Well like Byleth, Dante has more than just a sword, he has nunchucks, a motorcycle, and some knuckle and boot weapons. He also has an Arsenal of guns.

Every FE character in smash has a sword. The franchise is called "Sword Character" for everyone who doesn't care for fire emblem. As child I had no idea who marth and roy came from when playing meele. They felt so out of place and boring for me compared to the other ones, but thats personal opinion. I like to play most of the FE characters from ultimate once in a while.
But it's not about the sword, it's not about the character, it's about the franchise and the timing of the release. And people just get more aggressive, if all that comes is "hoes mad" like the little kid that ran out of arguments.

A little context on Max's reaction. He was playing Dirge of Cerberus all night waiting for the presentation so by the point it happened he was physically, emotionally, and spiritually drained from LUCRETIA!! He also seemed to take it being another Fire Emblem character pretty well considering he thought it was Dante.

Even more funny, since his gimmick is to switch weapons he would have a playstyle similar to Bylet for his normals. I guess Dante fans are not ready to realise there's litterally a DmC anime too, he's like THE definition of over-the-top anime swordman. xD
More seriously, Sakurai said at one point that alot of things done in character pass 1 are new mechanics that may help for character pass 2, so it's probably thanks to Joker and Bylet that one day Dante may join Smash.

Man, Reggie never actually said they’d be third party all he said was that the characters in Fighters Pass 1 would be new to Smash Bros, which of course they had to be because compared to Smash 4 DLC like Mewtwo and Roy, no characters needed to be brought back since Everyone is Here and all...
Also Joker was never a 3rd party character, Atlus have always released some of their games on Nintendo devices. They even made a Fire Emblem SMT crossover.

Nobody thought it would be 3rd party because Reggie said anything, they thought it would be 3rd party because every previous character in the fighters pass was. They were building up to what should have been the finale to the fighters pass, but it was a massive let down. They just completely dropped the ball for the most anticipated slot in the pass. If they had have put Byleth earlier, or as a fighter in the next pass, nobody would be as mad as they are now. Choosing Byleth to “top off” the fighters pass that was otherwise 3rd party was a terrible decision, and it shows by its like:dislike ratio

I love Sakurai's cheeky smile after Byleth was revealed, that is the greatest troll face to anyone that was upset that Byleth was the fifth dlc character, for me I'm fine with it I mean I'm not hyped for Byleth but I don't hate their inclusion. I would be ever so slightly more upset if there wasn't another fighter pass that's was announced with 6 new character which I'm buying day one just like the previous fighter pass. Now all I want is for the Knight from Hollow Knight to get some sort of representation.

@@Nat_the_Chicken I would honestly like a Mii sword fighter costume for the knight since both Sans and Cuphead are exclusive costumes to the Mii gunner I would be cool for the other Miis to get exclusive costumes of that caliber. I do think Knight has a a wide enough move set to make a fighter compared to Cuphead and Sans but I also don't think Hollow Knight and it's devs are as close to Nintendo as Toby Fox who is damn near a Nintendo employee at this point and with Cuphead which Sakurai himself in all his greatness likes the game. I just feel like those 2 had a better shot at being actual fighters but they are just costumes, but hey a costume would be amazing.
@@richardmorgan3665 It's fairly reasonable to expect, since that's how he seems to be including indie titles. I'd say it would be hard to do an accurate-looking Mii costume of him, but they did fine with Sans and Cuphead, both of those were in 2D art styles.
@@Nat_the_Chicken Well you never know Nintendo are the Kings of left field they might just make the Knight a spirit like Shantae, a Mii costume is be the perfect middle ground from an unlikely fighter and an upsetting spirit inclusion.

I mean, people were less upset for Chrom because people already expected him instead of Lucina in Smash 4. So it seemed quite logical. The least deserving FE character is Corrin when you think about it. Many people find Corrin boring even in his/her game and this FE game came out after his reveal (except for Japan).

@@kyurei4478 Neither Chrom or Lucina deserve a slot over Corrin. It should be one lord or Avatar per game. Corrin shouldn't be in for a ton of reasons like Fates being a bad game, but Chrom or Robin should have been the awakening rep. Lucina is a side character.

TheKenyonSquad so true. To be honest I don’t think Dante or sora will ever be in smash. Same goes for master chief/Doomguy. All of the characters currently in smash excluding a few such as banjo, are all somewhat relevant in Asian countries, specifically japan. Kingdom hearts and devil may cry isn’t as popular there (I am not saying they aren’t but jrpgs are more popular). Plus most of the dlc characters that makes it in are from games that sakurai likes (I’m aware that he has no say to who will be include but that is usually the case).

These reactions to Byleth in smash is hilarious, knowing that half of the Smash community being salty about it probably never played a fire emblem game and don't know how it works.
Yeah most ignore the fact the Fire Emblem games do not have the same core characters in each game unlike most other Nintendo series (Metroid, Mario, Zelda, Kirby, Donkey Kong)
ReiKusanagi for me at least that’s not the problem. When she first came out I hated her before I saw her moves because the majority of the characters are blended echo fighters for the most part.
The main thing that annoys me is that I wanted more differences between the characters besides varied moves and stats if you’re going to have THAT many blended fighters.
Or, don't care about the source material. No one likes a smartass. You think you're better just because you played a basic strategy game with a soulless main character? Get over yourself.

I think they should have instead included one of the lords from Three Houses or the three of them eventually (without neglecting the other series) because they have so much potential for great variety of moves. And since the Arms characters has been announced, I think Byleth's extended sword attack may become unrevelant.

Hot take: Byleth Deserves a spot. It's some of the other Fire Emblem Characters that don't.

Roy our boi is only off of Melee legacy. He wouldn't have made it today.
Robin, Lucina, and Chrom representing Awakening is a lot much too. Robin alone is fine.
Byleth fulfills the same waifu ability as Lucina and in some areas surpasses her.
@@runningoncylinders3829 But if you keep Marth it takes literally zero effort to keep Lucina since she's an echo. Axing Roy and Chrom is definitely fine, as well as Corrin (despite him having a pretty unique moveset, he just doesn't hold as much weight in the community anymore).
Ideally, Marth (Lucina), Ike, Robin and Byleth are the FE reps going into next gen. Great diversity in moveset, play-style and silhouette.

I'll always remember that day. I was with a friend and we were chilling and walking through the small town where we live. We love Fire Emblem and I was sure that the character was going to be Dante. But then I just heard like the first two notes from the Those Who Slither in the Dark Theme and went like "YO IT'S FUCKING BYLETH I KNEW HE WAS GOING TO JOIN SMASH EVENTUALLY LET'S FUCKING GOOOOOOO"
My reaction to this character is similar to most japanese fans.

Another pet peeve of mine: If you're buying the fighter pass and you accept not knowing what characters you're buying then you're not being a smart consumer. Don't do that next time. You're allowed to be upset about characters you don't like but have responsibility for your spending habits. Don't act like Sakurai forced you to buy a bad character because that is astoundingly dishonest.
It’s a slight discount vs. getting individually, but I expect there are people who just got Joker/Banjo instead of the full pass.
You would still only save 1 dollar by electing not to pick up one Character/Stage/Music so the pass is essentially buy 4 get 1 free.
i decided to buy each fighter individually as they came out for that reason. i was disappointed by what the FE warriors season pass had to offer, so i practiced more caution once i saw the smash bros fighter pass. if you gamble, do not blame others if you dislike the results
Plus Sakurai said in the november direct to "NOT BUY THE PASS IF YOU AREN'T CONFIDENT OF IT" people just bought the pass anyway thinking they would get what they wanted and now they complain. They could just buy any character separately and just leave byleth out of their games.
I didn't get any of the characters I personally wanted, but I have ton of fun playing them. Especially banjo (didnt know his existence before smash and I'm sorry for that I never had a N64 LMAO)
and yet, I"m still gonna buy the next FP blindly , because I want my roster complete no matter who enter, as long as they are fun to play
I honestly expressed more confusion than anything. I frankly didn't care at all that the last fighter was from Fire Emblem: Three Houses, but was questioning why it was Byleth instead of any of the House leaders.

Talcor ™ the thing with Dante is that he only has one weapon that acts like a sword. He also has nunchucks, gauntlets, guns and other weapons, while with byleth, most actions COULD be executed with a sword already. For example the forward smash could have been a sword move, and down B as well, but it’s just a bit different since the weapons are different

Well actually one of the DMCV people (either the director, or the official DMC account on Twitter) told everyone to be excited for something special the same day as the direct, and said the thing to look out for was specifically for the Switch. I believe this Tweet was written before the direct was confirmed. Also I might be wrong and it wasn't a tweet but a video, but it was something to that effect. So there was strong precedent that it could be Dante or Byleth and most people just took it as only Dante or Sora. So it was likely, but more likely to be Byleth honestly. But that is why Dante was brought up so often with these reactions. (especially noticable is that they all mentioned Dante, even though it could just as well have been Nero, which makes me think most of them weren't actually fans or cared about the series and were just buying into the hype not knowing anything else about the characters)

No official indication from Nintendo I think is the key thing. It could have been something else that the DMC developers were telling people to look out for. Maybe a port of DMC5?
@@matthewheinlen9164 As far as I'm aware they didn't reveal anything themselves. It's likely that anytime a developer reveals a direct (or implies something similar) of time its because they found out about it in some way, but not because they are part of it. So I think someone at Capcom heard of it through their connections and then excitedly mentioned it, despite the fact that they had nothing to do with it. But this leads people into thinking there is a connection. I think this happened before and it was likely coincidence.

As far as Star Force goes I think a remix of the Sky High Coliseum theme from Star Force 2 would make a good battle song.
