In this column, I want to introduce a versatile hi-hat variation that adds thirty-second-notes within the sixteenth-note pattern to create some extra motion without breaking up the flow of a reggae groove. This variation works within a one drop, steppers, or rockers pattern at any tempo.
For this example, I placed the added thirty-second-notes on the hi-hat on beat 3, but you can place the thirty-second-notes throughout the bar as you feel them. You can hear recordings of Carlton Barrett using this variation in a slow one drop, as well as Bud Gaugh from Sublime using it in an up-tempo rockers pattern.
Remember to keep the groove strong!

Although he currently plays with Marilyn Manson and Stolen Babies, and has performed with Dillinger Escape Plan and Puscifer, Gil Sharone has had a lifelong love of Jamaican styles, reflected in his past work with Fishbone and Dave Wakeling, as well as on his DVD, Wicked Beats, which covers Jamaican ska, rocksteady, and reggae drumming.

the accompanying chords, or the skank is on 2 and 4 while the one drop beat is on 3... so it's 1, skank(2), drop(3), skank(4), repeat pattern. you counted the measures too long at the end fyi which would give you a completely different feel for the reggae beat than what it should feel like, but for the most part the rockers beat was on point bless drummie
