want to pay out. So, if you spend $3-5000 on a swap, you’ll be likely to lose that money unless you have a good insurance.
@@magnusbae yeah, there is that insurance risk. I suspect some company somewhere can account for that in a policy, but he (or other EV owners doing the same) would have to specifically look for a policy that accounts for that.
I guess my "it's adequate" point was also assuming his description of his normal use, driving to work and back home. He doesn't have range to go anywhere else. At either location, he's got hours of time to charge on chargers that he owns. In his typical use, it's not a *huge* deal.
Once he swaps batteries, he'll go more places and could actually take advantage of faster charging.
... I just thought of this, forgetting something at home would be a pain. You can't just turn around and go back to grab your phone or whatever because you only have so much range and it takes forever to charge back up. Still probably not worth upgrading to DC charging just for that (maybe? I don't know)
Cool to see something so different! Can’t wait to see you find a battery and swap it out! 👍🇨🇦

Now if only we had the electricity generating infrastructure to power tens of millions of these cars. We don't and we likely never will if the green nutjobs have anything to say about it.
@@saltyapostle44 Knowledge is king, stupidity gets boring. And you might have lost the evolution of decentralised power generation using windmills on and offshore and solar power.
You will pay the bills, which we do no longer have to pay cause we invested once for 25 years
We produce power from bio mass plants, hydro power from dams, wind turbines and a lot more - and as inventors we sell the green tech across the globe cause smart people buy that stuff and not fossils from the arab states to burn in cars.
There is enough power and no issue to charge these cars cause what are you doing at home ?
Turning on a sauna which will usually take 6 to 10 kW or a shower water heater running at 22 kW.
So why shouldn't everyone charge his EV over night with 6 kW each hour, so 72 kWh over a night ?
That will be enough for 300 km and who rides every day 300 km ? just a few, while the average guy in europe is riding less than 40 km by average, so even with a small european 230V socket running 10A or 2,3 kW you can charge over night in 12 hours 24 kWh or 150 km of range without any issues for the grid. The grid had been developed from the 50th during eras of full uneffcient production and high power demand which had been replaced by high efficient production lines and therefore these old lines have a lot of reserves from that era. Check your old OSRAM bulb that was a heat generator delivering 80W but only 10W of light where you nowadays use what ? 10W or just 1/8 of the power needed before.
40 km of range charged of night will be achieved in 4 hours with slowest charging speed of 2,3 kW which also lets the battery benefit.
We have both kinds of cars, fast EV and very fast and long distance Mercedes Diesel .
Charged from the roof the cost per km are low cause 4 cent per kWh means 1€ per 100 km cause we do not charge outside, only from the solar roof. And beyond battery range we use Diesel to avoid time loss or missing convenience.
But you can dream on about infrastructure - like deep water horizon and the damages that were caused by that single incident, the cross american oil pipelines and their leaks and accidents.
Nice to watch the US struggling to get the right things done first and relying on outdated tech as in the past even incapable to develope a vaccine.

Never thought I'd be watching a Nissan Leaf video on your channel! Wizard bring it all to life!
Most newer EVs don’t have battery issues like that. The Leafs have absolutely terrible battery management. They rely on passive air cooling. All newer EVs use active thermal management using liquid cooling. Their batteries don’t deteriorate. The Leaf was a great EV for its time.
"All newer EVs" except the new LEAF, but I assume you meant that. I really like my '13 LEAF and thought the LEAF plus would be something that I would look to buy in the future, but I will not even consider one because of the air cooled battery and the limitations it causes.
Congrats on your new car. According to a friend of mine who owns one of these, it is possible to install a higher capacity battery pack in it. It just might give you a rather faulty number for how much range you've got left. Obviously, just make sure to use the proper, insulated tools and gloves while doing the work. We don't want a singed Wizard :)
Oh, and careful with those old tyres in the wet, though you probably know that. The torque of that thing is, as you say, instant.

UK seem to consider a 45 minute drive a long commute and generally drive smaller cars. Not saying it changes the price just that even if your gas costs double ours, you still probably spend significantly less. My gas truck costs $170 to fill up at $3.50/gal, usually once a week. Just because driving 100-200 miles a day hauling material is normal. From what I hear about Europe that is not the case.
Hopefully you keep that battery for your shop battery back up. With an inverter and a solar panel it would save a ton of money for you

A true dad, relaxing driving home from work. I wonder how long he sits in the car in the driveway. I do that often, and enjoy it very much, just my own little world.
The Wizard has articulated the reasons I bought an EV back in January: reliability, quietness, the future cost of gasoline, the simplicity of ownership. The car I bought doesn't have much of a service schedule (7500 miles, rotate tires....15,000 change cabin filter). The particular car I bought was being sold at *very* low prices even with the highest trim levels. I also believe the EVs will be in huge demand by the end of this year. Politics will dictate that through *very high* gas prices.
Nah. Even if gas goes to $10 it will still be the smallest part of my ownership cost.
The missing chademo DC fast change option allows charging at circa 50kW, the plug on yours will do 3.6kW on AC with the right charge station [later leafs had the option of a 6.6kW]
As I said in the first video leafspy pro is very useful tool. Clean and lube the brakes particularly the rear drums. Check the front strut tops as they are prone to water ingress (covers are available)
Agreed, Leaf Spy is absolutely essential for monitoring by our battery SOH.

I love this channel. Always delivers my car geek fix. God bless you Mr & Mrs Wizard!
Kudos to Mrs Wizards commentary on the interior! Well done.
I've had a '13 Leaf for years. Use it like an overgrown golf cart for short commutes up to around 20 miles getting around/between towns. It has been the most reliable thing I've ever driven within the range limitations. Only real maintenance was to change a 12v battery necessary to power the electronics.
This is old and probably useless information now, but if you can find a Leaf built after March 2013 it will have newer battery chemistry. Because of this and living in a moderate midwest climate, my battery still retains about 85% of it's original capacity at 62k miles. In Leaf terms this is 11 or 12 capacity bars - shown to the right of the charge bars.
I'm interested to hear what you do for a battery upgrade. Crazy to talk about the economics this way, but the car has been SO CHEAP and RELIABLE to operate over the years, it would probably be well worth dumping a 6-8 thousand dollar traction battery into it when the range is no longer adequate for our needs. But you really have to be able to get past the UGLY shape of the car!
Wizard contact Bendpak and they should supply to you the special lifting lug to replace your current lugs on your lift so you can lift BEV and be able to remove the battery etc
How many leafs can a bendpak lift lift if a bendpak could lift leafs
One thing about EVs is that the range goes down in the cold - maybe by as much as 1/4.
depending on area, temps, and battery generation/type, that can be as much as 1/2.
1/4 would be fine, but in very cold climates it is often much higher than that.
Some is because of battery heating etc .. the newer heat pumps in m3 and mY and vw id4 solve that a lot
We own a 2016 Kia Soul EV. I live in Southern Ontario (Canada). It actually loses about 1/3 of its range in the winter in extreme cold ie
@@joelmarold Tesla's battery management system is industry leading, I just wish they sold that and their powertrains to other manufacturers. Great project car for the price you paid.
The coolant on the motor is split into 3 parts all linked with hoses, so you've got the Power Delivery Module on the top (Panasonic), then the AC/DC inverter, then the motor on the bottom. All are cooled same as a regular engine but separate parts. The PDM is the most delicate... Be sure it's kept water tight. Nissan goes to extreme lengths to seal it. There is a gearbox on the motor output shaft. This is called a reducer. It has oil in it. Drives front drive shafts.

It is so fitting that you have your new EV next to Hoovie’s H1 diesel guzzler.
I'm really excited for this series. I've been looking for a cheap Leaf as a 2nd car, but I've always been turned off by the battery issues.

Highway driving obviously was less efficient, but I was impressed how well Nissan did with this little car (which is bigger than people realize). I could drive for about 8 hours on a charge, and use the super charger and be back to 98% in a matter of 25 minutes. I always figured the battery was going to be the weak link. I'm very interested because if the work isn't that bad, I might be in the market for a pair of them.
Leafs are as heavy as a Maxima. Low center of gravity, which I like.
Haha! That was a good one! Nearly blew Tyler's Hummer over. Love your videos....
On my second Leaf. What I like is the Leaf's simplicity vs Tesla's potpourri of "stuff." Suggest buyers purchase used as they greatly depreciate. I bought mine about $20,000 less then new; 18 months old with 12 bars.

I'd love to find something like that to drive to work through the week. I love my 96 Buick Roadmaster sedan, but I don't like the $50 a week for gas at about 12-15 MPG
The nice thing about the roadmaster as it’s paid for though right?
Excellent video! By the way, here in the UK I'm paying $8.44 per gallon for gas (petrol) and that's due to go up to around $10 a gallon by November. Gas/petrol is at its highest value for 7 years in the UK.
It's more like $7.00 per US gallon in the UK for normal unleaded assuming you're paying the current average of about £1.35 a litre.
In Italy it's currently 1.7€/liter which at the current €/$ change it's about 7.54$/gal. And I HOPE it will go back to last year 1.35€/l ...
@@AlessandroGenTLe in the Netherlands it's 1,97 euros per liter at a highway station. Glad I drive an EV 😀.
Also it has regenerative braking, which adds miles. I rented one from Enterprise once when they did that. It was cool to see the regen i n action on one of the displays on the instrument cluster.
I'm happy you bought it Wizard.
Lot of mostly thanks !!!
Your kindly simple clearly explain discussion
Those little cars are fun. I had the opportunity to drive one and was pretty impressed.
