- Just a few meters below the waves, marine biologist and explorer-photographer David Gruber discovered something amazing - a surprising new range of sea creatures that glow in many colors in the ocean's dim blue light. Join his journey in search of biofluorescent sharks, seahorses, sea turtles and more, and learn how these light-up creatures could illuminate a new understanding of our own brains.

There's something about listening to someone who is genuinely passionate about they do that has an added draw to pull your attention toward them. We all should be so lucky to experience this passion if only once, in our lifetime. Its not like the subject of this video needed any extra attraction, as its amazing just as a topic but you can tell the person that's narrating it sincerely loves what he does. ❤❤
M. DAVID GRUBER is pretty good at stealing other scientists' works published in other countries. Talk about passion & *_sincerity._* As a marine biochemist I am digging. Then I will call my lawyer.
@@laratatouille6364 how so?
Hey! Please watch: Peniel ngonde,

Absolutely love this guy. You can tell he’s a real person. He’s excited. He’s perplexed. He’s adorable.
The ocean is both terrifying and beautiful
don't be scared, here hold my boob
So is the land.
I think they were so impressed by it that they forgot.
Its was not affected by the days of Noahs flood al lis the same

To bring that discovery into neurosciences is absolutely amazing. That picture of the brain with illuminated synapses and cells made my jaw drop.
yeah cause putting glow in the dark fish DNA in the human brain will have no side affects what so sver,,,,HA
@@shadowcasterstudios4042 Pretty Sure they didn't do that with humans, but with animals.
Yes Exactly I also loved that
That's the stuff Bill Gates wants to put In you called Luciferase/Luciferin aka the mark of the beast
I'm humbled.
But, I'm also inspired.
I grew up with coral reefs at the bottom of my garden. I relive every moment of my life during which I swam and walked on the beautiful reef. Sixty years ago I was often alone on miles of silver sand, and turquoise sea.
Even at that time a Japanese 'research vessel' would occasionally chug along the near shore until my father and others became suspicious. Covert observation by scuba divers revealed the vessel sucking up swathes of reef floor to harvest sea slugs specifically for gastronomic inspection.
Even then, men were beginning the destruction of marine eco-systems. This video was both fascinating yet sad at the same time, because the speaker constantly referred to the possible extinction of species and habitats.
Stop now. Fight now. Educate now.
This was an amazing presentation. He completely brought it back around to the human experience and made it so clear. The ocean is like a giant brain. There are organisms flashing lights, making connections, keeping the world going as much as it can. The fact that these creatures use light to seemingly show themselves and possibly communicate through light is amazing.
Glow in the shark
Johannes Lück sounds like a sharknado spin-off
Rollin in da deep lol
I can see that on T-shirts
Great bright shark 🦈
More of this. THIS is the kind of Ted talks I want to see more of. =)
I love the feeling of exploration and learning new things.
Me too!
Except that this guy wasnt even close to the first person to discover or record fluorescence in vertebrates, or bioluminescent fish. I have no idea why he's acting like and talking like he is.
A very cute, passionate, nerd. I love him.
I've been told that I'm intelligent and passionate about what I know but I don't really get girls commenting on me as being a cute guy like the way you did with this guy, wish I knew for sure that there were girls who thought that about me
There needs to be evidence of girls finding me attractive in that way too as that's very important and will make me feel better
@@joshuadaltilia8480 you're too scientific and needy to have that verification/info. Once you let go, it will co.e.
@@youmakemehappy7 I kinda already have had girls who have said I'm cute so I've improved thank you
@@youmakemehappy7 plus it's not very fair to say that to me cos I'm human and so want the same things as everyone else

what a wonderful world that we haven't fully discovered yet!
So true
This man has so much passion for this subject and im so glad hes on top of this interesting subject.
Finding the interconnectedness is awe-inspiring.
Wow. I can't say I expected this to be as interesting as it was!
That was amazing! Very well done and so informative. Now we need to re-research everything we thought we knew about aquatic life because this is hugh. This can even help (perhaps) with limiting shark attacks if they see certain colors and avoid those and we use that as our swimsuits. Who knows. Marine biology is such a fun and fascinating thing. I love it.
Many scientists have studied and recorded fluorescence in marine animals prior to him. Bioluminescence and fluorescence have been extensively studied. More recently, fluorescence has been described by others, and using fluorescent proteins as biomarkers has been the standard for awhile now.
Wow, some people found it too difficult to applaud his wonderful presentation. Maybe they just don't get it.
@@eugeneedwards6020 Probably very little enthusiasm, either. They are allotted their time by the TED organizers and must fill it. I appreciate his time and knowledge and obvious love for his work
@@eugeneedwards6020 Also, the fact that you just stated that you could do it better, is nothing but ego.
@@eugeneedwards6020 Carefull with that ego, you used it so much it got dangerously dull.
@@sirzebra im so glad my dull ego inspired you to write me a lovely letter. imagine what i could do to you if i was exciting. you may go........ and dont come back.... sir zebra...... is that a bondage name.....
@@eugeneedwards6020 You seem full of yourself and how is he annoying? he is fascinated with his work and expressing his enjoyment on much experience he explored his discovery is a good sign to say that he is willing to do something that not many People are willing or courageous to seek and know. Over all, do not use sarcasm or be pitiful about your statement if you can not back up yourself with no contradiction.
This dude came to my school like 20 mins ago
I'm so jealous! He looks like such a sweetheart, even in the National Geographic movie they made on this topic... :3

one helluva TED talk
Amazing !!! what a wonderful talk,i am so amazied
Really awesome video, best of luck in your research!!!!
Whoa! This is one of the best TED talks I've ever seen. Not many people can see the similarity between our brain and the Universe, although Buddhists have known this for millenia. They say that the Universe is a gigantic brain and we are figments of its imagination.
Splendid! Thank you!
Yes we need to protect the environment in both sea and land on our planet, and everyone should do their part in this. The nature sure is amazing and we have so much to learn from it.
This video with David Gruber speech on his discovery and studies are impressive. Also, I wish many hopes to be safe and humane as he strives further.
This is all truly, extremely interesting, but with his enthusiasm and intonation I couldn't help but be reminded of the honey badger video and I really, really want a spoof video of this now.
this was a great video
It's encouraging to listen to a lecture from someone who is totally in love with a fascinating, highly unusual career ! 💙
Amazing! Never heard of this ...
Bravo, Bravo, and again I say Bravo! This was a powerhouse presentation, Exemplary in all parts, points, and plot. It was so Informative, Engaging, Thought Provoking, and Dare I say Moving. I must confess, I can't recall a TED Speaker so Clearly Present and Totally Impassioned by the topic that they're truly unaware of the amount of Joy they're Manifesting/Exuding. Thank you David, Indeed I Thank you!

Awesome talk!
Thank you. Wonderful.
That turtle shell is dope.
armchair hypothesis: the turtle's biofluorescence is algae growing on the carapace.
kwyjibo lol yes, very much a possibility. otherwise we would be looking at boney biofluorescence which isn't a thing yet discovered afaik
@@Li-yt7zh that's exactly what he's saying. We should be looking at these creatures.
His head was glowing too tho and parts of the fins.
@@mereduthgrubb3648 why wouldn't algae grow there as well? it might not, I'm really asking. =)

There are many places on the coast of British Columbia when everything that's needed is there to make things like this happen. You can dive into the ocean and from the surface the diver looks like Tinker Belle with a trail of glowing particles behind you.
It's especially fun to watch the look on the faces of those who are experiencing it for the first time.
I still after seeing it many times have the same look as those who are seeing for the first time.
Love this
Just awesome!!
I am regularly surprised by how many obviously educated people don't know the difference between phenomenon (singular) and phenomena (plural) and use the plural form as if it were the singular form.
+Vierotchka For many people like myself, English isn't our main language.
Thanks for clarifying that distinction, I will remember :-)

@e causey So nature is a Democratic plot? Ok, that's a first. Don't think Mr Yaweh is going to like your comment.
I saw people like this at the blueman group!
I've been interested in animals my whole life when I found out about this it blew my mind. There is so much we don't understand because we study things in relation to humans (i.e. how humans see) not how the thing we're studying relates to its world.
Wonderful
So cool!
Interesting~
murmaids r REAL
Why cant we plz focus our time and energy on exploring our planet ...instead of blowing up hospitals and schools.
Because some people behave like rats. They only think about making as much offspring as possible and are not caring for their surroundings.
its important to blow up those hospitals and schools of those stupid people in those fugged up countries!
@@akaDimi-vj6mj Are you even aware of who is doing the fucking and who is getting fucked? You can't just call entire populations unworthy of life. that would be shallow, unjust and cruel. Grow enough conscience to know that other people that you may not know about and have definitely not met, have a life. Perhaps there are too many humans on Earth today, but that does not mean we would kill the "extras".
Vugen18 While I wholeheartedly agree, the people blowing up hospitals and schools are not watching wonderful videos such as these and reading nice comments… They are in a cave planning their next execution of evil… Sadly...

We are slowly getting out of our senses limitations. What we learn can produce new ways of thinking and conclusions. Seeing the brain at work and have a fast computer look at it could be revealing on how we work and how to enhance us to become super.
so much to discover so much to learn yet we are destroying it all for our Petty greed
