THE BIG ATTRACTION, of course is the menu price list. Most expensive item is frankfurters and beans 30 cents. Beef stew is 15 cents, beef hash 15 and 25, soup is 10, spaghetti red 14, macaroni and cheese 14, chili beans 25, rice chili 25, rice with brown gravy 15, bread pudding 12, hot rice 12, extra sugar 1 cent.
A faded sign announced proudly that the Pioneer has done its own baking for the last 30 years. I had apple pie and coffee, 16 cents. I've had better and I've had worse but not for that price, at least for a long time.
I asked Mike Sentipol how he did it. He said it was a struggle, all right, to serve satisfying food at those prices but it could be done by keeping the margin of profit down.
What's going to happen when the Pioneer and the adjoining shops and stores are torn down? He didn't know but he'd heard it was going to be a parking lot.
What about the hungry men who can afford no more than his 30-cent meals? Where will they go? He didn't know. Best guess is that they will move off spring street. and take their trade to E. 5th St., where there a number - a dwindling number - of similar low-priced restaurants.
But not with the sitting and staring priviliges they enjoy at the Pioneer."

I loved Pioneer Chicken, I especially liked it with Pizza Man Pizza _(also, sadly, defunct),_ which shared a parking lot with them at the corner of Compton Blvd & Acacia Ave. 😊

Thanks man! I always wondered what happened to all the Pioneer Chicken spots. I grew up near one in Highland Park in Northeast LA.

Best damn fried chicken ever. I go to their Bell Gardens location several times a year. I sit down for a meal, then I get a large order of chicken for the family. If I win the lottery I vow to work with the owners to make em grow again. It's that good.

Lincoln Blvd in Santa Monica was my go to in the early/mid 80s. I remember the commercial poking fun at Kentucky Fried Chicken's 3 breasts. "Three breasts? , chickens don't have three breasts!" 😅

The echo park location is now a little caesars and the pioneer market next to it is now a walgreens and lassens market. I saw both the restaurant and market of its same name close at the same time sadly

There was one on Rossmore and Melrose in Hollywood. Man, that chicken was greasy as hell, with more skin than meat. Btw, there's news of a couple wanting to bring back the franchise in San Francisco.

CFC never tasted as good as the other chicken chains in Indonesia. As far as I can remember, their chicken were breaded instead of battered. I also remembered how they don't have as much locations around the 2010s

Interesting, didn't know fried chicken was a thing in Indonesia. It is a thing in Hawaii, they do a good job w/chicken mac sal and the teriyaki plates....
